Pattern Sport Flyer 1.38m EPO Kit only
Pattern Sport Flyer 1.38m EPO Kit only

This large size pattern plane is made from EPO foam and has a winspan of 1.38m!
The Rainbow takes around 2hrs to complete and is easy to assemble and repair thanks to it's simple design and strong EPO construction.
A very nicely scaled and finished R/C model; main wings are reinforced with alloy tube during mould injection for a strong slop-free fit, the landing gear is strong yet light, also servo operated retractable landing gear can be installed, battery access is very easy, tail section is light and provides plenty of control as do the full size ailerons.
This is a true pattern style sport EPO foamie with a solid design that can still handle small crashes without breaking.
All hardware required is included.

wat is the spinner size for this plane.

What the different between and Firenza. The Firenza cheaper. Why this more expensive?
 saltyisildur 13 points
Good question, I am wondering the same thing
 KaosKane 1442 points
Firstly this plane is more built than firenza eg this has 4 magnets to hold the nose cover on also it has magnets for canopy. Secondly this plane has the carbon spars in the tail embedded in the foam at manu not stuck on the surface afterwards and finally this plane has metal horns not plastic ones HTH

got a spare canopy for this badd boy, sat on mine when drunk haha
AnandP  6 points - 2/7/2013

I want to fly it with 3S battery, can i use D3542/4 1450kv motor with it (have spare)? if yes, then what shall be the prop size and esc required.
 Tuomas 96 points
I suggest 6s setup as mine had. But recommend to train more that 6 months with F3A planes.
unleaded  165 points - 1/24/2013

I have a SK3 3542 800 kv motor that is spare will this motor be powerfull enough on 4s for this plane
 NewToHobbyKing 7079 points
Well Unleaded I find it hard to believe this is a FOAMY. The listing says Motor: 42-XX Brushless out runner 650~1000kv, so your 800Kv motor on 4s should be plenty. In fact even on 3s it would fly but not as nicely, as on 4s. Tare!

Hi, Anyone fitted air retracts, it looks as if, with a little carbon strengthening in the wing, could be done, I have two or three sets, not a fan of electric retracts, plus, I expect the fixed U/C mounting would need "work" Thanks
electrorocketeer  30 points - 5/26/2012

will NTM 42/48 650Kv work for this? I have that motor and 85A ESC. Planning on using 6s 5000mAh. Is this combo going to work?
 PierHenri62 87 points
Guess it's a good setup, but pay attention to the CG!

Which glue I have to use with this Epo foam? The glue for Elapor is ok?
 delsol7 19 points
Glue stick is good enough.
 Kellyann 16240 points
klisura Hobby King recommend Foam CA glue. I find hot (not too hot) glue works. PVA is a bit heavy but if you have time works well for little bits. I hope this helps
 ____AK 91 points
Glue stick is not good. You have to CA for EPO, since it gives the best results. Also you have to pay attentiot *not* to use epoxy because it gives good fake bonding. Elapor is kind of EPO and Multiplex recommends zacky glue which is actually CA. If you find this helpful, thumbs up.
 Sloperdude 1317 points
The model comes with a tube of very effective foam glue. I used that.
 saltyisildur 13 points
glue stick is perfect i use glue stick on all my planes!
 Francisco 2 points
Use the glue provided by HK. It is perfect for this EPO

What motor (expect TGY AerodriveXp 42 SK Series 42-50 650Kv / 1150w) should I use? I want to use 4S
 Azmus 5 points
You cen set in this plane:
TURNIGY SK 35-48 900Kv.
Turnigy Brushless ESC 85A w/ 5A SBEC.
GWS Park HPX Servo 19g/.05sec/3.6kg (JR Plug).
Turnigy nano-tech 4000mah 4S 25~50C Lipo Pack.

This motoset good for 10 minutes fly, if you change all steel tube to a carbon for a this kit.

