Arduino HMC5883L Triple Axis Compass Magnetometer Sensor Module Breakout

Arduino HMC5883L Triple Axis Compass Magnetometer Sensor Module Breakout

This little compass module is perfect for Arduino and micro-controller projects and has “bread board” ready pin pitch, this could also be used to relocate to an external compass, on flight controllers that are having mag problems from the proximity to the electric motors. The breakout board includes the HMC5883L sensor and all filtering capacitors as shown. The power and 2-wire interface pins are all broken out to a 0.1" pitch header.

Specs:
Interface: I2C 2.16-3.6VDC

Go to copter.a r d u p i l o t DOT c o www.link there are very detailed instructions how to align the external compass and how to disable the internal compass by cutting a track on-board the APM2.5, setup details, etc.

Found the info, so if anyone want to know x axis left and y axis pointing back. By orientating it this way no adjustment to compass orientation in mission planner is needed.

please someone tell me How do I the connection apm connection scheme
 __HaKK 753 points
Go to copter.a r d u p i l o t DOT c o www.link all the connection details are there. HKPilot Mega V2.5 is the exact clone of APM2.5 so follow these specific instructions and do not forget to cut the track on your HKPilot 2.5 for disabling the internal compass.

Still much cheaper than the one sold by DIY Drones for those who want to turn their APM into an external compass version

Lol, 1. But is yours fast Ferrari Red.

Even though its the same HMC5883l . I bought 2 different versions ,one was L883 2202 and it was ****,very temperamental like my misus. The other had a L883 2106 ,smaller board and works perfect. Installed it in a puck with a ublox 6m gps and mounted it on a naz gps post. The apm2.5 loiter is as locked in as my naz-m . The effort of external mag is well worth it.

How do you use this with the 2.5 if the 2.5 already has it installed? I know the newer 2.6 has an external one but the 2.5 has not.
 rizky_p 296 points
you have to cut the trace to onboard Compass, then enable external compass on Mission planner.

Ah Ok I will look into it. Thanks for the reply.

Can this work with the pro multiwii board sold here. I have mine in a 550 naza flame wheel clone and I get wicked magnetic interference. If so how do I find out how.
 Yeswecan 240 points
Haven't used wii, extra sensors can be added using adapter boards. Huge Mwii community on rc grou p. Valkman * theres a how to in the ardupilot 2.5 wiki . Its really straight forward ,once you cut the trace, your new mag is pretty much plug and play. Do the live calibration and you're good to go. Very important to point the board the right way forward. If you get the "toilet bowl affect, turn the board a few degrees in the opposite direction (mag board ).

This is now replaced with HMC5983. I bought the newer version for half this price. For once I am happy a part is BO just when I was about to buy!

This is exactly what I needed for my 550 DJI clone, I was getting 40 degrees shift on my mag this has reduced to zero thanks to being able to move the mag away from all the electrics. As a bonus my gps seems happier, fitting was easy just had to cut trace connection from the mag and change one line on the sketch. picture in files tab of my setup.

At that price it would be nice to have a 4 pin DF13 connector cable for I2C connector included or at least sold separately for connecting to HKPilot Mega V2.5 (or APM2.5). PRODUCT ID: 074000072 is pretty much the same, but the included cable is also no good for APM2.5. You can visit copter.a r d u p i l o t DOT c o www.link there are very detailed instructions how to align the external compass and how to disable the internal compass by cutting a track on-board the APM2.5, setup details, etc.
