I have a Surmount (all of them, actually, but that's another story..)

The Surmount needs somewhere between 900-1000g EXCLUDING the bulb weight itself.

For what its worth, the Monsson and Legend need 1700+ (nett weight), the Phantom 1850 and the Ocean racer about 1900g.

That's all personal usage results, in all kinds of conditions.

But, hey.. visit shipshapercDOTcom and read up on the forum what everyone else has done about ballast..

The smaller the shot size, the more will fit into a confined area (greater density through less air spaces. Also try filling spaces still left with brass dust/shavings from a lathe then epoxy fill for best density. Note: Don't try to create lead powder as that is really dangerous - seriously bad stuff. Brass is 2/3 density and you'd be surprised how much brass dust will penetrate into packed lead shot with a lot of shaking.

Another vote here for soft scuba ballast pouches. The shot was between 1 and 2 mm, and it pours very easily through the keelbulb hole. I got 1.9kg into the legend bulb.
