The Starmax F/A-18 is a nice flying model but the plane was a monster on the takeoff roll. It would dart with any corrections, often dragging a wingtip. It was so bad it took the fun out of flying it. I even considered removing the gear altogether. Trying to fix it I tightened all gear legs, added a gyro and that helped but the gyro had a nagging trim change by the end of the flight. I finally did the right thing and relocated the main gear 5" closer to the C of G. With the wheels 1" behind the C of G the handling is now tame and predictable. The plane used to almost leap into the air but now the rotation is at lower speed with less elevator making it much more realistic. We had a similar experience with our SAPAC Gripen.
Cheers

Could you put the gyro on a switch and turn it off just after take off
I'm as happy as a very happy sandboy.

I've done that however that only helps the takeoff. Using a gyro can help with steering but having a decent rotation for takeoff can only be fixed by having the main gear reasonably close to the C of G.
