I have made an EDF using Kress RK720 rotor 82 mm diameter, rest of fan unit home made from carbon fibre moldings. It is powered by TGY 35-48 1100 kv from Hobby City. I tested this fan unit on 6s battery and got 2.25 lbs of thrust. I made a tuned intake 60 mm long with 5 pre swirl vanes which I tested on the same battery; amps went up from 16 up to 34; thrust went up to 4.6 lbs. I have modified two 4.5 inch Hoaye fans by reducing width of baldes at tip by 8 mm in a curve from tip to root of the blade, which reduced current to around half. Have made pre swirl units as above and will finish test on these soon: they appear to react the same as the Kress fan above, Regards, Ken Jack |

I'm afraid I haven't had the pleasure yet. Do you know if mike is a member of ARCA? ( the north Ausing club) I'm actually in a northern suburb - Georgetown - and belong to that club.
Very cool mods to the fans. Once I get settled into a new job and can get back to the toys againI'll have to try that. Edited by MarkD - 21/Apr/2009 at 11:36am |

i have made a pre swirl addition on front of a wemotech midi fan with same results to previous units ihave modified .I have made 24 gas turbines over the last 15 years so i have had a lot of experiance in design and development .I have now just real ised why this idea works it is like the turbine and ngv in reverse. The pre swirl is like the ngv in that it is a nozzel that direct the air also increases its speed directly at the moving fan .This reduces the turbulance at the fan face .try it as thrust increases by 20- 30 %regards Ken jack

This is super interesting, and have a extra Fan under powered fan combo I would love to try this with. Is there anything, specific regarding the pitch of the "nozzle guide vanes" going into the Fan. This make loads of sense as in a turbine it sets up the airflow for the first stage. This will act by reducing the strain on the motor...

OOPS,i thouht i had a brand new idea until today while seaching through old magazines for ifo on flaps for a p40 kittyhawk wheni came across article in RCM Aug 1976 by JJ SCOZZI on ducted fans .He tested inlet vanes in his fan unit and found that the breathing capcity increased at low speed condition while not affecting high speed flight ,his vanes are not shaped like mine .Toanswer Seank the blades on my intake so they move into fan at same angle as the the fan blade at the tip to the hub.The first third is axial to the the second third radi the last third to match fan blade angle.regards Ken Jack

Hi,I am back again with another idear useing same inlet guide vanes causing swirl followed by the normal flow guides as the inlet to direct airflow onto a second fan rotor driven by another brushless motor of a higher kv rating than the front fan motor.I am not sure how much increase in kv rating but think the increase of 30 percent .I would like feedback on this idea as to your thoughts.Regards Ken Jack.
