DZ500 FPV/Sport Model Balsa 1020mm (ARF)

DZ500 FPV/Sport Model Balsa 1020mm (ARF)
DZ500 FPV/Sport Model Balsa 1020mm (ARF)

The DZ500 has been designed with FPV in mind but it also makes a great sport flyer, simple and cheap to build, it's heaps of fun no matter how you use it!

The nicely constructed balsa airframe has been naturally weighted "tail heavy" to account for the additional weight of FPV equipment, the nose has also been shaped in such a way as to make the DZ500 ideal for camera installation. The model comes with instructions and hardware, including CF wing mounting tubes, being a bare airframe, this allows the builder to choose exactly how he wants to equip the model.

The DZ500 is huge amounts of fun to fly, it is very stable with great slow fly ability, however, it can be suprisingly fast and aerobatic! Most models of this genre are foam, the DZ500 is just that little bit different, it is a nicely made balsa alternative to a foamy wing that is cheap to build, fun to fly!

Features:
Nice Quality Balsa Construction
Expertly Pre-Covered

Hi What points should be taken into account so that an airplane fly?
Philip  1 points - 2/23/2013

Hi, has anybody built this kit. Mine turned up this week (with a broken spar in the left wing) and don't know how to attach the ailerons. A photo would suffice, thanks for your help.

Hello can you tell me what de cg of this plane is in inch or for our dutch folks in cm
 RattleSnake 361 points
It flys well when the CG is set to 50mm (2 inches) from the wing leading edge.

Thanks for the info

LOOKS LIKE FRONT IS FOR A CAMERA ** BACK END FOR PUSHER ** RUDDER EXTENSION TO CLEAR PROP ** CLARK Y FOR HEAVY LOAD AT SLOWER SPEEDS ** LARGE BOX FOR PLENTY OF BATTERY AND OTHER FPV EQUIPMENT .
 RattleSnake 361 points
You have no idea about this plane do you?
 volto 40 points
Spot on other than Clark Y and rudder. lol
Lon  92 points - 5/31/2012

i wonder if someone designed a different rudder for this thing, since the one provided, would get in the way(my opinion), then would it fly better or worse, but its worth a try! This seems more practical as a sport or aerobatic plane than a aerial photo or FPV plane anyhow!
 BrianB192 1294 points
This is made to use V tail Mixer , ,as you would with any delta Wing,.
 Lon 92 points
thats not what i was getting at., The rudder looks as though as if it woulld be in the way for some types of motor combinations that use bigger props. I.E. the rudder thats on there (in my opinion) is ugly and excessive. Maybe one that is taller than longer in this case, that would give more stability for whatever you would use it for.
 BrianB192 1294 points
yes i wil make a Elevator separate rebuild hear ,,mine wont fly ,,i need to do something to make it work on 3s ,,as its seams a bit wrong but i will make it fly ,,i will not give up.
 RattleSnake 361 points
This plane flys VERY WELL, it is very agile in the air.
 BrianB192 1294 points
i did a flight with it , and got between the branches of a tree . than landed . with out crash,

HEY GUY'S. THIS WOULD MAKE A GREAT SLOPE GLIDER. VERY MUCH LIKE THE AMERICAN LITTLE PLANK..
 Kellyann 16228 points
Tom you think. I think with a little electric it will be a lot of fun. So powered or not I think we have a new plane for our hangers!!!
 jetson3000 28 points
I don't think it should be be suitable as slope glider..it seems to be not very durable fot that scope. Better with a little electric also for soaring..
 Amit 12 points
I actually think that will be a great slope glider.. One year ago a build glider like that and it was very fun and smooths. I recommended :)
 jetson3000 28 points
maybe for soaring..not for sloping..
 kallum 1 points
anyone thought of a small nitroon one of these???
 BrianB192 1294 points
no nitro will realy suite ,15 maby buy its very weak ,,needing strengthening with Ply under cockpit .

Google! it's probably under a different name though! also many free plans out there!
 glydr 94 points
You would probably like the 'Zippy', free plan in Feb 1987 Aero Modeller. While googling to refresh my memory I found the plans currently for sale on ebay UK for 2 pounds plus post.
 DriesRC 285 points
* glydr: can you post a link with the plans of the 'zippy'? I don't seem to find it on google
 Amit 12 points
The "guppy" glider look like that.. you can Google it!
 glydr 94 points
Hi DriesRC, I think someone bought it ... however the magazine which features the glider (and I believe also the 'free plan' is on ebay uk as item no. 310378952541). Would post the link but it will automatically get removed.

