The Hobbyking Tuff Trainer is the ideal choice for the new RC pilot, a trainer needs to have certain qualities to be really good at the job it is intended for, so it is perhaps fortunate that supermodel good looks is not one of them, what it lacks in glamour, this model more than makes up for in performance, toughness, practicality & value for money.
The Tuff Trainer is exactly that, a combination of almost un-breakable EPP foam, band secured wing and carbon fibre spars means that, should the worse happen, this model will bounce and then bounce back for more. In the unlikely event that you do manage to break it, a little cyano glue and a few minutes patience will be all thats needed to have you grinning again.
The Hobbyking Tuff Trainer is Plug-and-Fly(PNF), so motor & ESC are pre-installed. Note that the prop mounts with a prop saver just in case you have a less than perfect landing. Good quality 8g servos are pre-installed and quality hardware tops of the list of essential must haves that are included with this kit. A trainer should be easy to fly; the combination of high angle of dihedral and high lift thick section wing make the Hobbyking Tuff Trainer a very stable, forgiving flyer, with excellent slow fly capability that does not lack the single most important factor.............FUN!
Maybe not too heavy, but too big. A 800 mAh battery just barely fits in the compartment, so a 1300 mAh is definitely too big, unless you modify the compartment.
I use the 1300 mah Turnigy Nano-Tech in mine. I placed the speed control in the nose behind the motor, turned the battery sideways, and placed it in the opening between the wing and the nose. CG comes out right.
I tried to leave a review but it was rejected because I'm not a "Gold Member" (whatever that is). My plane had several issues: pushrods werent well aligned and caused the servos to chatter and did not return to center. Use of The elevator and rudder controls actually warp the rear 1/3 of the airplane which makes the flying interesting. THe firewall is quite light and barely connected to the foam. I nosed the plane over on takeoff and tore the firewall loose, I don't know how it stayed on. I bult a new firewall and altered the pushrods to correct those problems. I will say the plane is tough and easily repaired but a little re_design of the pushrod attachment would make a much better plane. Save your money on this one and buy the Club TRainer instead.

Training Plane. This just what it says it is. I bought one of these for my grandson and you can't hardly tare it up. It has v shaped wing which helps it take wright off. It's easy to fly for a beginner. My grandson is 7 years old and has not had to do anything to it but fly.It gives him good stick time.I am looking at the Hobby King MX2 3D EPP in the USA warehouse .This EPP Foam is great
Has anyone had trouble with Tuff Trainer plane having no left aileron authority and too much down thrust that at full throttle puts it into a nose dive?
It says, up above, Click the video tab to see Josh and Josh put the "Tuff trainer" thru it's paces. I clicked the video tab and can find every kind of video, about various subjects but, can't find the Tuff trainer video. Where's it at??
msgt81 this is a typo or a mistake. The video is on the TUFF at the international listing. It is worth a look. Just search "Tuff Trainer". You will see 3 listing for the TUFF. The top one is the one you wont. I hope this helps.
Luis your receiver will be fine. The servos are standard and will fit. Whit the battery both are good but the 1000mAh will give you a few more minutes in the air. I hope this helps.
I don't really think that it's a good idea to upgrade this plane for more power. It's made to go slow with wings that create a lot of lift. It can't really do that great with 3D flying, but it is maneuverable enough for loops and rolls in the air. What are you looking to do with this plane? Acrobatics or fast flying? This definitely is not a good candidate for either of these options, it's simply not made for it. You can get a decent HK 260 3D plane that comes PNP or ARF (can't remember at the moment), or you could build a cheap, fast, and durable flying wing like the Bonsai or Teksumo for speed. Most fast or acrobatic planes do not use rubber bands for holding the wing on, also, because the plane takes more stress and cannot flex in midair.
I plugged my throttle into my receiver and it recognises the battery and then puts out a continued BEEP BEEP with a 2 second interval. My transmitter has a green flashing light as well. Bill
The motor on my Tuff trainer is beeping but not turning. I use a 9X radio ver 2. Am I doing something wrong. The esc is plugged into channel3. When I plug in the battery all other servos work just not the throttle. Thanks in advance for your help. George Phillips
Garydh I would have thanked you sooner however I live in the Seattle area and we have been without internet for a few days because of weather. Thanks for your reply. All is now well. Works like a champ. George Phillips
Glad you got it going, a friend of mine is looking at this product.

This (Tuff Trainer) beginner plane is really fast and well worth the money! It takes abuse with rough landings and crashes. Nothing a little CA foam safe glue can’t fix. I did mark the quality at 4 stars because the motor can be easily damaged. I wish HK would have provided a nose cone or cowl to protect the motor. To help protect the motor I used a 16 oz Gatorade bottle with a little colored duct tape and it looks like it came with the plane. I cut the top off of the bottle and placed it on the plane. The motor fits inside the top perfectly! Now only the propeller is exposed and not the motor. Thanks HK for a great product!!

This is a good little plane it fly's nice but can not handle much wind it is a beginner's plane so it does not do any aerobatics it could use some more power. The best part about this plane is that it can take a beating I have a lot of tree's around my house and chose to fly on a windy day I knew better but flew anyway I hit a tree very hard tore the nose off it was hanging on by the wires only and the wing's were torn into two pieces I thought it was shot about 15 minutes with a hot glue gun and it was like new and back in the air as long as you have some hot glue handy I think you could fix anything that happens in a wreck. It is a beginners plane but it is kind of touchy make sure you turn your controls down other wise it would be a little hard for a first timer. I would recommend hand launching this plane I did not have any luck trying to take off from the ground but my driveway is not very flat so that might have been why. I hope this help's someone

I received my Tuff Trainer from the USA warehouse in good condition. All the parts were there and all the electronics functioned right out of the box. The servos look very cheap and do not center well but after 7 flights they are still functioning. The two issues my plane had which would make it a bad choice for a beginner were that the rudder horn was installed on the wrong side of the rudder and the control rod tubes needed to be removed and re installed after some foam carving. The tubes were put in at an angle that would have caused binding and put unnecessary stress on the servos. The battery compartment is in a good place but the door is poorly designed and I have been using a velcro strap to keep it in place. With an 800mah 3s battery, the plane is still a tad tail heavy. I am able to cram a 1300mah 3s in but it's a tight fit. I traded out the stock wheels for a set that are about twice the diameter. This allows for better ground movement and easier landings. I am using a Turnigy 9X radio with er9x firmware. I have two setups programmed in, one where the ailerons are used as flaps on a pot switch and another where they function normally. I have only flown it in 3ch config with the flaps so far and as long as the wind is light, it flies quite well with RET. I hope to maiden it as a 4ch next week when the weather is better and I will update then.
Overall, I would not rec

I have now set up my tuff trainer with even larger wheels, navigation lights and ailerons. I like it much better with ailerons. It is a good way to practice coordinated turns and landings. If this were a properly set up RTF model then it might be OK for a beginner. As it is, it requires a little bit of RC knowledge to make it a good plane to fly. I plan to use mine next summer to train friends who want to learn. I will buddy box with them though as this plane has a few quirks. I have posted a video demonstrating the 9 Mode lights and showing the larger wheels.

I have written one review already. But this plane deserves another. On one flight we lost the battery (fell out and came unplugged). That was my fault. But the plane just circled in the wind and landed unharmed a half mile away in a parking lot on its wheels and there was a crowd gathered around when we found it. They said they just watched it circle around and land. I think they thought the little monkey strapped to the top (my son did that) might have flown it..... HAHA Then we went back to our field and my son soloed it for the first time ever soloing an rc plane. it was his 2nd flight EVER!!!
