The SE5a was responsible, along with the Sopwith Camel for winning back and retaining allied air superiority from mid 1917, until the end of the Great War. It was a stable aircraft, making it an excellent gun platform, it was faster than most allied fighters, including the Spad and more importantly, it was faster than anything flown by German fighter pilots. Although available in much smaller numbers than the Camel, the SE5a was the mount of many famous aces, including Albert Ball VC, James McCuddon & Edward Mannock, it was truly a classic fighter aircraft.
The superb Durafly SE5a is a high quality and beautifully detailed Plug and fly model that is made from tough EPO foam, good quality servo's are pre-fitted throughout, as is the ESC and powerful brushless outunner motor. The SE5a is not difficult to assemble and so will be fairly fast to get into the air, that said, with a model this nice, it really is worth taking your time! As well as looking fantastic, this model is built to last and features carbon re-enforced flying surfaces, steel re-enforced landing gear, proper rubber tyres, and so on.
At 1030mm wingspan, the Durafly SE5a has loads of presense in the air and on the ground, the high quality finish and level of detail really finish off this amazing model which flies every bit as good as it looks. There is stacks of power for aerobatics, and tons of thrust from the purpose made scale prop for cruising at scale speed, combine all that prop wash with the nicely balanced control surfaces and you have a model the handles well and retains it poise, no matter how slowly it is flown. The Durafly range is top quality in every respect and this stunning SE5a is no different, so time to don your flying helmet, goggles & silk scarf and go on the dawn patrol!
Martini, You will need a 3 cell (3S) battery. Don't try a 4 cell. It will not fit without an extensive modification. The 3 cell battery is a very tight fit in and of itself, but it does work. Watch your landings. The landing gear breaks rather easily on hard landings, and is a pain in the rear to repair and keep from re-breaking... This is a good flier and is fun to assemble. Have fun!
Hi Martini. A little mod to the battery tray and the SE5A takes the common 2200mah batteries ok.
Radio requires usual 4 Channels, throttle, rudder, ailerons, elevator.
Everything you need to know is on RC Forums, very helpful community there. (google it, as can't post links here.)

Hello to all...New to airplanes...raced cars for about 10yrs but that was 12 yrs ago.ju

