Hobbyking ASK-21 EP, EPO (PNF)

Hobbyking ASK-21 EP, EPO (PNF)
Hobbyking ASK-21 EP, EPO (PNF)

The Hobbyking ASK21 became a firm favorite with the test team during development, it is fast enough with well balanced control surfaces for some aerobatic flying, yet easy enough to fly that a relative beginner can enjoy this superb model.

Plug and Fly of course means all the hard work is done for you, the low kv motor and large prop combo offers plenty of thrust for relatively low amp draw, when tested, we found this combo to be very efficient, so a good climb rate and good flight times are assured. The pre-fitted 9g servos are all per-centred are ready to go, and with no glue required at any point during assembly, you will find that you can be enjoying this quality 2 meter glider in no time.

Construction is from a nicely finished, glossy and of course tough EPO, the large landing wheel adds to the practicality and will help to keep this superb looking glider shiny and new for years to come. The wing joiner and dihedral brace are super strong, and well designed for easy field assembly, the wing is re-enforced and very stiff, this is 2 meter glider is a joy to fly and is a great choice for both the in-experienced and experienced RC pilot.

maiden mine yesterday. Three 40-50 minute flights. First flight I was disappointed in the sink rate. A few clicks of up elev and pesto, much better. even caught the best thermal of the day with the Ask 21 rather than my Minimoa. I did have lots of nasty stalls resulting in a big wing tip drop and spin. Had a heck of a time looping as she would roll out coming out of the bottom. Discovered that keeping the speed up was the answer. After I laded I noticed that neither wing tip had any wash out. Actually they both tipped down. Using a heat gun and a little twisting action they both now have a tad of wash out. Hope this helps. I'd like to be able to slow her down with out so much drama, especially on landing. Spoilerons * 80% did steepen the gilde angle. Just required a tad of up elev to keep the nose level and speed down. She is an acrobat. Nice snap rolls and inverted doesn't take all that much elev to maintain level flight. CG was at 50mm. I'll be giving 55mm a try after I test fly the mods(wash out, aileron, elev, rudder horns to max position) I just made from the first flights. All in all a very nice flyer.

anybody know what size the nylon wing bolts are, i know they are 40mm long but what M rating ?
 randy 16 points
I don't know off hand, but I took mine to The Homedepot and found brass replacements. come to think of it since I replaced both the bolt and the nylon nuts(with steel clinch nuts mounted to a ply board), they probably aren't the same exact thread. I highly recommend replacing both as I did. Makes a much stronger connection. I'm in the process of making up a set of bolts and nuts for the rear mounting holes as well. These will have the nuts mounted on a removable ply board. Should make the wing structure much stiffer.

Does this model tend to climb very steeply under power and require down elev to compensate, like my Art-Tech 2M MINIMOA? I use 35% down elev at 100% throttle on the MINIMOA. Thanks: Randy
 ADAM 6 points
it does climb steeply under power and you will need some down elev to control the climb
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
 randy 16 points
Thanks Adam: I'll add 30% down elev * WOT..
 ADAM 6 points
i would probably control the climb out manually more than set a defined amount of trim for it, it will change with wind conditions etc, just be prepared to apply some down elev as needed
 randy 16 points
Thanks for your input. Based on my my Minimoa's climb under power, 30% mix still results in a healthy climb out with elev stick centered.

WHAT IS THE BEST MODEL FOR SLOAp soaring from 5 to 15 mph, with the best speed for that condition of wind?
Phoenix 2000 or ask-21?
If you have other model...but if the difference it is very little, I prefere phoenix 2000 with flap (Just to prove the flaps, not because they are really needed)
thx all

anything from hobby king that says it does not need glue ....well it needs glue i really want to take back my last paragraph because after my maiden the engine flew out because whoever made this plane did not screw in the motor into the mount tight enough
Dean  10 points - 1/5/2013

hey i have just recieved my ask 21 in the mail yesterday i have put it all together and followd the manual and when it comes to the CG it says it is 50mm from the leading edge when when i ballace it in the tip of my fingures it balaces perfect but when it sits on the ground it is nose heavy is this supposed to happen or is ity supposed to sit on the tail ... all up it is a very nice plane... people say there is melted foam where the servos are but mine looks like it the same but when you look closer at it, its the transpericy of the white clear foam onto the black servo... im actually scared to maiden it becausre it is such A beautiful model 5stars !!! hobby king
 randy 16 points
That's because it's balancing on it's main wheel not the cg. This way when landing and slowing down the front with skid plate hits not the tail.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ssv5AU7AAK4 The airfoil of the ASK-21 (RG15) makes here very suitable for slope soaring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ssv5AU7AAK4

