Got this Motor for HK450 Pro Heli. Recommended ESC is indicated as 30A. I am using a 35A ESC which shuts down due to overheating. Bench test at full power Ampmeter reads 40A .
Needs 50A ESC - minimum in my opinion.
Now I dont have any motor for the parkjet. There is here another one that paul from rcfoamfighters tested and maybe I will choose that one or another heli motor as the 3850kv that costs only six dollars here.
To get that speed, I'd recommend a 2212-06 motor, don't sell them here but plenty of places do. You'll need a minimum 30A ESC, running a 6*4 prop you'll get massive thrust to weight. Or use a 40A ESC and a 6*5 prop and this thing will be ballistic. I use that motor/prop (6*5) on a couple of planes weighing 3 times as much and they do over 70mph
I'm running the H2218 3550KV w/ a 40amp esc and a 3s 2650 40c, on a combat wing XE-2. It goes 80 mph and does not heat up even after 1 minute plus at full throttle. Great motor if it will mount properly!
I ran a Turnigy 2627 3800kv, 30a esc, fitted a 2200mAh 40c in mine, with a 4.1x4.1, reached 121.2 mph, was to test with 4.5x4.5 and 50A esc today but crashed right after takeoff and destroyed it, a new one is now on its way to try that setup again :)
I used it on a 4.5*4.5 with 950mAh for 1 minute 30 secs top speed was 136 MPH on a 60CM span custom model. This was only pulling 31A according to my WATT meter.
I do plan to go to 6*6 and see what happens :P btw I'm using a 80A Turnigy plush for future swap outs.
I realize something now. This motor is rated 500W. At 3S, which is 11.1v, the ampere rating should be around 45A. But look at the ESC recommended by HK, 30A ESC??? You must be joking me. I tested this motor on all my 40A ESCs and I realize all the ESC turn super hot up to the point the ESC cut's down on the power. For this motor, you will require at least a 50A ESC or even a 60A. Yes it is a very powerful motor, if you give it the right ESC.
BTW, this motor gets kinda of hot. I think the design of this motor is not that good where a lot of power dissapears due to heat loss.
The maximum rated power of 500W cannot be reached at 3s, but perhaps at 4 or 5s. Yes, a recommendation of a 30A ESC is correct. You need not only to chose the right ESC, but also the right propeller and/or gear ratio. A motor can get very hot even at low power (low voltage/rpm and high current/torque, due to oversized propeller). Such a motor may perform well 500W at 30A and 17V, but it can run ***r giving a lot of heat at 50A and 10V.
I am running this motor on a XE-2 COMBATWING w/ an APC 4.5 x 4.1, 40amp ESC, 2650 40C 3s battery. Draws 38 amps in a static test. Goes 80 at full throttle. Does not heat up even after a minute on full throttle.
The Pinion size depends on the main gear tooth qty, target head speed, motor KV, battery voltage, and motor efficiency. The shaft diam. for this motor is 3.17MM, and pinion t you need you have to calculate it using the formula. In hypothetical case of a 450 trex clone with 150t main gear, 11.1 lipo and 3000 head speed desired you should use a 13t pinion.
I ran in that problem once and it was the program of the ESC that was messed up, it was on the wrong cell count for the battery and wouldn't turn the motor because it was set to 5s when it should have been on 3s, so it was on safety thinking the voltage was to low
Do you all find this motor noisy? Mine arrived and I noticed that at certain RPM, the motor vibrates a lot of makes a lot of noise. I am comparing this motor with my previous Turnigy Typhoon 2215 which was not so noisy. Have you guys done such comparisons in terms of sound and vibes? Could it be a bad bearing on this motor causing such sounds and vibes?
Yes I have done that and it feels better n sounds better now. But do your motors get real hot? After about 2 battery packs, I cannot even touch the body of the motor and it is very very hot. I'm using the Mystery 40A ESC, Turnigy 2200mAH 20C and 11T pinion. Is it supposed to be this hot? The Turnigy Typhoon wasn't this hot as I can remember.
