im using 8xAA. what the lowest voltage i could set warning signal?
 EffinA 1299 points
On a stock 9x, you cannot set the low voltage warning. If you are using alkaline, probably you will be fine to 11V, on NiMHs, 9V. If I were you, I would use the AA pack on a simulator only. The pack is cheap, and unreliable. Mine would drop power all the time (found it on the ground), so I placed a Zippy Flightmax 1800 in it's place (modifying the connector), and problem solved.
 Arvydas 2 points
the reason why im using 8xAA, i have good brand NiMHs pack.btw mine sofware ER9X.
 EffinA 1299 points
Awesome! That will work quite nicely. do recommend that you fully discharge your NiMhs occasionally, even though they are said to mot have memory effect, they really do. In the case of NiMHs, they have a linear discharge to them, but I would not trust them below 9V.
 Arvydas 2 points
yes im always discharging before fully charging.so set 9V alarm and should be great?
 EffinA 1299 points
Yes, just remember that at 9V, you should be ready to land, because it won't last too long. All good!

HI, Which battery works for this TX? I need a battery for the RX too? Thanks
 v_max 377 points
TX work with 8AA batteries/NiMhAccus (battery holder included) OR with any 3S lipo which fits battery compartment (110x30x32). For example Rhino 2620mAh 3S 11.1v Low-Discharge Transmitter Lipoly Pack ID: (R2620-TX-3 ) RX sure requires power too (4.5-6v) here you may power it with 4xAA size or from UBEC or from ESC with BEC.
 hermit81 1585 points
for transmitter i use ZIPPY Flightmax 2500mAh (ID: ZIP25003S3C). about receiver - v_max said is true

which receiver lightweight (lightweight) for use in a bixler the right to with that 9x
 Microguy 15 points
well, the reciever that comes with the transmitter is pretty lightweight
 hermit81 1585 points
also hk 6ch ID: (HK-T6A-V2) - on five grams lighter :) if you take off your Plastic cover case - will be even easier :)
 EffinA 1299 points
On a bixler, you are not pressed too bad for weight, so the 8 channel RX will work. There is a good RX from flysky that works nice with the 9x, the FS-R6B, which I like. it is very small, and light, but has great range. I would say kind of borderline for FPV, but excellent for line of sight.

V_MAX I'm ordering the FrSky ACCST combo. When I install it, do I need to take the 9x factory antenna off?
 v_max 377 points
Yes, to remove the stock module you need to unsolder antenna wire inside stock module, then untighten antenna fixing screw and you can remove stock antenna. With the stock antenna wire, you can't put other module in 9x

 James 4 points
I am feeling my way through the un-solder process. The module is on order so I have a little more time to understand the un-solder process.

 EffinA 1299 points
You'll get it, patience! If you had it sent by Singpost, it takes a week to show that it is shipped. You will get your TX within a month, as I did with the 9x, 9xr, Icon A5, QBot, Frsky combo, etc.

Anyone having trouble with the range of the 9x? Jakub says he gets 2km. That would be great. Anyone having trouble?
 v_max 377 points
The range is very strong dependent on conditions. EMF polution level from WiFi / celluar stations / High voltage lines e.t.c, It also strongly depend on antennas quality and placement. Third factor is power of RX, use low path filter (just a ferrite coil) on each connection to RX (power and signal). In ideal case you probably can hit 2km but 800m - 1km is more realistic for stock module of Turnigy 9X. For extra range over 2km, better choice is FrSky ACCST combo (module and RX).

FrSky DJT 2.4Ghz Combo Pack for JR w Telemetry Module & V8FR-II RX (ID: JR-Combo )
 v_max 377 points
But if you will decide to use this combo instead then you probably would prefere to get 9XR instead of 9X. At least you wouldn't need to desolder turnigy module antenna. And will have some nice features, like reflash connector and backlight.
 James 4 points
I bought the 9x a moth ago. Now I just trying to give myself every advantage at the field. I bought the Imax B6 charger, Turnigy 2300mah 4.8v, and now the Rino 2620. Your advice has been very good and helpful. Thank you!

it has CE certification? Are there problems with customs in Germany?
 georgiev.s 13 points
On the backside it is labeled as CE and FC. As far as I know there arent any problems in Germany. But Im not sure if its 100% legal, because of the Singalpower. You can also put in a FrSky-Modul, which I think is legal. Hope this helps *)