There is a very short thread on RCG titled 'zippy slope soarer information' which has a copy of the article but (of course) not the plan.
 BrianB192 1294 points
Any Light weigh Delta wing Is as you say Sloap glider to good extent and More, This is the Best Shape for that ,
 BrianB192 1294 points
i changed my mine hear ,,now i have tryed to fly it not yet succeeded
Nikers  192 points - 5/28/2012

That is a weird plane....
 Scott 234 points
I wonder what it would look like with silver covering film? Can it get any stranger?
 thebobzilla 16 points
Landing gear would be a wonderful addition!!
 VirginiaJim 119 points
Put monsters in each of the cockpit holes!
 cr8tive_leo 177 points
It's a Bird. Can't you see the beak? The eye sockets, the tail feather... I'd add some feather decals on the top, and a simple line silouhette of a bird of prey on the sides, would look very cool. It's not weird, it's actually clever looking. I love it.. just waiting for next pay to pick this up. sweet.
 Knut 34 points
Nothing new, there was the American designed plank which looked very much like it. Except is was a glider. this is about 30 years back. I owned one.
 Scott 234 points
Weird can be good/clever! I wasn't sayin I didn't like it cr8tive leo, I think it's pretty cool/different too!
 Scott 234 points
Other colours would be good!
 MADDIVER 178 points
Will be perfect plane for FPV!!!
 beezlebub 226 points
hehe, it's like a balsa alula...
 zSimon 29 points
Bird's the word!
 deltamike 17 points
*Knut, in the same era, remember the 40 glo powered tractor plane with the same layout? Called the Simitar.
 Knut 34 points
Sure do deltamike, and that IMHO was ugly, never saw one fly though because i was only into gliding.
 stewjw 219 points
Looking at the back its odd the vertical stabiliser overhangs where the motor is. With FPV gear its going to be heavy and unless you've got a folding prop, without undercarriage you can expect a lot of broken props on landing. Personally I hate undercarriages due to where I fly and their unnecessary weight. With those squared off wings I also wonder about it tip stalling. I have lot of reservations about this but I like the idea.
 DriesRC 285 points
I fly my gliders with a normal prop (so no folding prop) and it doesn't break at all, I've never had a broken prop, when it touches the ground it just comes horizontaly. If your motor is still running though, a prop can brake, but if you just let it spin without a break on the brushless, it should do well (in my opinion)
 Lon 92 points
stewjw, if your worried about tip stalling, try some washout on the ailerons

The undercarriage part i agree on when it comes to this type of craft, but if you can slow it down enough (without stall) and land softly on grass, your good!
 stewjw 219 points
With a bit of practice you can get it to stall just above the ground so that it plops down. That's the most effective way I've found with this type of loaded plane, mind you accidents can happen. I'm fairly new to the hobby and washout configurations is something I need to play around with.
 stewjw 219 points
If it wasn't for the high postage to the UK, I may have given this a go.
 BrianB192 1294 points
Its Well Worth Trying ,,If your Not flown Delta ,, go Hard ,,you will Love it .
 ShawAero 2 points
Bill Evans with his simitar series were similar concept. Many published in RCM and downloadable for free now.

This is an excellent flying plane. Sporting a d-2826 2200kv powered by a HK red brick 30A esc, spinning a 8x3.8 prop taken from My HK Canadair. Using 2-2cell(7.4v) 2200mah for a total of 4400 mah at 7.4v, this plane flies for 27 1/2 minutes. Draws 34A on the bench, just what the motor spec is, perfect. Pretty fast for a two cell, flies nice at half throttle. Flies like My HK Combat and Slope soaring Wing but much more precise, no flexing. Can't wait to see what it will do with a 3 cell and 6x4. Highly recommend this plane,an excellent fast flyer. You won't be disappointed. Already ordered M second one.Mounting FPV camera and transmitter as I'm writing this.

Haven't flown it yet. It's from another company that has them pre-cut. HK appears to assemble and cover them. Build quality is OK - I'd recommend re-gluing the attachments for servos before attaching, this was my only real complaint. Wings get glued to the carbon spar, they are not attached by screws, so once it's assembled, that's it. Trailing edge and elverons are not pre-slotted, but this only takes a few minutes. I set mine up with thd D2826-10 and a 7 x 4, which I think is as large as you can get on there in terms of diameter. With a 30A ESC, it's triggered overload on the bench once. It won't push vertical with a 2800ma 3-c battery, just based on bench running it and weight. No wheels. Bottom is balsa, so it's not going to take much to ding it up. There is no place to mount the battery, so you'll need to fabricate a tray... It might be interesting as a float plane, haven't decided. Launching it is going to be interesting. It's medium weight for hand-toss and you'll need to get clear of the 8" prop that is turning pretty good RPM. I'll report back when I've flown it.
