I bought the H-KING 10A Fixed Wing Brushless Speed Controller to go with a Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 2122-1800kv Brushless Outrunner Motor but it seems to cut out when full throttle. Fairly new to hobby and still learning about the electronics. Any suggestions?

what current is it drawing and what voltage?

The recommended propellor (for 3S) is 8 x 4 or 7 x 5
I don't care what it says on the profile - I'm so NOT GB!

8X4 prop. I am running 3S but dont' know current or voltage. I just got the Watt Meter and Power Analyzer from HK but haven't soldered up connectors, etc, yet.

Hi Dratit,

One thing I did notice in the specification for this Brushless Speed Controller (allso known as ESC Electronic
Speed Controller) is that the bult-in BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit)(the bec powers your receiver and servos) is only rated for 1 amp, 1 amp is ok for two small servos
that don't work to hard, using more than two servos or using larger servos you have a much grater chance of the receiver going
in to "Brown-out" this is very common, especially with older Spektrum receivers.
When the receiver has a brown-out the Electronic
Speed Controller gos into "fail-safe" and stops the motor from runing.

To test if this is your problem, see if your servos still work the moment the motor cuts out. If servos still work as the motor cuts out your have some outher problem.

In the ESC manual it said cut off voltage is 3volt per cell, you should notice the motor slowing down before it cuts out completely, so I don't think this you problem. Good luck.

Cheers
FDU

1800kv for a 8x4 prop at 3s draws way too much amps for a 10a esc

At that kv and cell count, you'll be drawing close to 30-35 amps!!!

ESC is cutting out to protect itself from roasting! You're drawing too much amp and heat!

Coptor - this is from the review on the motor in question:

"...I also tested using a 3S setup and for thrust, the best (of the props I had) was a 5.7x3 which yielded 157 g of thrust @ 4A, 50W, 12.3V. Here's my numbers: V : prop : Watts : Amps : Thrust/..."
8x4 : 46W : 7A : 230 g 6.x :
7x6 : 54W : 7A : 215 g 6.0 :
6x5 : 41W : 6A : 153 g 12.25 :
5x5 : 70W : 5.6A : 75 g 12.3 :
5.7x3 : 50W : 4A : 157

7 Amps is well inside the limit

Daiti, please note that the voltage had to go down for the 8x4 prop
I/E 46 watts \7amps=~6.5volt
the 50 watts was at 3 cell
the OP said he had a 3 cell setup with the 8x4 i would bet it is well over 10 amps.

Tx. I noticed that the motor pulsates at full throttle but all servos work when it's doing it. I tried another ESC that doesn't seem to have any markings on it (from my father-in-law) and it now goes full throttle but it seems the ESC warms up pretty quick.

Of course it warms up very quick.

The motor is going to burn out sooner or later at that rate.

You need 2s for motors between 1500-2000kv to use 8x4 as a standard rule.

I have a wattmeter and plenty of motors with all kinds of KV (Almost all from HK) so I can roughly remember off my head a certain KV and prop dimension rules and roughly how much amps they would draw.

8x4 prop at 3s is best used for outrunners around 1100-1300kv with 15a-18amp esc.
