HobbyKing EPO Seaplane - 1090mm (PNF) (USA Warehouse)

A mini Seaplane with big performance! This little seaplane took us by surprise here at HobbyKing. Once out at the test field, the transmitter was soon being passed around because everyone wanted a go! The 1200kv motor provides spirited performance and more than enough power to rise of the water with ease! In fact the only thing more entertaining than taking of was landing again! its addictive! The rear steering paddle also makes navigating the water a breeze.

Once in the air the HobbyKing Seaplane proved to be quite a show of, aerobatics and loops were no problem at all! Optional landing gear has also been included incase you dont have access to a lake or river.

All you will require to complete this model is an 11.1v 3S 1300mAh  lipoly battery and your own transmitter and receiver to get the Icon air worthy and ship shape in around 30 minutes.

Has anyone tried adding some washout to help with the tip stall?
Maxum  10 points - 1/11/2013

On the pictures there is à* 2*10amp ESC ???? cannot find it as spare parts is it a 10 amp.constant ?
 CrashAce 797 points
No, it is a 20 amp. I guess the idea behind the label is 2x10=20. I was confused at first too. I took the heat shrink off mine, then used epoxy around the edge of the heat sink and around all the wire for water proofing. Worked ok but made it a lot heaver. (additional weight is not good for this plane)
 tommy2toes 2086 points
it needs to be lighter make sure you have weight of lipo forward cg. handels terrible i have one i wont fly it anymore it is just bad design for the capabillity so that said if you get it be sure to get the new bix 2 motor mount to raise the new 450 motor then get a bigger two blad prop 8/6 or 9/5 then it will take off from grass. needs speed to stay up and tips stalls really bad the cg must be perfect to overcome some of this i moved lipo forward but you can only go so far and then it begins to not handel the other way. so i added another wing then it flew perfectly so it really is lacking lift you must increase speed to compansate so you need the 450 and prop im on to bigger fish, lol

Can you order this item without stickers and/or electronics?
 CrashAce 797 points
No, it's only available as a PnF. The decals come off easy and clean.
tommy2toes  2086 points - 12/30/2012

this plane scts as if it needs the wing tips bent upward and it also needs a bigger wing to provide lift easyier. also needs wing floats!
 CrashAce 797 points
I agree. I used a hair drier to heat the wing right where the allerion and flaps meet then bent the tips up slightly to add a little dihedral. I also moved the CG up 5mm in front of the wing spar and doubled the size of the elevator to help keep the nose up. She flies much more stable now but with the CG so far forward taking off from water is not easy. (I hand launch now)

new info guys fpv does not work on this plane not enough lift really dosent carry weight well ao at all and way too much tip stall. i bought this but now i know for sure and im sorry to say i do not recomend this for fpv. however if you like edge of your seat focas or crash its alot of fun. definitly not a hands off plane wich is what it should be to be fpv. am i right or?
 Sean 9 points
You are commenting on how it flew since you tried it out for FPV. Why would you ask if you are right? Of course you are right, you answered your own question. ** Then again, if it has a high tip stall, I would push more weight in to the nose. This thing will not fly a gopro. but it should take a smaller 1/3 ccd camera and a transmitter no problem, as long as you have a good CG location (slightly forward).

i only have a small one. i tryed to mve the weight forward but that is worse thers no room for to much adjustment and it flys poorly even without a load . am i right was to see if anyone else found a way to improve it but its too late i tore it apart to use the components for another plane. when i added a lower wing to make it a biplane then it flew great but everyone said it was a frankinstein plane so basically i would not recomend this plane to anyone for anykind of flying sorry hk.
ScottAdamson  1 points - 7/27/2012

I see a possible flap modification on those wings, anyone attempted it?
 CrashAce 797 points
I put flaps on mine. I use crow for landing, it help prevent tip stalling at low speed. you have to cutout the servo slots and provide your own hardware but it was not difficult and defiantly worth it.
 tommy2toes 2086 points
i did but i dont like them it relly took away overall proformance and it has sush a high stall rate i dont recomend it also take off the wheels to lose even more weight that will improve flying carictaristics
Garth  3 points - 7/16/2012

