I can not see any reason why not. The input voltage is 8v to 13v. Many have done mods with these. A separate is the most popular. That way you can disable it when not needed. (Ie: inside or dull day).
Poor quality of soldering causes several problems with this Backlight Kit. In my case: First of all red wire (soldered to LED) has falled off just right after I extracted Backlight Kit from plastic sachet. So I needed to solder it back. Further after installation in strong accordance with instruction it 'burned' always independently of the power switch on my Turnigy 9X. After looking into 'discussion' and 'reviews' section on the hobbyking web-site I was very surprised and happy that my Turnigy 9X is still working without 'smoke', 'short circuit' and death of the transmitter elements. I needed just to cut the shrink on the kit and to scratch/solder all the unsafe contacts on the plug board. So I don't recommend this kit anyone who don't wish to take the risk of his transmitter death!
In my case the solution was: to cut the shrink tube on the plug board and to scratch/solder all the unsafe contacts. After these manipulations the backlight started working right.
whats a good way to secure this backlight during installation? it slides about when placing the circuit board over it before the foam pad has a chance to secure it in place.
do i glue it to the foam pad or tape it what?
I connected Turnigy 9X LCD Backlight Kit. The scheme I didn't change, all "from packing". But here miracle! Illumination BURNS at switched off and dies away at inclusion. Contacts I rechecked - I called back, all of norms. And, by the way, after installation of illumination the beeper ceased to work. In general.
There are thoughts at whom on the matter?
*NewToHobbyKing: beats me, but that would be a nice service gesture for sure. frankly, i would pay a little more for these LEDs too if they would update the electronics just a tweek or two. the smartiepartz board circuits in fact compensates for that lack. 5.00usd for the LED, i'm not going to nit pick it. i bit my fault for *not* inserting a resistor prior to testing them. they are putting some mods into the 9x, so i'll wait and see what the next version has stock.

no, you don't need it to fly. i put the smartiepartz board in and thought i'd put the LED into just for kicks.
i didn't expect both LEDs to burn out just to quickly test them. sure, LEDs need a resistor on them but a quick test rendered these two useless.
i'd like the RXR but i'm not going to spend the money on it since i have this one and for now it works. *-)
I have a JR DSX9 (9.6V) and can't find any info on using this as a retrofit in to a DSX9. Been told it can be done? Does anyone have any knowledge of success. Cheers. HOBBYKING, a lot of DSX's out there with out backlights. Maybe your supplier would be able to cash in on this.Cheers

I should add, the resistor swap method I mentioned before might not be for everyone. The resistor in question is of the surface mount type. Working with surface mount components requires some pretty solid soldering skills. If it's still something you'd like to try, I'd highly recommend practicing on some old electronics first.
just installed blue backlight to my new turnigy 9x, works ok.? i have read a lot of comments, it shows up blue and looks good inside, but when i take it outside, my display goes back to green, but maybe a bit brighter. i have removed the white protective layer from 1x side of blue backlight, and faced that towards display. am i expecting to much from this install,? or should it be brighter, and still be showing blue when i am outside? thanks
I have the blue one as well, and under sunlight, you can tell it's lit, but yeah, it's not that bright. Also, depending on how fresh your batteries are will effect the brightness as well. The green you're seeing is just the color of the LCD that's used in the 9x. I've read on the openrc forums of some people swapping out the 470ohm resistor, that's in line with the LEDs under the shrink wrap, for another value to increase the brightness. I never had the need to do this myself, as I feel that the brightness is enough for me, so I really can't advise on what value resistor you should use, but it is a thought. :D
i managed to somehow now have two backlights that don't work. i don't know whether to order another set or screw it.
these things that sensitive?
smartiparts lists to cut the wires so i did, put power to them to insure which side lights up, presto, notta. they lit for a second, then poof.
these things fixable or SOoL?
Mr2OiR I am being temped to fit one of these. But reading your problems I think I will just wait till I can upgrade to 9XR. So I can read the screen as is, so do you really need it to fly?
*Alistair, i put continuity check across smd resister. the backlight lit up.
i cut the Red & Black wires close to the tiny circuit board that has the smd resister as per smartieparts instructions on the backlight i installed into the TH-9x. i spliced a connector to the two red & black wires to connect to the smartieparts board. continuity is ok on smartieparts board connection but not via the two wires to the back light. does that resister "have" to stay with this backlight?
i have two a green and blue one. just installed the green into a FS TH-9x. the backlight doesn't come on.
i put 9V to the other one that isn't installed to test it and i don't see it turning on.
shouldn't it turn on with 9v? or should i up it to 11V?
Check for continuity across the smd resistor. One of the ones I recieved had a bad solder on the resistor. You can put power to the other side of the resistor but only for a split second to see if it lights. If you leave it powered for too long the LED will fail
This back light is rated for 8-13V 6 volts may be a bit to weak for this unit. Also the connector may be different for your tx. If your mechanically inclined I'd say give it a shot however, due to the low voltage of your tx, it may not work even if you can splice it in the your system.
No...Turn your tx on, then the backlight is on. Turn it off, the backlight goes off. If you're asking if it's on a timer, then the answer is no, unless you attach a separate on/off switch, such as your gear switch, or one that you install yourself.
incorrect information Current Draw: 60~90mA. real Current Draw is 5-7mA. You can increase the brightness, by reducing resistance. without raising the consumption...
Gwcphoto maybe I am wrong. Maybe HobbyKing has changed. I see a buddy code below, that has been there almost 2 weeks. It is almost expired (only last 2 weeks). So we will see! Still consider posting it on the forum too!
Fitted as per instructions.... naaada, powered at 9v via prof benchtop power supply... naaada. CS informed via chat MUST be returned. To be honest, sorta understand why as we all know there are people about that try to get "something for nothing" claiming DOA on perfectly functioning goods. Just a bit of a ***mer really.
Yeah!!! Now my 9X has a display backlight!! *LOVE*

Ordered one :) Thanks Hobbyking!!! But I think it'll be better to make it white color instead blue. Readability on a white background much better. Maybe you will make a better and faster LCD for replace for our Turnigy 9x, because original is so sllloooowwww...
Got my backlight and installed, it quite bright and not hard to install in to the TX. Carefull with wrong side when you install because the other side is not really bright. One more thing if you want to turn the light of when flying, mod a toggle switch is the best way.
