esc which I use for this turbine?
 mohd hafiz 1 points
the current draws from this motor is 18a, so any 20a esc will do.
chih seng  6 points - 4/27/2013

can i flip the rotor for a counter rotating unit?
 Bjarki 29 points
No, they are manufactured unsymmetrical for best performence, and they are glued together. but you really don´*t need to do that. with this small a Rotor diameter, it wont effect the plane at all. you only need to worry about Prop torch when you get to 8 inch and above diameter :)
camgl  5 points - 4/18/2013

seeing as though i am no engineer, by using 2 of these motors would the double the thrust?
 Bjarki 29 points
yes, you are correct. though double the amp draw :)
 Howard 8 points
Yes, but you will also need a matching ESC for the motor, since they will not both operate on one ESC.
 Bjarki 29 points
No, all things considered, you will have slightly less then dobbel the thrust because of strain on the battery, and the esc itself will eat up about 500 mah just working, but it is really not noticeable. Basics are that 2 motors with 2 esc´*s will give you about dobbel the thrust *)
Gtrain  120 points - 4/9/2013

So if I put a funfighter esc into my T-45 and use a 4s 850mah funfighter battery will this motor blow up and send glowing hot embers all over the flying field? In other words is it totally a bad idea?
 Bjarki 29 points
i have seen many comments and review saying that it burns out if you use 4 cell. after all it does say (3 cell version)
 Abhilekh 3 points
Hello Gtrain, the rumors are absolutely incorrect! It won't just blow up right in mid air. Although yes, you can't escape from the fact that it'd become hot than expected, keeping the right match of ESC, here I suggest, a 25A ESC rated at 4S will do the trick, but you are advised not to throttle to maximum for a long time. At 4S, the outburst of jet does manifold even at 70% of the throttle. Hope this helps :)

Merci.

I have just received my 50mm Alloy EDF 4800kv (3s Version). And after seing all bad reviews of this motor I decided to send it to trash bag. So bad. I will not spend my time mounting a plane with this motor!!!! It goes to trash.
 Gtrain 120 points
So you didn't even plug it in to test it out? the reviews here say it's comparable to the stock fan unit with a marginal increase in performance and a larger effect on noise. Sounds OK to me I'm still going to get one to replace my current fan
 Eivind Ola 12 points
I have one in my mini F16. Fits very good with just minor foam surgery needed. Very well balanced unit, with good thrust! I use a 30c 1050 3S Rhino. Very happy with this edf!!
 Gtrain 120 points
I'll second that. I received mine and fit to JPower T-45. Had to do a little foam thinning to fit the unit but it flies great - maybe a tough more thrust than the stock unit
roland  5 points - 2/16/2013

Hi,i bought also one as replacement for the stock edf (nano jet Mig17 robbe). the power was under the stock edf power.
i've tried two different speed contr. with different settings for the inrunner BL Motor - one was a little bit better, but the result was also not the best.
At least,i changed the inrunner Motor with the stock motor
from Robbe (4300 kv) und it works very well, enough power now...(you can hear the Motor turns much higher on 3s)
So,my suggestion is - 1) the alloy inrunner is made for 4s or 2) you need a special speed controller...
namadigan  38 points - 2/8/2013

Ibought one, very dissapointed.I built the ligest plane I could and tried cg different places . It would fly about10 meters.needs a biger motor and fan.any suggestions.????
 Goran 18 points
was the thrust really that low. I have the 4600kv version and it puts out around 320g. Try Turnigy 2610 5000kv (54g). It should give you 360g at least (with good ducting) but will draw around 23A

Thanks for your reply I am looking at a larger EDF
 Abhilekh 3 points
Hye Namadigan, it gives enough thrust ~550 grams *4S drawing upto 25A, I tested. Only thing, there's a misgiving here that 3S provide 450 grams. But it wont. At 3S setup its a max 300 grams. Please try with 2x2S 700 mAH lipo in series. Hope that helps :)
 namadigan 38 points
Thanks to all replies.I have decided to get a larger setup cheers Noel

Could some one please suggest a suitable Turnigy replacement outrunner that will fit this fan unit and provide around the advertised thrust on a 3s setup please
 Abhilekh 3 points
Hye Rebecca, why need an outrunner to fit this prop when this setup does it all? infact, unlike outrunners its smooth and has least body spin (its inrunner after all) NOTE: this fan unit is meant for inrnners. outrunners often come with a bigger unit.