Is this a good beginner plane?
 CrashAce 797 points
Defiantly not a good beginner plane. Even though it is a high wing. This model has a bad tendency to tip-stall and water take-offs are extremely difficult.
 tommy2toes 2086 points
no garth you need somthing like a cub or trainer.this is certinly not a trainer.
 Maxum 10 points
I agree with CrashAce.The motor has more power than needed.
Very disapointed, I bought it as a scale plane so i intended to fly it in a scale manner. Impossible to fly it at slow speed without stalling. Impossible to get the right GC, a forward GC for flying reduce the stalling aptitude but you won't take off from the water. Backward easy take off but you 'll have to fly it at high speed with expo on elevator.
Definitly not for beginners

Why does it come with a balloon?
 arthur 10 points
You can put your electronics in it to protect from water damage
 tommy2toes 2086 points
the ballon is to wrap your esc this will keep you running in the water. thumbs up if this helps. hope your up flying soon, tommy

does anyone know a good plane for a lake apart from this one
 Wettfeat 53 points
Specifically for FPV? If not you should try the Hobbyzone Super Cub w/ Floats. I have it and it's a great airplane. Start off as a trainer then you can easily mod it to have ailerons, better motor, etc...

**********s**** The New Dynam PBY Catalina 4 Ch 1470mm Brushless Motor/ESC ARF $119.00 VERY SWEET. Buy the upgrade kit for the elevator from Greysonhobby**** and fly it like you stold it
 FRENCHSTAN 46 points
WETTFEET: I may have missed something, but I don't understand the reference to FPV. IMO this airframe is too small and light-weight to add any extra equipment, such as First Person View. I've found it flys fine with the stock ESC, motor and prop. It lifts off from short-to-med grass with no wheels, too. But FPV?
 Harold H 65 points
celine you might try pby 5a i have 1 flys like a sailplane harold h
 CrashAce 797 points
I have this Icon. If I was going to do it over again I would get the Catalina - PRODUCT ID: CATA607-PNP. Frenchstan - you're right. no way this bird can take any extra weight. I think it was listed as FPV simply because it's a wing mounted pusher. (and maybe because the canopy looks big)
 tommy2toes 2086 points
the bigger hobbyking amphibian is absolutly the best for the fpv waterplane job.
cbots99  4 points - 2/3/2012

anyone know if you can run a 11.1v 3s 2200 in this gem ?
 Celine 5 points
yes but will increase weight
 waterlogged 2464 points
I honestly think any battery put in a plane will increase it's weight or am I wrong?
 nitro blast 5 points
Wow waterlogged, you get all your 500 posts with comments like that? Genius.
 CrashAce 797 points
this plane already has high wing loading. and I doubt you could get it to balance. I use the recommended 1300mHz mounted all the way back and have a hard time taking off from water.
 tommy2toes 2086 points
cbots99 the answer is no.it really wont. handling goes out the window theres not enough lift to thrust at that weight sorry guys. i tryed
Sam77  8 points - 1/24/2012

What's the scoop on spare props? The provided three blade looks a bit flimsy? Any APC replacement options?
 CrashAce 797 points
I bought some spare props here somewhere but haven't need to replace them. Even with two tree landings and a nose dive into the water at full power my original prop is still intact!

HOw does the power feel with the supplied motor?? Thanks.
 tommy2toes 2086 points
really nice it wont 3d but great verticle awsome power so much that the esc supplied is too small wont handle that much i put on a hobbyking 25 amp esc and was flying great.
 scott 6 points
This plane has tremendous power. easily lifts off cement grass, and water, with all stock parts
 CrashAce 797 points
I wish mine had as much power as you report your to.