For F-11 (Full F3A) recommend 4260 with 5Sp1 5000mah.
 Jürgen 9 points
So ... this motors can't be backorderd :(
 Sloperdude 1317 points
Jorgen, try instead the NTM 40-48 650Kv. It's a much better motor than the Turnigy SK. More powerful magnets, better bearings, better quality control, higher power. A better motor overall. 14x7 on 4 cells, 13x8 on 5 cells.
 Sloperdude 1317 points
Oh yes, and if you order the NTM motor, order the proper NTM accessory pack for it too, because with the Rainbow, the motor mounts with the shaft pointing backwards.
jetdave  7 points - 4/1/2011

does anyone know the CG position, and are the wings removable as i have no instructions with my kit. Dave.
 H-KING_SCOTT 5238 points
Go with the (main) spar to start, it flies well on that, and adjust to suit.
 ____AK 91 points
CG position is 20mm from the trailing edge (unusual). You can find the manual in electronic form somewhere on the internet. Wings are removable and there are two slots to lock the wings in position but without supplied pieces. You can use icecream sticks for it *)
 BrianB192 1298 points
Yeah G spot ,,i found Mine yes ,lol as for the paddle pop sticks ,,i just used the plate that came for the steel landing gear ,its not used if you use The retracts ,, but freeze the cheap retract gear ,and fix with Carbon rod bits ,, use plenty of heat glue while doing that. Looks alot nicer with Landing gear ,,,, retracts ,,frozen ,, and its realy neet ,, im thinking of cutting a few inches of the whole length .and Making a Shorter cockpit area , removing a few inches from behind the cab cut in half ,than rejoin and fiber tape the whole body ,as i would do any way.,but to reduce its length would Make for a nice stunt Plane shape easy enough ,,as i did snap 1 MX accidentally and You not see the difference now rejoined , but hit a tree somehow hit ,breaking in 2 bits clean .. but easy to join with Heat Glue ..and Fiber Tape..
 Kellyann 16240 points
Jetdave lots of great advice above very cool. Have a look at the FILES tab. There is """HK manual Rainbow A-388 pg1 HK manual Rainbow_B pg2 HK manual Rainbow_B pg3 HK manual Rainbow_B pg4""""" in the tab for download. I hope this helps.
 Sloperdude 1317 points
BrianB192, a lot of us slope flyers are using 5mm clear laminating film to strengthen our foamies. Fiber tape is no longer needed, and you can apply it over the graphics. Use a covering iron at Ultracote/Oracover temps. You know when it's adhered when the laminating film goes from frosted to clear. Note that the only way to get laminating film to stretch over a compound curve is to heat that portion of the film with a heat gun and THEN apply it to the foam.

Has anybody estimated the wing area for this plane? I want to make some calculations in MotoCalc but I can't find any reference in Internet.

Baz AUS Like this? i got this plane and bought a 100 amp hk speed controler and plan on using 2 2200mah batts and TGY AerodriveXp 42 SK Series 42-50 650Kv motor. my question is my S/C has no UBEC so when i order a UBEC what Size BATTERY will i need to run the UBEC.I have never bought a S/C without a UBec B4.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Baz
 H-KING_SCOTT 5238 points
It depends on how you want to do it, look at the max voltage of the UBEC's, for this model, I would go with one that will take power from your flight battery rather than the type designed to run off seperate 2s Lipo, as this will add more weight for little benefit as the model is only 4 servo.

Anyone have a clue about retracts?
 BrianB192 1298 points
I FROZE THE RETRACTS ,As i got the cheap set , Now frozen ,Its Great strong landing gear ,as the fiber rods i placed around the landing gear add to its side way strength .and no flex just good strong fixing ,is all we want ,, so yes i use Mine daily with a 100 amp behind a 800watt turnigy motor .Very good but cheap setup easy to make stronger ,...

I am planning to power this airplane with a saito 56 or 62 size 4 storke engine. Are they very big choices? Would I have any weight issues?
 Sloperdude 1317 points
I haven't heard of anyone flying a foam plane like this on a glow engine. Besides, electric is the way to go, and I've flown my fair share of glow planes.

gee whats with the funky lookin fin at the top??
 Robachan 1099 points
Wouldn't that be an ideal spot for a flight stabilization system, like the FMA Co-Pilot 2, available here.
 ALCARAFA 305 points
look for the OXALYS of phaysant christope leroux on internet, you'll find out the pourpose of it.
Its mainly aerodinamic flow trough stab.
 vladfr 11 points
*ALCARAFA, it's a T canalizer and created by Christophe Paysant-Le Roux, the F3A world champion.
 maukabud 408 points
as (kind of) stated, the fin on top generates better airflow across the elevator and vertical stab. It's a pattern ship thing. :D

AN excellent plane that can easily handle 6s. However, be very careful with the magnets that hold the canopy in place, although they look strong, you will lose them in flight.... guess how I know! I am ordering this second plane just because of this. For this one will install a latch plus additional magnets in the middle of the canopy. Hopefully this will work without having to resort to tape each time.
