Durafly™ SuperMarine Spitfire 1.4m 5Ch XL-EPO (USA Warehouse)

The Durafly SuperMarine Spitfire 1.4M is a large scale, high quality EPO model, and includes steerable tail wheel, Shock Absorbing Retractable Landing Gear.
Due in part to its large size, the SuperMarine Spitfire has excellent flight characteristics making it a great plane for beginners & intermediate pilots. Included is 6 servos, 11x7E propeller, and a large high quality 35 series outrunner.
The Durafly SuperMarine Spitfire will arrive 95% RTF, leaving only the tail pieces and wing to be screwed into place. Assembly time is around 15 minutes.

Just include your own Rx, ESC and a battery to be ready to fly.
Note: Tail servos have been upgraded to heavy duty 12g versions to prevent servo failure on hard landings due to the large tail control surfaces.

*Note: This model has a wingspan of 1.4m, it is noticeably larger than a normal foam plane. Due to the Spitfires eliptical wing it has a tendancy to tipstall, however Durafly designers have created the model with 2 degrees of wing-tip washout to help prevent this phenomenon.

It's over a year since I've seen this for sale from the International Warehouse. 8^( I'm in the UK, it's no use to me being in the USA Warehouse. Is HobbyKing EVER going to offer it again from Hong Kong or Germany?
 David 3 points
Cmldistribution have the very similar FMS 1400 span Spitfire at 215 GBP inc delivery, over twice as much as this one so if HK sent a container full of these to Germany they would sell like hot cakes.

Yes. Thanks for that. PARTYjohn69/JBC does a good comparison video on YT. I've seen FMSs for £*176 in the UK. It's difficult to understand why HK don't make this available to UK/Europe, they did do early last year then stopped. Odd ...

6 thumbs up!
I give this 4 stars for the following reasons:
The shipping box was really smashed up - wing was damaged
Needs a reversing Y-Harness in order for retracts to work properly
Plastic under-wing mount for the left radiator was never installed/missing
Instructions left many details out/unclear in areas
The nice woman in the last picture makes the plane look HUGE
Battery hatch magnets glued sloppily, consequently it was glued to the plain (mild damage

damage trying to get the hatch OFF the plane)
Small gap where Rudder section installs to main body/fuselage

All that being said - I do really like this aircraft. There are many nice details about this:
Completely hidden controls - no exposed linkage!
Good paintjob
The stickers are good
Nice detail on the foam
It is a nice sized aircraft
The completed Spitfire looks really nice

Some notes
The retracts work really well - just ensure that the servo travel is enough to lock them in place (collapsing/excess movement either open or closed indicates the servo hasn't got them into the locked position).
The spinner does not mount/balance very well - at least not from what I could infer from the one picture, and no details. What I found works: Do not use the washer behind the plastic backplate - put the - continued -

plastic backplate on the motor, then the prop, washer, and nut - balances fine!
Get a couple of servo extension cables - this will make removing/installing the wings MUCH easier - otherwise its a bit of a tight fit.
CG appears to be good right at about 90mm from the leading edge of the wing.

Overall - I would recommend this plane - for the price/fun factor, looks, flying ability, and feature set - a great overall deal. :)

Flew her for the first time today. Wow she flys great. Retracts servos one goes up one goes down. Had to fix that part. Other than that it is a flyer. I am running a 2650 3c 25c and get around seven minutes on that. On the fifth flight I remove the motor hood and the wing scoops. Man did it haul after that. But on that flight it striped the elevator servo, got it down without to much damage, replaced it with a metal geared servo. Fun plane.
