hexTronik Balancer/Charger Dual Charge Capable

hexTronik Balancer/Charger Dual Charge Capable (JST-XH Plug)
This charger differs from others in that it is built to be used in your car when at the field. It doesnt require a complicated wiring harness and fiddly button pressing/LCD reading setup for each battery. Just plug your pack in and it starts charging. Its robust case and built in charging fan ensure its operation long into the future.

Input Voltage : 9~15V DC
Output : (8.4v x 2) OR (12.6v x 1) OR (16.8v x 1)
Auto balancing
Auto Overcharge Protection
Size: 132x82x35mm
Weight: 309gr
Each cell charged individually, making charging quicker than other chargers that charge and bleed cells to balance them.

This charger comes with a balancer and overcharge protection inbuilt.
It can charge 2S to 4S packs and can also do TWO 2S packs at ONCE!! Which is a real bonus!
The charge port connection fits all Polymax, hexTronik, Dualsky, Align, Kokam etc.. battery ports.
You can adjust the charge rate from .5A up to 2.0A for a fast charge.

We use this charger to balance and charge packs sent back to us by customers under warranty returns.
Our staff have around 50 perfectly working packs for our fly-days. These packs were sent back to us from customers who could not charge or get the pack to balance with their own charger. If it wasnt for the chargers cell restoration slow-charge, we would have sent the faulty packs to the recyclers.

Although this charger doesnt have a fancy LCD screen, it is a solid workhorse and will charge and balance packs perfectly. We highly recommend it.

Plug type: JST-XH, to suit hexTronik, Dualsky, Aling and many other brands with JST-XH charge plugs.

i love this thing. I use in all the time and I use it even on my 6 cell packs when 1 cell is way off balance. On 6 cell chargers the charger lowers its charge rate to bellow an amp when cells are close to fully charged 4.2, but one cell is way behind like 4.08. now that the charge rate is at .5 amps this would take a long time for the the pack to be fully balanced, so instead i connect the slow cell to this charger and charge it by its self at 2 amps bringing my pack to balance quicker. ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE SERIAL BUTTON IS???????

I have this charger, now I have some nano-tech 6.6 Volt LIFEPO4 receiver batteries. Question: Can I use this charger to recharge these batteries?
 domenick 10 points
Your not suppose to because life cells have a lower fully charged voltage. This chrager will over charge the life cell and cause damage, however with that said you can still charge the life pack and monitor the cell voltage with a meter or a cell checker. i stop at 3.9 and walla. I do it all the time.

Thanks John. That's what I needed to know. Rgds

Am I doing something different. I can't get this to reliably balance any of my batteries. Brand new never used 5000mah 3S, charger it and the results between 4.12 and 4.14 on a recently calibrated Fluke multimeter. When I put it back on charge, the lights quickly go from red back to blue (green on older ones). However, when I set the charge rate to .5 amps, I got another 25 minutes charging time and final results were 4.158, 4.168, and 4.173. Everyone else semms to get 4.2 exactly. Any ideas before I leave a review. Is that acceptable?
 John 52 points
This charger is doing an almost perfect job for you. Anyone that gets three cells to match exactly has encountered an accident. It rarely happens. Take your battery, put it in your plane and fly it with confidence!

Hi all, Can we charge one cell Lipo with this ? Thanks !
 rcdude2 2 points
sorry, no, it charges either 2 2cell at once or one 3 or 4 cell.

will this suit the battery in the Trainstar Tough electric trainer RTF
 JesterBaze 7 points
Yes it will, the Trainstar Tough electric trainer uses a 3S Lipo, 1800mah battery. It should work fine. Please credit this answer =)

I have had two of these and been very pleased with their performance. However, after about a year of use they shorted out while connecting a battery. In both cases there was a bright arc and immediate melting of the charge wires of the battery. In one of the cases the connector actually fused with the charger and I had to quickly rip the battery away. These were fairly new Zippy 2S packs (~10-20 charges on each) so I doubt that the battery is to blame. It also feels improbable that I have twice gotten a faulty charger with the exact same problem. What I think happend is that the charger creates a common ground when charging two 2S packs at the same time. and that on both occasions the second pack I plugged in had a different discharge level than the first pack. Can someone figure out whether this is the case? I don't want to fry a third one of these.
 madflyer1997 38 points
hello i had the same problem but not quite as bad i found that all the other battery terminals are live and when i had my battery lead touch one of the terminals it had a bright arc and got very hot but the charger still works fine

Does this charger has LiPo storage charge mode or how can we properly maintain and store LiPos having only this charger?

