Seems that there isn't that much of a cost savings between buying a 9x or going for the 9XR...so - for just a bit more $$, it seems that the 9XR will be more flexible going forward - without having to add any mods. Is there a reason why people still buy the older 9X, when the price of a Smartieparts board brings it equal to or over the price of a 9XR with a module?
 v_max 3853 points
I think the only reason is 'complete' system with TX module/RX 9xr and 9xrpro are moduleless. So you need add RX/TXmodule set price to 9xr. Modding is not a big deal if you have a bit of electronics skils and soldering, then reflashing with er9x firmware is not a problem and costs few cents ( the price of connector if you do not have one on shelf with old wires). Yep... anyway I come to all this mods, threw out shock tx/rx and replaced it with FrSky combo, installed backlight.. replaced one pot with 6pos rotary switch.. reflashed with er9x...all this might be cheaper and easier if I start with 9xr plus JR combo from begining... But only grossmeisters think ahead so many steps...

Hey, I recommend you get rid of the battery pack (8 AAs) and replace it with a Zippy Flightmax 1800 or 2500mA LiFe battery (and get the appropriate charger). Th 9x comes with an 8 channel RX, which is a little big, but FlySky recievers work well with this TX. I later upgraded to a 9xr (much better TX, and changeable modules) and I am happy with that. Don't believe the 9xr battery will fit in the 9x, there are people saying it will, but it won't.

Can you connect a orange dsmx3 rx to this?
 fjmb58 472 points
Not unless you replace the standard tx module with a Orange JR Module "OrangeRX DSMX/DSM2 Compatible 2.4Ghz Transmitter Module"

Thank you oh8hwl..But if you check the description above, it says that the encoder is PPM/PCM. I thought it is compatible directly with out any additional PPM encoder as encoder type is PPM Number of Channnel: 8ch ppm/9ch pcm Display: 128*64LCD Support Type: Heli/Acro/Glid Support user: 8 Stick model: 4 Encoder type: ppm/pcm Subtrim: Yes

on RX side stock 9x has no combined ppm (cppm) output.. only separate channels one for each channel. as for description it descrbes comptibility with alternative TX modules which in fact has 2 major types of control signal input. ppm and pcm... for pixhawk you need encoder on rx side to collect all channels outs in a single cppm out

As alternative... you can order t9x moduleless and Frsky JR-Combo (TXmodule/RX) as rf part. V8FR rx from this combo can be reflashed with firmware which supports CPPM output. In addition you can order d4r-ii frsky receivers which are very small and lightweight and also support full 8ch cppm output,
 BuBu1 226 points
If you consider buying a FrSky module/receiver for using the CPPM output, then you may directly buy a receiver that is pre-flashed with the correct firmware, such as the D8R-XP.
 v_max 3853 points
No one of frsky rx-es preflashed with CORRECT cppm firmware.. both cppm compatible from factory d4r-ii, and d8r-xp has 18ms cppm frame which makes impossible to use all 8 channels (no room for synchro pause when all channels are at max value) For both RX-ex if you consider using 8ch cppm reflashing with 27ms firmware is required. But RX from JR-combo v8fr can also be reflahed too with 27ms firmware..The problem is that HK do not sell frsky TX modiules separately... so you need to choose combo either with v8fr either with d8r-xp which is much more expensive...Why to pay more for d8 if you can get the same with cheaper v8?

Hi What is the difference between Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter w/ Module & 8ch Receiver (Mode 2) (v2 Firmware) and (Mode 1) (v2 Firmware) Which one should I purchase to use with Pixhawk ( 3DR DIY Quad)
 Cameron 19 points
The difference between mode 1 and mode 2 is the location of the throttle stick. Mode 1 has the throttle and aileron on the right stick. Mode 2 has the throttle and rudder on the left stick. It all boils down to preference, it doesn't matter which one you purchase in regards to use with the Pixhawk, both will work.
 oh8hwl 7 points
Take notice that with pixhawk you will also need the ppm encoder module. For all I know, there is no cppm option in any of the 9X-compatible receivers.

14 thumbs up!
I am using an ASSAN hacker modulewith the 9X Tx.
With no recievers available I hooked up the Hacker as follows:
1- Top Pin signal
2- no connection
3- Red plus
4- Black -
5- no connection.

You can see photo's at www.link only gave it 4 stars as the TX did not work as recieved, one of the wires to the dual rate switch was not connected, an easy fix.

9 thumbs up!
I'd give this radio a 5 star rating but there are a few minor things that subtract points.
-One is that putting the batteries is a hassle, the 8 AA cell holder is OK, but the cable gets on the way of the cover and it takes a while to be able to close it, there's a lot of pinching of the cables involved so I shouldn't wonder if the insulation fails sooner or later requiring a replacement of the cables.
-Second is the very annoying and loud BEEEEP!!! you get with every-single-click you do on the buttons, seriously stressing to set up the radio at home, not good for conjugal life. To fix that I cut the leg that goes from a transistor to the speaker and added a 220 Ohm resistor in between.
-Third, no manual comes with the radio.
-Fourth setting up a V-Tail was a mind bending affair, I succeeded but I couldn't grok the logic of the procedure.

Besides those things it's a good product.

8 thumbs up!
I purchased this transmitter & Assan XJ8 module from HC. First I got around the switch error bug (thanks to that reviewer)
For me the Assan XJ8 just flashes red once on start up, but gives no steady red LED & will not go into pairing mode.
Assan say they don't know the problem & suggest putting XJ8 in another TX (I don't have one)
Anyone know how to test if TGY 9X or Assan is the problem? Thanks

Great range - over 3000m, but realy to big receiver. Also dont like to small battery compartment, and antenna linked with wire.
You Also can't mix with AUX cahnnels - you can oly mix first 4 cahnells. No manual - It could be at least link at this product to download manual for Turnigy 9x. Also don,t like that this transsmiter in almost never in stock, or that there smaller 6 ch receivers I waiting for more 3 months So from me only 3 stars.
