I just received a shipment of these that don't center well. These servos usually work great and don't get sloppy until a few crashes. Out of the 24 I ordered, so far 6 of them aren't centering properly, or have uneven travel above 50% throw.
They're cheap and they work on the swash of a 250-450 helicopter, but make sure they don't tilt the swashplate when you apply full negative or positive pitch. When they work, they're awesome. I use these servos on the swash for 5 of my helicopters.
Good observation mate mike666.
However mine came with a threaded
screw and fits nice into the servo.
They just mistook and borrowed the photo from the
HK15178 Analog Servo 10g / 1.4kg / 0.09s,
which has plastic gears.
It could be used as it is fast and strong enough.
I'm using the Corona 919MG Metal Gear Servo 1.7kg/ 12.5g/ 0.06sec on the tail and 3 of these as cyclic on my 450 heli and work perfect.
I also used these in my 450 with a DFC head - after 9 flights they were fit for the bin. There is no top bearing in them and the housing wears allowing slop to develop.
The tail on any heli works very hard and even in the short term, these are simply not up to the job.
See the answer perdification put below about his use of them ...
The only problem with these servos is that after a few crashes, instead of breaking or stripping a gear, these servos develop a lot of slop. These servos fly great in my 450 even after a few crashes. Just be sure to check your servo for free play after a crash.
Is anyone else having trouble with servo cases crumbling when you screw them down? Im going to try putting old hxt900 caps on them, they look pretty similiar.
Are they crumbling or cracking? I have a good few of these and not had any 'crumble' but I did accidentally crack the mounting lug on one when the wood platforms were out of level with each other.
Hi,
Anyone tried using these servos as a 450 DFC FBL cyclic servos? Do the gears get stripped easily after a minor crash for DFC heads? I don't mean normal FBL set ups, I mean specifically DFC, because DFC eat through all my servos extremely quickly.
Thanks.
I'am using it in 250 DFC FBL as a cyclic servo. I had many crashes but only one servo slip his gears. This servo can take many without any damage. I recomend it.
Well I managed 9 flights with a set of these on my 450 DFC with 3GX - then they went in the bin. One had a lot of slop and another had worn the top housing where the splined shaft resides. The DFC heads are hard on servos and I would not recommend these for anything but mild sport with a non-DFC head.
I've used them for a while and I'd say that there is some slop developing... Good thing is that I haven't stripped any so far with minor crashes. These servos are meant to be flown with care in a 450 DFC FBL setup. Thanks for the answer!
Careful flying with a DFC heli? What's that? lol!!! I would say unsuitable to use a DFC heli to it's full potential. DFC loves hard 3D, and these servos won't take it for any length of time. But hey - for under $4 it was worth a go!
They are however great for 'careful' heli flying and fixed wing things - lasting forever!
they work OK as cyclic servos on a 450. I have a HK 450 DFC and it went 45 flights until one of them blew a potentiator or capacitor. I could tell because the gears inside were fine.
They work really well on a 250. You can really go balls to the walls 3d on a 250 with these as cyclic servos.
Arguable,as Digital and metal gears increase the current draw significantly IF that's a concern
Also 15178 has 'claimed' Fibre reinforced (black) gears
The Corona MG servo for 1$ more is Much better tho Stronger and even has a ball bearing output
Did this item come in to stock recently i was keeping an eye on them, the stock level was -1 and now it is -7 i never got email alert to say they were in stock. Did anyone purchase this item in the last couple of days since the 20/08/2012
I have been waiting for weeks now and still no sign of restocking. This is Hobby Kings own brand and they cant keep them in stock. They need to fire their current stock controller or mybe they dont have one at all that is why they keep running out of stock. They have to be the slowest at restocking they are losing out on so much buisness due to this problem.
Nooby question:
Will these digital servos work with my brand new Hitec 24GHz optima AFHSS receiver?
I was under the impression that digital servos only worked with their own brand..
I use HK analog and digital servers with my hitec minimus and optimus 6,7,9 channel receivers and they work perfectly wouldn't be without them turnigy and corona
Metal version of the HKSCM9-6 perhaps?? Has the same dimentions so should fit in the 250 frame just as well as the HKSCM9-6 does. Grabbing a couple to try in my 250, the HKSCM9-6's gears are just to fragile. Hopefully these are more durable and don't develop gear slop fast.
smash77, this hk-15178b doesnt have much slop,so as many users comment here, its was capable to handle such a precision ccpm usage. very high grade quality in very reasonable priced.!!well done hobbyking.
HK MG-15178B Digital Servo 13.5g / 1.5kg / 0.08s, I use in my 450pro helicopters, which use the FBI, and the servo supports my fly, very safe and very good material
Estos servos los utilizo para el rotor trasero de los helicopteros 450 y la verdad que responden muy bien, por encima del torque tienen muy buena respuesta y velocidad

I got 4 of these to test on my 450.
They came in a simple Clear plastic Baggy with only 3 servo horns 2 mounting screws and one horn screw.
The servo horns are a little on the flex able side but don't break very easy.
the holes are small and you well need to make them a little bigger to mount link balls to them.
the servo has a Nice case that is fairly sturdy and wont break on a light crash
as some of the others I have tested.
There is no bearings or bushings in the top so well have to wait and see how long it well take to wear threw.
The output shaft is very short only at 2.7mm tall.
They center very well on the bench.
On the inside they are all metal gears not just the output gear so they should last a little while.
You may want to add a little hot glue to the wires to releave some of there stress because they are small.
you well also want to add a little more grease to the gears because there is not allot on them at all so the sound a little grindy in motion.
when not in motion they are steady and do not chatter at all.
The speeds I have not tested so can not say for sure but they are fairly fast.
They have a 175mm leads on them so should not have any problems using them on cyclic.
for Rating I give the 4 crowns over all because of the cheap servo horns and the short output shaft
for Value I give the a 5
for Quality of the servo it's self I give it 5
I well be putting these
