I'm new to all this (RC), and looking for my first transmitter for my first quad. What's the difference between a mode 2 and a mode 1 version of the 9x? Is one mode preferred over the other* especially for a newbie's first quad (waiting for KK2.0 flight control board to be in stock)? I noticed the mode 1 and 2 versions are both available from HK's International Warehouse (w/ extra shipping costs of course). Thanks for your help.
 IBeHoey 382 points
Hey RedBlades, and welcome to the hobby. :D The main difference between Mode 1 and Mode 2, is the placement of the throttle and elevator controls. On a Mode 2 transmitter (which is pretty much the default mode used by everyone in the United States) has the throttle/rudder on the left stick, and elevator/aileron on the right stick. Mode 1 has the throttle/aileron on the right stick, and elevator/rudder on the left stick. Which one you go with is entirely up to you, but if you live in the States, Mode 2 is pretty much all you're going to see being used. :D

My radio will not bind with my KK board. It worked a few times and everything was OK now it doesn't bind. Anyone have any Ideas?
 JORGE 5 points
It happens some times, specially when you change the MODE on your radio, so stay with the same mode so far. Try turning off and on again, starting with the radio then the KKBoard, should work. Tell us how it goes.
 Paul 54 points
OK, I'll give it a try. Thanks

Thx so much NewToHobbyKing ill try to do that.

Negative 5 in stock is no way to do business!
 NewToHobbyKing 6324 points
Kelvin this transmitter is very popular. So you can put your Email address in the "STOCK ARRIVAL ALERT" and hope you get back fast enough to get one, when they come in. Or you can do what I did and pay the extra postage and buy from the International Warehouse. Overall you are still saving on this great Transmitter and Rx system.

Does anyone know how can I fix if by mistake I connected the polarity backwards and something burned inside?
 NewToHobbyKing 6324 points
Luis come over to the Members Forum (Blue tab at top of Page). Start a topic and have a chat. You are not the first to do this. So we need to pull the Transmitter apart and have a look on what is burnt out. I am sure some one will help!

Hey Luis, unfortunately, you more than likely cooked the voltage regulators, and possibly a small SMD capacitor as well. There's a great article on RCGroups that covers how to make this repair (just google "turnigy 9x reverse polarity" and it'll be the first link.) The repair itself is going to require a decent fine tipped soldering iron and a steady hand. If you have no prior experience soldering, then I'd recommend asking someone who can, or find some old discarded electronics to practice on first. Best of luck, be sure to come back and let us know how it turns out. :D

Hi, I am having difculties to stabiliz my tricop, I seen some post that explain about the P/I Gain Limit, Stick Scalling and so on...I am playing with it, and seems to work... BUT One thing I cant get to Ceros (0) are the lectures on the Receiver Test from KK2, I try the subtrims, and Trims, from the firmware, and the fisicals black bottons. But still falling to get it to Cero reading. My radio is Tgy-9X. Can anybody point me in the Right Directions. BTW Hi to IBeHoey Those, brushless (D2830-11 1000kv Brushless Motor)are awsome. Hi to Crono1124 as well.
 IBeHoey 382 points
Hey Jorge! Glad to hear you got the tri in the air! :D As for your issue, I'd recommend re-calibrating the sticks on your 9X. It's kind of confusing to do at first but try and follow along. (I copied these steps from a forum post) - Push and hold the right stick horizontal (lower) trim tab to the left, and the left stick vertical (side) trim tab up. - While holding, turn the TX power switch on. - You will get a screen that shows the version number of the firmware, with four zeroes (0000) at the top of the screen. - Center both sticks in their range in all axis, and press the menu button until it beeps and release. The screen number will change to 0001. - Move the right stick to the upper right corner, and press menu, and you should get a beep, and the number on the screen will change to 0002. - Put the right stick in the lower left corner, and press menu, and get a beep, and the number will change to 0003. - Release the right stick, and put the left stick in the upper right corner, and press menu until the number changes to 0004. - Put the left stick in the lower left corner, and press menu again until the number changes to 0005. - Center both sticks, and press menu until you hear a beep. - Press Exit. Once you do that, ensure that your subtrims/trim are zeroed out on the transmitter. Power everything up and try the receiver test again. If they're still not zeroed. you should now be able to use the subtrims to zero them out. When you get your tri flying right, be sure to post a video. :D

