We love J-3 Cubs here at Hobbyking as you may have noticed! This PNF Cub is remarkably scale for it's size, is easy to fly and being a bit bigger can handle more wind than some of the smaller foam J3's we offer. A real favourite with scale pilots, this is a Cub you will be proud to own.
Plug N Fly of course means quick assembly and almost every component is attached by screws, including the 2 wing halves, even the tailplane can be removed for transportation if desired. All servos are pre-installed as is the ESC & powerful Brushless Motor. This model is ideal for RC pilots of all ability and it is not often that a geniuine scale model can be flown by relative beginners. The scale detail is quite amazing, plastic injection moulded parts are used extensively and include the dummy engine, wing struts and and the dummy bungee under-carriage.
Practical features include the linked steerable tailwheel, large magnetic battery hatch, construction of course from tough & easy to repair EPO foam, large "Cub" wheels with rubber tyres and 4s power for guaranteed performance.....a fantastic looking model on the ground and in the air.
sbjcthawk, I guess I kind of didn't answer the question below, we mostly take off and land from the paved road. Some guys belly land in the hayfield. The hay is getting pretty tall right now. How about you, where do you fly? Does this plane handle grass fields ok? Do you use the 2200 4 cell battery, or something different?
Yep I use a turnigy nano tech 2200 4s andget about 10 min flights maybe more as for runway I live on a hill so I takeoff from the top (grass) and land on a dirt/gravel at the bottom or vice vresa depends on the wind but it can handle grass really well package is even better This plane is so docile on low rates if your son has had some stick time on a 4 ch plane he will love it or it would be great for him with a buddy box
A bunch of us in this small town I live in are near a hayfield that has a paved road through the center of it. This is where we all fly. It is great, the road dead ends so there is nothing around the end of the road but a huge field.
Or any body really. Those that have this plane, do you like it? it seems like it would have decent power because it has a fairly large motor and 4s battery.
love this plane it's super easy to fly and on 4s it has buckets of power I haven't done any acrobatics with it but it's just a wonderful relaxing plane to fly
That is good to know. I have a young son that is learning to fly and I am thinking he might like to fly this too some day. It seems like a good solid setup.
I really want to buy this plane, I should just buy it and stop looking at it. If another plane shows up at my house, my wife will put me in the loony bin.
Well I'm with you on the MAA ( model airplanes anonyous ) I've got 3 planes one is this beautiful cub and now I want the new AT-6 the put up on the new arrivals page pluse. A fpv setup cane you say $$$$$$
Ok, thanks a lot. Now I have looked at the AT-6 and I want that too. Actually I was already looking at that at "Yellow Fruit Hobby" and I wanted it there also. My poor wife.....
I am not sure what you are asking? If you are in the USA or Canada, you can order from the US warehouse. If you are somewhere else, you might need to order it from the International warehouse.
I checked at yellow fruit hobby aka B.H. and it appears that their version of this has a smaller motor, the 3536. I am thinking the 3548 on this one probably has the same prop shaft, I would try one from the durafly planes, mustang, corsair etc. I can't say for sure, but I bet they are the same. they appear to be the same manufacturer as the motor I saw at B.H. Good Luck!
Do you still have to use a 4s, or can you use a 3s instead? **********s**** sells another J3 1400mm with a 3536 800kv motor and you need a 2200mah 3s lipo. I just wanted to know the difference of if you can use different batteries.
This plane is suppose to fly slow, putting a 4S and a motor large enough to fly a J3 near twice this size is unlike HK. Plus a 12 x 9 prop! The problem is this plane is heavy with a high wing loading. Bathe wingspan is too short as well. This is more like the Clipped Wing Cub! If all you have is 3S, try them out. The kv is only 700, so increasing the pitch of the prop to 9 should give you more thrust at lower RPM (3S). I think a 4S will be too much RPM with that prop. I would use a 12x6 on the 4S. The other cub maybe lighter with a larger wing, it will fly more like a cub. Check the wing loading. It might be nicer?
the bh one has a 30a speedy wile this one has a 45a speedy and it Fly’*s about the same length of time as the 4s, but you lose about 1/3 of your throttle at top end…* 3s is more for flying…**slow…**longer take offs the scale look. and most people yse a 12*8 prop
Does this j3 always come with the wrong parts bags with nothing in them wrong rods for rudder bold holes that don,t line up no glue book that says to glue wheel to ax springs that go no where to name few things I found
RICH GOLDADE
Have any of you that have flown it, feel that it's too heavy for a J3? The wing loading is much to high. The wingspan/fuse ratio is off. This seems to happen with allot of semi-scale J3s. If I am going to buy a J3, I want it to float and slow way down. I used to land mine on a football field! Turn around and take off down wind. This is more like a Clipped-Wing Cub! But it sure looks nice!
Nope, all EPO foam, very forgiveable and strong. Good to about this size, then needs too much reinforcement and becomes heavy and sometimes spongy on performance planes. I like balsa for larger models and fiberglass for large performance stuff.
Use 12x8 Master Airscrew Wood prop...nice soft sound...lets you fly 5 min. longer on your battery...looks really nice and scaled/yellow tips, light wood finish.
Fly’*s about the same length of time as the 4s, but you lose about 1/3 of your throttle at top end…* 3s is more for flying…*slow…*longer take offs…*the scale look.
Placed order for this CUB on 12Nov2012 and still have not received any notice of its status. Sent two messages requesting status. I have the order number but nothing else.
I tried to communicate with HK via live chat but after waiting for 15 or more minutes with nothing happening I just sent them a message.
I suspect that this time of the year they might be swamped with orders and messages.
CharlieH
The floats that come with the Flyzone DHC2 Beaver will be a good size for this model. I intend to mount them on mine. It will require some retrofitting, but should look amazing. This cub is more a clipped wing cub based on it's wingspan. Good Luck
I am thinking of getting into Model Flying. Are there and ready to go, all in planes, that I would just buy? I see a lot of planes have requirements for additional parts. I am not sure I would pick the rich accessories so an "all in" plane deal would be fine. even a Heli is an option.
Thanks!
There are tons of options out there for you. Heli's are pretty difficult to fly unless you get a two channel. This is throttle control and (up and down) and (left and right). These are pretty easy to find all inclusive. One plane that I would recomend for you is the Bixler. if is a stable platform for beginners and ins mads of pretty sturdy foam in case you crash. it comes with a batery and a charger. The only thing that you need is 8 AA batteries for the radio. Attached you will find a link to
wast of 130$ remove the speed controller and hit it with a hammer right away before you do anything else, after ground range check: 10 seconds into 1st flight second turn (about 75 ' up) lost all control motor stopprd and plane hit the asphalt like a brick, the battery, wing and fuselage not repairable. while picking up the pieces I noticed one of the speed controller wires disconnected> after thought I think this is a 3 cell kit (not a 4 cell) based on the 12 X 9. no KV on the motor, and nothing on the speed controller. The plane is beautiful, and for 9 seconds flew great. If this was in kit form I would give 6 stars, but now I am out 130$ and a 4 cell 20C battery,

