J3 Cub - EP Old Timer (ARF)

J3 Cub - EP Old Timer (ARF)
J3 Cub - EP Old Timer (ARF)

Ready for some more Cub lovin? Here is a golden oldie we dug up out of the HobbyKing-rainy-day treasure chest!

This J3 Cub features a super simple 3 channel design and dihedral wing, Perfect for floating about on the breeze and whiling away the time on a Sunday afternoon. If your Grand father flew EP, he would have flown something like this and complained all afternoon that back in his day, he had to wait over night for his Ni-Cads to charge!

This "Vintage master piece" is designed for a traditional 380 size brushed motor (which just about any modeler should be able to dig up from their parts bin to keep the cost down!) or alternativley the Brushed motor mount can be removed making way for a brushless bell motor such as the Turnigy 2408-21 1400kv. You will be required to fashion your own spacer for the motor mount just like in the "good old days" of modeling.

You will require two inexpensive 9 grams servos, a Brushed or Brushless motor, ESC, 7.4v 2S lipoly battery and your own transmitter and receiver to finish this model. Scale fans will notice that the windows have been left blank allowing you to choose your own custom shade of black to finish the model.

This price wont last and a stroll down memory lane does not get any cheaper than this!

Somebody please: COG in MILLIMETRES. I have tried the 25% ish rule (33mm) up to 45mm and am sick of bending motor shafts. Comments on here seem to be anywhere between 25% and 70mm!!!Please somebody advise where YOU have personally (from experience, not a web based formula)found this plane to perform well. I have some prop saver mounts on order so will be using them for a while! Thanks
 Bank&Wank 15 points
25% is working well for me. I forget the exact numbers but you can do the math. Measure the wing and divide by four.... I'm running an 1800 3 cell mounted to the belly of the plane , About one quarter of an inch behind the front cowling. The point being that it takes a lot of weight out front to get the cog correct. I have videos on YouTube and there is a blog on RC groups going over setups for this plane. (Search banknwank on utube or j3 old timer on rc groups)
 Bank&Wank 15 points
measured cg location this morning...... 35-40 mm from leading edge. May be a tiny nose heavy, as thats how i like my planes. You can fine tune from there.

I bought this cub and ordered all the parts separately. I also bought the Hobbyking 6ch remote to fly this plane. However I am now having a problem getting any of my electronics to work, and I am unsure if this is because of the battery or my electronics. The battery I have is a Turnigy nano-tech 300mah 2S 35~70C Lipo Pack. Any Ideas what my problem could be?
 nilshv 1 points
Are you sure you have set the cable correctly into the reciver? If you insert the cable wrong way nothing will work.
Max  54 points - 4/20/2013

I need to purchase a motor for my cub, as it did fly only 2 meters and i broke the engine shaft ,all my fault hope you can help .Regards Max Gilbert. also i am still waiting for my orange transmitter to arive
 NewToHobbyKing 6377 points
Max you are talking to the members here! True HK Admin do look in now and then but mostly HK leaves it to the members. So with any item you are waiting for, please contact Live Cs. With your motor. Well it did not come with a motor so what did you use. It is rated for a 380 class park flier motor. I put a 2822 with 2200Kv in mine. With a 900mah 11.1v Lipo and 7 x 4 prop, it flies like a dream. You can take of on short grass, even with the small wheels.
swervyn  15 points - 4/18/2013

ok, so the suggested motor is a 1400kv running on 2s, is that a little underpowered? is my 1534kv motor on 3s overpowered? would like to hear your thoughts thanks
 NewToHobbyKing 6377 points
Swervyn both will work fine. This little plane is very forgiving. I put a 2822 with 2200Kv in mine. With a 900mah 11.1v Lipo and 7 x 4 prop, it flies like a dream. You can take of on short grass, even with the small wheels. Sure you can go too big but you can see the working range is vast.
Owen Milner  12 points - 4/15/2013

The recommended motor isn't stocked by the looks of it, what's a good in stock (aus) alternative?
 NewToHobbyKing 6377 points
Owen Milner as you can read above you has a large range to work with. I will have a look and say. So use D2822/14 Brushless Outrunner 1450kv (AUS Warehouse) (SKU: D2822-141450) or D2822/17 Brushless Outrunner 1100kv (AUS Warehouse) (SKU: D2208-17-1100) at the high end or FC 28-12 Brushless Outrunner 1534kv (AUS Warehouse) (SKU: FC2812) at the lower end!

my J3 Cub-EP Old Timer was crashed & broke the right wing in to two pieces.so can i use gorilla glue to fix it....??
 Martin 13 points
Not sure about gorilla glue but two part apoxy and clear tape will do the job put same amount of tape in same place on the other wing, have fun.

Waterlogged, I got the 99 points on my first ever answer. I have bought something and am now awaiting a promotion. Note that I look up to people like you and to you specifically. I will continue to participate in the forum, but only making a dime for answering a question seems pretty hard. I think it will be worth it since RC aviation is a very valuable hobby. With best regards, ~Joe

Joseph he will not hear you till I reply. Sorry about that. 14 after you first purchase you will be up dated. Also he hunts me and he does lie and I have tried to talk to him!