Hi, IBeHoey. Thankz again for this turorial, Im about to do doit, and Ill let you know how it goes, and for sure I will post the video. I was not sure if I was allow to ppost videos in the forum, but I can see that it is allowed. So either flys or not, I will post a video later on, so you can see whats going on.So Il come back soon with more news. Thanz again, your the best.
 JORGE 5 points
Hi, IBeHoey. Thankz again I already did the stick calibration, very nice , ceros on the KK2.0. BUT not really yet a nice and smooth hovering. Anyway, I am about to upload a video with some of my numbers and the tricop trying to fly, I hope You could detect whats wrong on my settings. Now btw How does self-leveling works, cz after turning it on on the radio, seems like noting happens, the tricop should self-lebel, but not, is it something else I should do to turn on the feature, after the righ-up side switch on the radio.

Can't order it - but I just got this email- ' You have added Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter w/ Module & 8ch Receiver (Mode 2) (v2 Firmware) to your watch list in www.hobbyking.com and this is an email to let you know that we have received a shipment just now! Click below to view this item; Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter w/ Module & 8ch Receiver (Mode 2) (v2 Firmware)
 IBeHoey 382 points
It stinks, I know, ran into a similar problem when I first ordered mine. These are very popular, and awesome transmitters so they sell out very fast. If you don't react right away upon receiving their email, and sometimes even when you do, they'll sell out. Along with having it on your wish list, it's also a good idea to put your email in the "Stock Arrival Alert" and be prepared to order right away when you receive your alert. Good luck and keep trying, when you finally get one of your own, you'll see why they're so popular. :D

One more question: will this Tx bind with my existing Hobbyking 6ch,4ch and 3ch receivers?

Thanks
 IBeHoey 382 points
Hey Robert, it'll depend on what model receivers you have. From what I recall, there are only 3 model receivers sold here that'll bind with the 9X. You have the 3 channel HK-GT2_RX, the 6 channel HK-T6A-V2 (my personal favorite), and the 8 channel Turnigy RX-9X8Cv2 which comes bundled with the Tx. I was unaware that HK even had a 4 channel receiver. As a rule of thumb, because there are also a few FlySky receivers that'll work as well, if it has the red tubed antenna on it, there's a good chance it'll work. :D
Robert  1 points - 5/6/2013

Any idea how many models the memory supports?
 IBeHoey 382 points
With the stock firmware you can have up to 8 models stored. Now, if you were to flash this Tx over to the ER9X firmware, you can have up to 16. :D

Hobbyking re-flashes each unit before it's sent out it says in the description, does anybody know how they do it without adding anything to the circuit board??
 IBeHoey 382 points
Hey Ral, I imagine it's done the same way that the solderless smartieparts programmer works. All of the pins needed for reflashing are broke out on the board with little solder pads. Just press the programmer against those pads and viola! The V2 version of the stock firmware is an improvement over the V1 firmware but it still has nothing on the ER9X firmware that can be flashed. I could write a term paper just on its awesomeness. :D