I bought the Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter w/ Module & 8ch Receiver (Mode 2) (v2 Firmware)almost a month ago but was only able to use it last saturday may 11, 2013 due to my schedule. I used it for the Hobbyking Bixler 2 EPO 1500mm w/ Brushless Motor, Servos and Optional Flaps (ARF) using the following electronics: Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter w/ Module & 8ch Receiver (Mode 2) (v2 Firmware), Turnigy AE-45A Brushless ESC, Turnigy 2200mAh 3S 30C Lipo Pack. my question is HOW FAR IS REALLY THE RANGE OF THIS 2.4GHZ RADIO? the reason for my question is because after about 500m, I had absolutely no control with the bixler. and when i tried to run after it, it seems that the communication of the TX/RX goes on and off. is there someone who experienced this? and was able to find out what's going on? all your inputs will be greatly appreciated. thanks to all in advance.
 Jakub 34 points
I have exactly the same transmitter. I'm using 3s 2500mAh LiPo and everything works correctly. My transmitter has much longer range than 500m. Some time ago i tested it and i lost range after 2km (good conditions without buildings, trees, etc.). Please try to use different power supply for Transmitter and Receiver. What is your receiver's power supply?

So if I buy a 11.1v lipo for the tx I might fry the radio after long use. SO.... If I go mah I could use Turnigy 9.6v 2000mah battery...???
 roger_fci 20 points
You can use any 3s battery, which can burn the TX is the voltage, not the current, the greater the capacity (in mAh)greater autonomy.
 Gerry01 2871 points
James, the 9X is made to handle more than 12V as main power supply, it has internal regulators. You can use either 9.6v LiFe, or 11.1 Lipo, or 12V alkalines (8 AA batteries). No problem at all. I even use my old lipos to feed the Tx, since power need of the Tx is low, any old lipo can be reused (as long as it fits the compartment).

The radio is set up to be used with a LiPo TX pack. Check out "ZIP25003S3C" ZIPPY Flightmax 2500mAh Transmitter Pack (Futaba/JR) OR "R2620-TX-3" Rhino 2620mAh 3S 11.1v Low-Discharge Transmitter Lipoly Pack OR "T2650.3S.1C" Turnigy 2650mAh 3S 1C LLF Tx Pack (Futaba/JR). There are more options as well, just make sure they have the correct Futaba or JR servo style discharge plug and you should be set. I'm using the Rhino above. Hope this helps!

do the 9x turnigy will burn if i will use this battery zippy 2500mah 3c tx pack at full charge 12.6v?
 IBeHoey 382 points
If the battery you mention is a Life pack, as opposed to Lipo, you'll be fine as the individual cell voltage of a Life pack is a bit lower than a Lipo (3.3 vs 3.7). If it is a Lipo, it may not immediately burn out the 9x but over time, that extra strain, could cause the built in voltage regulator to fail. :D

 EffinA 1299 points
I am assuming that is a TX LiPo pack, which it would be better to use a LiFe battery. Be very careful to make sure the polarity of the pack is correct, so as not to mess up your TX. there have been horror stories about this. I recommend the Zippy Flightmax 3s LiFe, either 1800 (which I have) or 2500mA is fine too. You have to put your own connector onto either of these packs, so remember that, and you will need a charger that will charge LiFe bateries, like the Imax B6.
 Aristidis.gr 405 points
In my opinion it will work just fine!!!
 IBeHoey 382 points
EffinA is right on about expressing the importance of making sure you get the polarity right. :D I still stand by the importance of choosing a 3S LiFe pack over a typical LiPo pack. If you were to go over to the RCGroup forums you'll find several topics/horror stories of people burning out the voltage regulator in their 9Xs after using a 3S LiPo. If you must use a LiPo pack with this Tx, then I'd recommend wiring a diode in series with the pack to lower the voltage a bit. As I said before, using a 3S LiPo with this Tx might not cause it to burn out right away, but over time, it'll take its toll. Why take such a risk?
Succar  3 points - 5/13/2013

Can someone show to me which usb cable should I use with this transmitter? Thanks Succar
 EffinA 1299 points
Here is what you need: First, get a Smartiparts board, and install it. After that, you will need a USB ASP programming card for Amtel processors. I am assuming you want to reflash the firmware, unless you are using it for a flight simulator, which I would recommend Phoenix. If you are setting it up for a flight simulator, you will have to remove the module while using it, or do the trainer port hack found on YouTube.
 IBeHoey 382 points
Doesn't the smartieparts board come with a USBasp programmer built in? If you're comfortable with a soldering iron, installing the wires needed to reflash the 9x with a USBasp programmer is quite easy. As far as setting the 9x to use with a sim, effina is right on. :D
 Succar 3 points
Guys, I'm just starting and I want to buy a transmiter which I can use with in a simulator too. I want to spend up to US$ 100,00 which model do u think is the best choice? Futaba is too expensive, but I sdont want also to buy one that needs to be opened and changed. doesn't sounds good to me...
 IBeHoey 382 points
Hey Succar, for the money you can't go wrong with the 9X. Being new and starting out, the 9X is probably more than what'll you'll need, or looking for, but this is a good thing as you'll grow in to it. To do what you're wanting to do, you wont have to open it up, or make any modifications to work. At the very least, in order to use it with a sim, you'll just have to unplug the RF module from the back of the radio. No biggie. Down the road, as you grow and become more familiar with the hobby, you can then opt to do some of the modifications EffinA and I mention, but even then, it's totally optional. It's for this reason that I stand by the 9x 100%. Out of the box, it'll do everything you'll want it to, but there's always that option to modify it, and make it do more. :D