Plane they supplied to me is definitely the 4s version, 3648 motor and 12x9 prop confirm this. True, it has a no name generic ESC, but so do most others at this price point. The motor, esc and servos all work nicely on mine.
Plane arrived in good conditon, double boxed and with molded foam inner box to protect the components. It assembled easily and I've now flown it 11 times with no problems. It's an incredible looking, very nice flying cub.

Ordered and received in 7 business days west to east coast. packaging was perfect. Kit was complete PNF, needing a battery and radio/receiver. Built it in 2-3 hours. Soldered EC3 plug on esc. Mystery ESC, to which I don't know the programming. Motor is the same as in the FMS mustang we have. Nice 2 blade 12X9 prop.
Flew very well. CG was at 65mm from leading edge. Behaved quite well. We added a pilot for scale look. The landing gear was more show than go. it works well in that the 3mm steel wire that is the main frame of the landing gear does all the work. The springs and triangulation pieces are for show and ripped off in a high grass take off.
The wheels, though scale, need short short grass to work. I have doubled them in size for a take-off anywhere cub.
The paint is miss matched from plastic to foam, and comes off at the contact points if you don't put tape to protect it. It does look great in the air and on the ground.
This is a 4S 700kV setup which has plenty of punch with 345Watts for a large plane. 1/2 throttle flight with ease. 2200mAh battery is good for over 10 minutes of flying touch and goes. This is better than the 3S versions of this plane. This plane is fast, takes some practice landing smoothly. The great detail touches include stays on the wings, braces on the elevator and rudder. they came unglued in the heat of my car. Careful you don't loose one of those

BEWARE OF HOBBY KING SHIPPING CHARGES FROM THE USA WAREHOUSE!!!!!! I ordered this plane and the Cub 1800mm wing span. 12 days had went by and no shipping (no one had contacted me from HK). When I asked the question WHY, it took HK another day to find out that I owed another $31.03 for shipping. When I ordered it, the USA shipping was $ .01, since my order was over $200.00. HK is doing everything possible to keep from refunding my money. Since, I am out $275.00 already, I have no choice but to pay the shipping charges. I guarantee you that I will never order anything from Hobby King or the USA Warehouse again. Small items will be OK, it's the big items that will get you. Until they change their system to reflect the actual shipping charges, JUST BE CAREFUL.

Great looking plane here guys. I've had several flights on mine with a 4s lipo. I disagree with others who say it's a flast plane, I really don't think it is. It's fast enough but still seems a little slow to me. It flys well and it very predictable. If you've ever flown a brushless, flaitwing w/aileron hobbyzone supercub LP, this J3 is like a giant version of that. Landing gear springs will break or fall off but look nice while they last. Great plane for the price. I wanted to make it a float plane but I don't think it has enough power with the stock setup. No regrets buying this one, it's a beauty!
