Thank you for all the help Dongskie. One last question, how much does an average OPTO ESC draw from the control line? This ESC's 'sister' the SS Series 50-60a ESC seems to be the next logical step, but I don't know which BECs I need. Also, can I rely on my controller (MultiWii Pro) to distribute the power, or do I need to do some soldering?
Thank you for all your help.
Hi Cuthbert. It would be safe to have a 5Amp (8amp peak)UBEC. I am not exactly sure how much amp it will draw since it only powers the MultiWii board and the ESC and the ESC is already self sufficient with the lipo pack, and doesnt have a servo to control too. So a 5Amp UBEC should do well. Happy flying!
Actually the MultiWii will draw power from the ESC (in the absence of an independent Ubec. The motor will draw the Amp from the ESC, that is why you need a Motor and ESC harmony, meaning the ESC Amp capacity should be a little more than how much Amp the Motor will draw. So ESC/Motor Amp draw is basically separate from your electronics system Amp draw.
Dongskie thank you for the quick reply, unfortunetely the only other ESC that could handle this quantity of current costs three times as much money, and I can't afford that. Would flashing the ESC fix the throttle response issue? I really like this ESC, and a smooth start on a large multicopter would look SO EPIC.
Flashing the ESC with a better multi-rotor firmware will be good, but I am not just sure if this ESC is compatible or is a flashable ESC.
In fact the only issue with this ESC is that it reboots when you set the throttle down to zero.
Will this be usable on a Heavy Lift Aerial Filming Hexacopter? Are the update frequency and response time good enough to keep it stable, and would the controller (MultiWii running MegaPirate) ever send the 'throttle off' signal while in the air, initiating a reboot?
Thank you for your time.
NO SIR! Please use a specified Multi-Rotor ESC as they have smoother throttle response compared to this ESC. Go to the Multi-Rotors section and choose from the ESC options.
Another thing I noticed with this ESC is it's battery detect issue when it can only check 3S even if I install a 4S pack.
I am sure it detects 2S when it beeps twice after the start-up and 3S when it beeps thrice. When I installed a 4S pack, it still beeps 3 times only. Same issue could apply in the cutoff mode, it could totally drain the 4S down to the 3S range and could also destroy the 4S lipo pack.
The RC Maniac: this an esc for heli so you never shut off the engine in flight when mine fault was traslation the heli, so HOBBY KING not notice about this issue???
Carefully!!! Have two crashes befor advice that the esc re initializated in flyght or when pulldown the throtle! No matter how long the motor is runinng.
I Had the same issue. It seems to be a safety function of ESC, not a defect. As long as you don't shut off your motor in flight (a bad idea anyway), you should be fine. That being said, I would NOT recommend using this ESC in an airplane. In an airplane you can shut off the motor and glide, but this ESC will re-start, possibly making you unable to recover from a stall, etc.
I can think of a workaround for this issue that may work: Program your transmitter so that the lowest throttle setting is at maybe 5% or so. The ESC only seems to reset when throttle is 0%. Maybe this will work?
Can anyone please tell me which programming card is suitable for this 50-65A ESC ? I'm currently using ' TURNIGY BESC Programming Card'. Is it suitable?
but most people use advice on how to program so I can not say you're having trouble, but I got the problem with the normal birez think it would be out of adjustment necessary to use the Turnigy BESC Programming Programming Card can be use for the appropriate
From what I know about these ESC's they are designed to be plug and play...with little adjustments neccesary from you...or me...but their is a file on the esc's page that does go into the little adjustments you can make...its been rebranded.. Ive found that alot of the iteams HK sells are so...take a look at the file they are helpful...I have a few SS 50/65's myself.
Did you notice that this is a 50-65A ESC? i guess you are using an 18amp esc in a 250 size heli. The software might be similar but the size is not even close!
You can download the guide in the files tab.
Make sure you bind your RX and set throttle travel first before any thing else.
when programing dont go past the Half way point or it well take you out of programing.
put the throttle at full power. plug esc to batt.you will hear the beeps then pull throttle back to 0.ive found that if you experiment with time you leave at full till 0.you will find your sweet spot.thanx for shopping HOBBYKING...AMP
hi guys,
I've been reading that the manual for this esc is not the right one so could you please tell me where could I find it... or anyone can send it to my e-mail please: c_mar76yahoo****
thanks a lot
The instructions in the "FILES" link worked for me and I managed to set-up my ESC correctly. Please retry and pay close attention to the tones and beeps. Good luck!
Yes this is for Heli, but it can also be used in different application. I actually use on my Trojan airplane. Lots of power specially on 4S LiPo! Happy Flying!
Hello, they says by hobbyking only programming with transmitter buth how you do it with another, cart? Settings brake, trothele time, setting time, etc. With transmitter only battery, just? Its a good esc for RV min 2000KV(rpm).
Yes this is a Good ESC, and you can program it by your transmitter only and not any programming card. just plugin batt when max throttle on Tx to start progrmming mode and refer to owners manuel in the files section on the product page of this ESC.