Where does everyone position the antenna? I lost an Ultra Sport .60 flying with this radio, ALMOST lost an Ugly Stik. In both cases I was using the receiver that came with the radio and just taped the antenna along the inside of the fuselage. Looked like the aircraft encountered a "dead zone" or had a brown-out. The Ugly Stik wouldn't respond for a few seconds, then re-established signal. Ultra Sport was coming out of a Split-S and just kept going straight down and full throttle. Both cases was about 1000 ft. away as krashNburn mentioned. I've since changed the radio in the Stik to Futaba Fasst (dual antennae) and built another Ultra Sport - Futaba in that one as well. NO glitches whatsoever. I'm still using the 9X, but for short-range flying only. Would the range be better if I just poked a hole in the bottom of the fuaelage and dangled it out in the breeze???
 krashNburn 54 points
In my quads and tricopter antenna is pointing up to the sky. In one of my jets it is dangling outside of the canopy. I almost lost a F9F panther when I encountered a deadzone at less than 500 feet and maybe 60ft altitude. Luckily the 9x does recover quickly and I managed to get it back in one piece. I am buying the frsky diy kit on my next order!!
 GhiaMonster 31 points
What is this FrSky DIY kit of which you speak?? :-)
 krashNburn 54 points
Look at product id: DIYmoudleV8HT or FRTEL. A lot of pilots say frsky is very good and some say its better than futaba fasst system. Bruce from *RCmodelreviews video shows you how to install in the 9x to make it more robust with the FrSky ACCST system.
 IBeHoey 382 points
I agree with Krash, the FrSky conversion is almost a must do for this transmitter. I have two of these transmitters, one with the FrSky module, one without. I have always thought the stock setup was sufficient enough for smaller models and I have even used it on my Quad and Tricopter for the better part of a year without any issues (this includes taking my quad up so high all I could make out was a small X in the sky). The only reason I initially did the FrSky conversion was for the telemetry features. However, this past weekend, I maidened a new FT Baby Blended and experienced my first brownout/dead zone with this transmitter. Luckily, nothing was damaged. I believe I pulled off one of the most graceful tree landings ever. It has made me second guess the stock setup though as I was flying well within range when this occurred. So yeah, after this, I'm going to convert this one over as well. :D
 krashNburn 54 points
9XR is in stock. I think I'm going to buy one now. The DJT and DF modules also in stock. From what i've read these are plug n play. Yeeah buddy!
krashNburn  54 points - 5/1/2013

This is a great radio but please make sure you perform a range test before going out too far like I did. Have been using this 9x radio for a while now but haven't been able to see how far I can take it. So I took it out for a range test with Fatshark FPV and I lost the 9x radio signal at about 1000 feet and my tricopter became dead weight. Fortunately I was low to the ground when I made that 180 degree turn and no damage to my baby! *Check out my video youtu.be/YjjTjB5Maqs
 Ral fRotten 1073 points
Just a thought, most of the time you were below tree top height the tree's being obviously attached to the ground would have extended the ground or shielding to a higher level, maybe at a higher altitude than tree top level you would not have any ground interference and may have got further range, I have a very basic radio as well as this 9x and I have never tried the range as you did, but I can fly the planes further than I can see them, I estimate about 400meters and I can no longer see them, I fly on average 50-150meters high, but I've never lost signal, some people are claiming 2 kilometers for these radio's!, ...Just thinking, have you tried it away from ground clutter??
 Ral fRotten 1073 points
Oh I forgot, great video, I enjoyed the ride thank you!

