Hobbyking Bixler v1.1 EPO 1400mm (KIT)

Hobbyking Bixler v1.1 EPO 1400mm (KIT)
Hobbyking Bixler v1.1 EPO 1400mm (KIT)

Looking for the perfect trainer? or an in-expensive FPV platform? Maybe you are a club pilot looking for something you can just pull out of the car and fly on one of those lazy Sunday afternoons? The Hobbyking Bixler ticks all of these boxes and more!

Stop Press!!

Allow us to introduce the Bixler V1.1 with a myriad of improvements over the original Bixler.
Our v1.1 features relocated elevator and rudder servos, now closer to the tail and accessible via a magnetic hatch on the underside of the fuselage. Why? you may ask - This allows much more usable space inside the front section of the fuselage, something that FPV'ers are going to thank us for! We have also updated the included hardware to include better quality components, such as the new 4 bolt control horns on all surfaces. We also include 2 different propellers, one for high speed and the other for carrying heavier payloads.
You - our customers spoke, we listened! The end result is the Bixler V1.1!

Whatever you are looking for, the Bixler has it covered, also included is a color instruction booklet, this version being 'kit only' the manual acts as a guide to the installation of your own choice of equipment.

Showing off with Bixler FPV early morning flight and Crashed Hard! The only thing that broke was the motor mount"The wood one" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm-eRPMTDGc

The servos in the fuselage look like the servo arms will hit each other when they move. I haven't glued them in yet - but they will hit or miss each other by 1mm. Is this normal - what should i do? I am using HXT 500s.

Is there a part-list for the Bixler?
 erivelton 19 points
It seems not, there is a doubt whether the parties can serve bixler 2

hello, what type of propeller is the stock propeller which is mounted by delivery ? the second one isnt good for fpv, its slow without powder. i lost the original one.

try this...apc 5x5 propeller

2620-1900kv Brushless Outrunner (Required) I can't find this outrunner in the US Wharehouse. What can I use?

Use a 2826-6 2200kV (from Turnigy) So much fun for little money! :) (6*4 prop is also reccomended)

Got this kit the other day. The two halves of the fuselage are glued together only in some spots - its not solid, almost just spot glued. Is this normal for a kit? Should i pull the halves apart and re-glue them?
 c.cube 41 points
Mine came seperated, I would cut it open and re-glue back together with epoxy or something like that
 Rexy03 1061 points
seems to be hit and miss, some are glued, some are not, some only half glued
Michael  28 points - 4/24/2013

Yeah...after looking at many youtube videos and rc group forums it's now more than obvious that the thrust angle/vector of the motor mount that comes with this kit is way out and that it should be pointing to the cg of the plane, the included mount points to the nose causing the plane to nose down. Nothing like having a brand new plane smash into the ground over a factory defect! The other issue is that the screws for mounting the wings are too short, tried many hardware stores to find replacements to no avail.
 zedooo 171 points
It's not a factory defect, it's ment to be that way. You have to watch when you're taking off, don't use full throttle because the plane will go down because it has NO speed when it's taking off :) The screws are too short and that's a fact :)
Michael  28 points - 4/24/2013

I've just finished a build on this plane, just keep in mind that the elevator and rudder control rods may be reversed, mine were which gave me problems attaching the elevator (threading was too far out and had to cut the rod and mount linkage with heat shrink tube and ca). I bought this airframe to mount a go pro white with the diy cam mount and maidened it today...had it perfectly balanced at 71mm from the leading edge and she nosed over at about 10 feet and smashed straight into the ground (1/2 throttle). I'm running a GH 2550kv/50a esc and am now thinking that this airframe can't handle that kind of thrust or the thrust angle that the wooden mount this comes with cannot align properly to the cg of the airframe (I tried). I've been flying rc now for the past 5 years and thought that the thrust vector would be too aggresive to point to the cg...can anyone clarify? Spent alot of time building and reinforcing this plane.
milob40  8 points - 4/22/2013

 * *is the motor supposed to be installed on a slight angle? the mount does not seem to fit into plane on a slight angle, being a pusher type would the angle be left or right, the instructions that come with this is plug and play (no info on motor fitting or servo fitment so pretty much useless
 Shobbi 3 points
Milob40: mine was also installed with a slight angle, and looked more closed to beeing right aligned. But i had no issue flying it. Great performance. Just put a bigger prop on it, and you can have great fun with FPV. I tried with GoPro 3, and got solid and stable flight.

