PPact, get a talon 90a esc

I fitted this motor to my 600 and left the turnigy 85 amp esc there. I started the hover and all was fine then 1 min later the esc caught fire. Melted down to a lump. Is this because of the size of esc or just one of those things. It was working fine for many flights with the turnigy typhoon motor. Cheers

Anyone know what is a normal operating temp for this motor (1100kv)?

I have this motor installed in my 550 with the follow setup

Main Blades –* 520mm
ESC - 80a
Motor- 1100kv (t600)
Pinion - 16t
Timing - 18deg
PWM - 8kHz
Flight time - 6mins basic hover & slow fig. 8's
ID1 - Flat 90% curve

Outside temp - 24c / 75F
Temps right after flight
ESC - 42c / 107F
Motor internal - 56c / 132F
Middle of Lipo - 30c / 86F

Lipo T.Voltage = 23.17v

I really wonder if the motor is running a little too hot or not.

Sorry this is the 1100kv version. The heat developed at current (I) 50 amps is 62.5 watts. The 880kv version is 45 watts and the 1400 kv version is a cool 17.5 watts. Note heat is not a problem unless you have no cooling system !!!
rhoan  2 points - 3/2/2013

Understanding heating in dc motors. Heat comes from energy wasted in motor's internal resistance. To calculate us formula Power = I squared r ( I x I x r) For this motor at 50 amps with r = 7mOhm we get 50 x 50 x 0.007 = 17.5 watts. For same motor configured for 880kv* r = 18mOhms so heating power at 50 amps is 50 x 50 x 0.018 = 45 watts therefore hotter running. The 1100kv version r = 25mOhms so heating is a whopping 62.5 watts. Run calculation with 100 amps is heating is 250 watts. Choose motor wisely !!!

I'd like to use this motor in my HK-550GT. I've read that in 600 frame you have to modify it a bit, but, in 550 frame? Are the 550 and 600 frames identical in size? HK support people recommended me this motor, but didn't say anything about modifying the frame, what do you think? I appreciate your answer! Thank you.
 evltoy 28 points
I have fitted this motor to my HK550 and needed to modify (cut) the frame like on the 600.

I just installed this in my hk550gt. The piece of carbon fiber that runs from front to rear on the side frames where the motor mounts have to be cut out. Do it with a dremel tool. You can't even tell that the frame was cut. It comes out real nice.
 LuckAr 10 points
Thanks to both. Can you tell your experience using this motor in your HK-550. What's your configuration (ESC, Main Blades, Battery, servos, etc.)?
 evltoy 28 points
I have yet to fly my 550 as I'm still building it.
Here is my setup so far for sports flying
HK550 Fly bar setup
T600-1100 - (1100kv)
3x TURNIGY 1258TG DIGITAL cyclic servos
1x Futaba BLS251 (tail servo)
Align step down Regulator for tail servo (5.1v)
Hobbyking YEP 80A (2~6S) SBEC Brushless Speed Controller
520mm TIG Carbon Fiber Main Blades
Futaba GY-520 Gyro
Turnigy 5000mAh 6S 40C Lipo Pack

Just sport flying I am using: -Align cyclic and tail servos -Castle Creations Talon 90 ESC -Converted to Align 600 fbl head -MSH Ikon flybarless controller -550mm Fiber glass blades ($18 ones from helidirect, do not know brand) -Turnigy T600 1100kv -17 tooth pinion -10* & - pitch -2230 head speed -Turnigy 5000mah 6s 45c packs
 LuckAr 10 points
Thanks gs550t1981. I noticed you use 550mm main blades. Do you modify you tail boom and tail blades? I've read that, with 550mm blades, you should use a 600 size tail boom and change tail blades lenght.
 gs550t1981 24 points
a 550 heli can usually use 520-550mm blades. Seen a few with up to 560mm blades. The ones I use work great. Haven't had any problems with them and you do not have to make any changes to the heli. What are you running is your setup? I am curious now.

I would like to use it with Robbe Roxxy 9120-12 120A ESC and 8S. will it work?
 skyfox60 249 points
Yes, it will, but only for a short time. What do you think why they state 5-7S. It is surely not a yoke. You need 8S or more if you have a warbird and you want to show a "war-like" crash with a burning bird falling from heaven.

Anyone converted this to a long shaft? What shaft did you use?
 arne469 12 points
I use it as it is , only take off a little from the main frame side with a multi cut .
has very much power , down´t forget in the BEC very very soft or you need a new main gear *-)
fly fantastic
 iBonkers 31 points
Does anyone know where I can get a long shaft to fit this?
 arne469 12 points
I put you a Photo under Files Motor w 6016Z Pinion 6mm , Main Gear is a 188T from Align (H60062T) or why a long shaft ?
BEST ANSWER CREDIT AWARDED
 iBonkers 31 points
Thks Arne, I'm using it for a heli that has a counter bearing support. Hence I need a longer shaft that extends beyond the pinion to slot into that bearing.

Anyone know what the power (W) rating is????
 arne469 12 points
This depends on your voltage w=V*I double the V and the W is 4 times higher ...
I use 6S 24V and drive the Motor with max 60pcnt , also in max 24V*60A=1440W

Is this motor really 1100kv or a bit less \ more? What pinion I need for 600 size heli with 6S battery? Calculator tells something about 16-17 teeth... Is that true?
 Rototiller 49 points
Yep, I have a 16 on here now but flew with the 17 for a bit. You need cooler weather with the 17 tooth. 16 is great but I setup a buddies with the 15 tooth and thought it was perfect for normal flying or really hot weather. Normal/ aerobatic 15 tooth. aerobatic/soft 3d 16 tooth. Hard core 3d 17 tooth. This is on a k-force 70 amp hv speedo. I would not run anything lower then 40c packs !!!!