Although I wish I could say yes, I have never gotton the opportunity to own an RC plane. My knowledge comes from much research, and enjoyment of the hobby. I'm hoping that by answering these questions, I will get enough credits to get a plane from here. I have a camera on it's way to make some instructional videos also. You say I am still a standard user. How do I get a promotion? Do I have to pay? :(
 NewToHobbyKing 6377 points
Joseph I sadly would like to let you know, that as a standard user, you can not get credits for answers. Sorry. In fact you cannot even reply. So you need to buy something. Once you do you, will become a gold user. Then you can help.

Exactly the way you did it. Bought the bare minimum clevises, horns, hinges etc to make it as cheap as possible just so she could get on here and scam the forum. Never bought another thing since and only just joined she says and managed to get 3370 points already Gee most genuine Pro contributors manage 1500 to 2000 in 2 years except when people like this start playing around with your score. How long did it take you to get 99 points points Joseph. Gee your first question was just 9 days ago, that's pretty good for someone only using the forum for 9 days, 99 points
Joseph  129 points - 2/13/2013

Hi cwfsc! I have a couple of points that should help you. 1) Make sure when you are balancing your plane, you have your battery in your plane. Balancing should be done with the plane AS IF IT WERE READY TO FLY. If not, when you put in your extra components, the CoG will be changed. 2) Unless you have a manuel or other reliable source of reference, I would recommend balancing from 30%-33%. This will make for a safe, controllable experience, especially for a high wing. If you still see that your plane is tail-heavy, RESIST THE URGE TO TOSS IT IN THE AIR ANYWAYS *) You'll thank me later. You can move your battery closer to the aimed CG. This will make it so you don't have to put on more sticky-lead weights. Make sure you stick them on as far-back as possible, to reduce the amount of weight required to be added. Happy flying! -Joe
 NewToHobbyKing 6377 points
Very very good. So like the rest of us, have you owned one of these?

Hi, any idea where is the COG of this plane. I tried 25% from the front edge of the wing. It was a failure because the tail is far too heavy.
 NewToHobbyKing 6377 points
Cwfsc I will not waste space here because Joseph (above) has covered it pretty well. He cannot reply to your QUESTION because he is a Standard user still.
 cwfsc 66 points
"Interesting" response from Joseph. Thnak you. The plane is designed for in-runner motor. I used an old out-runner motor from my de-commissioned AXN Floater for this J3. The out-runner is much lighter. Even I added so much weight at the front, the tail was still too heavy. Hence, I removed my added CF from the rear (to reduce few g from the rear)* cut the battery compartment and pushed a Turnigy 1800 2S up to the front. My plane is flying well now. Regards
 NewToHobbyKing 6377 points
Well done. Yes I have use a Outrunner in my old J3 too. That motor has much more power than the one it came with. I also did something similar to mine, as you did. Mine has been on the Shelf for a few years. I should toss it, maybe one day.

This aircraft is 03 or 04 channels?
 Ricky 1 points
2 channels
 nsferreira 13 points
3 channels. Rudder, elevator and throttle. Ailerons can probably be fitted since they are marked in the wings.
 NewToHobbyKing 6377 points
I see why the confusion. This plane need 2 servo and 1 ESC. So it is a 3 channel plane.

good evening. how much would it cost if i order a complete set of oldtimer. Radio, servos, standard engine and propellers. thank you
 NewToHobbyKing 6377 points
Rudy that really does depend on what you want in the OLD time. So many parts fit. You need to wonder around the site and add to your carts, the parts you want.

what warehouse is this?
 NewToHobbyKing 6377 points
Please Levi do not credit me for this. It would get me in so much trouble with waterlogged. You are in the International Warehouse listing. This is the main one. Great prices but postage is a bit higher.
Ivica  3 points - 12/31/2012

Airplane, motor, esc, etc you can get for 60usd from HK warehousev without tx/rx and shipping.

Without the radio how many $$ would it take to get it airborn?
 Sally 659 points
Larry this is a question better for the FORUM. Go there and start a topic. This can be made flying a bit cheaper if you have some parts.
Ivica  3 points - 12/26/2012

Hello, is it good for beginner? 1.) what prop and motor for good slow flying? 2.) what battery for this model? I cant find with right dimension. 3.) if i stop controll, come it back to horizontal position? 4.) can it do STOL? What can i use wheels? 5.) it can landing to water? With what? 6.) how slow can fly? Please owners, send more videos with flying.
 Sally 659 points
Ivica so many questions. If you want answer try asking them one at a time! (3) This was my first plane and if she is going down, just letting go of the controls will not save her. (4) Please it is a Trainer. It is better hand launched. The wheel are small and unless you are taking off and landing on a hard surface, they will get stuck in the grass!!
 Ral fRotten 1076 points
Download a simulator from the net, FMS is a free RC simulator you can practice on so you don't destroy your new plane on the maiden flight. Then buy your trainer plane, my opinion anyway.