As usual no instructions. Nice little plane. CG location? Any other suggestions?
 banjo742 27 points
From the experience I have had with these smaller models, I have discovered that the C.G. is usually somewhere around the 2.25 mark. Least ways the smaller ones I had with no directions flew pretty good with that setting, at any rate, its a place to start. Hope this www.link
 tommy2toes 2086 points
as always if you look next to the videos there is a file button click it and you will see manual click it there is very detailed instructions find the seaplne scroll down past buy it now and you will see. as for the cg he is right 2.25mark. from the leading edge of the wing. or place the recomend battery up aganst the servos and shove all other electronics back in the pocket as far as you can that gave mine perfect cg balnce i cant wait to fly again.
 banjo742 27 points
I have been thinking about buying one of these little planes for flying around in the back here, I got six acres, have you flown yours yet, and what do you think of the model and its power train, could I put a 300 watt 28mm motor in it? That particular motor is rated for a 3 cell. banjo742

Just bought mine, will let you know when it comes.
IndiaHobby  43 points - 9/8/2011

Has anyone purchased this plane? If so, please tell me about its speed (slow-fly) or advanced fast?
 tommy2toes 2086 points
just tryed it and i had the cg too far forward you need to shove all electrnics into the back as far as possible. and the battery needs to sit sideways tight to the servos that balances the plane pefectly. also mine had a bad esc or acually think its too small that motor, but the motor power and speed is awsome stick a 25amp esc on to replace the 20 amp it comes with it was a rocket. going to fly soon again bad weater has been stoping me hope it clears its going to be great in the soft snow!!! going to see how slow i can fly this time iwill let you all know.

Hi fellas! I'm diego from Italy. I had my first icon : 1300Kv Aeolian 250W motor with 7x5 APC prop and had lot of fun for more than a year, I used it really hard on water, and stunts :) at least it find death for excessive usage! Now I got a new one here from HobbyKing. This is my latest setup: Emax CF2812 Outrunner 1600Kv (powerful and fast!) with 7x5 APC and the planse goes BOOM! take off form water in a bounch of centimeters....this power is enough! or too much? :) better have more power and control it than have undepowered plane...of course. The Emax motor motor is really cheap and you can find it on the net everywhere. Antoher thing: Longer the motor wires for easy esc wiring and easy esc change in case of fried! I KNOW to connect motors to esc with short wires provided form factory IS CRAZY AND ANNOYING! take it easy to everyone and sorry for my horrible english! Bye and ....don't forget to apply spray grease or spray vaseline on eny metallic part on the plane! I sprayed with grease the servo wings!
 FRENCHSTAN 46 points
About the CG, I had good balance mounting the recommended battery ON TOP OF the 2 servos, and I just trimmed the foam of the canopy a bit so the battery fits and is held in place by the canopy.

Alright, so you get this plane, here is what you do: 1 - Replace the power system with the microjet v3 from GraysonHobby.com 2 - Make sure your running a 6x4 on this power system with a 3-cell 3 - Throw away the landing gear and remove the nose gear assembly (rip it out) This will save weight and give your rudder more motion. 4 - Pull the 9g servos out of the cockpit and put them on the flaps, put 2 MG servos in the cockpit for rudder and elevator. 5 - Use scrap foam to extend the elevator length by 1/4" 6 - Use your radio to setup the flaps. 7 - Extra credit, setup the ailerons to rise when the flaps go down, this helps with the tip stalling and acts as airbrakes. NOW you've got a fun model. Before this, it's crap. Keep your speed up and the angle of attack down, it likes to tip stall into trees.

Got this plane from the use warehouse in 4 days shipped to nevada. from building the kit the quality of the parts is great, i followed other reviewers recommendations on adding flaps, bigger esc and changing the nose gear. Out of the box one of the 5g servos was bad in the wing so i replaced both with 9g and used the good 5g for the nose wheel steering. First flight was great, cg is a bit off from the instructions online (2 cm foreword) All an all a great plane for the price. Plenty of power with stock motor (put the prop on the right way, shiny toward the front. Super pleased, good job HK

Not a very good flying plane (IMHO). It's a bear to land smooth and the servos don't center well. I replaced the aileron servos with HXT900's and that helped with the flying smoother but it's still difficult to land. Haven't tried it on water yet, I'm almost afraid to fly it over water. I'll be selling mine soon.
