do you noticed this is OBSOLETE product. "This product is no longer available and has been replaced by a newer product." (ID: 381000147) May be new one will be more compatible with Win7? To tell the truth doubt so, because I beleive this is Win7 usb controller problem, because this usb "unknown device" is more common problem then just with this USBASP.

SeungYong, what was the purpose to copy my post just below?

hahahaha SeungYong thats copy write and thats ilegal

why is it that you need to be a computer programmer to use this "simple" device? its pathetic that there is a known problem here and hobbyking refuses to acknowledge or correct the problem.

Just ckeck have you KB2528984 - "Functionality issues on USB devices that are connected to a Windows 7-based computer that has an Intel platform" installed ? (Google for KB2528984 and go tho first result)

I have this device and Windows 7 x64 bit. After installing the drivers from the files section it works great.
 v_max 404 points
I beleive this is Win7 hardware problem. KB2528984 fixes issues with USB controller on intel chipsets. Ones who not update Win7 regulary may have the issue. And this issue may not appear on other chipsets.

 chuck parker 4 points
The battery removal I understand. Where do I change m128
 chuck parker 4 points
Bingo, took me a little while to find m128. But I finally found it under the prefrences tab. Changed it and removed the battery and it worked great. David thanks for your speedy reply.
 Ian 4 points
What is this all about?
 DigDug 60 points
Ian it's about upgrading the firmware on the 9x radio to ER9x or another firmware using the USBasp programmer.

what is m128 chip that new radios 9XR carry that chip, if you have a chip with m64 put it on the chip, the battery is because it is the method to follow, select USB port, put the chip that corresponds to radio and disconnect the battery to read or write. I hope help.
 DigDug 60 points
These specific programmers all suffer with the SCK error. You can fix it if you have another AVR programmer but most people wont have two. See openrcforums . com / forum / viewtopic.php? f=10&t=1363 (remove the spaces)

Thank you. Error during writing flash. i am trying to grade the firm ware on KK2 and hobby king ESC but both give same error. i think it may be a bug in the old firm ware on usbasp.
 DAVID. 25 points
start the macbook in windows or through a virtual machine and installs the drivers and other and try again. the problem may be mac drivers you have installed or misconfiguration usbasp port.
 Paul 1 points
you can not install win xp on to osx lion, so it will cost me £*60 to put W7 on to my macbook.people having problems on w7. at this rate i'll have to buy an old xp computer to run a £*4 usbasp.
 Paul 1 points
i have done it!! all usbasp working now, sorted by using a macbook pro running 10.6.5. usbasp DO NOT WORK with 10.7 and above. i found info in cyber space about people having trouble with 10.7. so KK2.0 now running v1.4 and 30a blue esu flashed with simonk. ready for test flight but its raining :(

Hi v_max all your suggestion is based on this result that is "Win7 knows this Product is USBasp" but MY and Ian case is not.. Win7(32/64bit) couldn't get any information from board(usbASP).. so I keep suspecting this product.. Win7 just recognize this product "unknown device" and this is not Win7's problem.. and "Hobby king" must notify this product's driver problem in Win7 cleary!!
 v_max 404 points
Just pluged my one in another computer with WinXP. And installed drivers manually (downloaded from files tab). No problems 5 minutes for all. And it work.. not Win7 problem? read the forums.. Just google for "usbasp windows 7 unknown device" May be check this USBASP with other computer?

this is what happens every time i try to install http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYL-yJlOhqY
 chinkman_37 1 points
first what you are going to want to do is delete the old driver, then Go to the files tab on the item's page, download the usbasp 86x /64x drivers, install them, and do not plug in your programmer until the driver is finished installing. It should work after that
 Ian 4 points
how do you install them? i "extracted" the files but thats about all you can do with them...?
 chinkman_37 1 points
In that case, you would plug in the programmer, go to device manager, right click on the unknown device, and select update driver. When it asks you, wether to look online for a driver automatically or manually choose driver, you want to manually choose driver and direct it to the folder you extracted those files to.
 Ian 4 points
that is what i have tried 100 times and it DOES NOT WORK. did you watch the video i posted?? if you did than you can see that this is exactly what i did. as long as windows sees it as an unknown device it WILL NOT work. there is more to this problem than installing a simple driver
 chinkman_37 1 points
The only other thing I could think of is trying to install driver in compatibility mode for windows xp . If that doesn't do it, I'm sorry bud, I tried.
 DigDug 60 points
There is only one driver package that works and that package is from Protostack. Search Google for usbasp windows 7 x64 and you will see Protostack is first on the page. I did watch your video. With that package you should get an additional screen after selecting the driver, asking whether or not to use the driver because it's only partially signed by Microsoft. Select Yes. I went through the same Ian, this did work for me.
Moonsun  31 points - 5/12/2013

