i have the art=tech mustang p-51 38'' wingspan ...do you think this retracts would be good my mustang or they are to big,, or what kind the retracts do you suggest me to use?
 Spitfiery 7 points
you can use HK-5094 they r about 5 dolars each and easy to use you dont have mess with servos and these retracts are heavy for your warbird
mlp666  5 points - 9/30/2012

Can anyone recommend a good cheep servo for this? Thanks Mark
 Andriy 102 points
if one servo for both more than 9 g. 12,5 g 2,5 kg will be enough
 Antonio 31 points
you can buy in hobbyking the Turnigy S3101S Servo. I use that servo for the retracts.
 Vallekano 8 points
This mechanical retracts doesn't work very well sometimes. It's very hard to move. You need a servo very strong (and expensive). I used the BMS-136 Retract Servo 6.1kg / .31sec / 28g and finally I bought two Digital Servoless Retractable system (Producto ID: HKD-312) and it worked better.
UniseV  17 points - 9/13/2012

Do you think this can be mounted on my E-Flite Hurricane ?
 Andriy 102 points
Can, but they are realy strong! May be to heavy for your plane.
 UniseV 17 points
My plane :
Flying Weight : 2.1Kg / Wingspan:1400mm

What is the weight range of those retracts ?
 Spitfiery 7 points
i have these on my scracth spitfire but i can say it would be better if you go for a servoless retract system they are much easier to use
fab24  3 points - 7/2/2012

Can I use this retracts with only one servo? wich servo do you recommend?
 Aussie Roger 81 points
Yes you can. You have to use the opposing arms of the servo. A standard size servo, the HXT HX5010 or Vigor VS-2A can be used. If weight and space is a problem, a mini servo such as Turnigy TGY-9018MG servo can be used as long as the stall torque is sufficient. The TGY-9018MG has a stall torque of 2.4kg.cm

will these work on house of balsa p51 43".
 rc speed 276 points
yes
i have this on p 51
 atish 333 points
any pictures??
 Spitfiery 7 points
i have it on my balsa spitfire about 125 cm (49 inch) you can see it under videos tab.
Polardegos  54 points - 1/18/2012

Can these be turned around for spitfire/bf-109 use? With that I mean can the control lever be flipped to the other side of the housing, so you can have outwards retracting gear?
 Dannyel 11 points
somente para um lado, sendo o acionamento para dentro e para fora e nao precisa ser com servo de retratil pois o curso da alavanca é pequeno, dependendo do tamanho do seu aeromodelo ele caberá perfeitamente.
 Antonio 31 points
Yes you can reverse the mechanism. I'm using it on my spitfire with one servo.

How many servos does it need?
 rcDawson 70 points
You can use one but it is probably best to have two metal geared servos.

 Antonio 31 points
You can use one servo that travels 180º, and if you need to adjust the travel distance you can buy in hobbyking an Adjustable Retract and Door sequencer w/Display.

how would it go on a sky fun jet
 apasajadehbebas 11 points
i think its to big if you use for skyfunjet, i use it for big plane. may you use this www.link

This chassis is ideal for small aircraft with a span of up to 1m.

is it good for mentor with 52 engine size ?
 ste.26 2 points
These retracts are appropriate for models under 3 kg.
 ottod 24 points
Yes. They are good quality and I would say good up to a 9 lb. model, much more than 3kg.

MUITO FORTE, SERVE EM AVIAO 40 A 60.
 spitfire2010 640 points
These are really strong and I would have no issue on a 9lb plane. I have swapped out the originals on my planes and gone with these.
 Rotatorus 23 points
Building mainly smaller size electric powered planes, these retracts were a bit too big and heavy for my plane. Probably will be ok for your's.
Carrascal  37 points - 1/10/2011

Hi, id like to get these retracts but i dont know how to install it and how does it works. Does anybody could explain it to me? Thanks!
 bwoollia 320 points
The gear will retract when the connecting rod coming out is pulled. You need to adjust the amount the servo pulls - this is usually accomplished by adjusting the hole you connect on the servo arm.

