The Ryan STA is an icon of the golden age of aviation, quickly replacing the attractive but under-powered Ryan ST (Sports Trainer), the STA (Sport Trainer Aerobatic) won the 1937 International Aerobatic Championship, leading to immediate interest from the US military, if you are lucky, you can still see one of these fantastic looking aircraft doing the air show circuits.
On the other hand, you could own and fly your own! We loved the Ryan STA Plug n Fly so much when testing that it became a firm favorite with all the team. Made from tough EPO, we have really put this model through it's paces and it is still going strong! Scale detail is impressive for a foam model, the huge wheel pants, rigging wire, panel lines and wing struts give an impression of a much larger model, both in the air and on the ground.
There is plenty of power from the pre-fitted motor for classic aerobatics like stall turns & barrel rolls, yet the generous STA wing area makes for a superbly balanced model that is just as happy flying at scale speed. Likewise, the pre-fitted servo/control surface combination is perfect, the result is one of the smoothest EPO models you are ever likely to fly.
I have just found out CG at 40mm behind leading edge. To achieve this, decided on 2200 3s battery pushed right forward, and 10g weight in nose, rather than recommended battery and lots of weights. Movements at 25mm, seem a bit excessive, but see how it goes.
The two front screws in each of the landing gear legs are so close to the the wheel pants that it's impossible to reach them. What is the best way to get a screwdriver to them?
Lurchi, Nice! If you want to, I would recommend cutting into the chamber, towards the cowling, and setting a piece Velcro in there. You will be able to remove some of the lead weights. Makes for a minute or so more of flying time, and less stress on your system. Happy flights!

I flew this plane of the box with a 1800 battery and it was a handful. Very tail heavy. I ended up adding 52 grams (6 x 1/4 oz lead weights) of lead to the nose to get it to balance. Now it flies like a dream.
I love this airplane but the shipping at $42 is out of line a little. Most shipping for airplanes of this size is around $25. But as I said, I really like it.
GO to section floats and there is a good video how to choose I have done a float plane but a balsa plane high winger .important CG nose a little heavy so it lands slowly.
Find model hobbyking Pitts Special and watch video and should have an idea but I think that that plane is a bit tricky for a set of floats and you need those wires to support the wing .
Susan It is a bit big but if that is all you have OK. Just remember the C of G. Also out to pull to many G's. The load on wings will be greater so steady on TURNS and PULL OUTS. I hope this helps
One thing I noticed, on the video the ryan that was flying had a glo motor on it, and also looked bigger than the wingspan given on the specs...check it out, maybe someone can put a real foamie sta video on for us to see the plane that's advertised fly!!.
Hi,
stock motor = 185 Watts * 17 Amps with Zippy 20 C 1300 mAh 3S Lipo. Good thrust, enough power with stock prop (something like a 8,5 x 6).
Better with 9 x 3,8 TGY prop : Same power but better climb rate.
Reccomended settings for throws and CG are OK, good response.
When you open throttle, model clearly DIVES !!! I added a thin washer under the motor mount to have 1° up thrust, now it's absolutely perfect.
I've cut a hole under the pilot's seat for better cooling and locked rigging wire springs with plyers, now they won't move...
Good flight characteristics, flies slowly (thick wing profile) with no vice, a cute classic plane for classic aerobatics or relax flights, even with 10 Kts wind.
Overall quality is good, no **** equipments in this model.
You must have a different model to mine Maidened today
took nearly half the park to get airborne when it finally did it tip stalled on the first turn and crashed flys like a brick on std motor and prop
Model arrived with faulty esc (not unusual with HK)
Ill repair broken wing and repower
I think th wing corde could be another 25 mm wider may help with stock power set up as model is quite heavy
I would not suggest it for beginners. The wing area is quite limited and it's also not that light, so it needs some speed to fly. There are certainly better planes for learning, but if you can fly it's a nice little plane.
Hi Anthony. Are you the oficial spokesperson for HK NSW? Great to get your info but IMHO it would carry more credence if we understand your position. Cheers
Wow, great looking bird! I still have the old GP 1.20 size in the same scheme. One of the most beautiful aircraft in history. Good to see it modeled again.
hahah.. totaly agree with rlecocg Electrics all the way for me and there are some electrics which cost more than turbines. no more glow for me. only some petrol and Electrics.
yes is true that some electric cost more but I like to have more than one and when I buy I try to use common parts such as battries and ESKs and I just orderd the swamp fun boat at least it comes cheap having in hand batteries and ESK from airplanes.

I have recieved this plane today. What a very very nice plane and construction very impressed it looks no need of glue as I can see.ready coloured and very high detaled. I have to make sure that I buy this kind of epo contruction of this type when buying other aircrafts because I am hooked in this hobby even just to own them. The motor looks strong as well, hope to assemble it and fly it soon.

I had a bit of trouble getting mine trimmed right at first and it was a real handful. I removed the weight from the front and cut up the cowling and fitted it with magnets so that I could put the battery further forward to save weight. I hate the idea of adding weight to a model when you can move stuff around instead. The battery now goes in from underneath just behind the motor and then the cowling clicks on over it. I also left off the rather heavy rigging and rigged it with braided fishing line, functional and light. I put in a 1550 kv D3128 with the standard prop and it hammers. Once trimmed properly i was pleasantly surprised at how this plane performs, it flies quite fast but will slow down and just float in for a landing, I built suspension into the spats worrying that they might get broken by fast landing but I now think that it was probably unnecessary. Some of the lines aren't quite scale but it looks great in the air. I would recommend to watch your aileron position, having them sit just a little high adds stability.

Five out of five on this model. The only minor issue I found was the wires on the ESC are long and puts the ESC far back in the fuse under the canopy. Easy to get to but may not get enough air to stay cool enough. I just cut an extra hole in the nose behind prop and an exhaust hole under tail near screws for air flow. Build was easy, instructions are about normal, mostly pics but they do tell you what screws to use. The wire support struts are just decoration. Use some needle nose pliers to crimp the springs close, they will pop off on bouncy landings.
Flying was great, nice speed and handling. To balance CG I used a 3s 1800mah ParkZone Lipo and it was dead on. No extra trim at all. Battery bay is long so put a piece of form behind lipo to prevent sliding. Flew hands off with this set up and she just cruised along on 1/2-3/4 throttle. Rolls, loops and climbs with no problems. Big wings gives for long glides. Cut power and she will glide right in on landings but start your glide path back because she will glide long. Gear is big but I don't know about grass with those big wheel pants, I was on pavement so I had no issues.
All in all a great Flyer at a good price. Oh and the wires whistle through the air...............Happy Flying.

Rien a redire. Reçu en temps en en heure, commandé en Allemagne.
Tips:
Nice, only few day from Deutchland to France.
Nothing break or missing.

Flies great, looks good in the air, nice scale details. Takes a beating and the landing gear is strong. Tip; apply a dab of Cyano glue on the rigging wire springs to keep them in place.