 EffinA 1299 points
Succar, turnigy 9xr. It will work with simulators right out of the box. You will need the battery for it too. If you are using it just for the simulator, you don't need any module.
 EffinA 1299 points
IBeHoey, I don't think the smatrieparts board has the USB ASP programmer, just a way to connect to it.
 IBeHoey 382 points
Hey EffinA, I just looked it up and it does come with a built in USB programmer (for $36 it better). The 9XR is a nice radio but for someone brand new to the hobby, it might be a bit overwhelming having to pick out a proper RF module and a proper battery pack to go with it. For the, roughly, $4 difference in price (9X w/ module $54, 9XR wo/ module $50.22) I personally think the 9X is a better value for someone starting out. Not to mention, if they don't already have something to fly and plan to only use it with a sim for the time being, they can just pop in some AA batteries and be good to go. Verses with the 9XR, they're going to need to order a proper battery pack, and a charger to go along with it. That's just my opinion. :D
 Succar 3 points
Thanks a Lot guys! You answered my uestions and I learned what is Biggie! New word to me lol. :D
 EffinA 1299 points
Ok, now I know more about the smartieparts board. I was thinking about flashing my 9x, but I haven't. I did do the mod for the trainer port, but that is it. I know there are plenty of people with the 9x who will not go near a 9xr, so that is cool. I have them both, and I use them both, no real big difference in the operation, just the firmware, and I like the gimbals a little, tiny bit better. When I am dealing with reliability, I am using the 9x on my fastest plane, because of reliability. The 9xr is still being proved worthy, but has been doing a great job.
 IBeHoey 382 points
No problem Succar, glad I could help. :D Yeah, with the smartieparts board, I can see it being helpful for someone who is absolutely terrified of doing any kind of soldering on their 9X. But given its price, I still think you'd be better off just using that money to buy an iron, some solder, and the $5 USBasp programmer. The wiring required is quite simple, the board even has the little pads "broken" out so you can solder on to them. Find an old VCR, or something, and learn to solder on it. After going this route, you'll not only have the tools required to flash the board, but you'll also have learned a very valuable skill set that is soldering. I, for one, don't have anything against the 9XR, the fact it comes preloaded with ER9X really speaks volumes about it. I do have to say that I'm not a huge fan of the giant plastic handle it has. I don't know what it is, but it just doesn't look right lol. What RF module did you opt to go with?
 IBeHoey 382 points

 Succar 3 points

 Succar 3 points
Even with 2 posts I just saw your question now. Does it came with a RF module? I saw the orange one but I thought was an better option than the standard one...
 EffinA 1299 points
Yep, the 9x comes with a module, and a receiver, the 9xr does not. The other side is you do not need the module at all while you are flying the simulator. With the 9x, no matter how you try to avoid it, you will eventually, not right away, but eventually, learn to solder. Anyway, happy flying, and choose what you want. either radio is an excellent investment in the hobby, and a 9x or a 9xr is worth MORE second hand than new, check, and you will see.
 EffinA 1299 points
Here is what I did about the cosmetic appearance of my 9xr, and let me tell you, the other RC'ers love it!
 Succar 3 points
Hi EffinA, the problem is in Brazil a second hand radio is more expensive than a new one in HK. Let me know if you know someone that want to sell a Second Hand on in a good shape. *) Succar
 EffinA 1299 points
I would let you know. I was thinking about letting my 9x go, but I am using it for my rescue boat. If I put the rescue boat on the 9xr, I will have a conflict with my Icon A5, which is the plane that could require the rescue. It's complicated, so I won't bore you with that.

I use a Zippy Flightmax 1800. I had to rewire mine for the 9x, so remember that when you get it.

You can use any 3S lipo which fits battery compartment (32x30x110mm). In most cases you would need to replace lipo connector. Be careful with polarity. TX do not have protection from battery reverse.