Thats nice! Thank you guys!
 ottod 24 points
I usually cut a piece of plywood in a U shape, mount the retract and epoxy glue to wing. This is a push/pull setup so one servo in the center of the wing can actuate both retracts.
 meshy 116 points
You install them by making two holes in your wing, one for the box, and one for the wheel at the other end, with a channel for the wire between them. You then need to mount a servo so that it can push and pull on the thinner wire coming out of the box. pushing that makes the large wire rotate between the two positions shown. It will also lock the wire in the up or down position via a clever mechanism inside. this is a fairly big landing gear, suitable for maybe 2kg models. They are far too large
Bongose  78 points - 12/15/2010

what type of servo do you guys recommend for this system? regards
 bwoollia 320 points
I'm using the BMS-136MG which is available here at HK. $15 and change.
 killioughtta 426 points
Does anyone know if it can be used with 9-gram servos?
 bwoollia 320 points
A 9g servo would not have enough torque - it will likely burn out.

How do I add a wheels to this gadget? Is it required to physically bend it 90 degree, or this is not a self sufficient unit, requires additional part?
Thanks,
 bwoollia 320 points
The wire can be bent. Some people have complained that the wire is brittle and should be heated first, but my wires bent nicely.
 Andre 1 points
I bend the landing gear and installed 90 degrees to lock the wheel nuts. looks good.
I used these nuts from HK - Landing Gear Wheel Stop Set Collar 6x5.1mm

I put these retracts on my pz T-28 and they work great. They hold up very well and haven't had any problems with them.
Mustang Sally  1083 points - 4/19/2009

To bend them (without breaking) at a correct lenght:

Mark the correct position for the bend. Heat the area (best to remove the strut out of the plastic) untill it's red hot. Make your bend and shock cool in cold water. Check the position of the bend, if not satisfied, do the same procedure as before. If satisfied, heat up the bend again but NOT red hot (grey/blue is ok) and let cool down on its own.

Will these work for T-28 trojan from PZ?
Fugitive_Bill  418 points -

These are GREAT, absolute bargain, I'm shocked how good they are.

But I ALSO want to know if there is nose gear available/coming soon.
 Fugitive_Bill 418 points
Oh Let me ad, they are made of that strong nylon plastic, not that rubbish the GWS are made of. They also have plently of up/down lock 'play' to avoid servo buzz/binding.
Just one problem they ar are a little large for a ParkFlyer but the mod to fit them to your plane is worth it.
Hope that helps, and enjoy!
 __VIZ 76 points
What's a good servo to use on these if you are using it on a Parkzone Corsair?
vmshim  21 points -

Hi Sir,

Have this retract gear included 1 Nose retract & 2 Wing retract ? If NO, Pls adv where can i get the nose retract with this brand. Thanks
 Eric1180 2276 points
No there isn't a nose retract. Stop imagining thing just look at the picture.
 bwoollia 320 points
You can use a third one as a nose retract (non-steerable!) if you buy two sets, you'll have a spare.

hi all, I am just wondering what is a good retract servo for this product? I was thinking of putting these on the art tech p51 mustang is this to big? Thanks!
 lmcooper 49 points
Can this retract be modified for a spitfire? So the leg retracts outwards with the mechanism wire being pulled from the inside still?

30 thumbs up!
Good mechanics, best price
Hight ~20mm, servo travel needed ~20mm
Weight without steel wire (retract only) = 25grams. Steel wire weight 20 grams. I replase steel wire with carbon legs and have 35 grams less.

Update: the servo linkage can easily be reversed for planes having narrow way retracts, like Me109 or Spitfire. The wire can also be rotated to have the spring turned 90° (for nose wheel action or wheels retracting in engine nacelles like on the DC-3)

21 thumbs up!
- total weight 90 gms (2 @ 45 gms each)
- these would work on planes up to 5 lbs, equivalent to .40 size. (estimate not less than 2 lbs)
- as always, retracts work best/longest if you are capable of gentler landings, & on good runway surfaces, but these are designed and built to work reliably
- needs more than a micro servo to ensure that it can push past the "gear up & locked" position.
- needs 1" depth to mount flush to wing surface the 4 mounting screw holes are bevelled head for flush mounting as well!!
- mechanism has 4 screws to disassemble for inspection if required

These retracts work flawlessly, the wire truly is 3.5mm but when you bend it i would recommend to heat the wire first because it is a blit brittle. They are "Reversible" so you can disasseble them and change the way on the controlwire, that means you can still have one servo in the middle and have the retracts retract either inwards or outwards.

9 thumbs up!
25mm deep in the wing. 20mm between mounting rails.
To reverse for Spitfire. Open it up, unscrew the hammer head on the actuator shaft and fit it backwards. Fit actuator shaft facing the other way, close it up.