On the slope are always rough because of the downdraft on the lee side - I used flaps to come throug the lee

Hello, Is this glider suitable for beginners?
 Dean 10 points
yes it sure is perfect for beginners as you can cut off the power and still be able to fly it
 Dean 10 points
infact i just bought one today and i am a novice flyer
 1stAidan 104 points
Personally, I don't recomend this plane for a beginner. I think something that can be more easily banked and yanked ,like the AXN or Bixler, would be better.
 andy 1 points
I bought the ASK-21 as my first model as I'm a beginner. I would agree with 1stAidan that it is probably a bit on the big side for a novice and agree the AXN or Bixler would be a better candidate. In saying that it is a beautiful plane. Well done Hobby King!

hi,

are there any peplacement parts for this model?
 Martin165 86 points
Look at the manual that came with this and it will show you a parts list. With that you can look up the distributors. I have ordered this glider myself. Just have not received it yet.
Martin
 Martin165 86 points
This is an Art-Tech model. They sell the parts, but alas, only to distributors. So if you know any distribtors that sell and distribute Art-Tech models, you can then get parts.
Hope this helps.

Is it big enough to carry FPV equipment?
 Maximilionalpha 1069 points
It's big enough, but dont over do it until you make slight mods to the plane, like reinforcing the wings, adding more elevator surface area and maybe a more powerful motor.
 Nuri Selim 34 points
I have same glider and I am flying especially on slope you can install but depend on the your FPV equipment weight so can install but I highly recommend you that you put 1 inch fiberglass tape bottom of the wings along the spar.Take care .Nuri Selim Etger

My Ask21 motor is broken. I'm looking for brushless motor for my ASK21. Which engine should I buy?
 Maximilionalpha 1069 points
You could use this one as a replacement motor...SKU: T2627-1200
 Ingeneba 1 points
The ASK21 my engine seems to have very little power! I would like to change it but I find that I can not remove, the screws are not accessible and the plastic base is attached to the fuselage, as the engine is removed without breaking the fuse???
 1stAidan 104 points
There is a small hole in the foam on the side and bottom just behind the spinner. Use a 1/16 allen wrench to loosen the two set screws inside. The motor will pop right out.
Jeffster  1 points - 3/3/2012

When I went to attach the wings to the fuse I found that the two nylon screws would not tighten down. I assume that there are blind mounting nuts embedded in the fuse, but there's no access to them from underneath, and no matter how I put the nylon bolts or how much I turn them in they don't thread into anything. I even tried turning it over while tightening the bolts to see if the nuts would fall onto them. Did I get a bad kit?
 Maximilionalpha 1069 points
Sometimes these things happen. Just a minor defect, that's easily remedied. Just take a paper clip and a flashlight. Shine the light from the side of the fuse until you can see the silhouette of the mounting nut. Once spotted, pierce the fuse in the are that the nut is located in and work it towards the screw opening. Once you've got a corner of the nut in view, drop a tiny bit of glue onto the corner and finish working it into place.

 Jeffster 1 points
Thanks, I'll give it a try. Got an X-ray machine I could www.link
 Jeffster 1 points
I tried using a bright light and still couldn't see where the nut was, so I cut a window in the side of the fuselage just below the level of the blind mounting nuts. With that I was able to get the bolts started and glued the nuts in place, but when I put the wing on and thread the bolts through it they are too short to engage the nuts. It looks like I will need to get longer bolts to reach. Are they 10-32 or some metric size? Anybody know if HK carries a longer version?
 Maximilionalpha 1069 points
You didn't reposition the nuts into their slotted cut-outs, but instead, just slid them over into view. It's going to be like fitting the pegs inside of their correct shaped slots(star into a star slot, square into the square slot, rectangle into the retangled slot). Get it, now? Those nuts fit snugly up into their six sided slot.