 krashNburn 54 points
Thanks! I ordered osd for fat shark so I will test in higher altitude next time and how far it will go. Just thinking of how I can do this without losing an aircraft...
 Ral fRotten 1073 points
Yes scary stuff, how could you attach a parachute to open on loss of signal?...maybe better if you don't find out the range!.. here's another thought! what if you tested the range VERTICALLY, when you loose range it will fall down and hopefully back into range, maybe better to try this with a fixed wing, easier to recover if it's upside down than a copter upside down, I used to fly simple 2channel helicopters that had a range of about 100 meters I would send them up as far as they would go till they went out of range, when they fell back I always recovered signal before they hit the ground , but I don't know if a quad will fall straight down? interesting problem
 krashNburn 54 points
Only one way to find out right?? LOL good idea going vertical. I thought about findind a tall parking garage, go on the top level, then see how far i can go line of sight by walking or driving away...Maybe that'll work?
 Ral fRotten 1073 points
It might work, but the concrete/steel building is still an extension of the earth so it would I think still interfere, but it's worth a try especially if you can keep line of sight to the copter!
 IBeHoey 382 points
Hey Krash, nice video. I really think this is the summer that I finally get in to FPV. Looks like soo much fun. I need to go back and retest this but awhile back I was trying to devise a fail-safe setup for a newly built Quad and this radio (stock at the time). As you probably already know, this tx/rx setup does not have fail-safe. I found this out the hard way while I was testing it out. I loss signal, and the Quad kept on flying. Had it not been for a tree branch, no telling where, or when it would have landed. Like I said, I really need to retest this, but I'm fairly certain that when the signal is loss, the receiver will just hold the last received value. I bring this up because in your video, after you lose signal, your tri just dropped instead of just floating along. Are you running a Multiwii board?
 krashNburn 54 points
Thanks! Am using kk2 v1.5 board. The rx on board is the stock 9x 8-ch. I don't think it has fail safe but good point. I probably need to check it. I got lucky this time I guess. There is a board out there (ardu pilot) with RTH capability if Rx loses signal. Or pay $400 for na za flight control. I m intimidated w multiwii stuff. My 328p n Gps is collecting dust. I just want PNP so I can fly more :)
 IBeHoey 382 points
Heh yeah, I never realized the importance of having fail safe until I had that runaway Quad. Scary stuff. I brought up Multiwii because as of the latest release, version 2.2, the failsafe actually works now with these receivers. Before, Multiwii would just monitor the throttle PWM signal, and if it were to drop below 985, it would then trigger the failsafe. Since these receivers just retain the last value received, it would never trigger. Those ardupiot APM boards are nice, really nice. Over the past year I have tried many different flavors of firmware but I always find myself going back to Multiwii. I agree, it can be very intimidating at first, so many things to configure and setup, but once you get the hang of it, it'll pay dividends in both performance and for your wallet. Those features you seek with the more expensive hardware (RTH, autoland, and even GPS waypoints are on the way) can all be done with Multiwii. So I say dust off your 328, load up v2.2 and give it another go. As of 2.2, the default values are usually enough to get your craft up in the air and flying. After that, the little tweaking you'll need to do is just setting it up to your desired flying style. Of course, if you need any advice or help, feel free to ask. :D

quad-copter settings for turnigy 9x receiver
 NewToHobbyKing 6324 points
Clayton you only use channel 1 to 4. You must have a flight controller board (FCB). Like the KK2.0. Channel 1 goes to Ail on the FCB, channel 2 goes to Ele on FCB, channel 3 goes to tho on FCB and Channel 4 goes to Rub on FCB. You set the transmitter to plane mode too.

 NewToHobbyKing 6324 points
Aelse so you have your first RC SYSTEM. (So you were asking for some one else)? You can fly quad or Tri on both. But if you are buying this is the better for Multi-Rotors. So why can you still not reply. So 14 day after first buy you can ask Live Cs why you are not Gold.

Do you think this would be a good first radio
 RCfoamie 21 points
This would be an excellent first radio. It will grow with you. It will take a little getting use to as far as navigating through the menus but it's worth it in the long run.
 NewToHobbyKing 6324 points
Aelse it does depend what you are doing. If money is not an option then you would not be here. So I think the HK 6 channel is a better first RC System. Also when you need to upgrade to this, the receivers are compatible. Hobby King 2.4Ghz 6Ch Tx & Rx V2 (Mode 2) (SKU: HK-T6A-M2). I used one of them for 2 years before I upgrade to the Turnigy9XV2. I still use my HK as a backup. Also soon the 9XR must come with a module and that will be a great buy.

