Hobbyking Pitts Special EPO Plug-n-Fly BL
Hobbyking Pitts Special EPO Plug-n-Fly BL

Our new HobbyKing Pitts Special is the hottest new EPO creation designed and built just for HobbyKing.com customers!

The Pitts Specials quality design and excellent flight characteristics are the result of 6 months of design and testing. A lightened tail, carefully chosen power train combination and battery location as well as the use of 4 ailerons and strong EPO construction make for an excellent flying and long lasting plane.
You wont find any plastic ice-cream-container cowling here. The entire fuselage is moulded from crash resistant EPO as well as the wheel pants and tail pieces.
As you would imagine, the Pitts with its 4 ailerons has an incredible roll rate and with its brushless outrunner motor can perform almost any aerobatic maneuver. Alot of attention was given to ensuring the tail of the pitts was light so a smaller and lighter power system could be used, giving the Pitts Special that trademark slow flyby ability!
You will need around 30 minutes to assemble the Pitts Special. No special tools or glue are required.

bobfish (100%)
I have just ordered a Mini Pitts Am having trouble finding an appropriate TURNIGY battery. Is the Turnigy 1000 mah 3S 20C a suitable battery?
7/25/2010
Goncalo (100%)
Please HK can you sell the plastic struts that fit between the fuse and the top wing? Could be nice... me and others customers need it because they are fragile. By the way, the plane is really nice for aerobatics.
   pinguin6218 (50%)
Yes, we want parts

Will 800mAh 2 Cells Work?
   E.M.P RC (100%)
Also is this good for a newer pilot with some experience under the belt?
   pinguin6218 (50%)
the spec says 3S

I have a question

should the tail wheel connects with something?
   pinguin6218 (50%)
You put between the foam and pushrod link, so it will move together with the rudder
7/11/2010
pinguin6218 (50%)
I have several questions:
1. I bend the motor shaft, is there any replacement for the shaft?
2. If I want to replace the motor without changing the ESC, which one can I use, AX-2306N-1300 or AX-2308N-1800?
   KrzyInuYasha (50%)
If your going to replace the motor but keep the stick ESC then you can't go more then a 9 amp draw with the motor. I was curious as to what the current rating was on a the ECS was and best I could find from searching the chip part numbers on the ESC is it has a max of 9 amps with probably a burst of 11. When I bought a charger I bought the parts listed below to replace the stock and put a GSW 7x3.5 prop on. TR_P12A-E TURNIGY Plush 12amp BESC T2730-1500 Turnigy 2730 Brushless Motor 1500kv There is a definite difference in the amount of pull just from holding the plane when I tested both the stock and new setup around 2x the amount over the stock. Haven't gotten to flying it yet at all since I got it due to weather and time constraints so take the upgrade as you will.

pinguin6218 (50%)
If I want to change the motor, how do I do it? Do I have to cut the nose or is there any other way to do it?
   wjbuys (67%)
The nose is stuck on with double sided tape, and is quite easy to just pull off (at least on the Pitts that I got). The motor mount is a stick-type, and I was able to fit an HXT 2730 with no modifications.
   pinguin6218 (50%)
I can't find HXT 2730. What do you use for the propeller shaft, with adapter? Is this motor the same as Turnigy 2730 1300kv? What about AX 2306N 1300kv? It has the shaft for prop and stick mount.

I have got the reply from HK Customer Service, " sorry, we do not sell spare parts for the item"...sigh, not even fly this plane yet and damaged....

Try to give a review, maybe my comment sound negative, cant posted there....where to get the struts between both wings...help please...tq
7/2/2010
tommykkgw (0%)
I totally broked the plastic support between both wing after repair, and prop gone too, not even enjoy the fly, tested with land hand launch, failed..where to get sparepart?
6/26/2010
jets462 (48%)
Can it fly only with the lower wing???
   Jan (34%)
It should be able to "fly", but I wouldn't count on good flight characteristics.
6/23/2010
wjbuys (67%)
I've completely destroyed the plastic struts that fit between the fuse and the top wing. Any chance of getting those as spare parts? They are about the only piece of the plane that breaks...
   daboiz (34%)
Couldn't agree more. I've glued mine up several times, would love to replace them.
   tommykkgw (0%)
Yes, tK from Malaysia, mine totally broke too after few repaired, prop too....please help....
   mattavoboo (25%)
i also need parts. WHERE ARE THE PARTS?
i am using 8x4 prop of h,king :)
   pinguin6218 (50%)
Is it a GWS prop? mattavoboo, how do you fix the prop? cause the nut hole on the prop is much to large with the stock nut.
   baggss (100%)
You can fab up the struts using plastistrut, typically used in the model train hobby, this stuff comes in different sizes

What is the best set up to super charge this little lady?
   downloader (75%)
Just be careful with the weight! :)
6/14/2010
daboiz (34%)
Can a replacement top wing mount be ordered?
Great plane, plenty of power with stock setup and aileron roll rate was good. I broke the wing mount when I launched it with a reversed elevator, can blame that on the model design.
3/25/2010
flashflash46 (-7%)
I want to order the Pitt, but all of the 3s batteries are on backorder.
   FusionTiger (75%)
Just put them on backorder and give yourself about a month of waiting period.