I think this product seems inferior goods.. or just Too hard install driver .. TT Don't sell this to anyone!!
 v_max 404 points
Moonsun, there is absolutely no problems with WinXP and Linux, but I see that Win7 users experience problems. (You are not alone) May be better ask Microsoft not to sell Win7 ?
 v_max 404 points
Google for "how to install the device drivers for USBasp programmer for Windows 7 or Vista" Go to first result. Step by step installation instructions for Win7
 Ian 4 points
those step by step instructions dont change a thing, exact same results. im convinced that this will not work with my computer. gonna sell it on rc groups, although it was only $5 so i may get more satisfaction by smashing it to pieces with a baseball bat
Ian  4 points - 5/12/2013

i follow the directions exactly and it always says the "best driver software for your device is already installed" this thing is a piece of **** with extremely ****py support
Ian  4 points - 5/12/2013

i continue to try and install the driver for this with no success, i do not recommend this product to anyone. everytime i open "device and printers" it shows up and an "unknown device" under the "unspecified" heading. i thought if i downloaded the driver and went ahead with installation that it would correct itself. i tried extracting the files or whatever and then installing them exactly as every instructional video shows. i have now been trying to get this to work for 2 hours with no luck. im about to ditch this kk2.0 and buy a quality fc with actual instructions and tech support. if i cant resolve this shortly then thats exactly what i will be doing.

yes its normal. You have to assign the drivers and dont let win deside for you
 Nikolaos 618 points
google "fischl usbasp" to download drivers for it
 Nikolaos 618 points

Yes.. I tried.. but Windows7 couldn't find appropriate driver..
 NewToHobbyKing 6342 points
Moonsun so it does go looking for them. Tell it not to look. Tell your computer you will specify where the drivers are. (Unzip the driver and take note where they go). Then tell your computer to look there for the DRIVERS!
Moonsun  31 points - 5/11/2013

of course I tried Win7(32bit) and Win7(64bit) and I know how to install driver and i read user guide below Files tab..
 NewToHobbyKing 6342 points
Sorry so what happens when you delete the unknown device and tell the computer to find hardware changes?
 NewToHobbyKing 6342 points
So there seem to be two drivers under the Purple File Tab. 112952909X573206X32.zip. Are they both the same?
 Nikolaos 618 points
When you install a hardware or plug in a new device Windows 7 / Vista automatically selects the best driver. When you get a file for your device that includes a driver with more features and a software too. If you don’*t know how to update your device or hardware driver, then here is the easy way to do it. Go to Start and right-click on Computers and select Manage. This will bring the Computer Management window, now on the left sidebar select Device Manager. simply select the device who’*s driver you want to update. Finally click Update Driver Software. Once you are done. It will open a windows like Update Driver Software. You have two options here, if you want to install a driver that came with your device or hardware, then select Browse my computer for driver software. You browse and you select the file that you downloaded. once it’*s done simply click Next it will start installing the driver manual. This is a problem of assign the "best driver" for win7. I hope it will help you. Best answer maybe its not a solution but sure its a thanks

I was thinking of buying one of these devices to reflash my 9x, but I've read that people have had problems because of a 200 ohm resistor that has been used on some boards. Does anyone know if this has been resolved or if there's a way around this problem? Thanks.
 FaHrStUhL 124 points
i received mine yesterday. within 3 minutes i had it running under Win8 and had succesfully flashed my KK board.
 Nikolaos 618 points
Yes it is resolved with the new series
 eddfoo 355 points
The usbasp from HK never had the 200ohm problem, its doesn't exist in the HK unit. Bought 3 of these at different times, all worked perfectly.

