Hobbyking SS Series 18-20A ESC (card programmable)
The Hobbyking SS series comes with a limited range of programming functions and are designed to be plug-n-play. A perfect ESC for those looking for something simple to use and economic..
This unit can be programmed with the following programming cards; Turnigy, Thunderpower, HobbyWing + others
I have this ESC in my FT Old Fogey and was wondering if any one has experience this? I have already calibrated it. I've notice on start up I would accelerate and doesn't have the power for take off then I shut the throttle immediately and accelerate it again and appears to be a stronger thrust then I would take off. It appears to be a feature that keeps the motor on the low end to conserve power. Is this correct???
try playing around with the programming. before you hook the battery, turn on your tx and move the stick to full throttle.. i've uploaded the manual for you on the files tab. the *beeps* will guide you. try selecting LIPO for the esc battery. if im not mistaken, the default is Nicad.
OK, so far I understand that the BEC powers the receiver/servos and the red & black wires are for the battery but the three for the motor I have yet to figure out. The ESC output wires are mark A, B, C and the motor's wires are red, black, yellow. The question is which goes with which? Thanks for your help.
Dear mark,I'm using this esc and,I plugged it in this way.
A-red
B-Yellow
C-Black
It doesn't matter what is the correct wire, From Changing wires,We can change motor direction.
Thanks!
I love it how when you give a bad review on something, for some strange reason, IT DOESN'T SHOW UP!!!!! I've been dealing with HK a long time. But never has a packing job been so terrible as the one I just got. Everything was just thrown into one bag. No separation or bubble wrap at all. If this is the way it's going to be, I will just paying a little extra and get it from somewhere where the customers mean more than this!!!!
Algué*m poderia fazer um tutorial em ví*deo de como programar este esc..pelas pesquisas que fiz tem "" milhõ*es"" de pessoa com duvidas sobre este esc..
Hello Hobbyking,
I have a turnigy motor (Turnigy L2205-1350 Brushless Motor (100w)) connected to 18Amps Hobbyking ESC via a TX and RX(Hobby King 2.4Ghz 6Ch Tx & Rx V2 (Mode 1)),
I got a problem - when the throttle of TX is in max position the ESC enters in programming mode but does not respond when the throttle is put down to select any options. The ESC keeps continuing to complete all 8 beeps and the cycle continues.
When the throttle is kept in lowest position, ESC gives beep-beep-beep several times within very less span of time.
I connected a servo motor on same channel 3 of receiver to see if the throttle signal works, the servo motor responds to the throttle signal when moved up and down, but the ESC when connected to same channel 3 does not respond to the throttle signal.
Kindly suggest some help
My ESC doesnot enter in Programming mode, after initial 123 beeps and two beeps it remains quite and nothing on the TX works, only when I move the throttle to left-right, it beeps 15 times and then two small beeps and quites down. Can anybody please help to rectify this problem?
i was able to enter programming mode using my turnigy9x by first turning on the transmitter and moving the stick to full throttle before hooking the battery into the esc.