Since I had not purchase directly by myself thio one but via my friend, I cannot write a review on review tab. So here it is: Well what to say, for that price, it really is an excellent model. But it has it's minor flaws, which, for beginner might be a problem. Since I had Bixler v1.0 before, I can compare what is better and what is not. First, good thing is that servos are now inside the fuselage, I like that. Wings: good thing is that they are now fixed witth 2 screws, I dont't have to think how will I make them not fall apart in flight like with v1.0 (where I used magnets and velcro). Bad thing about mounting the wings is that rear screw is too short (and not only on my peace, several of my friends allso have purchased this one and had same problems). Carbon spar is better as it is than in old version as well. Fuselage: well it is OK , but when I have completed the plane, wings and rear horizontal stabilizer were not alligned, had to use hairdryer to warm up a little rear of fuselage and twist it a little bit until both wing and rear horizontal stabilizers were aligned. Too bad that there is no gap in fuselage on the bootom (like an v1.0) where you can epoxy 2mm carbon rod and make fuselage much stiffer. Motor mount: well this is big improvement, I like this one, much easier to access and replace the motor itself.

 Ral fRotten 1073 points
And how does it fly? what motor did you use? For $34 I think it's a bargain even after postage costs!
 varadero 7 points
It flies great, even on high winds. I used D2826-6 2200 KV motor and 40A www.link

Hello everyone. I have recently purchased a reciever ready Superfly X from Hobby People and the wing came off while it was in the air and dived nose in. Anyways they want $100 for the foamie kit. I was looking at Hobby King gliders and decided I wanted to get a Bixler or Bixler 2 but I am not sure if my electronics would work for this glider. I was thinking it will because they are pretty much the same plane just a different motor etc. anyways these are the specs on my Super Fly X from Hobby people: •* High-Performance 4-Channel Elevator, Aileron, Rudder and Throttle Control •* Includes 2630 Size 1050kV Brushless Motor •* Includes 4-Blade Propeller •* Includes 11.1 Volt 20 Amp Brushless ESC •* Includes Four Installed Micro Servos And the Bixler 2 requires: PS: I dont need flaps. 1 x 26~28 Size 1300kv Brushless Motor 1 x 20~30A ESC 4~5 Channel Transmitter and Reciever 1800mAh~2200mAh 3s Lipoly Battery 4 x 9g Servo for Ailerons, Elevator and Rudder 2 x 9g Servo For Flaps (Optional) 1 x Servo Reverser if using optional flaps with non-computer radio and the Bixler 1.1 requires: 4 Channel Radio (Tx/Rx) 1300mAh 3s Lipoly Battery 2620 Brushless Outrunner (Required) 20A ESC w/BEC (Required) 4 x 9g Servo (Required) I'm really thinking my electronics would work for either one but can anybody tell me which would be best and would my motor fit in the mount of the Hobby King kits. Thank you in advance!
 Nicholas Leigh 26 points
You can use your 20amp esc and motor aswell but I would advise on getting the recommended kv motor for easier hand launches and it's always a bonus having that extra bit of umph. You esc is 11.1v so it would be ok on the recommended 3s lipo for the bixler. What battery do you have and If you want more flight time I would get a 2200mAh 3s 25-30c or something similar and also ditch the 4blade prop and use the prop included. If you decide to buy another motor check the recommended esc in the specs. Also have you thought about the axn CloudFly your stuff from your old plane should go straight on that or just buy the pnp kit cheap enough and comes with everything. Hope this helps and if possible please award credit for help
 Ral fRotten 1073 points
Your 1050kv motor is too slow for a bixler, people complain the standard motor on bixler2 is under powered, Bixlers need something around 2000kv because you can only go as large as a 7inch propeller, you could use a AXN replacement motor from hobbyking there about $8 and 1800kv 180watts, PRODUCT ID: AXN-2208-2150, that would allow you to use your own esc, etc. hope that helps.
 Ral fRotten 1073 points
oops the axn motor is 2150kv 180watts perfect for a bixler.
 Nicholas Leigh 26 points
I agree with Ral fRotten def the motor to have for the bixler quite a speedy little motor aswel I have a axn cloud fly and it has plenty of umph
Luis  2 points - 4/7/2013

What is a good replacement motor for the Bix? Motor Mount?
 TaterTotDW 197 points
A lot of people like the Turnigy D2826-6 2200kV motor. There is an upgraded motor mount for this available in the international warehouse.
Sethe  44 points - 4/2/2013

v1 and v2 is easier for the noobie. I recommend v2. coz v2 have bigger wingspan . ı* guess more stable
 CrashAce 797 points
It really depends on what you want. v2 for fpv and higher payloads and longer flight times. v1.1 for increased speed range and better maneuverability. flight test did a good comparison of the two.
 Ral fRotten 1073 points
V2 has much bigger ailerons 31cm long, v1 has 23cm long ailerons, I think V2 rolls faster, V1 looses a lot of height when doing a roll over if you don't use the elevator. I like them both.
freefallin  11 points - 4/2/2013

Comparing between Bixler V1.1 and Bixler 2, which one is easier to fly, for the noobie ?
 Sethe 44 points
v1 and v2 is easier for the noobie. I recommend v2. coz v2 have bigger wingspan . ı** guess more stable
 zedooo 171 points
If you are looking at stock planes, the V1.1 is easier to fly because the Bixler 2 has a much weaker motor!

