Hobby King Scale Airport Windsock (rip-stop)
Made from Porcher® UV proof paraglider ripstop nylon. The HobbyKing windsock is lightweight and resistant against prolonged wind, rain and sun damage. The lightweight material also means it's able to indicate lighter winds, critical for R/C planes.
The windsock kit comes complete with pole and wire pre-installed.
Length: 800mm Inlet Diameter: 250mm
Porcher®, a registered trademark of Porcher Industries, France.
HK has every item figured with a bunch of extra packaging and weight that they figure covers the extra "behind the scenes" costs of handling and operation. It's tough, but it's there system.
Clearly the product is intended to be supplied with a pole and THAT is the reason for the extra packaging. At some point they decide to omit the pole but leave the charge. Yet, the description still clearly states a pole is included. This isn't a "system", its a mistake. And a mistake that, if not rectified with each customer that over-paid for shipping and did not receive their pole, is fraud.
I dont want to start something here but I thought that every platinum client got a free wind sock every year for his /her flying club not only to promote safety but also to promote the fantastic products, best prices, and great service from Hobbyking,.....Im now waiting with bated breath regards
PB
Oh Hi Gary I cant quite remember where I heard it or read it for that matter..... maybe I dreamt it..... but any way its great idea ....and I think we should all club together and pettion Hobbyking and to get our gratis hobby socks ..
hobbykingsocks ..rocks ..peace PB
What a ridiculous (read: stupid) way to make an assertion. You dream something up one day, so you write it as though it is fact? "I thought that bushy said he'd give me $100 a week for logic lessons. I want my money Bushy!". And now you owe me because that thought came to my head one day? Why not word that as, "Hey, I've got a great idea for you HK..."? Yeesh.
Ohh S mack... now I know the S stands for in youre name you really shouldnt belive everything you read now that would be down rght Stupid wouldnt it
PB
I hope you realize the phrase "don't believe everything you read" is a warning to the wise who are reading... its not an excuse for moron writers to write BS wherever they go. LOL... so basically you're saying "I'm a liar and you're a sucker for believing what I wrote". Well, A) I obviously didn't and B) it shows your lack of education to the Nth degree.
CofG would depend on the windspeed. So best answer would be - Highly variable but more consistent when used with a 3200 kv motor or in hurricanes. Tee hee
It is only in one warehouse.
It long was absent, www.link 1-1,5 months.
I think that it will appear in U.S. but not soon.
It has a weight 79g, the parcel shouldn't be the road.
It is necessary to wait long only.
Sally have a look at the price. I say why not. I looks cool anywhere. I make a great gift. But the real reason is when flying you cannot easily bend and grab a peace of grass and it is impossible to watch. So it is a must for landing. When the wind gusts just at the wrong time. But with a wind sock you get a heads up before you hit the ground. Also I like what David said "I put one at my home field (big yard behind the house) so that from the house I can see if it's worth gettting a plane ready to fly before I even walk outside." Great idea. I hope this helps.
Use a discarded outrunner motor that still rotates and mount it on top of a pole.Make a 6 inch blade with a hole in it and attach it to the motor shaft with a nut and to the wind sock. The sock will rotate with the slightest breeze.
I just put the short tube end into top of a stiff hollow pole .... rotates fine with wind, no need for any fancy bearing / turning gear ... The tube piece is long enough to not need fixing into the pole. 3 guy lines out and it's steady as a rock. the pole is actually a telescopic decorators pole for use with a roller on walls.
it'l give you a rough guess of the wind bt its mostley so you can see the direction at a quick glance, looking at the picture of the sock i'd say that it was about a 5-6 mile an hour wind when they took the photo if it was at 90 degress then it would indicate about a wind of about 10 mph, hope this helps
Windsocks are mainly used for telling the wind direction. If the wind is strong enough for the sock to stand straight out, only larger IC powered aircraft should be flying.
That is true for a calibrated wind socks at airports.this one is not calibrated straight out is probably 12 to 14 mph instead of 25 for a calibrated windsock.so these are more for just wind direction..and they are cheap and work well.
some of you guys are far too afraid of the wind! :) I was flying yesterday with it "standing straight out" and that was with a HZ super cub, a converted Air Hogs glider, and a pair of teeny tiny Nine Eagles planes (glider and the Yak 54 Micro). This windsock is so light it stands straight out with just a light breeze.