Hey guys, does anyone know where one could download winXP drivers for this USBasp adapter. I have tried with somewhat confused results. Also does any one know anything about a reported trojan at the KKmulticopter flashtool site? I have already killed three computers so far this year! And not from going to what would seem at the outset to be risky web addresses.
 v_max 404 points
For driver check files tab (purle one) under product desctiption.
 v_max 404 points
As for trojan... you can easy get one when you download soft from fileshares, get it from kkmulticopter site (linked to lazyzero site).. If you wanna to be sure and do not have antivirus on computer to check then you can get free email account on yahoo mail and email downloaded zip to this email address. Then login and check attachment.. Yahoo scans all emails for vireses and trojans included in attachets even in zip archives.

Thats for sure, I went thru them all. Waiting to hear back from fischl.de >> re: their USBasp win driver zip, of which there is but one.  NewToHobbyKing 6342 points
Ivan some time you need to click a few times, some times you need to go back, out of the listing and come back in. So try the Purple File Tab once more. Try a double click if a single does not work!

go to ww w. fischl . de without the spaces of course. there you'll find anything you need

I have verified all cable connections, reinstalled usbasp drivers and keep getting the message below. Any suggestions? avrdude.exe: set SCK frequency to 93750 Hz avrdude.exe: warning: cannot set sck period. please check for usbasp firmware update. avrdude.exe: error: programm enable: target doesn't answer. 1 avrdude.exe: initialization failed, rc=-1
 eddfoo 355 points
Sck freq error can be ignored, Target doesn't answer usually means there is a connection error to the MCU. Check your connection from usbasp to the target MCU, What type of connection are you using and what are trying to program?
 Paul 1 points
i am getting Flash the firmware from repository. Flashing firmware from file.: www.link Flash www.link -C /Applications/kkMulticopter Flash www.link -p m324pa -P usb -c usbasp -B 8 -e -U www.link avrdude: set SCK frequency to 93750 Hz avrdude: warning: cannot set sck period. please check for usbasp firmware update. avrdude: error: usbasp_transmit: usb_control_msg(DeviceRequestTO): unknown error avrdude: error: programm enable: target doesn't answer. 0 avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1 Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override this check. avrdude done. Thank you. Error during writing flash. i have checked all connections, all seems ok what does -F mean? is this an override?
 eddfoo 355 points
This is quoted from the Avrdude Manual: "Normally, AVRDUDE tries to verify that the device signature read from the part is reasonable before continuing. Since it can happen from time to time that a device has a broken (erased or overwritten) device signature but is otherwise operating normally, this options is provided to override the check."
 eddfoo 355 points
In your case, I would check the connections to the MCU first.
 Paul 1 points
hi everyone, i have checked cable and connections all ok, i have used 2 x servo leads and connected direct from usb to mcu, the result is the same. same error message. so cable is not the fault. 1:- faulty usb or 2:- faulty KK2.0. any advise?
 eddfoo 355 points
Note: Some laptop or note book usb may not be able to supply enough current to run the programming. Use a desktop. When programming, disconnect Rx and Esc from the Kk2. Why use servo leads? The usbasp comes with the 10 10 6 ribbon cable, use those instead and make sure it is connected the right way.
 Paul 1 points
hi eddfoo, i tried servo leads to eliminate to new 10 10 6 being faulty. i did disconnect all leads from the kk2 when i was trying to flash it. i am using a macbook pro i5, the little green led lights up on the usbasp and flashes when it trys to flash. "use -F to override this check" i understand that this is a command to override this check, i just don't understand "-F" ,i have tried F key, tried -F, fn F,ctrl F,alt F and cmd F and nothing seems to work! thanks for your advise. could i remove jumper on usbasp to remove supplied voltage from usb port and use power from M1 to power the board? really wanting to put V1.4 firmware to improve self level as i going to try fpv soon. regardes :)
 yosac 1 points
I have the same issue. Already verified all cable connections as per diagrams. All seems to be ok. The Multi-Rotor Control Board V3.0 flashes the read led once I run the command. All other simptoms as decribed by above Paul..I have already tried to powerup via ESC removing the jumper from usbasp but its the same..
 eddfoo 355 points
Basically both of you have a non unansering MCU, Check the 10 Pin(usbasp) and 6 Pin(KK2) ISP headers, I have attached a photo of the Headers connection, make sure you have it right. If all correct, check for bad soldering around the header area, resolder if necessary. Check for connectivity from header to the MCU ( have to lift the LCD for that) with a multimeter. If above fails check if you can programme your ESC with the usbasp. BTW what programme are U using to Flash? IF KKmultiflashtool, check if you have chosen the right Board in the device selection. target=_blank>ISP Header
 Paul 1 points
hi eddfoo, i have the www.link programming tool on order, to flash my ESC so will try when it comes. i am using KKmultiflash tool, correct settings for usbasp and KK2.0 board. the board powers up when connected to usbasp,so i know power getting to it. the other MISO,MOSI,RST,SCK i do not understand how to test these inputs. going to order another usbasp and KK2.0 as something is wrong somewhere! it should be easy to flash a KK2.0 when all set correctly.i need to put V1.5 as i have now got camera on order.
 Paul 1 points
tried flash tool on hobby king 30amp blue ESC and got the same error message as before. my mac is telling me that it is an unknown device which is what the KKflashtool is saying too. i am thinking that the usbasp has no firmware on it. any ideas welcome
 eddfoo 355 points
maybe you have a bad usbasp, Never have this problem before with the 2 usbasp I have. If you have another usbasp you can reprogramme the FW for the usbasp.
 Paul 1 points
thanks eddfoo, have ordered another usbasp so i can flash the firmware on to the 1st usbasp. hope i end up with 2 working USBASP :)

