Turnigy CA80-80 Brushless Outrunner (50~80cc Eq)

Designed as a 50 to 80cc gas engine replacement, this motor is a direct bolt in for 17~30lb Sport, Scale and 3D planes .
A perfect size motor for 3D flight up to 20lbs.
The motor is very well built with strong mounts, end bell and a concentric double bearings at the rear to support large propellers and rotating can, especially during hard 3D flight.

This motor is very well engineered and of the highest quality.
The factory can produce only a limited number of these motors per month due to the increased time in balancing and machining such a large object.

Remove able propeller mount? I have a space 120mm I can use. If I shorten the drive shaft 30mm and remove the piece the propeller sits on it would fit. It looks like the part between the can and prop isn't removable. Could it be cut off or is it a structural load bearing piece?
 wellmanite 188 points
You should be able to cut it off, there are grub screws holding the can/hub to the shaft. You should be able to remove the can and cut the drive hub off.

Hello I have this Motor installed in my SebArt 2,2m with a 120A ESC, a 25x12 Metts, and 10s 5000mah LiPO. Very nice motor with a plenty of Power. Im under 100A and it is so quiet at full throttel. I can fly about 7min in hard 3D. But one thing is bad: As this ESC come to me befor 2 month it running very bad. So I took it apart and found a paper clip between the magnets! A paper clip?! What is the mean? This could have been a crash. So most everything cleared out. Then it is the best engine Thanks HK
 wellmanite 188 points
The ESC or the motor had a paperclip? I can see you working on the plane and a paperclip falling inside the motor. Always chech to see if a screw or something gets sucked inside.
 Edge5403D 33 points
The Motor habethe Paperclip . And the Paperclip was Insider rhere aß* He comes our of the Box. IT wasn"t my Paperclip!

Can some one tell me wich is the more appropriate HV ESC for 12 s Lipo on my BIG 3,20 M CESSNA....I wanto convert electric ...i had a DLE 55 before on it ...
 wellmanite 188 points
Turnigy dlux 250A HV 14s 60v ESC
 giosic 138 points
Something less ? i suppose i will be not over 60 -65 amps with a 22x10 Metz prop....
 Ronn 5 points
How about TURNIGY Sentilon 100A HV? But then again, if you don't need that much amps, why not get a smaller motor?
 wellmanite 188 points
Trust me it will be over 90amps, so you will want a 120A-150A ESC

Hi I'm trying to build an electric scooter and I'm kind of new to this electric motor stuff I was wondering how this motor compares to the Rotomax 50cc in power? I noticed this product doesnt list Watts or Current, can someone please help?

ok i have settled on tricopter design with 6 motors and escs incase one fails. can someone please help me with esc selection? I will be using 6 of these motors. Is there another website that offers better escs? are the jeti esc better? ...thank you....
 wellmanite 188 points
I don't have much experience with Jeti escs but I think they might be a better choice, because HK has made new ESCs that have little or no customer testing yet. As for another site with big ESCs, I have searched and can't find any other. I plan on making one next year. The ESC will need to handle atleast 150A.
gabe  2 points - 1/25/2013

Hi guys Ill cut to the point I want to build a Quad or tri copter that lifts at least 50 - 75 lbs and and fly as long as possible. My biggest question is are the motors and escs on this site worth buying? I ask because I will be mounting some pricey equipment on the unit and firing it and I just dont want it to fall out of the sky because I bought ****py components! Any help would be greatly app. My budget is 13,000 thanks.
 wellmanite 188 points
The motors are very good and reliable. Many times I have thought of doing what you want to do but I don't have the money. The only problem would be the ESCs. The big ones are new and have very little testing. A quad should be much less than $13000. This motor could probably lift up to 25-30lbs. You might want to use a bigger motor. As for batteries, Use Zippy 6s 8000mah.

How does this motor compare to the Turnigy 80-100 series motors?
stearman  12 points - 12/30/2012

So are we all in agreement that this motor can handle 12s?
 stearman 12 points
I hope this motor will operate on a k force 120 amp esc. I choose this esc because if it's anti-spark feature. I was running a 60 series Turnigy outrunner coupled to a 100 amp Sentinel esc withtwo 5000 mah 5s batteries in parrell until this system w!ent down based on a spark when I hooked the batteries to the esc. Anyone experience this before. Costly lesson.
 wellmanite 188 points
It should handle 14s. I wouldn't trust that ESC very mush, for some reason I decided not to use that one. I think the Yep 120A would be better, and you can make your own anti spark system if it doesn't have one.
 stearman 12 points
Ok on the Yep esc. The anti spark is a necessary item when working with these high cell count batteries? Your comments please.
 stearman 12 points
Just read specs on Yep 120. Sweet. What can you tell me about timing for this motor mated to the Yep esc. 0 degrees to 30 degrees. Hmmmmmm. Thx
 wellmanite 188 points
I don't know much about anti sparking, but if you make a second smaller positive battery wire with a resistor in it, then connect that wire to the battery after the black and before the main red wire. This allows some time for the capacitors to charge. I would recommend timing in the 0-15degree range.
 wellmanite 188 points
A 100 ohm resistor sould work well. I was going to use the Yep 120 but I found a 16s 200A esc on alibaba.
Ironeagle  22 points - 12/29/2012

