Turnigy Marine 180A Brushless Boat ESC

Turnigy Marine 180A Brushless Boat ESC

TURNIGY marine ESCs are built with USA IR mosFETs for long run times and less heat.
Boat escs have a different requirement to air or car escs. Their need for sustained high-amp draw makes plane escs unsuitable and car escs with large amp spike capability, unnecessary.
Thats why TURNIGY marine escs are designed purely for boats, and coated in anti-static then water resistant laquer to prevent shorting should the esc get wet. They can handle sustained high amp/volt loads and handle heat better than a car or plane esc.
What makes this ESC better than others?
-Well designed MCU, with efficient code makes for faster sync and accurate timing.
-Fast clock cycle MCU combined with efficient code means 100,000rpm cpu cycle*
-Efficient FETs reduce heat and deliver sustained switching at high amp/voltage.
-Well designed PCB (6 layer) and circuit diagram handles high-amp without burnout.
-Large motor comptability. Smooth starts, linear throttle curve.
-Active water cooled heatsink that actually works.

I am wondering if a Leopard 4082 2000kv 4 pole motor with a power output of 3500w would be too much for this esc to handle?
 ShamrinHM 513 points
Hi there, what is your motor amp draw (max)? if it is below 150A, for me these esc will handle it with no problem, running on 6S max..hope this help.
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
 Jake 2 points
Its max amp draw is 120 thankyou
 Jake 2 points
Also if I may ask, what speeds would I be able to roughly expect? Ive got a deep v pursuit (820mm) and want to run 4000mah 6s 40c lipo thanks
 ShamrinHM 513 points
Roughly on 6S, you may reach 60mph with it..but bare in mind that your lipo draw 160amp constant, im afraid it will not last long..just like mine because these esc need at least 200amp draw from lipo..just to share, im running my arowana 31" with these esc and 3974-2200kv motor on 4S with 43mm prop and it reached 50mph..so may be you can reach 60mph with your leo motor (bigger and powerful motor of yours)..hope this help.
 grsboats 22 points
I run a Leo 4082 2000kv with this esc on 6S 5.0A on a rigger for three minutes max and top speed of 85mph.If you take care of this esc we can say its a bulletproof one.see this *******youtu.be/ym0vOQDDbIc
 Jake 2 points
Okay thankyou very much for that info, Should I get a higher c rating battery and with more mah to last longer or could this cause heating issues? thanks
 ShamrinHM 513 points
Actually 40c should be fine (most people pick this), just increase the mah to 5000 or higher..normally the higher the c rating the faster the boat will run..the higher the mah, the longer the playing time..make it simple, 5000mah 40c will give 200amp draw..these is what i know..hope this help.

I use the stock replacement prop of the super surge crusher on my geico with a stock motor and a 90 amp esc and i reach 50mph on 6s. Can I reach 60mph with the dr mad thrust 1600kv 2400watt on 6s and the 3 blade prop?
valentin  3 points - 5/16/2013

Can i reach 60mph and can i use a 90 amp esc

What speeds can i reach with this esc and the dr mad thrust 1600kv 2400 watt on 6s (3 Blade prop)
 nlmbc 578 points
You will be in the 35500 max rpm range. Depending on your prop you can see speeds in the range of 50kmph and up

mine burntout today moisture got in under the heatsink :(.make sure you pull it apart and seal it up!

I just purchased a Genesis offshore brushless and curious to if the this Turnigy Marine 180A Brushless Boat ESC is agressive for the stock setup? batteries 3300.3S.35/20706 Turnigy nano-tech 3300mah 3S 35~70C Lipo Pack. right now i have the turnigy 120 marine 120a.

This esc will work fin with your setup.

How till this work with twin set up on two helli motors at 850kv-3025kv 1300 watt x 2 1. How many cells can i run on 1 esc with two of these. 2.How many cells can i run og 1 esc on each... http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__1723
0__Turnigy_3025_850kv_1300w_Helicopter_Motor.html
 nlmbc 578 points
Max amount of cells youcan use for either setup is 6s. Max of 22.2v no mater what battery type you plan on using. keep the motor at the 850kv if you are going with max voltage. kv x voltage = max rpm ( no load ) more rpm will mean you need a smaller prop to prevent burnout.

 ceylon 1 points
'ok . I am a bit confused about the my heli motors and the kv. Is it so that these adjust it self. How is the kv when it says in the data: 3025-850kv. How many cm (kg) boat in v-hull boat in a single set up vould be max. Any suggestion mr nlmbc ? :) Want to big and fast.
 nlmbc 578 points
the 3025 is the size of the motor. 850 is the kv so if the motor is capable of handling the 22.2v the max rpm you could see is 850x22.2= 18870rpm the higher the kv the higher the rpm yet less torque
valentin  3 points - 5/10/2013

Will this esc work with the dr mad thrust 1600kv 2400 watt in a miss geico

it will work yet watch your temp.

I have a 36 in cat I want to run 2 2200 kv 380 leopard motors I want to use just one 180 amp seaking esc is this possible
 Timothy 14 points
it is but you would get much better performance out of 2
Louis  1 points - 4/27/2013

440 for prop? And does anyone know what would be the best timing for the leopard?
Louis  1 points - 4/26/2013

A stock MG prop. And it was thick black smoke.Would have awesome to have caught it on camera, looked pretty cool.ESC,was in about 20 pieces. Wasn't to happy.Brand new setup.Motor and battery were ok.
 Peter 2 points
If you have a 3060kv motor on 4s you will have over 45000 rpm unloaded. This is too much for either sport running or racing. Use a lower kv motor or smaller prop or risk further destuction!
 ShamrinHM 513 points
Agreed with Peter, if i were you i will take/using motor in a range of 1900-2200kv for 4S set up..hope this help.