Please be sure to do your research carefully before commiting to this place, that are multiple issues about its design and included electronics.

Some simple modifications are required for acceptable flight characteristics.
   FusionTiger (75%)
Sorry for the typo on 'Place'. I should be 'Plane'.

I now use a 2100Kv 3S Outrunner (from a AXN floater)with a 25 amp speedcontoller and a 30C 1000 MAH 3s lipo! Now it has power to spare and flies great!goes strait up in the air!
   Maurie (-15%)
Could you please tell me if this is the motor you are using for this plane,2210N 1000Kv Brushless motor for AXN Floater-Jet, if not could you tell me the model number for it then

-Fish- (13%)
Hi, spare parts are they always planned ? (prop, wing mount...)

PS : my ESC does not work with 2S 1050mah 20C Rhino, purchased, specifically for the pitts...it's a little annoying and apparently, many of us. However, this is a very nice kit.
   Hermansjoerd (31%)
It needs 3S to arm the equipped esc! And no it does not fly with 2s and no modifications! So buy 3s 1000 mah or replace engine and prop!
   Nobby (-44%)
Is it not possible to change esc battery need by settings in esc and TX? like most esc's do?. Try google changing xxx esc to 3S and see wat comes up

Mike (40%)
Hi, Although I preordered, mine only arrived today so must be in a second batch. I have problems with the screws not fitting. They go okay on the struts but wont mate up with plate in the wings as the plate hole looks too big and possibly the screws too short. Anyone else having issue with this?
   Adam (35%)
put the screws in from the other side of the wing. there are some recessed holes. I spent an hour on this before figuring that out!
   tommykkgw (0%)
Most of my screw cannot fit in to, ended with longer screw..

Hello everyone.
The Pitts' new configuration works much better on 3S 800-1000mAh.
2S Will not have enough power and will not arm the ESC.
   Herkalees (81%)
Good to see you went to see for yourself. Thats the right way to run a business. Glad to see the specs are also updated. I flew mine today and love the little squirt.
This customer was awarded a credit for their answer.
   Bluefisherking (88%)
Hey that's all very well updating the spec, but what about us ***r customers who (pre-)ordered the plane and two of the the *2S* lipos that were suggested on underneath it!?!? Mine still says processing, will it be stopped so I can change to the right lipos?
   Robachan (83%)
I agree with Bluefisherking, and add that HobbyKing should include a 3S 1000 lipo to all those who preordered with the old specs, thinking that 2S was what they needed, so at least they can start flying it when they receive it. I have a bunch of 2S 800s and 1000s that I was thinking I could use. ***mer!
   Robachan (83%)
Is b-u-m (bee yu em) blocked because of what it means in British English? Is it even that bad of a word, needing blocking? Any Brits care to comment? I am American, btw.

Oh, and I think you are right, Robachan! I just hope I can get my order changed before it ships...
   Jason5001 (-7%)
Steve (Robachan) your pitts order didnt contain any 2S batteries, so we havent tried to stop the order.
Bluefisherking, check your order.
   Bluefisherking (88%)
HI Jason, That's great if you managed to change my order before it shipped out this morning :-) Thank you!
Though when I look at it under My Orders it still shows the 2S lipos, ... but maybe that system doesn't update?
   Jason5001 (-7%)
You need to email support, they will update it for you. I just held the order for you, so it wont ship with the two lipo's before you got a chance to contact support.
   Bluefisherking (88%)
Hi Jason, I am slightly confused as the order status is "Shipped" - are you saying that it hasn't actually shipped?
In fact I had already sent an email to support, a couple of days before it changed to "Shipped".
Please could you let me know whether it has actually shipped and whether Support have the information they need?
   Tony (73%)
Hi Jason, I am going to be another that falls into this issue. I ordered 2 2s batteries specially for this plane, but it appears mine might have already shipped. Anything you can do to help?

Hi Jason, Mine arrived today with a 2S 1000mAh Lipo pack in the order. I have lots of 800mAh 2S lipos but no suitable 3S lipos and they are now out of stock! Do you know when they are due? Any chance of a free 3S when they are back in stock?
Thanks!

   pinguin6218 (50%)
I tried to make a maiden flight today, but not succeed. It seems that the motor is under power. Just after takeoff, it stall. I use 3S 1000mAh battery. Any idea why?
3/4/2010
Herkalees (81%)
I received this plane today. Have tried posting a review but will not post for some reason
Anyway, please tell me how a 400 gram model is meant to fly on 40 watts of power? Yes thats right, stock system runs at 5 amps, 40 watts. If you order this plane make sure you order another power system.
Plane itself is a beauty. Well designed and well thought out. Very strong foam and looks a million dollars. This could have been a home run Hobbyking but instead it falls short.
   nicolas (78%)
Maybe HK will change the power system ?
   Jason5001 (-7%)
Don't knock it until you fly it.
Let me know how it goes!
   Jason5001 (-7%)
When i flew mine i had a 1,000mAh 2S 20C pack in it which lasted all of about 8min. Thats about 130W of power. More than enough.
   Jason5001 (-7%)
I experimented with a few propellers, however. I think if you increase an inch in diameter you will find the performance much better.
   Herkalees (81%)
A little annoyed but dont care as its such a great little base to work with. I did try and fly it stock. The plane barely left the ground. Also, I couldn't get the ESC to arm. Tried adjusting throttle trim as well but no go. 130 watts is over triple the power mine had. ???????
   Jason5001 (-7%)
Guys, after testing a sample from stock this morning it seems that the best battery is a 3S. The ESC will not arm on 2S and the motor does not draw enough current.
Use 3S and you will be making around 90-110W in power (tested with Watts Up meter this morning) which is plenty of power for this model!