I fire up again today, NO PROPS ON, but still one of the front mottors not responding propperlly, how do I know if the ESC are working propperlly, I didnt program them , I bought the Turnigy Mity Program card but Im not sure if it works with it, Now if is absolutelly necessary that POrogramming, should O do it individually , like one by one...? Any help pleas?
 NewToHobbyKing 6324 points
Jorge. How long ago did you buy. This would be much easier if you could reply. You may be able to reply 14 days after you buy. (Gold User). (Ask live CS). So to test an ESC you unplug your receiver, ESC and battery and motor from your Quad. You now plug the servo like plug, on the ESC, into your receiver (Channel 3). Then plug the ESC back into the motor. So you are ready to test. Last thing make sure your prop is off and throttle is a Zero. (Your ESC needs a uBec built in or you will need a receiver battery pack).

Do you mean theres a price to be paid, let me tell you that two days ago it was my wife helping me to set up the KK2, and she indeed was the firs to mess with that stage of the setup, fortunnelly nothinbg happens to her. It was me the ene that paid the price (fortunnelly again). Let me tell you my friend, the accident can be prevented/avoid if someone as I did specify whats the most dangerous part of the setup, and from my prospective and I am gonna talk again for the noobs like me, not for the PROS like you...WARNING NOOBS!!!, While seting up your KK2.0 for any Multirottor, REMOVE PROPPS While...doing it. SPECIALLY while CALIBRATTING THE ESC. Now, I knoe theres a lot of nice people outthere like, IBeHoey or DumbAce willing to give nice imput and advice, not this retarded and selfish statement.

Ok, IBeHoey, thankz for your answer, and in here, I have to make a WARNING to everybody who is messing with multicopers, (mine is a tricop FC-KK2.0)Cz, Today I had a very bad accident re-calibrating the ESC props ON...bad idea....I ignored all the warning people is been given out there and pay the price couple of stiches in my arm and a lot of blod......and s broken arm Tricop. Anyway, I was so angry and frustrated that even thinking on quick...but at the same time is too much time money and effort, that In this point it is really overwhelming...BRW, not idea what is the-recenter stick- I know theres some Radio setup has to be done, but still on the low learning curve..thankz...
 weenie 115 points
I believe at one point in time we all have been down that road....I have had a heli tail blade get me in the face....When ever you are messing with the esc always remove the prop or loosen motor from main gear....It will save you a trip to the hospital!!!
JORGE  5 points - 4/17/2013

Hi, Can I have some help, my Tricop is working fine, but not liftig, I have remove some weight , and improves that only the right motor is lifting, now, seems that the left and back motor is not receiving enought potency, any clue abaut, thankz!
 IBeHoey 382 points
Hmm, I would try recalibrating your ESC's first. After that, depending on which FC board you're using, you might want to recenter your sticks as well. Did your setup work once before, but is now having issues lifting, or has it always been like this?
 weenie 115 points
I'm just going to suggest that maybe you have cw and ccw props....Check to see if all the motors are spinning in the right direction...It could be a long shot that maybe one or two of your motors are reversed in direction....If not then follow IBeHoey's advice...

No problem. as for the stock, it's hard to say. This is a very popular item, so when they get a new batch in, they sell out pretty quickly. Your best bet would be to put your email address in the Stock Arrival Alert box above. You'll receive an email when a new batch comes in. :D

Don't let the low price fool you! This is a quality transmitter! It needs a few tweak to make it awesome though. I modified mine with a rechargable hobbyking LiFe tx battery pack, backlight display, firmware upgrade to er9x, and a FrSky DIY Transmitter module. Takes about a day to modify it, but you will certainly get your moneys worth and then some.

Great radio after installing custom firmware. The stock firmware is rather cumbersome.

Best valued transmitter on the market. I already have 3 of these, and many friends happy with theirs after I recomended as well. I bought this one to try out the ER9X firmware conversion.

I've never had a glitch nor a failure. Order the Turnigy TRX 2.55 3s and you will fly for months without a recharge. I also add the backlight to all of mine. My favorite color is the green, it stands out the most.
