While this was written for the Tunigy 9X most steps should apply to other transmitters. Note that the cable required may vary on other brands. What you need
Initial setup Download PPJoy and run Setup.exe from within the archive. Go through the installation clicking next when required. As the installation finishes you'll most likely get such a prompt: ![]() Click continue anyway to proceed. With PPJoy now installed run Configure Joysticks from its newly created start menu listing. ![]() Choose Add and add a virtual joystick like so: ![]() After adding a joystick you should then be prompted with two Found New Hardware Wizards ("Parallel Port Joystick 1" and "HID-compliant game controller"), since it makes little sense in connecting to WindowsUpdate, choose No, not this time followed by Install the software automatically for both of theese. A logo certification window might pop up, choose continue anyway as before. In the PPJoy window select your newly added joystick and choose Mapping. Pick Set a custom mapping for this controller followed by Next. Next up is defining buttons and axis for your controller. Note that in this window the functions for each axis is only for Windows' identification, their real function will vary with controller mode and mixes. ![]() The next window assigns the real controller axis to each virtual joystick axis. If your sim of choice has a joystick mapping menu you can safely leave theese at their analog 0-5 values, if not you can finetune them later when SmartPropoPlus and PPJoy are working together correctly. Since we're not assigning any buttons continue clicking next until the configuration is finished. SmartPropoPlus final setup From the start-menu open the SmartPropoPlus console. Check generic PPM and the PPJoy Extension then select the correct audio source for where you connected the minijack cable earlier. Ie: ![]() Once done click the hide button. (done closes the application) And that's it, your controller should now be working. Optionally you could go to the game controller part of your Windows control panel to check out your axis assignment. Or simply dive straight into a simulator and correct them there instead. Simulators That then brings us to the actual sims. They're great investments for reduced repairbills. There are plenty to choose from, most cost a good bit of money, but there are also a couple free alternatives like FMS and HeliSimRC. FMS has a greater selection of models, while HeliSimRC is focused around helis and does the physics around them really well. For HeliSimRC choose Joystick->Mapping then check that the correct axis' move as you move the sticks on the controller. Once that's corrected calibrate the controller from the same menu and off you go! What do you think, too much, too little? Feedback appreciated |

I was wondering how to do this very thing this past weekend, and now I know. Great writeup!
Wonder if it'll work in Windows 7 x64? (Nope, no ppjoy for x64, going to have to run this one on my 32-bit OS. Edited by Heffe2001 - 19/May/2009 at 2:17am |

This trick with SmartPropoPlus is for use with soundcard and a jack for line input on your soundcard to the trainer port on the radio, not for the programming USB cable. It works for all types of transmitters. The programming cable is what it says, a programming cable, not a gameport....

I tried all the steps here but I can only get 3 channels. Either the throttle or the rudder will not work. Does anyone else have this problem or know how to correct it?
Thanks

Thanks for the awesome writeup.
I've got to try this with my MX12, does anybody know if that is even possible?

Hello, I followed the exact recipe as shown above for the Turnigy 9X however I am getting a lof of inherent 'noise' from a scope (namely zelscope which was used to test).
The microphone is muted and boost is off, when I move the control control sticks etc, there are signs of influence to the scope but not much, it flickers a lot and has erratic/chaotic lines to begin with; i.e. inherent 'noise' .
Also, if I press "scan" during the "configure joypad" to define the analog channels, there is no response - as in, when I move the sticks, nothing registers.
Anyone else experiencing this or know a solution? what else could I try?
Please help.
Thanks in advace,
Derku

Derku, the scan function doesn't work as at that point smartpropoplus hasn't yet connected with ppjoy. What function you assign to each channel is of no great regard as you can usualy change what axis does what in your sim. So unless you're going to use your controller as a generic gamepad you might as well adjust them there. I haven't checked mine on the scope, but I can imagine the digital signal will look much like noise when overlaid on the regular interference picked up from your computer's fans and switching components. The soundcard isn't really designed for that kind of accuracy. Tested it in a sim?
I'm not sure what kind of trainerport the MX12 has, but if you can connect it to your PC it should work. (but might require some work) |

Merlon, thanks for your help - it almost works perfectly now.
The only problem is as soon as I connect the audio jack, my speakers exhibit an annoying buzzing 'noise'. This buzzing noise cannot be stopped by muting the master volume or any other options from the 'Master Volume' dialog.
Again, my microphone is muted and boost is off.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advace,
Derku.
p.s. Also in regards to feedback to your instructions - well, theyre great! I really appreciate it when people take the time to make clear and concise instructions like yours. Seriously, well done :)