looking at some reviews it looks like I should have a metal round washer included in my kit to attach the prop along with a metal nut,and a plastic nut/spacer. I do not have the round metal washer-should I ?
You shouldn't need the round metal washer. The plastic nut/spacer secures the prop to the motor shaft. Just tighten the metal nut, and you're good to go.
Higher kv = more RPM less torque. lower kv = less RPM more torque. So lower kv spin larger props higher kv spin smaller props. plus the bixler v1.1 has a 2620-1900kv 0n a 6x4 prop and the SE5a has a 3536-850kv on a 10x8 prop and a bigger diameter motor also.
The motor outside CAN is 35mm Diameter and 36mm Length not including the shaft the bigger the numbers the more power common outside diameters are 22mm 28mm 35mm 42mm 50mm
Can someone tell me if the wings break down into right and left halves? (not sure about the bottom one) I would also like to know what the length of the LONGEST component is (fuselage most likely if the wings are left and right halved, joined in the middle). the model needs to be packed up for checked airline baggage, so have to know size I can get it down to! (fit in suitcase)
hi conrad yes i love the se5a it is beauitfull in flight and landings are ausume let me know when you start the 182 and how it gos iam sure you will really like it larry
Hi Larry* NO, I have not started assemby yet becausez it is so big. I have checked it over and all parts are here. I wiil start to assemble soon. Are you satisfiezd with your BI-Plane. It must look great in the sky. Enjoy it Larry & keep in touch. Con!!
Good to hear from you Larry. Nice to hear your enjoying your Bi-plane. I knew this was a great plane ever since i first saw it. "Keep Em Flying Larry" & good lock buddy!!
That is great Larry* it cost a bit more than the BI-Plane but worth it. As soon as weather permits i'm going to assemble it. I will coat it first with varnish protector. "Keep Em Flying"
hi conrad i checked out the 182 it is beautiful and your right it is big hope it flys as good as it looks iam sure it will i have a couple of cessnas a 182 and the 310 twinn both fly great i never noticed the 182 you bought untill you brought it to my attention i may order one larry
Hello Larry* Check out the Giant Cessna 182-73". I purchased one of those and it is a giant. "The bibgger they are the better they fly"* what do you think, please give opinion!!
hi conrad ihave not flown the se5a yet but thinking about the durfly t-28 do you have one i also have the a1 skyraider hhavent flown it yet eather just wondered about your thoughts about the t-28 larry
Hello Larry, i don't have the T-28 but i watched the video. It seems to be a real "sky-raider". I think a full throttle it might be out of sight in no time. It seems to be a well built model. Enjoy!!~
happy new year conrad on a 1-10 scale i would rate myslef an 8 i have been flying quite a few years iam 71 years old still going strong cant fly here eather no snow but cold and windy will iam new to the electric planes i will let you know how the flight of tthe se5a gows larry
Happy New Year Larry* electric models are very popular because nitro is always messy after flight. Greasy clean-up. Electric will give you up to 12-15 minutes air time if "free-sailing" is used. If you turn your age around it would be 17. I was not sure. I am anxious to hear how your BI-PLANE zooms through the air. One last thing Larry* "Keep Em Flying" ok!!
hi conrad the se5a is finnished looking foward to flying it it is beauteful i will dothe matte finish have you flown yours yet will let you know about the flight larry
Good to hear you aleaady finished building yours. The finish i was telling you about can be purchased at hardeware store in "spray-can". Following directions on can and give it 2 coats. Temp here is -15 & 12" of snow so i can't fly in weather like that. Keep in touch OK!!
Hello Larry* How would you rate yourself as an RC pilot using numbers from 1**to**10? You should have someone with you to start out with to "show you the ropes" OK, I'LL BE BACK!!
That is great Larry* HK got it to you real fast. I suggest you read over the building paper a few times before starting. Do a "parts check" to see if anything is missing. 5 minutce epoxy is the best i think but of course that is your choice. Check with you later. OK!!
Hello Larry: One thing i should mention is that you should coat fusalage, wings & stabilizer with exterior clear varnish "matte finish" to protect plane from elements. If you love this Bi plane you will do this. OK...Good Luck!!
thanks conrad have not received my SE5A yet but looking foward to it enjoy the holidays we are not going to have snow here in texas will keep you informed about the plane larry
The Durafly SE5a 1030 (mm) instruction sheet: If antone is having trouble seeing and reading i suggest placeing each individual sheet in their scanner, then bringing it to their computer, where they can view each pic at any size they like. Save it in your pictures area & it will be there at a "click -of-a-mouse". OK. Thank-you!!
hi conrad havent received mine yet but looking foward to it are there any changes to it you will make during assembly i under stand there a problem with battery location larry
The battery goes under cockpit hole towards front. Receiver on rite or left or in front of servos (your preference). Remember attach wires first to receiver then attach to fusalage. You will do good Larry, keep me informed. Con!!
Yes i have one. It took some time getting here but it finally. It is a "unique scale model" with large wheels so i can use it on grass as well as pavement. The propeller is really something to see. I was very exited when this plane arrived & i am in the proses of assembling now. This is my first Durafy BI-Plane. Larry, i am sure you will be happy with yours. Regards Con!!
Ive just purchased this plane. In the manual when putting it together. page 6, second picture. there is a picture of the elevator and a rod in a hand, I think being glued in. Is this right as I did not get a rod to glue in.
Hi. Mine doesn't come with a rod too. I reckon its already fixed on for you. How do you fix the elevator? There is not a lot of meat to put the CA on..
i just made up a rod and glued it evenly across underside of elevator flys beautifully, however crashed on maiden as the reciever and the esc are all jammed up wih a 2200 3s so had a glitch and lost everything . insulated now it flys great benefits from rudder specially to the right and will do rolls just get alot of altitude plenty of power!
I have bought this plane over 1 year ago and have flown it many times. I am trying to write a review on it and cannot access the review. Click on blank write and nothing happens. Guy
I know they were have a few little problems with parts of the website a week or so ago while they where adding new parts to it maybe it was that, have you tired lately as it might be ok now plus make sure you click on how many crowns your awarding it,hope your sorted now though.
Conrad,
You haven't done a search and put in the motor numbers CG3536-850 or you'd know they don't come up. They are not recognized and that's why I'm seeking help from someone that's already found a motor/shaft combo that works.
Take a look at the Turnigy D3536/9 910KV,very similar spec motor. With a 3cell pack should give you between 220w and 250w depending on the prop which is more than enough for this model.