Very confusing. I have been flying since 69 (Kraft reed) and have seen a lot of new things for the industry. I have been scared to use Lipo because of their history. Now that looks like the only thing selling. I have always been the kind of guy that goes with the boys that brought you to the dance. Change is hard and it is hard to trust new things. Thank you very much for the information!!

James, batteries industry have improved dramatically since then, especially last decade. Forget history. Almost everybody goes with lipos because of their energy density (Volt*Amp per gram) and the relatively life of service without memory effect. You don't have anything to worry about in safety terms if you properly handle and care your batts (i.e. not overcharging, overexhausting or puncturing* correct voltage storage, cell balancing, etc). Just make sure you get a charger with balancer and some fire-proof pouches. I recommend you using XT60 connectors for your settups till continuos 60 amp draw and EC3 or EC5 for bigger ones. The Turnigy nano-tech and Zippy batteries are the ones having the higher energy densities according with data I extracted from this site for over 400 batteries.

I think V_max is right with the Rino TX pack. Their first paragraph says don't use ordinary Lipos because of voltage problems. I'm wondering if my Hobbico Quick Charger MKII Pro will work out. It says it does Lipo.
 EffinA 1299 points
Hey James! There are some inherent issues with LiPos, and to ignore them would not be good. In the case of the turnigy 9xr, you are much better off with a LiFePo4 pack (3s). I use a Zippy Flightmax 1800, which has been plenty strong and reliable. There is also nothing wrong with using NiMhs in this radio, they will work fine. The MKII will charge a LiPo, but I am not sure about a LiFe battery, so if I were you, I would get an Imax B6 (that's what I have, and many people at the flying field) for charging your batteries. After a little reading up on your charger, you want to change it. It is not good on LiPo, so this is your opportunity to upgrade it.

Bought the Imax B6. Now I'm going for the Rino 2620. Thank you!

Im new to radio. What is the different, some says with module and some say without module. What is module?
 hermit81 1585 points
transmitter module need for transmit signal to receiver. if you dont have transmitter module - you need buy him separately
 v_max 377 points
Module is RF module which is actually Radio Frequency part of transmitter. Module and receiver are tightly related because different brands use different communication protocols between module and RX. You hardly can use module of one brand and receiver of other brand. Some of TXs have RF module integrated (just simple txs like HK 4/6ch ) , some (advanced models like this one) has replaceble module in standard dock. So you can change the module for another one if you like ( receiver too on most cases) If you do not have already 2.4GHz equipment then probably bundled system with module and RX is right for you. If you have some you probably prefer to get TX without module and use module compatible with your existing equipment. If you aiming for extra range, then you probably would like to get modulles TX and extra range module and RX like FrSky combos.

14 thumbs up!
I am using an ASSAN hacker modulewith the 9X Tx.
With no recievers available I hooked up the Hacker as follows:
1- Top Pin signal
2- no connection
3- Red plus
4- Black -
5- no connection.

You can see photo's at www.link only gave it 4 stars as the TX did not work as recieved, one of the wires to the dual rate switch was not connected, an easy fix.

9 thumbs up!
I'd give this radio a 5 star rating but there are a few minor things that subtract points.
-One is that putting the batteries is a hassle, the 8 AA cell holder is OK, but the cable gets on the way of the cover and it takes a while to be able to close it, there's a lot of pinching of the cables involved so I shouldn't wonder if the insulation fails sooner or later requiring a replacement of the cables.
-Second is the very annoying and loud BEEEEP!!! you get with every-single-click you do on the buttons, seriously stressing to set up the radio at home, not good for conjugal life. To fix that I cut the leg that goes from a transistor to the speaker and added a 220 Ohm resistor in between.
-Third, no manual comes with the radio.
-Fourth setting up a V-Tail was a mind bending affair, I succeeded but I couldn't grok the logic of the procedure.

Besides those things it's a good product.

I purchased this transmitter & Assan XJ8 module from HC. First I got around the switch error bug (thanks to that reviewer)
For me the Assan XJ8 just flashes red once on start up, but gives no steady red LED & will not go into pairing mode.
Assan say they don't know the problem & suggest putting XJ8 in another TX (I don't have one)
Anyone know how to test if TGY 9X or Assan is the problem? Thanks

Great range - over 3000m, but realy to big receiver. Also dont like to small battery compartment, and antenna linked with wire.
You Also can't mix with AUX cahnnels - you can oly mix first 4 cahnells. No manual - It could be at least link at this product to download manual for Turnigy 9x. Also don,t like that this transsmiter in almost never in stock, or that there smaller 6 ch receivers I waiting for more 3 months So from me only 3 stars.