As long as you don't leave it out 24 hours a day, just use it when you fly it will last a very long time. My club has one similar to the HK windsock, used every Saturday and Sunday for over 20 years.
Every 3 or 4 months! ? It's taken nearly a month for mine to arrive and is still not here! ! Yet have received 2 canopies from Hong Kong ordered just days before! !
No, You will have to build your own stand and pole setup to get some hieght from the sock,I found by mounting on an 8 foot pole is the best, You really need to know the wind when you are landing, it is most important low to the ground.
i drilled a 1/8" hole about an inch into the top of one my 5-6ft tall fencepost around the flying field then inserted a fiber glass dowell into the hole snug & slid the windsock over the dowell, it works great & its easy to set up & take down.
its a nice product especially for the $$ & its really usefull too!
I order one 2 years ago and did not come with a pole. The windsock was used til someone stole it very strong and light. Will fade and branding can be removed if you do not want to advertize.
I just got one and it didn't come with a separate pole. It has a small hollow tube (pole) attached to the big ring on the windsock at the top and at the bottom. Any dowel will allow it spin around into the wind. Great product for a great price.

It is functional but at the same time it is mostly fun. All airfields should have one up. I have had two stolen from the field but not worries just get a new one at this price is no problem.
Sally, not everyone fly small aircraft, I can and have flown in winds strong enough to blow a model backwards down the runway with the motor idling. If the wind is steady (not gusting) it's OK to fly larger aircraft, only since small electrics came into fashion has the wind become a problem.
IMHO not really 100pcnt to determine whether it's too windy for you to fly. For this purpose I use my anemometer. When I receive mine, whenever my other back ordered items are in stock I would use this to determine the wind direction.
Hello Sally like kellyman sais these look great anywere,We out them up at the rc fleild more for looks,It makes are flying feild look like a real airport!
Ha that is fine but I keep my eyes on my plane and the sky. When landing I look at the strip, the plane and the area. Also you can get micro wind pits. I like the idea that I am able to see, at a glance, what is happening where I am landing.
I put one at my home field (big yard behind the house) so that from the house I can see if it's worth gettting a plane ready to fly before I even walk outside.
Actually it works pretty well, and for 2.99, why not. Cant put much of a ribbon on a 2.4 antenna anyway. I did find this slips right over the antenna on my car, so easy to pack up when done.
It is very cheap and when you are flying you do not have time to check wind with grass. It is very BIG, so you can perceive it subconsciously. I hope this help. 20 cents pls!
A must in every airfield or club. It´s very cheap and it´s really nice. Very Good! No debe faltar en ningun campo de vuelo ni club. Es muy barata y realmente bonita. Muy bueno!
I consider this a novelty item, hence you don't necessarily need to buy it. I use the same ribbon technique and my smoke trail from my cigarette. But I feel like having one put up somewhere higher on a pole so I bought it. HTH.
Yeah the photo is just for demonstrative puposes. You're supposed to use your own hand! Here's how! Step 1. Spin up heli to 9000rpm. Step 2. Quickly force (Right) hand into spinning rotors. Step 3. Use left hand to attach severed right hand to windsock pole. Step 4. Compare results to photo and enjoy! Hope this helps!
Is is very light and shows you excactly where the wind is blowing. i personally check it since i have it in my backyard everytime i go out to fly my plane it is an excellent thing
It's light but the material is quite stiff (ripstop) so it takes quite a blow to get it going. It looks nice but really only works as a windsock when the wind picks up considerably.
I use mine all the time, and love it. The fabric seemed a bit "stiff" at first, but the sun softens it up nicely, and it moves in a slight 1mph breeze. (I drilled a small hole through the aluminum tube about 2" down from the top, and inserted a piece of wire and bent it down on both sides, and mount it on a pole with a metal rod that slips into the hollow aluminum tube up to the wire I installed, and it rotates in a very light breeze every time).
I have one that mounts to the side of my camper van for flying trips away and it works great as a wind direction indicator. The lightness prevents it from being able to show how hard the wind is blowing but most of the time if it's that windy you can't fly. It is important to have it moving freely if you want it to work well as a wind direction indicator as well as a good looking windsock.
60g... coisa boba.... uso uma dessa no nosso clube de aeromodelismo!!! você precisará de uma ferro para entrar dentro dela e que frouxo para ela rodar lá dentro com o vento!!!
