The Catalina is arguably the most famous flying boat ever built and certainly one of the most widely used, this aviation icon saw service pre and post WW2 both with the military and civilian operators. This amazing aeroplane was used for firefighting, hunting U-Boats, Air Sea Rescue, the list goes on and on.
This is a great size Plug N Fly model with a very low wing loading that can be flown off water or off grass, it is very easy to fly and it won't break the bank! Being Plug N Fly, it comes with 4 x 9g servo's and 2 x powerful brushless motors & ESC's, it also comes with all extension leads, y-leads and even a parallel loom for connecting the ESC's to a single lipoly. For flying off water, there is a water rudder and wing floats, simply remove to fly off grass!
Removing the magnetic canopy reveals a large ply plate for mounting all your RC gear and lipoly to keep them away from any possible water ingress, the huge amount of canopy room also allows for a wide choice of lipoly capacities, from as little as 1000mAh right up to 2200mAh 3s. This is a fantastic value for money seaplane that will give hours of fun at either the flying field or flying off water, if you have never tried flying boats before, this is the one for you!

I bought a pby from hobbyking last year. I liked the way it flew. took it to Shasta Lake in North California & put a small bic lighter sized camera on board. very aerobatic, lots of fun in three days had about 15 flights. I posted some video on youtube under "simiflyer"....good luck
i was thinking about getting one of these for fpv has anybody tried this with this plane yet.. had one of the older versions a while back with the brushed motors on it..
What are people gettin for their flying weight? Is the hk weight accurate? Also, does anyone know the actually power the motors are producing in watts? I'll award credit for the best response.
Odd. I posted a reply to Sloperdude but didn't show up... Anyways, planes flies scale great. Some adverse yaw - needs rudder, gets wind-buffeted a bit. Easy takeoff from grass/ice/snow. Handlaunch OK for me holding it on fuse bottom of TE.
You replied in the reviews, that's why it didn't show up here.
Thanks for the comments. I'm a bit leery of buying an EPS plane because of how badly they can break in a crash, though I suppose I could always cover it with clear tape to toughen it up. Looks like this one may be a little light, as I'm looking for something that can handle a windy day on the frozen lake well., but I like the idea of a flying boat for snow flying.
I have this plane and it's epo, or epp. If you push your fingernail gently in the foam, epp/epo will give, buy styrofoam will cut. I have a styrofoam plane aswell and compared them. So that is odd. Mine is somewhat brittle for epo, but since I glassed it, it is bulletproof.

You get a big plane for your money, but not the best quaility. You can do some simple modifications to this plane to make it bulletproof. You can fiberglass the bottom with 1oz cloth at the least, or fiberglass the whole plane. Then you can paint, change struts, etc to your hearts content.(btw the wing struts that comes on the plane are just flimsy pushrods with a clevis on the end). For the price, I think it is worth it, and if you are willing to do some small mods you will have a very stout plane with great air and water presence

OK here is the problems with my plane. (1) The Y cable for the ailerons was to short. I fix that with a spare longer Y cable I had. (2)The cables from the motor to the controller were so short they required the motor controller to be taped under under the wind. I built extension so the motor controller are now in the fuselage.(3) Now on final assembly the motor controller failed. I switched then out with know good controller and the motors worked perfectly. I tried the controller that came with the plane on know good motors and the known good motors would not start. I will get the plane in the air in the next couple of months but with a completely new electrical system.

The kit came double boxed with no damage, 2 sets of propellers. The instructions are almost worthless, but the build threads are great.
Maiden flight: i took the plane to my test field and it flew a tight flipping circle and fell to the ground. I was sad and about to use it for decor for my lake house when I realized, this kit DOES have counter rotating propellers!!! Gee, that made a difference.
Maiden flight #2: i took the plane to lake lure, set it in the water, hit the gas, and it took off magestically. It flew almost perfectly with little trimming, but was a tad tail heavy with the cg as indicated. On flights 2 and 3, I moved the batery about a half inch forward and it was unbelievable, and landings were impossible to describe.
Flight 4: i wanted to show someone the plane, and the water was a little tiny bit choppy. I smacked the belly on take off and it flew erraticly, turns out the bottom of the hull smashed that easily. So DO FIBERGLASS THE bottom, which i am about to do, with epoxy paint and thin fiberglass. Greeat plane, no shortage of power at all, but brittle foam.

Getting back into R/C after a long absence, I was pleasantly surprised by this plane. A good value, I found the construction was a bit complex. I had to hot wire a groove in the bottom of the wing to fit the myriad of heavy-gauge wires running to the motors and aileron servos.
Fitting all the wires into the pylon and thence to the wing was a challenge. I went with 3-bladed props for scale effect and modified cap nuts in place of the ugly rubber spinners to look more realistic. An attempt to use lightweight glass mat with water-based Urethane on the hull was an abysmal failure, I would use epoxy resin instead.
The water rudder does not touch the water in a power-off configuration.
But - enough bad, let's get to the good! She flies wonderfully. Really! More power than needed on takeoff, she flies at 1/2 throttle realistically. Loops? No prob. A slightly low pass revealed it will do a nice touch and go at cruise speed. It steers fine on air rudder alone.
I can't wait to go fly again.