This one :-) Turnigy 2815 EDF Outrunner 4000kv for 55/64mm ~$11.00

Decided to test the motor and real life results might be different. Simple DT delta ( 2 hour quick build ). Turnigy Esc. Orange RX. 2 5gram servos. EDF unit with thrust tube. Turnigy nano tech 850. Plane wieght 280 grams. Equipment alone - 181 grams. So thats under 100 grams of foam and tape. The video was at full throttle for most of it. Power was pathetic at best. Not something I want to fly with. Maybe a homemade hover craft for the grand kids. Nightstone
Nightstone  4 points - 11/26/2012

Max I could get out of this unit was 230 grams of thrust. NOT AT ALL WHAT WAS ADVERTISED. 5 Different esc's ( Yes timings were set ) and 4 Different batteries. I may be able to get up to 20% more by channeling but that's still a far cry from the 450 advertised. Not even pulling 12amps. And here it sits with 5 stars? I guess its time to start reading the fine print in all these forums before buying anything. And really hope the warnings are not being erased. Nightstone

I had the same problem, not enought power to maintain in flight a Skyangel L29 (or 39?)Albatross that weight less than 350 g. Because of this I broked the plane nose. Someone knows which motor is suitable to this fan in a 4S configuration to solve the power problem?
 gionir 33 points
Same here, 180g thrust static...I gave up and getting the plastic 5800kv version, which is lighter and much more powerful..
 boisvert 6 points
the blade that comme with this edf is normaly for hight speed... so it doesn't give a hight tork for take off or quick turn... recommand changing the blade
 Goran 18 points
That is incorrect, this blade design is very good, copying Wemotech blade desing, and is much better than the stock JPower 5-blade rotor or the 6-blade 50mm copy rotor which have straight, untapered, constant pitch blades. The motor is the problem, its too weak, I used this same rotor with a Neutron 4900kv (30g inrunner) and got much better performance, easily enough to hand launch my 375g JPower F35. However the Neutron motor has its own problems. I have to add, my F35 does fly good with the Lander motor too, can still hand launch ok, 323g peak thrust, quickly dropping to 290g.
 boisvert 6 points
i will try this set up (thx) my solution was tu put it on 4s... that solve my take off probleme... had to balance the blade because the motor was over heating a litle to mutch... it is still over heting :s but a litle less
 sfactor1 940 points
hmmm my wemo has 4 fat blades...this does not
Kilian  1 points - 9/11/2012

Is this unit able to handle 4s Lipos without damage?
 Burdo 315 points
You may be able to with some throttle management but a 4800kv motor is too hot for 4S. There is a 4S version, go for that instead....
 exo123 17 points
no 3s maximum
nooby  26 points - 8/25/2012

What's the best motor that will fit this fan and give the most trust? Something in a 3 cell range.
 Burdo 315 points
It already comes with its own motor. It has plenty of power at 4800kv.
 gionir 33 points
It does cme with a motor, but it's absolutely rubbish, don't wate your money on this unit

What should timing be set at for this motor?
 Crampy 179 points
Low timing.
 2xWhiskey 45 points
I agree, low timing due to the 2 pole motor.
warbird_11  19 points - 6/28/2012

