help. I bought the surmount sailboat. I am trying to add the 1.3 KG of ballast, but when I filled the ballast with BB's, it only weighed 556 grams, not 1300 grams. What are you all using for ballast?

It is fine if you use whatever small sized lead pieces - top filled it matches shown 1,3 kg of ballast. It is recommendable to fix the lead pieces by epoxy to avoid their possible movement.
Myself, I prefer heavier ballast (2 kgs) and then I had to cut tip of the keel bulb by Dremel fine disc saw and filled the bulb with melted lead. This way it is possible to put lead weight up to 2,3 kgs there. Using extra thin saw to open the fiberglass keel bulb - it is very easy to put it back with intersection bolt and glue. If you decide to do the same way - do the casting in 4-5 steps, the halves outer surfase always cooled. I used simple way - putting halves into glass of cold water. No sign neithe on fibeglass nor on nice glossy black finish.
There is almost no sign of cut on the surface after assembly. It is easy alltogether and not much time eating (1 hour approx). Whatever broken lead you can get from plumber scrap and melt it easily. I did this small quantity even in my home kitchen - windows wide open (lead fumes are poisonous you might know). For melting used mason cup trowel. Comfortable handles, safer clean way, no damage, burns.

Being new to form not sure if you received an answer to your question about ballast. In Hawaii we use lead shot, but I could not find any lead shot in Hawaii I just used lead fishing weights. In my phamton I use what is called slip shot weights. They look is BB's and are found anyplace that sells fishing supplies. The good thing about them is that thry come in different sizes and weights so it is easy to get close to the weight that you need.

The ballast of the surmount is 210 mm long and that of the monsoon is 300 mm long. How on earth they both suppose to weight 1.2-1.3 kg ? Did I got a wrong ballast body for my surmount ?

Here in Denmark LEAD has been banned, to use in Ammunition. -But there is another way of getting it, Roofing materials, on older houses it common to use it as a sealant around chimneys and one the edge of the roof tiles.
So i out scavenging every time i see a roof being rebuild. and im pretty sure you can melt it quite easily over at fire, in an old pot -and Sand cast it in wet sand. bucket of sand, make an impression in it, and poor the melted lead in. |

Just to add a bit of info to this for people with the similar problem:
I bought a Phantom sailboat. Following instructions, I purchased lead fishing round sinkers size 0 (standardised to approx 9.5 mm diameter and 4 gr each). I measured on my kitchen scale 1.3 kg, and just managed to squeeze all of them through the single round 10 mm hole ond tha balast bulb. I even managed to add 6 more, as I think a bit more ballast should have a positive effect. Planning to seal all that with epoxy.
The key is in the size of these lead pieces. Sinkers size 0 are just right. You may do well with size 00 (smaller, about 2 gr each). Size 1 are too big. No melting lead (a messy job, poisonous fumes).

Use softweight from diver shop. size is so small so you can put in the bulb with no problem.