Had a hobbywing 90amp for about 20sec.or so and it blew.Definitely couldn't handle my leopard.Hope this 180 can pour the coal to it,with2,2s5200 40c80c burst in series.???? Or am I going to need bigger c rated batteries?Really want to run on 4s,have quite a few 2s lipos on hand already.
 nlmbc 578 points
It should handle it. What prop were you trying to spin when you got the blue smoke? Your batteries are fine.
Louis  1 points - 4/20/2013

I have a miss geico 29".Also a leopard 3660 3060kv.Will this esc work with 4s 5200 40c80 burst?And what would be a good prop?Thanks for any input.
 nlmbc 578 points
Yes the esc will work great for your application. Prop would be in the x440 range.

I plan on purchasing the 180 amp turnigy marine esc. Does this esc do data logging if so which programming box will work?
 MOHD 34 points
you can use Turnigy speed Controller Program card PRODUCT ID: TG-Prog
 nlmbc 578 points
for data loging you would need a data loging system like eagletree or one from frsky As you are looking at telemitry feedback capability.

I've got a vintage 1/5th scale nitro pickle fork circle racer and want to convert to brushless. Has a Rossi .80. Flexshaft to single surface prop. Looking into the Aquastar T20 and this esc running 6S. Any thoughts or ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 nlmbc 578 points
First thing before you get any electronics is to look at how you will seal the canopy down. You would also need to fill all holes in the hull that were there before for the nitro motor to breath. Also fill all holes in transom if any were for the exhaust. You are looking to have a huge sealed RX box when you end up tapeing the canopy down. You would also be running at least 2 6s packs to get the best AH you can. basicaly 22.2v an double the packs mah rateing to give you better run times. Have a look at electric boat forums for further help in getting your setup and other ideas.

Hi! Just bought a Traxxas Spartan, and planning on upgrading it. Will this esc do fine with the Leopard 4082-1600 kv on 6s? And if,is there anything else i need to have in mind, such as batteries, ubec? Thanks
 traxxasmad76 20 points
Yes it will iv got the same set up and it's great would upgrade the flex shaft

 TristanJones 49 points
6s I would use a ubec or rx pack in the boat. some have issues with the LVC (low voltage cutoff)so if it starts cutting out turn it down to 2.8 or OFF and TIME YOUR RUNS. if you upgrade the flex drive set up make sure you go 3/16 all the way. I run a leo 4082 2200kv on 5s in my genesis it FLYS runs and cool as.
 Aaron 25 points
you will need to upgrade the flex shaft for sure 3/16 easy job, and as said ubec for 6s

Thanks TristanJones, yup my lipos always under 60degC..im just afraid that my Aquastar motor will causes problem to my lipos with these esc..btw how is your Aquastar motor doing? thanks anyway..
 TristanJones 49 points
my 3974 is sitting on the bench, I was going to run it in my rigger but it doesn't fit. I used it for 2 packs in my genesis and it was very impressive. I think I might have to put my leopard in my rigger and the aquastar in the genesis.... or scratch build a new hatch for the rigger. :\ Hows yours going?
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
 ShamrinHM 513 points
Yeah..that Aquastar motor really is a beast..already broke my 4mm flexshaft 3x..spoiled my T120A esc and 4S 5000 maH 20C lipo..haha..may be my set up still not matched..and also now, im looking for another motor with lower amp draw here in HK..anyway thanks..happy boating.
 TristanJones 49 points
that motor with a T180 and 5000 50c bats should be fine. the 4mm flex is rubbish, upgrade to 3/16. promise hobby on ebay is good for parts. up grade strut can be found on OSE for genesis.
 ShamrinHM 513 points
Thanks man...you are very helping..very useful info/suggestions..thanks a lot..

Just ordered a Pursuit 32 inch, my first boat.
What would you recommend for ESC and batteries.
 TristanJones 49 points
I dont know what KV the motor is in your boat, but I would be running a 1800kv motor on 6s with this esc. Make sure you get at least 5000mAh 50c battery. Use an RX pack or UBEC if u put more than 4s through this esc and turn off the LVC and time your runs Please give credit if u find this helpful.
 ShamrinHM 513 points
I installed these esc on my 31" Arowana mono and running on 4S with 5000mah 30C (150a draw if im not mistaken)..im i going to ruin my lipos? or what will happen TristanJones..thanks
 TristanJones 49 points
Yes your bats are rated to deliver 150A. If the batteries are under 60degC after a run then they should be fine, providing u look after them as any other li-po.

This is the best boat ESC ever!

At last we have marine controller that is converted from rc cars not planes!
What does it mean?
You can set a lot functions that are useful in racing - like ultra fast throttle response. Air designed esc even with soft start turned off have lazy response.
And all of that at unbeatable price!

Thanks HC!

very good esc for the money. i use one of these in a magin one, with 2 turnigy 5000mAh 2S in series and a 39 piercing propeler, powered by a kd36-74-09xl 1900kv inruner, the boat is very fast and it does not generate heat. After 10 min full throtle the esc is warm. I cloked it at 80 km. i'm very happy with my esc.