Yes, I was surprised how fast does it heat. First I fought that the heat comes from bearing because the heat starts near front bearing and it heated even when running without load. It was better when running at high speeds. Than I found the magnets are not equally glued. ESC could have problems in this case with timings. I use K-Force 40A with low and mid timings at 12kHz. Try 11 teeth pinion and higher motor speeds. It could help to cool the motor. I have ordered Typhoon 2215 to try.
How was the Typhoon in comparison? This motor is really making my ESC n the motor itself too hot. I'm concern the heat protection for the ESC kicks in the ESC will shutdown when it gets too hot. At present after flying two battery packs, the motor n ESC is too hot to touch. It takes about 5 min to cool down. Do u all think this will spoil the ESC or motor?
Now I have 4 flights and many tests with Turnigy Typhoon 2215 and everything was nearly cool. Even the battery was not so warm as before. I would recomend to switch to Typhoon motors 2215 or 2218 types.
I do agree. I previously owned a Typhoon 2215 until a major crash caused the main shaft to break. If i recalled, the typhoon ran cooler n ESC was also cool. then I changed to this motor n blindme it was super hot, sucking lots of power. I think I will purchase the turnigy typhoon 2215 again.
its your wish you can keep motor wire in any of color wire of ESC.if its the motor is not rotating in desired direction just swap two of its wires.its is brushless motor there is no restrictions where to connect the wires.if it helps credit me.
The H2218 is a powerful motor and draws a lot of current, hence the heat. Just keep an eye on it after each flight, should be fine but if it gets too hot let it cool down for a few minutes.
5 minutes of use will be about right for that combination, depending on flying style.
keshav the capacity if the battery depends on the all up weight of ur plane.a 3S 2200mAh is decent choice and u can use upto 3000mAh.but going beyond increases the battery weight.i can help u more if u state weight of your plane and its wing span.
for that wing span u would require 3S 2200mAh but not more than that.if u are using a propeller i say you better use another motor such that u will have more advantages.this is a heli motor and very few motor mounts fit to this.
The best pinion will depends on the purpose of your bird : hard 3D, soft 3D or just flying aroud : 13T for all purpose (included soft 3D), take a 14 or 15T for hard 3D. Anyway the H2218 will fit and as Helimike said, don't forget the connectors
1) How do you know which cables are each one? the three cables are black...
2) what gold connectors do you need for these cables? 3,5mm? they are quite thin cables.
3) What Shrink Tube do you use? 4mm one?
1) Just test it by plugging the cables into the esc and letting it run. If it turns the wrong way, switch two cables and it will be fine. Once you know the correct connection, you can use coloured shrink tube to differentiate the three cables so you won't have to think in the future.
2) Either 3mm or 3.5mm will do fine. Personally I use 3mm without any trouble.
3) No clue if I'm honest... Just use one that fits *-)

The motor shaft flat spot sits a little to low for a 450 pinion as is stated above. Just made a new flat spot and all is fine now.
The motor comes with screws and washers thats always oke.
Gonna test it soon.

Finally the flight review. Just the right head speed with the 13T. Plenty of power and about 75pcnt of the flight time of the 2215H. Warm at the end of the flight but not too hot. Perfect motor for 450 Pro. 5 stars, thanks HK!

This motor came nicely packed, enough and fitting hex bolts and washer.
I have done about 16 sporty flights with this motor having the motor shaft covered with a 13T pinion on 95pcnt flat curve. This motor definitely likes 25/30C LiPo's. It runs nice on 20C but when you want to use the collective/cyclic a lot the 20C is to weak.
I do not give much for long flight times as I tend to land after 5 minutes anyway. So no flight time data.

Works well on my HK450, 13T pinion, Mystery 40A speed controller. Nice that screws and washers are included.