Hi all, Is this motor compatible with this ESC : "Turnigy Fatboy V2 300A ESC 4~15S - (OPTO)" ? (I will use this motor with a 23x10 4 blades prop.) I thank you in advance IronEagle
 wellmanite 188 points
It should be a great ESC for this motor, but you should wait to see if the reviews say it works, the last one didn't.
wellmanite  188 points - 12/28/2012

Do not be suprized to see a different motor, they came out with a new version with a different front design and it is black. (see the link below for the picture)

Sorry i referring to already!
BKMWD  1 points - 12/1/2012

Yes i can confirm it. I've alreddy bought it. It takes a bit time to ship to Germany but now it's there. I'd measured 8mm. I used a caliper to measure.
kellymac  19 points - 11/20/2012

Can anyone confirm that the shaft is indeed 8mm and not 10mm. Thanks
gromuluss  218 points - 10/26/2012

apparently the 200 amp esc from turnagy ( only one that i can find on hk) wont work with this motor So what one will?
hamza  25 points - 7/8/2012

it looks a great motor i hope it is available in german warehouse soon, that you think gays?
 jebus 17 points
i hope so to gay:D sry could'nt resist guys:)
 gromuluss 218 points
I think this motor is to much RPM for gays It might hurt a bit to much for pleasure.

WHAT KIND OF ESC CAN I USE WITH THIS ENGINE AND WHAT BEC ALSO IF I USE 12S LIPO?? THANKS FOR YOUR ANSWER
 H-KING_SCOTT 5160 points
Use a seperate BEC/Regulator, it will run 12s, ESC will depend on intended prop size but this should do for most www.link

Why HK put this motor under Multirotor Sub-section? is this for real? anyone use this on QuadCopter?
 PeteDee 187 points
Yes hilarious, I want some of these in a quad......
 Choppy 162 points
I agree, funny! Now I want to see if anyone makes pusher props suitable for this motor
 mike.t.ward 78 points
it would be good for the beer lift comp you could lift alot with 4 of these.
 Choppy 162 points
Ah, just realized that we're getting greedy with a quad, a tri would be just as good and you don't need a pusher prop:) did someone say theres 12kg thrust each from these?
Serij  9 points - 5/3/2012

can the shaft in this type of motor be mounted to exit on the same side as the wires?
scatsob  38 points - 4/29/2012

Any chance this will come back in stock again? Is it being discontinued?
rexie  16 points - 1/15/2012

Does anybody has an idea how to mount a spinner on that motor?
 H-KING_SCOTT 5160 points
You need to drill 4 holes to match the prop pattern.
 rexie 16 points
Thanks Scott, but I have no idea how to mount the spinner cap. Normally it is mounted by a long screw going from the top of the cap to some windings in the middle of the shaft. This "hole" in the shaft isnt there on this ca80-80. I am very happy about any hints.

Hi guys.
Just bought this motor, and need a prop drill jig. Can anyone advise on what/where to buy?
Thanks,
Petter
 chraptor 8 points
Hi Petter, prop holes are the same as DA50. just take care that the central hole is 8mm not 10. Easy to fix by cutting a small piece in a aluminum tube 10/8 mm. as adapter.

Have you received this motor yet and have you fired it up yet? If so how do you like it and how does it run? I am considering for a 1/5 scale project.

Anyone think that 2 of these can power a small 8' boat with a human inside on 12s 40aH running two 75mm submerged props?

The boat is made out of styrofoam and weighs < 50lbs batteries are < 40 lbs and the driver would be about 150lbs
 Fidelity 392 points
It's designed for planes...which means it probably likes lots of air passing by. For your application, you might need to watch for cooling. As for 75mm props, that size worked well on Zenoah 26cc engines, so you might be ok. Sounds like a fun project!!!
Richard  8 points - 10/14/2010

could this motor be used to power a boat? or would the windings need to be changed? I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to this sort of thing

Wonderful designed engine. High quality. Will fly in an Hangar 9 Carden Edition Yak 54 with 10 or 12 Lipos. Propsize about 24x8" to 25x10". The power should be enough for 3D flying. Weight of plane about 6,5kg, thrust about 10-12 kg. I use 2 5S or 2 6S packsfrom Turnigy with 20C 5000 mah.

Hammermotor....

I have installed this motor in the RC guys 100 inch Cherokee 140, and it works great! I am using two Zippy 5800 mah 30C batteries and the Turnigy 160 amp esc, and I fly about 6 minutes, with at least 3 more minutes in reserve. It flies on half throttle, and performs better than I ever imagined it would. No one that sees it believes it is an electric plane, being so big. I am using a 20x14 APC prop, as that is all the ground clearance I have room for. I have over ten flights so far, and I strongly recommend this motor.