This charger only works with car cigarette jack. How can i use it at home? Any idea to use this charger at normal 220V 60hz home power plug? Any adapter that suit for this charger for home using?
 Gary 3000 points
You will need to purchase a power supply, something like the HobbyKing 105w 7A would be ideal. You will though have to make up some sort of adaptor if you wish to keep the cigarette lighter plug on the charger.
planeguy  13 points - 8/17/2012

Seems like a good little charger for the price. Used it quite a bit. The only issue I am experiencing, if I try to charge on the 2.0a setting, the unit just blinks all lights at me and nothing seems to happen. Fan does not start up as usual when charging.I can charge at the other 3 settings no problem. The battery is a 3s 11.1v 2200mah, so 2amp charge should not be a problem, right? Anybody else had this happen or is my unit defective ?
 pms.forum 27 points
Try switching on the charger without any battery connected. According to the manual, the charger will do a self check and if there is any problem it will blink. Have you tried a different 3s battery? Maybe your charger could not provide enough power to charge at 2A? I believe you need at least 3A.

I had one of my 2s that was charged with my stock heli charger which this charger refuse or gave me an error to charge. The battery was balanced but the charger give a blinking blue on one led and flat red on the other. This charger charges my other new 2s batteries fine so I though the old battery was faulty. I used that battery for benchtesting to drop its voltage but then I gave the charger another try. Guess what, the battery charged as per normal. I dont know who is at fault but one thing is for sure, without a display this charger makes you guess what went wrong if it detected an error.
 planeguy 13 points
Thanks pms.forum I switched over to a 5amp supply and all is well in my little world again ! Charging full bore on all settings. Cheers

The led on mine is blue and red. The manual states green and red. Made me read the manual over and over to find what is wrong. I use Bestek AC to Dc 12V 7A wall to ciggies plug from **** with this charger and it works fine.
 planeguy 13 points
Yeah, my lights are blue too ! and so bloody bright they are dazzling !
ptybill  31 points - 5/28/2012

OK Yes I love the charger because it is idiot proof and that is great but I need to ask what numbers are considered balanced. My 3S batts usually range from 4.12 to 4.25 when finished. Is this close enough to call them balanced? I just finished one and it is at 4.12, 4.24, and 4.12? Would appreciate any advice.
 Tim 46 points
What are you using to check the voltages? Ideally, you should use a high quality voltage tester. Some of the "field testers" sold here can vary in accuracy. 4.24 does seem like an odd high for one cell, but again, unless you are using a high quality voltage tester, it's hard to say. it wont harm your Lipo to run it at .1v different per cell, so I would use it, and jsut keep a record of your voltages. I would trust the microprocesser in this battery charger rather than a cheaper field testing un

Thanks for you comments Tim. Yes I am using the simple HK 6 dlr field tester most of the time. BTW I grabbed severl of the 2 dlrs (yellow) plastic testers from HK. They are truly ****. Cannot read at all in daylight. I did use my old multi meter to see the difference and it was a little closer. I usually run out of nerve before I run out of battery anyway.:-)

iv had this for about 2 years now the end voltage and the balancing it not as acurate as it was does anybody now how to calabrate it... cheers.
 rc speed 277 points
i dont know but ask in hobbi king forum or buy charger...
 cperritte01 17 points
There are adjustment pots for each circuit on the internal board, but they are coated with a glue or epoxy which is very difficult to remove and you could potentially ruin the pot trying. If the charger is bad enough then you may have nothing to lose by trying, but at such a great price it may just be time for a new one.

i am having a problem with this charger ive been charging my 460mah 2s turnigy for 2 hours now and the two leds are still red i am using a 12v 500MA wall adapter could that be the problem also the fan is not working the thing is not hot so it prob wont exploed any help would be appreciated
 Andrew 1 points
would this work any www.link
 rider 44 points
Your wall adapter Doesn't have enough power - use at least 1000mA wall adapter, otherwise the voltage drops below battery voltage, so your battery will neveer be full.
 Tim 46 points
You need to upgrade your wall adapter, or better, hook it up to an old car battery. you need a power supply with 2 amps minimum (2000MA) for this little guy to work well. A computer PC source is a good fit, or a 12V Laptop adapter putting out 2 amps.