When I insalled, the beeps of the controller are very faint, so quiet I can hardly hear anything. When I raised the throttle position slightly, the motor just jerks back and forth. The leads to the motor make no difference in the hookup order. Any suggestions?
look at the files section on HK to download the programming manual for this ESC, then set the pole to brushless and check for remaining settings as per your motor, also keep the throttle trim at center position for this ESC to work properly.I hope this helps
Does anybody know what programming card works for this ESC? It would be really nice if the product description/manual documents if the ESC is card programmable or not and indicates the card/s as required.
I have this unit on my HK450 with 4 HXT900's and Flymentor attached. With the motor unplugged and servos at idle position, it gets very hot. Any suggestions?
Every ESC which has a BEC in it will get hot even if the motor is unplugged, as at that time you are still using the ESC as an UBEC to supply power to servo's Gyro etc.I hope this helps
Okay, but when I measure the load with my Turnigy amp meter at idle, it says between 0.5-0.9A, meaning its not even using 1/3 of the advertised 3A BEC in this unit.
i would cut it open and see if you have soilder bridge.its easy but intimodating.i get old circut boards from anywhere and practice.the small repair big help for me
Hi NO the Auto Reset is not yet fixed on this ESC, however if you increase your Throttle trim to 60pcnt or land with an autorotation then you don't face that issue.
Hi friends,
I've bought this ESC and when I turned(after config) it on every time I put down the Throttle, it start "beep, beep, beep", and I can not control it. I only get the control back after the "beep" stop.
I think it is demage.
Ever one has any idea about it?
********************************************-
Obrigado.
I disagree, because even after 15 minutes, it has the same behavior. When I you speed up (Throttle in the maximum - after calibrating), and then down (Throttle in the minimum), it starts "beep, beep, beep, and I lose the speed controler. I have to turn it off and turn it on to normalize.
This question has been asked several times please go through the Review section of this ESC. This is a normal behavior for this ESC it re-calibrates after every flight to a soft start, so you cannot use this ESC on a plane.
Friend HellyFlyer,
Thanks a lot for your help,
Before buying this ESC I have gotten the manual from this page (file option), and there no infomation about this, Is it possible change it to work with planes.
Thanks a lot again.
This ESC has very limited programming options. Unfortunately the softstart is not one of them and there is no need to get rid of that softstart when used in a chopper. After all it has HELI written all over it!
Yes this ESC will work with the ESky Motor, here is the link to its owners manual, I have just uploaded it's owners manual to the file section for your reference.
Has anyone experienced in a hover motor speed hunting without moving the throttle stick position on the transmitter...and then the michine will just shut down but will start right up when tried again? After more hover attempts the heli then shuts down thermally. If memory serves, in the begining during flight testing (problems were resolved with changing the blades)this problem was not present (had FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS on the ESC). I have tried programing the ESC and the results are stated above (not good). I'm running a 450 heli with a 4 bladed head, 3s lipo * 2200 ma,4400kv motor along with this HKSSH50A ESC. Any Ideas as to whats going on? Does someone have the FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS or correct setting information for what I'm running.
Hey, It seems that your ESC is not programmed correctly, try the following settings:- Ensure that the battery setting is correct 3slipo, Throttle setting should be soft Acc(•• — — — — 2 Short 4 Long), Throttle type should be governer mode with 6-10 poles motors(••• — — — 3 Short 3 Long), leave the cutoff type as is, timing mode should be 15º- For 10-14 Pole Outrunner Motors(••••• — — — 5 Short 3 Long), Pulse Width Modulation(PWM) Setting should be 16KHz (•••••• — — 6 Short 2 Long). I ho
OK! We did program the esc as you suggested. The only thing changed was the governer mode. Everything else was the same. We took it outside and hovered for about five minutes when it cut out. This happened four more times with a shorter duration between each failure until it wouldn't s***l up anymore until it cooled. We did find a cold solder joint on the b phase of the esc, but I resoldered it and it was good. What else sould we look for? The only thing I can think todo is put a 10 tooth pinion on to lower the load of the motor. What do all my fellow helifreaks say? Thanx in advance!
I had the same problem with some other controller!
It turned out to be due to overheating. Probably a safety feature!? I suggest you use a smaller pinion as you said, to lower the load. 4 blade head has more drag and therefore needs more power!!
Post is a little old so you probably overcome your problem by now, but since no one else suggested this I will anyways, if there is room putting a more realistic heatsink(thicker base with some fins) on the esc will likely correct the OH issue entirely. Also the capacitors on the ESC are crucial with most esc, most are way under V and heat up rapidly, once above rated temp, instability (stuttering, shutdown)occurs. This esc seems finicky based on comments, Higher quality unit probably best solution. Hope that helps, Troy
Hallo,
irgendwie laesst sich der Regler nicht progammieren... bzw. laeuft mit dem x500 von hk nur in eine Richtung wenn ich ihn dann so pole das er richtig rum laufen sollte quitscht er nur...
Very good to use with HK helicopters but no programming possible. Buy one of the other versions if you need programming.

3 thumbs up!
It says in the manual it should be possible to program it for acro. Instant power all the time, but I find it impossible to get rid of the veeeeeeeeeeery slow startup. The ESC "sings" a melody and three beeps after each full throttle when flying. Then it is not possible to give instant throttle, so the plain have no instant power to recover its trip towards the ground....BANG!