 Hella-Kopterz 129 points
I run 15t on a 188 helical main gear(12.53:1). No 3d, just low HS sport/scale flying. Good for flight times but power is a bit soft. Really depends on HOW your going to fly it.
 Rototiller 49 points
How much pitch do u have dialed in? It will pull 13 deg at 2150 hs all day on 45c. I would bet the lower gearing and head speed would still allow the motor to pull 12. Should b more power then needed for scale.

I was thinking of putting this in my HK600GT. Sounds like it's a good motor for that size bird. Has anyone tried this motor with a SuperBrain 100amp ESC? Or is that ESC a little on the small side? I was going to use a 6s 30C battery and a 13 to 14 tooth pinion gear with the stock 170 tooth main gear.

 Hella-Kopterz 129 points
70 amp ESC and 15-17t pinion on 170 main gear are good baselines. I run 100 amp ESC 15t combo. Good for sport and mild aerobatics. I suggest 100 amp ESC if you run 17t for 3D.
 Rototiller 49 points
I run on a 70 amp esc and a 17 tooth all the time. I drop to the 16 tooth for the really hot days.

How many poles is this motor? I am trying to setup my esc governor. Thanks for your help!
 helinelly 224 points
with this motor it is best to run a flat curve instead of a governor......if your flying 3d then a flat curve is the way to go....

The T600-1100kv is a Scorpion clone. Timing settings: 5 degrees, 8Hz I have converted mine to 530kv and fly it on 12s with my 600 heli. It has even more power now. Conversion is pretty easy, no riwinding, just connect as star instead of delta.
 Hella-Kopterz 129 points
Amadeus 600, you got any info on how to convert to 12S/530kv? I thought you had to rewind the motor to do this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Will this motor fit the HK600 GT without modifying the frames?
 Dave Gunn 28 points
No, some modification must be done. Spacers between engine mount and frame or cutting away some of the frame.
 Doglao 7 points
I do some modifications, see my video. I cut the frame to free the motor and I do 5mm spacer between servo and frame to fitting large servos, And have to do 4mm wider to the motor mount.

What mounting screws do i need for this motor? Mine doesn't come with any? Thanx
 paulsouthport 60 points
Still waiting on mine to arrive but believe the bolts are M4
 Grumpy Stump 12 points
The mounting screws are M4.I used 12mm long screws with a 1mm stainless steel washer with a 4.6mm motor mounting plate. They protrude past the motor housing by a few threads, perfect fit.

What timing angle is preferred for this motor?

I have one and I blew two ESC trying to run on med and High timing. Then I tried the Low timing and this motor smooth out like a Mercedes Benz E-class. ESC Timing should be set to LOW

What is the Wattage (how many watts?) does this motor does on a 6s Battery? also on 600 size heli on 6S 5000 Mah pack what teh flight time for sports flying?
 kuryaky 52 points
is use independent bec for your radio equippment you can fligth almost 8 minutes, but if you power up your radio you just get 5 minutes.
 Straight Up 743 points
Not sure what kuryaky is responding to. Anyhow, the wattage depends on your pinion selection - more teeth = more watts. Check the Reviews for sample performance. Flight time depends on your average amps, which depends on the pinion. If you average 40A you can fly safely for 6 minutes.
 NemesisZ 24 points
Does anyone knows how many watts is the max. power of this motor with a 6S pack?

Looks like 2000W based on the reviews, where people have pushed it to 100A on 6S.

I can only say this is a GREAT motor. I have it in my 600heli with 6S and flying som light 3D and the power in this motor is incredible good. How can it bee so cheap?? idon´t know :)

I too use this with a 5800 6s1p Zippy, and I have to say, thing this motor is a real monster! The guy who wrote the description for this is not kidding! You TRULEY do have to make sure your screws are tight! LOL I have not experienced ANY bog whatsoever. A true value. Time will tell with the bearings, but proper periodic lubrication should make this last a long time.

after looking at the 880kV and 1400kV versions, they are rated for up to 8s, and this one only 7s, ignoring the 880kV, why is the 1400kV 8s compatible and not this one?
 Bobo67 14 points
I use 8S 5000 mhA with pinion 14T, 2400 blade rpm, awesome, max temp. 50°! :-)
 stormtronix 23 points
the s-number depends on the internal arangement of the wires and windings and the resistance, this motor is built for max. 7s so you shouldn´t exceed this
 Jono24 17 points
you don't know what you're talking about do you stormtronix. are you suggesting they use a heavier gauge wire in both the 1400kv and 880kv versions but opt for a lighter gauge wire in this version?
 mike-heli 3 points
it is all about the amps and current the windings can let pass through with out getting to hot to melt coating off and internally melting down

Hi all, Will this motor run fine on TURNIGY Sentilon100A HV 5-12S BESC (Ver4) or I should consider buying a more powerful ESC? Greetz
 Jono24 17 points
that esc is good, but this motor won't handle much more than 6s. I'd go for the turnigy k-force 150a opto esc for this motor.
 Jono24 17 points
I take back my comment, after looking at the 880kV and 1400kV is rated for up to 8s, and this one only 7s, ignoring the 880kV, why is the 1400 8s compatible and not this one?
 I.Ralenekov 138 points
And if the motor and esc run 6s battery? Will the esc be sufficient? I don't understand in which circumstances the motor can reach 110A. RC heli, idle up and some tic-tocs?