i have two Turnigy nano-tech 180mAh 2S 25C Lipo Pack and i want to charge them at the same time which amp should i use and approx how much time does it need to be fully charged?
 Radron 241 points
I would charge those batteries at .5 volt. As for charging time, that would depend on how far they were discharged
 rider 44 points
Select the lowest charge rate, charge time should be arround 30min i think
 Aristidis.gr 406 points
U sould use 0.5 and take ~30~ min
Nuno  2 points - 2/7/2012

Another thing.. Imagine that I'm charging two batteries 2S at the same time... And I've choosen a charge rate of 0.5A. Each battery will take 0.5A per hour or 0.25A per hour?

I got these charger. First of all.. Green leds? They are blue :O And at the beggining everything was going good but now sometimes the charger turns off while charging. You have got any idea of what may be?
 rider 44 points
It must be some mixup in factory, contact HK support, they should replace it!
 Nuno 2 points
I use it with a 12V output adapter on the wall. May this be the problem? The adapter works at 1A and I charge batteries only with 0.5A... Shouldn't be no problem.. And It has work well with it several times.. but now...
 rider 44 points
Could be a problem - i use it with 4A power supply and i never had a problem.
 Nuno 2 points
Can you show me that 4A power suplly? My email: diogo_calcada*hotmail**** Thank you very much.
 rider 44 points
It's not a bought item - homemade switching PS. But you can buy even more powerfull PS from HK shop - under batteries**->power supply.

But can you show me how you did it?

Hi to all!
Im planning to buy this charger for "Turnigy nano-tech 2200mah 2S 25~50C Lipo Pack" battery.
Can you tell what other cables I need?
Also while charging it, what charge rate to use?
Im new here..Thanks!
 Martin 13 points
You need a 12v power supply or you can plug it in you car. You don't need other cable, you will charge you battery via the balancing cable. You plug the balancing cable from your battery direct to the charger. This is a good charger.
 rider 44 points
just plug it in lighter plug in your car, battery is connected via balance plug (on battery), choose 2A rate and that's it - you'll get green lights on charger when battery is full.

Hi. Can I get a charger like this, and (independently of the time it takes to charge), put 2 packs to charge in parallel? [these would be 4S-5000ma-LiPo ones]. Explaining some more, I need it to be as simple as turn power on and get the job done. I want to set parameters if needed only once in the system lifetime, then control the charge/discharge(use) process using a control logic and drivers. Thanks guys
 Dominic 7 points
You could charge 2 2s packs at once, but only one 4s. Also it only charges up to 2amps so it will take more than 2 hours to charge your 5000mah battery.
Andrew  1 points - 11/11/2011

could i plug this into the wall if i use a 12v output adapter and how long should it take to charge
 dibedu 117 points

Can this charger be adapted for use with Life Cells?
 Daveb50 42 points
No, this is strictly a lipo charger. If you want to charge life cells, get the Accucel 6 charger.
 Hansc 373 points
No this is for lipo's, get a accucel 6 charger from here for multiple charging options.
 Hugomez 30 points
Buy another charger, imax b6 for example, is the best boots you can find and is much cheaper than this. greetings

Anyone tried connecting multiple chargers together yet ? Like two chargers to be able to charge a 8 cell battery or three charges to be able to charge four 3s battery's at once etc ? I think it would be possible as they do not seam to have shared ground on the charging pins..
 Hansc 373 points
Just tried that for you and yes it works. At least I don't get any smoke. Great idea, never though of it.

Has any one tried to charge a single cell with this charger (modified lead of course) ? I don't see why it wouldn't considering this charger tries to charge discrete cells (in lieu of the cell discharge approach).
 HobbyKing_Admin 8862 points
It's a parallel charger, not MCU controlled. So I think it is not a problem to charge 1S with a modified lead.

hi there !!
i will be using this chatger for my Rc Car bt have a few questions

1.)will this charger charge a 2s 5000mah 20c pack ?
2.)in how long would it charge that pack ?
3.)can i cut off the 12V car plug and put on a 220V wall socket plug ?