This aircraft is fun to build, looks great and after getting her in the air a week after the build, I'm a fan.
The best way to summarise the maiden was: watch Scott's video, replace his accent for an Aussie one.
Flying pre-dusk in 30 degree sunshine and no wind, the maiden flight was fun from the moment the prop started spinning. Running a 3S 2200mah 30C lipo, I set the timer for 5 minutes, and opened her up. The tail came up after a bit of a roll, held there for a sec, then she took off looking like it was 1917. After throttling back to 60pcnt, and a few clicks of up, I did some scale-like figure eights around the field. Did some low slow passes, a couple of diving 'high speed' strafing runs, and generally had a ball.
The plane will look like it'll stall if you don't keep the nose down when the throttle is closed, but not an issue to get out of it. I nailed a landing - no bouncing despite what I thought might happen - tested the battery and found 46pcnt still on board. Put another 2 mins on the timer and flew around a bit faster. Fantastic fun. After 7 minutes, the battery was down to 27pcnt, so I reckon 8 minutes in calm weather is looking like a plan.
At this stage I was wishing I had more than only 2 of the 2200 lipo's.
Flew the second battery and did a couple of rolls, a loop - it will fly non-scale at over 75pcnt - almost anything is possible. Did a few landings, taxii

Love this plane. Took me about 2 or 3 hours to build, not the 40mins as suggested but I really enjoyed the build too.
This is my first Bi-Plane and only my second plane I have purchased from HK.
Upon opening, very pleased with the packaging and the parts are all clearly labelled. The manual isn't perfect, but if you have half a clue about this hobby, you will be fine.
The finished product is so good. It's great to look at as a display but I found out on the maiden, even better to fly!
CG was perfect with a PZ 3S 2200mah battery and the capability to fly slow or fast is amazing. My first flight at half-throttle for 5mins left me with 75pcnt battery capacity remaining.
The previous review from Broose27 is spot-on. You will find a thread on RC Groups with more information and photos that will inspire you to buy this terrific www.link far, my most favorite plane in a collection of 14 in my hangar.
it just looks wonderful and i think i just hold it as a standmodel...

Very nice plane. No need to add any more comments than what has been said by all otherse here except the paint is terribly senditive, comes off almost only by looking at it. I will try to lacquer mine after painting all the spots where the paint has loosened. So be sure to buy a set of acrylic artist paint if you want to keep this plane in a good looking condition. Because of poor paint I give only 4 crowns for quality but otherwise quality and details are "superb" as the goy on the video says.

Due to some bad weather in my part of Aus i finally got to maided my bird today What a great aircraft i have set as it comes with no mods and used a 1800 3S 30 lipo and it took off from our rough grass field without any problems i had set all the rates at 50pcnt 75expo and other than a bit of right trim it flew great if not a little twitchy (yes twitchy) after a 4 minute flight i landed and reset the rates to 30pcnt 75expo and it was a dream to fly on half throttle i only did a few loops but it looked magnificent on low slow passes and a fellow member put up his cub and we did a few formation flyby, what a lot of fun and i cant wait to have the nerv to give it a roll or two . stall is a non issue i took it up cut the motor engaged full rates pull in the up elevator and it just floated along with just a gentel level decent , if you want a nice stable warbird that will have your fellow flyers jelious then get one befor they all go a real winner