Sorry fellers what PROPELER MUST HAVE AS SPARE PART'S???
   Jason5001 (-7%)
It is a 9inch prop.
We will have spare parts in 14 days.
However, a GWS 9x5 or 9x6 would be fine.
This customer was awarded a credit for their answer.
   Herkalees (81%)
Jason, mine came with a 7x5 prop. What is meant to ship with?
   Jason5001 (-7%)
Thats a correction, im sorry.
The test unit i was using had a 9inch prop, but thats way too large for 3S.
The standard prop works well with 3S, or you can switch to a GWS thin SF 8060 on 2S for good performance also.
   pinguin6218 (50%)
I tried with 8x4.3 prop and the motor got hot. I wonder what would happen if using 9x5 or 9x6
3/2/2010
Bluefisherking (88%)
Yay - it has changted from backorder to Reserved :-)

But could someone let us know what size prop is on this plane, please ?
2/25/2010
Herkalees (81%)
I see my order went from "Backorder" to "Processing" :-)
I hope that means some stock arrived.
   Herkalees (81%)
Now says "Shipped"
I will now do "The dance of joy".........
   Bluefisherking (88%)
Hmmm, my order says "processing", but the item still says "Back order" - what does that mean? Did I miss the first allocation and I have to wait for the next ship?!?

err... what's this plane doing in the GLIDERS subdirectory? :-)
   Tony (73%)
Maybe it turns into a glider as soon as you turn the motor off? *-)
   Felar Furlong (85%)
highly unlikely. i have several bipes and they all do same thing when i turn motor off. fall down from the sky.

Hi Jason.
Any little EDF(50mm) plane in the near future from HobbyKing???.

This seems a great plane with very good shipping weight, and battery needs. Well done.
   Robachan (83%)
I second that, ingeniums. I would love to see more planes like this (non-3D), EPO or EPP in the 200 to 350g range. Lots of manufacturers are coming out with them now. My 325g Hobbyking Pitts Special EPO is on pre-order! Really looking forward to it!

Can 3 servos give the controls needed? aileron, rudder, elevator? That's 4 servos, right?
   Jason5001 (-7%)
Take a look at the sub-pictures.
There is 1 servo for the ailerons. This is a light-weight plane so it doesnt need two aileron servo's and 2 servo's would add another 9-10g to the total flying weight.

whats the difference between this and the last pitts (blue) other then the 4 ailerons? Will this one 3D? Or only sport flying?
   Jason5001 (-7%)
This is slightly smaller (only by a hardly noticable amount) and it's EPO and the shipping weight is very very nice..

sebas (59%)
Can it run on a 3S 500mah?
   Eric1180 (10%)
Sure if you drop the prop size.. But that would only do 2 things 1. Add more weight to a already light plane 2. The drop in prop size and increase in RPM would increase the speed. So i am not really sure you would want that ..?

But if you have 5 3S laying around then if is fine as long as you, drop the Prop size and make sure the AMP's aren't to much for the ESC
   Bluefisherking (88%)
Yes it runs fine on 3S 500mAh 20C lipo.

Pre-order? That is something new...
   Jason5001 (-7%)
We will only do pre-orders when we know for certain when the stock arrives. This means when we have control over when it's going to arrive. Not when the factory tells us.
In this case we have two 40ft containers sitting at the port waiting for the Chinese New Year holiday to finish before delivering to our warehouse. Because we know the exact date, we're allowing Pre-Orders.
   LAzyZero (65%)
Jason will the Pitts also arrive the new german warehouse before summer?

Best

Christian
   Jason5001 (-7%)
There is a 40ft container somewhere on the Indian Ocean right now, making it's way to Hamburg Germany. Sadly, it doesn't have the Pitts Special inside it. However it does have many other planes.
Euro warehouse will be updated mid march with the new local stock.

:-)

Gday jason in reply to your comments on my reveiw my esc did not arm on 2s or 3s and the result of the lipo specs being wrong cost me money only a few bucks but a hassle none the less. The pitts has been fixed up and repowered and yes it flys great stock prop 18amp 3s 1300 kv turnigy but maybe if you include full motor and esc spec in the futurethis problem could be avoided all the best OZIFLY
   Bluefisherking (88%)

Gday the Turnigy 2730 Brushless Motor 1300kv
fits with no mods fits perfctly and flys great
Cheers.

When you replace the motor, do you need to cut the nose to have access to the screw? What do you use to attach the prop?