THANKS !!
 H-KING_SCOTT 5161 points
It would charge a pack of that size but take around 2-3 hours, no, you can't connect it to 220v, it will pop, 12v supply only.
 knuflyer 24 points
It will charge any 2S to 4S pack, regardless of mah rating, but obviously it will take longer for more amps. Since this charger has a selector switch for charge rates, you can set the switch to 2Amps and, theoretically, it should take a little over 2 hours to charge, but since it uses a tapering charge, this will probably be longer. And NO, you cannot just plug this into 220v!!
 Evren 1 points
I just got this charger but here is my opinion: 1) yes 2) at 2A it should take about 3 hours. 3) No! you can not convert a 12v device to 220v device by changing its plug. However you can get a 12V adapter (min 60W-75W) and connect it to the cable... (which I am doing right this moment!)
 Ionshock 134 points
I just received this charger too. Mine has ridiculously bright blue & red LEDs instead of green & red ones. I cut the end off and soldered on another lead and am using a 14V power supply to charge it. Working fine so far..
 Massimiliano Maria 9 points
per una 5000 ci vuole circa 80minuti per alimentarlo a corente e meglio di tanti altri perche ha un voltaggio di esercizio da 9 a 15 volz basta avere un trasformatore 12 volt almeno 3 amp
 tonyFS 2 points
1. Yes it'll just take longer. 2. an't got a 5000mah pack to try but I'm guessing about 3-4 hrs. 3. Yes, put 240V plug on it and see what happens. I'm seeing a bright flash and a lot of smoke, lol. You will need a transformer rated over 2 amp.
 bas 7 points
it charges in 2 hours, needs 12-15 volt
 meat1968 9 points
Yes it will charge the Tunigy 500 mah 40c lipos. It takes about 45 min to 1 hour to charge them. It depends on how discharged they are. So I bet it will have no probs with the 20c.
NO DONT PUT A 120V PLUG ON IT!!!!! It is a 12 volt charger. It will work well with a fully charged car battery the will be aprox 14.4 volts.
I have been useing this charger for about 1 year and it has been beter than more expensive chargers. Plug in your battery and watch the leds. You still have to watch the charge
 milo69 61 points
Im on my second unit now the old one lasted 2years the new blue lights are great as if your colour blind the red green combo sucks.

at Radio Shack or a store like it they will sell wall plug adapters that you can plug the 12v plu into and then plug it into a wall socket, i do it right now and it works perfectly

Will the IMAX Power Supply 100~240v 5A (item 6477) work with this charger. If so do I need adapters. Does the DC plug plug into the charger? And would this charger work with this battery http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem
.asp?idProduct=8580 Thank
you
 rcnewbie 9 points
Charger has a maximum charge rate of 2Amps. So yes charger and power supply would work together. Charger is designed to plug into cigarette lighter in automobile. Charger would need plug that would fit into IMAX power supply. Any computer store should have.
 bas 7 points
yo also can use croccedille clamps to connect
william  2 points - 1/20/2011

does this charger work with every brand of lipo? also what kind of plugs come with it? thanks
 rcnewbie 9 points
Li-Po's balance plug plugs into base. The charge port connection fits all Polymax, hexTronik, Dualsky, Align, Kokam etc.. battery ports. Look at base of charger in picture!!
 Evren 1 points
If lipos have the normal balance connector and 2-4 cells, there shouldnt be any problem. It only comes with a car cigaratte lighter plug. If you use it at home, you need a 12V adapter and perhaps you might have to modify the cable for using it.
 Erich 2 points
if the lipo uses the normal jst balancing plug than yes. i have noticed that thunder power batteries are not compatible. there are no extra charging plugs included
Clayton  10 points - 11/22/2010

and if it doesn't which one would be the best choice?

