Just watch how you take it apart. 4 Screws in bottom and horn - top comes off. Watch how the gears are assembled and put the new ones back the same way.
my HXT500 servos (12) do not have screws they snap together, and changing them is easy, remove the servo arm, use your knife to pop it apart just above the mounting ears, snap it back together when you are done, I have never had a HXT500 pop apart during abuse, I mean use.
Don't even THINK about this "project", pounding/pressing/hammering/whatever on the spline gear trashes the potentiometer underneath.
DO NOT BOTHER, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!
Anytime you press/push/pound anything onto a shaft it will usually destroy whatever the shaft is supported by whether it is you automobiles air conditioning compressor or a potentiometer for a servo. You must support the shaft from the back side and push the gears onto the shaft otherwise you will damage the hardware. If you are not equipped to do so, or do not want to spend the time to support the shaft correctly by taking the pot. apart then buying the gears will be a waste of your money.
I do not inderstand this comment. The nylon gears come off the splined pot shafts quite easilly and the new one go on equally easilly. Tvere is no need to use force.
I have replaced several without any problem. And besides: if you manage to break the servo, you have not made anything worse, since it was broken to start with.
Funny but the replacement set for HXT900 (which is larger servo) is lighter, why?
Hope you won't increase postage weight to it cause of this hahah *)

8 thumbs up!
Easy to change gears in these servos, its normally just the final gear that goes so try to keep the rest together when fitting. Spares for throwaway price servos, yearhh!!

4 thumbs up!
There appear to be only two gears likely to break in these servos, and both are in the replacement kit. I overmatch these servos to save weight and have broken five gears. Very cheap fix! Servo is kind of annoying to open though.

3 thumbs up!
Like most others I bought these as a backup. However, I found that they also fit a range of other micro servos which were in my "I'll fix that later" box. In particular, the output gear (and the rest of the drive train) from a Korean made SL110 SuperMicro 8g servo fits perfectly. The old output arm did not fit, so you might need some spare arms from the HXT500. A great way to make the gear last as long as possible. I'd guess that spares for the HXT900 probably fit other models too.
An even cheaper solution for broken gears on this cheap servo. There are no screws to be undone. The case is just snapped together and held there with stickers. Be carefull not to break the little protrusions on the servo case when pulling it apart.
Very useful after each 450 helicopter crash I had because I replaced the gears even without removing the entire servos, just opening the botton cap this keeping the servo in its original place. A suggestion for Hobby King is to sell separate units or packages of the same individual gear because it is the same gear the one that brakes again and again.