Yes, you can do FPV in by mounting a pusher prop instead. You can still fpv with this as it is, also.

can beginer handle this?
 Maximilionalpha 1069 points
I wouldn't think so. If I were a beginner, I'd go more for the Easy Fly, being that it is more of a floater and this plane is not. This plane is built for cutting through the air(speed and aerobatics). If you don't wish to get discouraged about your first time flying, I'd suggest the Easy Fly glider. Happy Flying!

Does anyone know how to program the Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) for this sailplane? I need to put the brake on. Thanks.
 Pascal 4 points
I used the manual for the "mystery" ESC and it worked, though the sounds are a little bit different. Factory default has brake on (OK for sailplane).
 Maximilionalpha 1069 points
The brake is already on. That's factory default settings. Just bind to you Tx.

The motor on this thing seems impossible to remove. Its mount is glued to the foam. Has anyone managed to replace their motor or found a compatible propeller?
 Kapitany 46 points
Hi Cossi, You can easy remove white noise from black propeller mount. It only clicked to black part. Use screw driver and do it accuracy. Under the cup you found screws, and can remove motor. Kapitany
 Cossi 1 points
thanks Kapitany but I dont have a problem to remove the propellor. That was easy but I cant find a replacemet propellor to fit on this motor so I want to replace the motor. I will try harder to remove the motor
 Kapitany 46 points
Hi Cossi, You can ask about replacement motor and propeller, Art-tech company :)) Kapitany
 Pascal 4 points
You need a small hexagonal key to untighten 2 locking screws which you can access via 2 small holes in the nose (one at the bottom, one on the side). When the screws are loose, you can pull the motor out.

which is better, this plane or phoenix2000?, which is the best glider hobbyking? 2m looking for something, thanks.
 Maximilionalpha 1069 points
The phoenix 2000, hands down. The ASK-21 is a bit flimsy and there's not a great deal of elevator control.
 jhoffmeyer 11 points
I didn't try the Phoenix, but I can tell you that you can't go wrong with the ASK! I flies really easily and is full aerobatics capable (with max throws it handles wild). It glides and soars nicely, able to turn into rdiculously small radius. 30min with TGY Nano Tech 1800 3s. CG obtained without any lead, quite good power and easy landings. The for me is that the ASK21 is semi-scale, and it looks like a really bigger one in flight.

All planes with high aspect ratios will do this. It's called adverse yaw. You need to lead into the turn with both rudder and aileron, then let off the ailerons and follow trough with the rudder, exit the turn with both aileron and rudder. This takes some practice but eliminates tip stalls. Like the full size gliders, you can add differential throw to the ailerons. They should go up at least 25% more than they go down. You can mix this in, or simply move the servo horns forward so the geometry will create the diff throw. The higher the aspect ratio the more diff throw you need. Any time you see the tail drop in a turn, using ailerons only, you have adverse yaw. The aspect ratio is the wing cord (width) divided into the span. So a standard wing is usually 8:1. This glider is probably 16-20:1. Any thing over 10:1 will have some adverse yaw. The airfoil and dhedral make a difference too. Higher lift= more yaw, so does less dihedral. If this makes sense, add in some differential and work with the rudder, you'll get it down.

Standart wires for servos, works with all receivers.
There are no battery included as well as charger.

Bought for my wife as first rc plane. First impressions good. With 3s/2200 need to cut the foam inside fuselage a bit, no big deal. Flying weight with such battery is 1050g. probably best solution is to use 1600/3s packs. After 15 minutes of flying (3/4 of flight time full throttle) battery recharged with 1450mAh. I'm thinking of cutting some air inlets for cooling motor. After my style of flying it was pretty hot. It is advisable to use ailerons as well as airbrakes in order to reduce altitude od approach without increasing speed. All in all quite good glider.