Yes only for 2 7v batteries.
Clayton  10 points - 11/22/2010

does this charger need a power supply?
 787Dreamliner 7 points
Yes, it needs a dc power supply for direct use, like your car
 rcnewbie 9 points
Yes!! It is designed to plug into the cigarette lighter in your car( the car battery is the power supply). The black thing in picture plugs into cigarette lighter. A simple 5 watt power supply would also work. HK uses this charger to balance and charge packs sent back to them by customers under warranty returns.
 knuflyer 24 points
it comes with a plug that fits into a car power socket (lighter socket)
 Evren 1 points
Yes, unless you use it in a 12v car using the car cigarette socket.
 Ryan 1 points
no it comes with a cigarette lighter plug so you can use it in your car but you will need one if you want to hook it up inside
 Erich 2 points
no it is ready for direct use in your car's cigarette lighter port. but you will need an adapter (available at radio shack) to plug it into the wall

Just received on of these. Does a great charging/balancing job (DVM shows 4.11/4.10/4.10!) but LEDS are blue/red instead of green/red as mentioned in the manual. Is this a design change? If so it may be worth changing the documentation. If not what de the blue lights mean?
 jwmustang 6 points
Design change.
 rcnewbie 9 points
Green and red look the same to color-blind people. Blue means same as green. Now color-blind people can use charger also!!! Great little charger, love mine!!!

75 thumbs up!
I bought this charger a year ago and it really brought me to the world of LiPo.

Charger uses natural balancing method. It has four semi-independent channels and every cell is charged separately - if the cell is fully charged, channel is switched off and relevant LED changes light from red to green. The pack is fully balanced when all cells are charged. If some cell is damaged and cannot be charged, current is cut off and relevant LED stars to blink (at least it should - fortunately I do not have damaged cell yet).

You can charge two 2s pack at the same time and even more - you can charge packs with different capacity. Just don't forget to set current according to pack with smaller capacity. Sometimes I charge 2S1100 in one slot with 2s1800 in second. I suppose it can charge even single cells of different capacity combined together with some kind of adapter, this could be interesting for people flying with very small one cell planes (but only 500mAh and more if you follow safety recommendation, because minimum charging current is 0.5A). And opposite - individual handling of every cell gives you possibility to charge easily packs of five or more cells in two or more steps.

Charger can also load packs without balancer connector and it still monitors charging. I built one 2-cell pack without balancer connector (I had none at that moment). Pack became unbalaced after sixth cycle (3.48 and 3.50 before charge, but 4.13 and 4.18 after charge), charger somehow detected it i

I had a problem that my battery packs (HXT-D9-2200mAh 3S 20-30C) started to get out of balance more and more. I could not get the "perfect balance". I found a way of balancing the packs closer to "perfect balance" with this charger.
When all LED's are green (finished charging), I unplug the pack and plug it back in. [Other balance chargers I tried this with, does nothing and just switch the LED's back green]
I even did this a third time on one pack. The final voltage also increased with 0,1 or 0,2 V.
On th "noisy fan": it is a normal PC type fan. Take out fan, lift sticker in the center of the fan to open the bearing. Add a drop of fine machine oil. Close sticker and replace fan.

I really love this charger. The concept of KISS ( Keep It Simple Stupid ) is 100pcnt there with that product!

The build quality is very good, all aluminium. Charging is sort of very simple and stupid proof. It was a 5Amp car fuse on the back. It has rubber feet on the bottom. Some solid silkscreen/sticker on top. It is bullet proof!

When you plug a 3 cell into the charger, 3 RED led will glow and then after it is finish, it will turn to GREEN.

If there is a bad cell, the specific LED will flash from RED to GREEN.

You can charge battery using what they call "parallel" charging. So you charge your 3 cell with only 2 wire at 11.8V instead of 3 time 3.7V.
You need special plug to do that.

The fans does make noise. It is not that bad but it makes noise.

The only thing that I don't like is the 12V car adapter. I don't want to cut it and will need to make my own socket.

After charging my 4 cell battery. I had
4.181V
4.203V
4.199V
4.184V

my other battery was
4.196V
4.209V
4.207V
4.180V

I highly recommend this charger!

Have fun!

End charge voltage were 3 times 4.18volts and channel 3 was 4.15V but it's OK.
Supplied with cigar lighter plug.
Electronic is very well made 105°C capacitor. Solder has been cleaned. 100pcnt reliable.
You can charge 4 cell at a time and select from 0.5 to 2A current for all cell.
You can charge 2 x 2cells at one time.
Fan made some noise but it's OK.
Price is low and product is very good!!!