Got 2 of these esc's in a twin set-up. I use a Y-lead to connect and have dis-connected one of the 2 esc's centre wire as per recommendation on RCG. Problem is the one with disconnected power-lead does not work at all. When connected normal both work. Is the BEC linear or "switching"? Can ony-one recommend the correct wiring set-up? Will i damage my Rx if i leave both power-leads connected?
I have setup a tricopter and quadcopter using this ESC. On my setup I leave all the wires connected. Meaning all 4 ESC have power wire intact. The tri, quad flew fine until I get bored with it. Its a linear BEC. Apart from that you need also do throttle calibration. Good luck.
when you unpluged the center wire you cut the power to the esc the only time you do that is if you got a ubec thats exterior of the esc then it dont need the possitive wire to feed the rx
you already do ESC Callibration?
in case if not: - turn on tx with full throttle - plug in power to your esc - after beep beep - put throttle to zero and sound of beeeepp beep beep (depend on your setting lipo or nimh). and done.
Kodox... thanks for your answer its the only one solution... my lipo was discharged : ) and my channel 3 in reverse mode jeje then i do your recomends and all works fine
yes it cad do what you want, you need to pot on the atmega memory other firmware with this tool:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__271 95__Atmel_Atmega_Socket_Firmware_Flashing_Tool.html
Some of these lot Esc have a software bug where the controller on ESC leaves two gates open during brownout and it burns out when power is applied.I used them in quadcopter projects they seemed to work perfectly in one but the latest one i designed i had three burnt.
Yes,the red and the black wire on the left of the picture go to the battery, the small triple lead goes to the receiver, the 3 blue wires to the brushless motor.
Black :(-) end of the battery (Black Wire)
Red : ( ) end of the battery (Red wire)
Black-Red-White flat cable: Throttle output of the receiver.
3 blue cable: to Brushless DC motor
But did he reflash the programmable (this, HK-HW20A) or non-programmable (HK-SS20A) version? The SS is flashable, but the compatibility chart says the HW isn't...
All newer SS Series have RSTDISBL, so can't be flashed via SPI. But you can change MCU ($0.8 at ebay****) or use "Atmega fusebit doctor".
HK-HW20A have SPI pads, but need to resolder MCU.
IMHO: wii-esc is best FW for this.
BEC gives the power to the receiver and connected servos
A 9gram servo draws about 500Mahs
which means u can use about 4 servos without any problem on the same time
thank you very much, I have another question
I have 4 brushless motor, and I have 4 electronic Speed **Control.
the brushless motor is 1050 kv and cards are Hobbyking SS Series 18-20A ESC (card programmable), I need to know, what will be use battery (in mAh) and what is the amount of discharge (25C, 30C, 40C) which one?
the card is a programing card that you buy seperate of the esc that you use to program the esc functions like how many cell batt/ motor timing/rpm braking/ lipo-nmhi and stuff like such
I don't know the voltage on the a123 cells, but if its not more than 12.6 volts, it would work. This one's good for 3 cell lipo's..voltage protection may be another story..
Hello everybody !
To end the discussion about the warthox-thread where they say that hobby wing ESCs are not Quadcopter compatible anymore:
These seem to be NO Hobbywing ESCs and are not affected by the bug !
Here is the thread: (starting on page 4):
***********rcgroups****/forums/showthread.php?t= 1608239&page=5
Please rate me if you like me research.
Greetings from Germany !
I have 5 of these on order for an upcomming Quadricopter project.
I've recently read on RCG that the non-card programmable HK SS ESCs (ie, HK-SS20A)are releasing the magic smoke when connected to a quad flight controller.
I've also read from Wathox that his previously favorite ESCs (Hobbywing funfly/pentium/fentium) no longer work well. He thinks that they have recently changed from a Atmega chip to a SIL chip which may be part of the problem?
Does anyone know if these ESCs have recently changed and is it OK to connect to a Free Flight quad flight controller?
Some of these lot Esc have a software bug where the controller on ESC leaves two gates open during brownout and it burns out when power is applied.I used them in quadcopter projects they seemed to work perfectly in one but the latest one i designed i had three burnt. The answer is yes the new lot might have a changed chipset which makes them not suitable for quad or tricopter projects. Please reward if you find my answer usefull. Thanks
But why are you asking?
Warthox talked about Hobbywing ESCs .
Or are those Hobbyking ESCs the same as Hobbywing ESCs and will make problems for Quadcopters?
Hobbywing and Turnigy are made in same factory, use same programming card, etc. I was going to use these stock. But then read that n3m1s1s had been using non-card programmable HK SS 18a stock and all of a sudden the ones made after Nov 2011 started smoking. Then read Warthox's thread (he had been using HW ESCs stock) about the new ones with SIL chips not working.
So long story short, I plan to reflash these with SimonK's tgy hex firmware to take advantage of the faster refresh (PWM), no throttle averaging, less motor whine, etc.
Faisal above seems to think that there is bad stock firmware on some of these. I'm really not sure.
I guess the simplelist thing would be to try them and if they fry, send them back in and post here that they are not good for quads anymore. Sorry but I have no other info.
So to keep this very important discussion alive:
I have read that the card programmable version is not affected by the fireware bug which makes it unusable for quadcopters.
They still have the right firmware, they said.
Is that right?
I'm not really sure what firmware they have on these, if it changed or not, etc. I tried to research it and found the reflashing info so decided to go that route.
If they have good firmware, then all should be OK. Reflashing might give you better stability but many people have done well without (ie, Warthox).
Where did you find the info that these are still coming with good firmware?
Hello, undoubtedly: They/mine wont work! I'm able now to programm ESCs with a card or with TX.
But these just beeps end beeps. Cant be programed with TX & wont start Motors like the other ESCs (from a Bixler, to compare)
I tried different motors, Rxs, did the same programing prozedure as like on the Bixler ESC. But: beepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeep.
Trottle calibrating is done too. What else did i do wrong? I dont belive that they are defect.
Hello,
I have this ESC. After I connected to a new rx the ESC sounds with the initialisation melody but no 3 beeps for my 3s lipo battery. The ESC sounds every 3 seconds a short beep. Is the ESC defect?
This is not because of the new RX. Obviously you accidentally entered in programming mode (throttle stick was in the maximum position at startup) If you don't have the programming card, then look in web for how to do it manually. Sorry I can not remember how, as the long time ago im bought a card.
So don't worry, your ESC is Ok *D
Hello SkyJackeRR,
I'm not in the programming mode because my throttle stick is not in maximum position. Maybe the rx is defective.
thanks for your help.
Forgive my persistence, but I am sure that the ESC in programming mode. I had something similar.
You can connect your old receiver ? For sure)) I think will be the same.
If I connected the old rx, the esc beeps every 2 or 3 seconds. I can't programming the esc. It's only beeping.
If I connedted the new rx, everything is ok. Thanks for your help.
U need Turnigy BESC Programming Card to program this. Works will all HK SS ESC. Buy the programming card, will make your life easy and you will be buying more of this ESC
When building a quadcopter and programming the throttle range on your esc for your radio I have heard you can set all 4 esc at the same time. Is this true, or do you program throttle range 1 at a time?
Yes, you can do all at the same time. But is not the best pratice. Make separately to avoid problems.

18 thumbs up!
I have used the ESC on five flights now. It is truly amazing. The features and the price of the ESC are impressive. Seems to be well built and solid. The adjustable timing of the ESC can support a 'speed' type outrunner. I can find nothing to complain about. Very easy programming with the Turnigy card.

It is a nice controller that can be programmed with the card. But... It will not work properly on 2 LiPo's. After a good start it throttles down quickly. The problem is they used cheap 7805 voltage regulators that need at least 7 volts to work properly. On 3 cells it runs fine and cheap it is!!

10 thumbs up!
My ESC just keeps on with constant beeping. Even after using the program card. If I switch the tx on/off and then flick the throttle stick it it finally works after a number of tries. Next time I connect up I have to do this all again. My tx and rx work perfectlly on all my other ESC's