A simple question, I would like to use this for All in one pro, how can I do this? Thanks for your comments.
 v_max 404 points
You do not really need it for AIOP. AIOP perfectly reflashed with build-in USB bootloader via micro USB connector. But if you want update bootloader then you will need USBASP and connect it to 6 pads marked as SPI. Or solder pins header to this 6 SPI pads and used bundled programming cable
 IBeHoey 388 points
If you're asking this question, I assume you have a broken micro USB connector? In theory, all you would need to do is just plug up this programmer to the 6pin ISCP header that's on the board. I say in theory because I have gotten mixed results using this method. I believe the header is primarily there to re-flash the bootloader on the ATMEGA chip and not so much for reflashing firmware. If you haven't already bought this programmer for that purpose, then I'd recommend picking up a USB/FTDI dongle instead as it's really easy to flash that board via FTDI than it is using the ISCP. If someone reading this has in fact been able to re-flash the firmware on that board via ISCP, please chime in. I'd really like to know how to do it as well. :D

Easy, with Arduino, tools->select programmator->usbasp, then tools-> flush bootloader

Thanks for your comments, IBeHoey. I did it! I reflashed HK AIOP with this programmer and install on it the bootloader and now is working fine. But, I have a question, will be possible connect this programmer to NEO 6M GPS and Bluetooht for configuration? Thanks for your comments and take your credit!

I am only guessing that mixed results for re-flashing the firmware using SPI header were because the compiled sketch size exceeded AVR ISP chip(s) with 64K of flash (or less).

HK do not allow to post direct links, so... Search google for "openpilot wiki flashing instructions" Go to First result. Additional usefull info is under link "Comprehensive writeup of the ESC firmware including flashing & testing information" at the bottom of first page

So I am talking Electric Speed Controls. Can you list one. Just one that HobbyKig sell that can be reprogrammed by this tool?

Google for "RapidESC Database" There is a whole list of escapes by manufacturer, which can be reflashed, including HK products. So you are welcome to choose one you need (by amps and volts)

I've used three different models of usbasp programmers and this type is the best. Compatible with eepe used to programm firmware into turnigy 9x.

Great for flashing Turnigy 9x TX with ER9x (16 models, up to 16 channels, very flexible mixing) or other firmware. For backing up or programming 9x models. Also, for flashing the HK quadcopter board (both, v1 and v2)

I ordered two devices for programming my TGY9x transmitter and the AtMegas of my other atmel projects. Function is OK, 2 flat cables are supplied (6 pin and 10 pins headers, 1 with combined headers, good idea / flexible solution!). One USBASP came with misplaced USB connector, required resoldering. Anyway - it can be used for every atmel project and its really worth the money, Henning

All I can say is WOW! I built a quadrocopter with the Hobby King Control Board (not the V2) and it flew pretty good but constantly had to stay on top of it. I bought this USBasp AVR Programming Device, followed the links to the KK site, and downloaded the latest firmware for the board. I didn't really expect much, but again I say WOW! My Quadrocopter now flies as stable as a Co-axial heli. I will be shooting video soon to show the results. If you have this control board, get the above cable and flash it with the latest firmware. You will not be disappointed.
