Ryan STA EPO (Red and white) PNF (USA Warehouse)

Ryan STA EPO (Red and white) PNF (USA Warehouse)
Ryan STA EPO (Red and white) PNF (USA Warehouse)

The Ryan STA is an icon of the golden age of aviation, quickly replacing the attractive but under-powered Ryan ST (Sports Trainer), the STA (Sport Trainer Aerobatic) won the 1937 International Aerobatic Championship, leading to immediate interest from the US military, if you are lucky, you can still see one of these fantastic looking aircraft doing the air show circuits.

On the other hand, you could own and fly your own! We loved the Ryan STA Plug n Fly so much when testing that it became a firm favorite with all the team. Made from tough EPO, we have really put this model through it's paces and it is still going strong! Scale detail is impressive for a foam model, the huge wheel pants, rigging wire, panel lines and wing struts give an impression of a much larger model, both in the air and on the ground.

There is plenty of power from the pre-fitted motor for classic aerobatics like stall turns & barrel rolls, yet the generous STA wing area makes for a superbly balanced model that is just as happy flying at scale speed. Likewise, the pre-fitted servo/control surface combination is perfect, the result is one of the smoothest EPO models you are ever likely to fly.

Five out of five on this model. The only minor issue I found was the wires on the ESC are long and puts the ESC far back in the fuse under the canopy. Easy to get to but may not get enough air to stay cool enough. I just cut an extra hole in the nose behind prop and an exhaust hole under tail near screws for air flow. Build was easy, instructions are about normal, mostly pics but they do tell you what screws to use. The wire support struts are just decoration. Use some needle nose pliers to crimp the springs close, they will pop off on bouncy landings.

Flying was great, nice speed and handling. To balance CG I used a 3s 1800mah ParkZone Lipo and it was dead on. No extra trim at all. Battery bay is long so put a piece of form behind lipo to prevent sliding. Flew hands off with this set up and she just cruised along on 1/2-3/4 throttle. Rolls, loops and climbs with no problems. Big wings gives for long glides. Cut power and she will glide right in on landings but start your glide path back because she will glide long. Gear is big but I don't know about grass with those big wheel pants, I was on pavement so I had no issues.

All in all a great Flyer at a good price. Oh and the wires whistle through the air...............Happy Flying.

Advanced flyers only. Stalls without warning, and when it stalls it "tip stalls" i.e. falls to the side and starts to spin. Landing is therefore very difficult. Land straight-in and at high speed. The wires are mainly decorative, and are very loose. They will fall off easily so put a dab of glue at both ends of each wire.

I really liked the look of this plane. Very detailed EPO. The rigging wire should be double checked right out the box I found my mounts to not be glued in very well and after having tension on them for only a day had already came loose. Like another review stated definitely not a beginner plane. I know because I'm a beginner. It made it though my first major crash with only a broke wing added a spar and glued it back together but my second dirt nap sealed its fate. Tip stalled and broke wing in two places, broke firewall and snapped fuselage in half. Only if HobbyKing stocked spare parts. I would love to give this plane a second try. I still recommend buying this plane it is priced right and someone who has a little more experience could definitely have a good fun afternoon of flying with this plane. One last note it has the option for flaps so go ahead and grab you another two servos and install them.

I've had this plane about 5 months now. Not for beginners but good for taking the next step. I lost track of the number of crashes and mishaps but with all the glue and epoxy its still flying!(most of the wires are long gone) It will loop, roll, and fly inverted quite well, but set your rates low and expo high at first. The ailerons are very sensitive. I land it in grass so calling it a "landing" is a stretch. It doesnt like the wind very well either. It is a fun little airplane to fly. bu
