The GeeBee R3, where modern design meets classic beauty. Few could dispute, that this is one seriously good looking aircraft. The sleek lines, rear set cock pit and checkered engine cowling all say one thing, speed! Although never built in full scale, the GeeBee R3 captured the imagination of the modeling world and turns heads when ever it takes to the skies.
If your hanger was ever short of a model it would be this one. A perfect park flyer size that can be transported with ease and flown to impress. We fell in love with this model the minute it landed at HobbyKing HQ and could hardly wait to take it out for a test flight. Once in the air the GeeBee R3 displayed its pedigree with solid flight characteristics you would only expect from a larger model. The GeeBee R3 can be flown on 2S or 3S if you want to unleash a little extra speed, and believe us, this model flys so well you will want to take it to the limit.
All you will require to complete this model is your own transmitter and receiver (Tx/Rx) and a 1000mAh 2S lipoly or a 800mAh 3S lipoly.
I run a 3 cell & two blade 9x5E with NO undercarriage:-)
Looks a 100% better in the sky & seems to fly very fast.
Now has a lighter wing loading so stall speed is down also but it still needs a good turn of speed on approach. Long grass is the go:-)
A little build tip. Centre wire hook under the body may pull out when you attach the wires. Position and glue it well while your in the build process. Also, it's easier to pull the rudder holder off the main section and then click it on, then re-glue it* save compressing the tail section while trying to force it on.
Where is the CG for this plane? Got the plane, and like the other reviewer, no plans or instructions. The plane assembly is easy to figure out, but I would like to know where the CG should be on it. I looked under the Files tab, but it only shows me battery options.
had myself a little scare about the esc in this model due to it's label so i contacted support and here is their response
Dear Shane ,
Thanks for contacting the HobbyKing Support Team.
I get this question all the time and It is a 20a esc.
For some reason the factory puts 2x10a. I guess that equates to 20amp but it does cause some confusion at times.

Someone really doesn't know what they're doing! For Abdulahad100: If you click on files (purple tag) and click for the manual, you get instructions for an AT-6!!! I need instructions (manual) for the GeeBee R3!!! Can anyone at Hobby King accomplish this task????
Got mine today. No instructions. No owner manual. No Center of Gravity information. Can only guess as to proper location for receiver and battery. If you can't at least include one piece of paper with much needed information, then give us a link to a web site with this information. I expected more quality than this from Hobby King. I've spent a lot of money on your products.
bikedriver, the battery goes into the little hatch under the nose, receiver goes into the space under the wing. if you have got the battery that has the wrong connection for the esc then you need to order www.link
Fitted mine with a nice 1400kv and an e flight 30a esc with nano tech 1300mah 3s . Also put some carbon fiber in the main wing . Also added an apc 8*4 2 blade prop. Thing Flys on rails. Super agile and fast. Very much recommended aircraft. Also a quick fix for the steel wing cables to keep them from coming off, put a dot of white glue on the plastic hooks they connect to. After theyre dry your cables will not come off no matter how much wing load you put on them. If you have to access the esc compartment just pick off the old glue. Comes off easy.

chosse this plane carfully...very difficult to fly even with years of experience. I stalled mine too easily when turning when on low throtle. this model has very small wings!
What receiver would be suitable for the GeeBee R3? Would an OrangeRx R610 be OK, or is it better to go for the OrangeRx R710 which has failsafe? Or something else?
Hi Chris,
I would go for the smaller R610, the 710 would be overkill. The plane is lively, but not really lightening fast, so you never fly too far away and range will not be an issue. I fly both my Geebee R3 and (much!!!) faster Rarebear with simlar receivers and found them to work fine.

More information about the esc asked!!!
Please let me know!!!
I have one that is doing nothing!!!
Thanks and greetings.http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/i mages/em_smile.gif
I was considering making turning it in a "fantasy Schneider cup racer" by adding some floats. Either make them from scratch, or maybe the ones for the Flyingstyrokit Supermarine or Macchi would work...
Yes, you just need to peel the canopy off with a knife, then glue it back or use small screws. This said, as the canopy is quite dark and the plane small and fast, you might not see it much...

recieved plane today. arrived in good shape. elevator slightly warped but ok. trailing edge of wheel pants were bent in plastic bag, delicate, no big deal. tail wheel bent at least 20 degress off center, tried to straiten but will bent another one. rudder servo not glued in well. hate the spinner. back foam piece of spinner is held to spinner by double sided. tape. hard to keep spinner centered , wobbles all over the place when motor spins. speed control is labeled 2 * 10a. i'm guess that it is a 20a esc beacuse it is too big to be a 10a. other than those issues plane is beauitful.

Hi All, Here is my review. This is based on 9 flights done yesterday using 1000mah 3S Turnigy 25C lipos.
This is a great little plane. Plenty of power, fast but not too fast and looks great. Handles quite well and will do all the usual aerobatics.
I did however replace the ESC with 25 amp turnigy plush as I did not want to risk the no name esc fitted. It might be OK but was not willing to gamble my beautiful R3 on it. Also came with elevator servo loose (no glue) so I took the opportunity to replace with HXT900. Other servos stock and seem OK.
Standard prop and spinner works well but I did glue it on, after carefully checking for wobble first. Be careful with prop front and back. Very similar and I fitted it backwards the first time. D'oh!
Does need expo and small throws but this is normal for a small plane.
Not for beginners but great fun for experienced pilots looking for something fun and different looking.
Very nioe plane and as usual from HK it is a true bargain. Flew almost stright out of the box with little trim. It came with a XT60 battery plug but description recommend also 2S. All the 2s batteries I have up to 1000 mAh are with JST plug but I used a 3S 1000 mAh which worked great with plenty of power. But battery compartment is small, Opening at lid is 24 x 40 mm and depth of battery bay is 85 mm but you need some space for the battery plugs so max length of battery should not be more than 70 mm or so.A Rhino 1050 mAh, 20C, 3S fits nicely. My plane flew out of sight and crashed but still repairable. But I have ordered two more of this plane, one for me as spare and second for my flying buddy. HK PLEASE CARRY SPARES FOR THIS PLANE (AND ALL OTHERS). Especially the thin steel wires with the spring have a tendency to disappear and the spinner is of foam, very fragile.

This plane performs way above my expectations!!!. I have flown it with the stock electronics/prop and spinner. Using a 3s 1300 nanotech battery I had 10min. flight times.
The little R3 has no bad habits, it can knife edge really well. Inverted flight is really easy, only needs a tiny bit of down elevator with the cg at 45mm behind the leading edge. Rolls are quite axial even without elevator & rudder inputs and general flight is very smooth and predictable. Landings are not too bad either (except for the grass). It can fly surprisingly slowly and did not seem to be prone to tip stalling.
The wheels are too small for landing on grass. You can easily remove them and handlaunch it. Without the landing gear the R3 flies much faster and looks great in the air. This is the best value plane I have ever flown!!!!!!