Hello German Steve, its a great wind-sock but unfortunately the hands DO NOT come in the stock format. Hands are given out, free of charge, upon arrival on Earth. But each person only gets one pair, so make sure you look after them :) Hallo Steve Deutsch, es ist ein groer Wind-Socke, aber leider die Hnde nicht in den Bestand Format kommst. Die Hnde sind out, kostenlos abgegeben, bei der Ankunft auf der Erde. Aber jede Person wird nur ein Paar, so stellen Sie sicher betreuen sie:)
I really want that hand! But it wasn't in the package, I had to look for one by myself. I have to complain for it, I'm very disappointed.
Do you think I can ask one to Dexter? :-D
the best thing to do is go to a local department store and get a pine rod / wood dowel. Sand or grind one end into a smooth domed shape, then cut the other end to the length you want & sharpen it to a point with a good knife. Shove the sharpened end into the dirt & slide the windsock's tube down onto the dowel & make sure its as close to true vertical as possible so the windsock doesn't fall to one side. also make sure the wire support on the mouth of the flag is nice & round. The smooth dome on
Maybe the only use for this windsock is to look from where the wind is coming. The sock itself is useless as it always stands like its windy. Its the wrong material for a well working windsock!!!
But its a nice gadget for the flying field to show the other pilots who has the biggest balls outthere *-)
Bin Entteuscht zu dem Preis habe ich von HK mehr erwartet.Habe vergangenes Jahr bei uns im 1 Euroschop selbe Qualitt erstanden. Farblich/optisch/bunter. Hngt als Deko in der Werkstatt.Da kommt der von Hk auch hin.
You'll need to make a bigger one to indicate windspeed, this one is simply to small. I Use a fibreglass pole (spare for tent) to stick it in the ground, the bending of the fibreglass indicates the windspeed :-)
the windsock itself is good quality, i would just like it a bit larger. but the rod is cheep steel. i had to replace it with aluminium just after 3week because it started to rust in every place. i also inserted a 8cm wide hoop from .2mm aluminium sheet on the first bit of the hose so it doesnt hang flat down. it also catches the wind better this way. so with some little modifications its very useful!
Zu dem Presi habe ich mehr erwartet. Wir als deko in der Werkstatt bleiben. Habe dort schon einen bei uns gekauften hngen. 50% billiger und optisch farblich schner.
This "sock" is fine looked on an airfield. The people at us are very happy-was conveniently to supervise force and a wind direction by preparation for flights. This Windsock is not afraid of a rain and is good registration of our airfield.

I use this in my back yard, the kids love it, birds love it....That is all it can be used for. It sucks as a windsock. The picture you see is prety much how it looks with or with out the wind, it does not bend for the most part so there is no way to tell the light wind. Botmow line, good for kids sucks for planes. Good Christmas ornament as the tree toper. Two thubs down on this one. Probably worst product of 2009 IMHO.
I agree with you. This "ripstop nylon" is way too stiff to bee used for a windsock this size. It can show the wind direction over ~2-4m/s, but no way to estimate windspeed without a wind meter.
The photo was taken on an angle and adjusted afterwards in photoshop. If you scrunch the fabric a few times after you open the packet or let the windsock sit for a day or two it will loosen up and be more flexible. The fabric is also meant to indicate lighter winds than a full size windsock because you're flying model planes.
a good makeshift pole for this wind sock is to get a fishing pole and run fishing line throught the holes then get a decent sized stick and sharpen one end and tape the fishing pole to the none sharpe side then just hammer the tree in to the ground and done!
I have had this deal in my backyard for two months and the longer it hangs out there the better it works. Just needs alittle break in time. Great product HK, thanx.
It does great telling the wind direction. I just use a meter long peice of mylar tape at the end of the sock and it twists and turns in the slightest of breezes and is more noticeable than the sock. Tie the sock down well. Ours blew off in strong winds and it lost itself!
One word 'Cool' - Ordering 4. Only realy need two though. Your Primary and Seconary. Might Light one or two up with some LED Strips and/or Lumifly Glow Wire for night flight fun. That would look great.
For the price, its great for anything. I bought 2, and send one to a pre-school nearby. They hang it out in the playground. Kids go berserk every time it changes direction

Great product, I have put two ballraces in the steel tube with 4mm internal diameter. Piano wire with a washer soldered part way down it as a stop is then pushed down through the centre of steel tube, which is then attached to a suitable pole. This allows the windsock to turn with the slightest breeze.