HK Bixler flight over Nazaré*

Hi this is my first post. I have a Bixler v1 which has been injured, some body damage. Is the later model ok to buy just as a shell and transfer the mechanical parts. Not sure if they fit the second model? Thanks for any help. Cheers bergs
 Ibrahim2012 284 points
well, I would suggest you to get this kit SKU: HK-SS-KIT. and install your electronics.
 martin 1 points
yes everything should fit perfectly .
 mikec@aloha.net 220 points
bergs, the old bixler had problems like the weak spar and the terrible horns and clevises. you can transfer your hardware and electronics to the new one. it will fit. and the price is right.
 bergs5 2 points
Thanks fellas I now feel I can buy the later shell without any problems. Thanks bergs5

Does anyone know the dimensions of the motor mount hole? I want to use the 'Small Parts cnc v1 Bixler motor mount' which has Dimensions: I.D. = 1.01" / O.D. = 1.11" / Length: 1.375"? Will it fit? Or has the motor hole size changed form the Bixler 1 to the v1.1?
 Sethe 44 points
you can use Small Parts cnc v1 Bixler motor mount. perfectly fit to hole

Hi...what do you think of opening a small door on the plane to adjust the FPV equipment, advise?
 zedooo 171 points
Why not? just use a sharp (new) scalpel and make a rectangle "door". Hinge it up with sticky tape or magnets and voila!
 guigs88 1 points
But if I do the door, this could disrupt the flight?
 zedooo 171 points
Don't make them too big and close them after you've cut them!
 mikec@aloha.net 220 points
guigys, anything you do can disrupt the flight of any plane to a degree. the little door you want to install will be fine. check the cg and make trim adjustments for your flight after the install.
 zedooo 171 points
you must be joking man! the HTX900's are the worst servos EVER!
 mikec@aloha.net 220 points
there are better ones digital and metal gears costing more like the HS-65MG which costs $36. i bought and used a total of 20 hxt 900 servos for the phoenix 2000, bixler, slow sticks, axn floater jet and more. not one failure. i'm sure there are some that won't work as with anything else. but these work and i'd rather pay $3 anyday the $36.
guigs88  1 points - 3/18/2013

Hi!. I bought the HXT900 servo 9g / 1.6kg, but realized he did not fit properly on the wing. Is that right? I need to make adjustments on the wing?
 zedooo 171 points
How do you think it did not fit? Is it too big to go inside or? If it is, just cut it out a bit with a scalpel and push it in.
 guigs88 1 points
The shape of the hole is different, I think I'll have to make an adjustment.
 zedooo 171 points
It's not a problem if it's not a perfect fit. Hot glue it in!
 mikec@aloha.net 220 points
the hxt900s will fit only if you cut or dremel the opening. this isn't hard to do. the 900s will do well. i'm using these servos and they are a workhorse and very reliable even up to when it starts buzzing.

Beautiful desing! Reminds me the AXN-Floater jet....
It?s as stable as axn surely, and so easy to control as well.
Beginners, here is your Best First plane, I ensure you will love it.
This is the Kit version so, you need to buy motor, a 20A ESC, 4 9grams servos, and I suggest 11.1v, 2200mAh battery
Enjoy this big, and beautiful plane.
Thanks HK again!

I just flew the plane yesterday. It flies like a dream. I flew about an hour with 2200mah 3s and only hat to charge 950mah. I flew at a slope, so its definitely great for slope flying. Remove the rings in front of the nose, then you can use 2200mah instead of 1300. My components are: Servos: 4xHXT900 ESC: Intel 20A brushless Motor: TR 28-26 16A 1900Kv Brushless Outrunner Prop: Graupner Slowfly 6,3x3 Perfect setup i guess. You have enough power to climb vertically, but save battery at the same time. Will test thermals and FPV next. Plane has lots of space to add lots of FPV stuff. My Flying weight is 675g, with FPV it will be ~850g, will review again if plane flies as well with ~850g.

For those whose had problem with the plane turning to the right. Here is a solution to that problem. Just use the regular propeller and reverse the motor wire. Don't use the pusher propeller. This is has something to do with the torque roll. So using the regular propeller shift the torque roll to the left and will balance the plane. Hope this make sense. I have the same problem until I changed the propeller and the problem go away. Happy flying
