Yes, a simulator was the first lesson I took in flying. While it's definitely not a real world experience, you do get to practice which way to twitch your ailerons when you need to level up your wings, whether the plane is nose on or tail on to you. A must, yes, Bruce.

I've come to realise, by myself, what other people have been saying all along, that a bigger learner plane is better than a smaller one. Quite aside from handling the wind better, you can take it much higher and still see the thing. Extra height equates to extra time to re-gain control of your plane, saving you many dollars in replacing parts and puffed lipos. (I've been lucky in that regard, no puffed lipos yet).
I love the sound of crashing planes in the morning.

Hi BenGee,
Quite long ago I gave my field box away, it was something I built out of my head so unfortunately no plans, I tried to find a pic of it, but to no avail. However, there is good news, click here for a set of plans on one.

You can also click HERE for a video on how to build a simple one.

You can get adventurous building on the ideas and housing your power supply and building charging ports but those are two ol'skool ideas that still work and can serve as good foundations.

Currently, I use a Plano Drawer Model 1354 (below) works like a charm but does not have an airplane cradle, I might build on it later

Hope that helps!

Hiya Mr (and especially Mrs) NIfty

Many thanks for your reply. I'm currently trying to construct my bench testing gear, having got my watt meter a few days ago. It turns out that even setting up a simple motor mounting can present contradictory ideas on effectiveness and safety..... one of my plans even had me staring straight at the prop, so got the brain out of lockup and rebooted myself, right up the bum. I will look at your recommendations over the weekend and go from there.

Ben

And Mr and Mrs NIfty, I did make myself a little field box using the foam my Tx came in, and a few bits of 2x1...... it's not flash, but it is quite functional, I'll post a pic of it when I get my camera fixed. :)

A simulator!

I've taught *lots* of people to fly and the ones who have spent a few weeks with a simulator are generally solo within 1 or 2 flights.

Those who don't use a sim take *much* longer to gain enough skills to go solo.

I downloaded two RC Flight Simulators to my iPad and spent the *weeks* of wait to my shipping arrive from HK practicing. I was driving my wife nuts with all that virtual flying but it was worth every second! I banged my AXN (which I assembled after watching Bruce's instructions a thousand times) around quite a few times but less than I expected. Today I flew for half an hour with strong winds and did not hit a single tree, lamp post, high voltage power line or curb! (yes, I've been having some strong emotions lately!)