Hi,did you made some thrust measurements? I made it yesterday while I put the model (Skyangel T-33) with build in EDF unit on a calibrated scale.Thrust was 210g, Stocksetup: 202g but the aloy EDF setup is 15g heavier :-( Lipo:1000mAh 3s 25c, stock esc (20A) Where are the indicated 450g thrust??????
 fathergoat 27 points
I have the same problem. Very weak thrust for what it's supposed to produce. I even tried different timing settings on the esc.
 S2K Matt 64 points
Same story here, I didn't measure much more thrust than stock, and the plane flies about the same, no real difference...
 Damon 7 points
I have the exact same issue. I put two of these in an MDC F-14 thinking it would fly great. I tried maidening it and there wasn't even enough power to keep it in the air :( I'm not getting any where near the advertised thrust!
 2xWhiskey 45 points
I just ran one on a test stand with no thrust tube. I got results very similar to what is described, about 410g at just above 17 Amps. I did have to balance the fan myself.
 warbird_11 19 points
*whiskey which liposize did you use? I will be confident if I have just 300g....
 2xWhiskey 45 points
This was just a test, so I used a Turnigy 2200mAh 3S rated for 25C constant discharge. I suggest trying a ground test yourself with a bigger battery.
 warbird_11 19 points
That's what I expected. I tried with a nanotech 25C-50C 2200mAh 3S on my scale. I had just 10g more thrust...So the lipo is not the problem. I hope my wattmeter will arrive this week. I will repeat the measurements. Maybe the esc is the problem!?...
 2xWhiskey 45 points
Perhaps. I used a Castle Creations ICE 50 Lite with the timing set to low.
 warbird_11 19 points
Today I tested a mystery 30A and the 1000mAh 35c zippy lipo. The result was a bit better. With the old esc I had about 14A, with the new esc I have 17A and 265g thrust. Not 410g but better as before! After my holiday I will try other settings like timing low etc and will report about the measurements.

Hi all, still new at this, just tested mine today with a 11.1 3s 2100 25c 30A esc Ran at full for 1 min. motor barely warm, esc cold, batt cold 11.56v 15.16A 177.3W Sounds about right to you guys??? Sounds real good too, no vibration at all, cery smooth running.
 warbird_11 19 points
I think everything is ok with your unit. My was also warm during a test but in flight the cooling is better. After a 4 min flight the motor was not as warm as after the test on the ground. The airflow is much better in the air which the cooling influenced positively. But to be sure I used some heatsink paste between motor and housing to have a better cooling. Sound is also very good on mine and balanced very well! I'm using the stock 20A esc of a skyangel 50mm edf jet and 1000mAh 3S 25c. Tomorro

Has anyone tried a 4s lipo on this with a 40 amp esc and 3 blade fan?...
 majik01 2655 points
I swapped out the motor for 5000 kv Outrunner using the same fan and the thrust on 3S (30C) is awesome. The stock BL heats up very quickly even on 3S and is lot smaller than the outrunner (just my opinion) which is the reason why I changed the motor. I shudder to think what a 4S would do to the stock motor.
 S2K Matt 64 points
The RPM will be too high on 4S and you will see early failure in the motor, mainly the bearings.I recommend just getting the 50mm EDF meant for the 4S batteries. 3S=42,180 RPM 4S=56,240 RPM
 NCflyer 13 points
I put one of these in a Sky Angel T33. It sounds great but could not blow the skin off a custard. So I carved out some foam up front, and ran a cylinder hone up its back end. Same outcome. Something is not right? Testing was done on 3s 1300mah Nanotech. Still staring at it wondering why?

This 50 mm EDF looks like a piece of art, runs great. I strapped one to the top of a TuffWing flying wing instead of a regular propeller set up..looks and sounds great. The body doesn't distort when secured to the plane as it is aluminum. Nice and stable, did the same thing to a 48" and 60" Zagi, with different EDF units. Excellent.

So finally received mine.:

1. Chinese 50mm are equal to european 55mm, so for any Sky Angel jets this is NOT a direct replacement, you need to brush quite lot of foam to fit the new unit.
2. Fan blades are plastic however the whole unit makes a lot less of noise as the original 50mm plastic units. It is very good balanced.

Very good impeller, well balanced, much thrust and lot of power. But one thing you must know, if you want to replace the impeller of your micro jet (like my sabre) : the rotation of THIS impeller is opposite!!! If you only replace it, you´ll get bad results!!! You must change the rotation. You also have to fit it in. But if you have made all this - you get a faster jet which sounds much better.

Just got this in the mail today. Installed in Skyangel F9F with a little foam modification. Used a hot soldering tip to slightly enlarge edf. cavity. This method works if used with care. Use hot glue to secure. Edf sounds great and seems to have more thrust as well. Have not flown due to 4o mph. winds today...

Finally tested this and the 4s alloy fan units today. First I disassembled them to check for heat transfer compound. None found. Reassembled using ceramic CPU paste. Tested using 2700mAh 3S 35-70C ThunderPower and stock 50mm F-16 30A esc.

current= 18.10A
voltage= 11.63v
power = 210.5W

Will mount in the F-16 then report back on how it flies.