Prop and motor question? I have the old stock brushed setup from a Hobbyzone Super Cub. It has the gearbox as well. I was wondering if this would be a good match for this smaller plane? If not, I do have an Eflite 400 and 450 as well, but would imagine both of these could power this plane without wings. Any ideas?
 ron 66 points
HI BUD I HAVE HAD LOTS OF THE J3 Cub - EP Old Timer i would just use a towerpro bell outruner its only cheep £*4-£*5 and they work a treet on this plane
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
 Randyc2800 4 points
Thanks. I used what I had...an Eflite 400 with a 10x4.7 slow flyer. Thing has way too much prop torque and is hard to control. But hey, I figure if I can keep this thing from rekitting itself I can fly anything. :-) I am going to try a smaller faster prop and see if that helps. On the plus side, it truly has unlimited vertical!

Which motor i can use on this plane?
 noel 41 points
the turnigy 2408-21 motor is what i bought for this, its a 1400kv motor with the black casing, have not flown yet but there is a good pull on it for sure. please credit me if you found this useful

I have aan EMAX 2812(1500KV) and 8X4 prop. On power up on the ground the model wants to turn sharply left - engine torque I am told. Hard to take off if it keeps wanting to go left. Any suggestions? PK
 simmo24 87 points
if I remember correctly, that model doesn't have any , (sorry, not sure what you call it) right tilt on the motor mount, could that have something to do with it?

Hello,

I am needing help about this model. Please if you can help me.

1) First question is can I use the motor EMAX 2822 in this model ?

2) Second question is can I change this airplane to 4 channel putting aileron on it ?

Thank you very much
 waterlogged 2548 points
As long as you have a motor mount to suit I can't see any reason why you can't use that motor. You can make it as many channels as you tx and rx will allow. As long as you are ready to cut the ailerons and hinge them plus fit the servo and hardware, go for it. The only problem you might have is the aft strut getting in the way. You may have enough room for shorter ailerons or simply move the anchor point for the strut. That's the fun of this hobby, changing things to suit what you want.. Good luck.

Can it use 3s 1300mah? Thanks

space provided for battery compartment may be too small for that size battery without modification
 Polycapman 56 points

 Randyc2800 4 points
I use a 1300 3S. I cut out the battery box bottom so that the battery box goes all the way to the wing now. The battery stands vertically.
 James 1 points
There is a big space behind the motor, I cut away some of the foam between battery box and this space. 1000 3S then fits nicely through into this hole. It takes a bit of cutting (I use an old soldering iron), space should be big enough to fit a 1300 3S.

to use a Tower Pro 2408-21T need to purchase a prop adapter and prop? And which battery fits in the compartment of the aircraft without modification?
 daxon 19 points
You should purchase a prop adapter and a prop, as the included ones are a bit ***r quality. The battery compartment is small, but you can modify it without problems, really easily. I use a 3s turnigy 1000mah battery. cheers

 fearlessfoamie 26 points
minedidnt even proccess untill three months after i bought it
 waterlogged 2548 points
Oh what a load of rubbish. The only way something doesn't ship is if you bought and paid for it knowing it was out of stock. In fact HK stop you from paying for some items if there is any doubt of it coming back into stock. I think you exaggerate a lot. 3 months, sounds good doesn't it As for spitting the dummy over 7 days. You would have received a warning that the plane had to be picked up from the JIT warehouse then sent to the main warehouse and matched up with anything else you bought. One day to do the paperwork for JIT, anything up to 6 or 7 days at times to send it to the main warehouse and a few more days to pack it all up. I'd say you're complaining way too soon. Go to somewhere else faster in China and pay double or buy from your home country and pay triple.

don't give Kellyann credits, they are Indian scammer taking money away from real HK customers.

1 thumbs up!
Model arrived with a cracked fuselage which I had to reglue before starting assembly - this is why I gave quality as 2 stars, otherwise it would be 3 stars.

Assembly was fairly straightforward and there were no problems. Landing gear, wing struts and tail pieces seem to be decently designed and made.

The centre of gravity is 25pcnt back from the front edge of the wing - measure for yourself and find that spot, because with a 24g Hextronik 1700kv outrunner and Flightmax 1000mAh 3-cell lipo placed underneath the battery compartment and landing gear the CG is still not forward enough. I would suggest cutting a hole in the forward bulkhead of the battery compartment and pushing your lipo all the way forward to get the right CG.

All up, a decent 3-ch plane well suited to learners... just so long as they have someone to set it up properly for them.

Cheers - boingk

This is the first "foamie" I have ever built. I have been a scratch builder for over 50 years using real engines. I have to say that this little plane is a quality piece, I am amazed, it took me a while to put it together and do the wiring (old dog - new trick) I have not flown it yet but am looking forward to later this week. I will post flight info as soon as available. To say I am impressed is an understatement and it seems to me a great value as well.
