Thinking of purchasing this plane. What controller/receiver would you recommend for this aircraft? Also what battery would be recommended, looking for a decent flight time so thinking 2200 but wanted input from people that own the plane.

Whats the best way to set up an air brake on this plane, with flapperons or spoilerons ??? how about the elevator??

what is the biggest 3 cell lipo pack that will fit in it
   Fredylg (67%)
at the moment am fitting a 2200 battery without breaking anything and is really tight, if you cut some foam I think you'll able to fit a bigger battery but whats the point?? with a 2200 I get 40 minutes of flight

Is this a good candidate for FPV? I'm using something similar right now, and I would like to replace the airframe with this one.The existing floater can take a lot of weight. How much useful weight can this plane take?

you can, some put hd cam at 120 gr =)

Hi I found AX-2210N here at hobby King. Note that its a lower RPM version of the original motor, so have also ordered a 6*4 and 6*5 propeller. Original Motor is AX-2208N. At 1130 KV (approx 12430 rpm no load, verses AX-2210N at 11770) It should be OK. Spec sheets at ************.rcgroups****/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2528537 say prop speed of 8004 rpm. Also check out ************.rc-model.cn/Motor.htm for full specs. (This site mentioned in the forum for the AX-2210N. Thanks Bellakelpie for that. Cheers Mike

My plane arrived and the motor "kicked back" on occasion making a clicking sound and if the throttle retarded too quickley the motor would go into a spasm!. After 9 successful flights the motor spasmd (some sort of harmomnic fequency overdrive?) and then smoked Now the ESC still makes its first initialisation beeps but never brings the motor on line. I am not sure if the motor or ESC was/is at fault, so I shall replace both but would like to know what is the correct Motor and ESC to use as replacements? Thanks anyone
   mikec@aloha.net (0%)
replaced the esc and the prop to a 5x5. runs great with (so far) no glitches. the result is a cool motor and esc. this is absolutely my favorite plan. are the servos the same size as the hxt 900?

What are the motor specs?
   Kevin (34%)
I need to know everyones saying the axn floater jet stock esc is garbage... I just ordered the plane and it shipped with a Turnigy AE-20A 2ABEC 2-4S LI-PO is this the one everyone is saying is no good or is this a new esc in the kit from another kind of esc??? im confused.
   mikec@aloha.net (0%)
i changed the esc since i put on a 6X4 prop. launched it and while elevating the motor stopped. i glided it down. the motor started to glitch and then nothing. the esc was hot and i didn't have it on long. also, i wasn't pushing it. i'm a glider. only had half throttle. it was all i needed, but it was too much for the esc. i changed the esc to a 25 - 30a* hobby king ss series. will report later how it does.
   Thomas Adamidis (90%)
Hi, I've been flying cloudsfly for more than a year with stock setup, no problem except that some motor magnets came loose. Luckily i saw it before launch. My ESC is a no name 20A ESC in yellow shrink tube. latelly i changed the prop to 6x4, no probleb so far. I don't fly full throttle for long period of time, just enough to get me into gliding hight :)
   mikec@aloha.net (0%)
using the 25/30 esc, the motor glitches still but not as bad. i never use full throttle because half throttle is all i need to get the height i want. this plane been above a real airplane and once in the clouds. if you don't push the motor, it's fine. i'm going to change to a 5 inch prop. more throttle required, but cooler esc. i'll still achieve the height i want.

This plane flies so well. It glides and easily stays up in the air a long while. I want to share some things I did. Tape the wings - sometimes they come loose in flight. Use a prop adapter. I lost a prop in flight due to the rubber band lost its elasticity. Then, tape the servos for the ailerons. Mine got loose in flight. Fortunately I had rudder and was able to land the plane. The next upgrade I will do is replace the servos, esc, and possibly the motor. The motor seems fine but glitches due to the esc. I will try programming the esc. I'll keep the motor awhile longer. Overall, this is my favorite plane to fly.

Can somebody measure the diameter/length of the carbon fiber wing joiner rod? I lost mine and I need to find a replacement.
   LDriess (30%)
Just measure the hole in the wings. I glued mine together today so I can't measure it for you, but i'd say 8mm diamater by 750mm long.

I want to buy this plane for my 11 year old son who wants to start flying. What 4Ch Transmitter & Reciever and what battery pack would be best to buy for this plane? Be aware.... I have no idea what I'm talking about :-)
   nataz6 (76%)
Hi, I bought the Hobbyking 6ch transmitter and receiver but you can get away with buying the HK 4ch for this planes. I highly recommend using zippy flightmax 2200mah 3s1p batteries with this plane. Great choice by the way, your son will love it. :)
   maestros (55%)
Try a Hobbyking 4ch Digital transmitter, it's great to start with and also has low cost. I would recommend a zippy flightmax 3s 1800mAh for this plane. With the 1300mAh battery (as HK recommends) the plane is tail heavy and the plane will be easy to crash.
2200mAh will be alot nose heavy. With the 1800mAh i found a perfect balance or else CG (Center of Gravity).
cheers
   Snuffalupagus (-1%)
an 1800 pack will be sweet in this plane. for a radio I'd recommend a specktrum DX5 with an AR 500 receiver (can be had for around 100 dollars as a set) this is an excellent plane - makes a good trainer for high speed planes like the Stryker or EDF jets very responsive and fun to fly, but not boring. has no real bad habits if equipped with an 1800 pack.
   Pete (34%)
The transmitter and receiver is largely dependent on what you want to spend. Spektrum makes great transmitters that are easy to use, however they are expensive. Hobbyking makes a 2.4ghz transmitter and receiver combo as well that takes a little more work due to ***r instructions but would work well also. I have this plane and I fly a zippy flightmax 2200 mah 3s lipo(20C). It works great and flies fantastically.
   mikec@aloha.net (0%)
i am using the hk 2.4 ghz transmitter and receiver. works great! i am also using two 1300 and one 1600 3s 20c lipo batteries. on calm days with light wind, the 1300's are great being light it gets up high and floats a long time. the 1600 lipo, i get great height with a little stable flight due to the weight. i think the 1800 will be better. flight times for the 1300s are 40 minutes plus, including gliding. the longest was 44 minutes. i think 2 or 3 1300's are fine for flying a long time.

you can make a canopy out of a big pop bottle, and the fuse can be fixed with hot glue if you snapped it just behind the motor

I have for about a month since I bought Clouds Fly been flying with the propeller the wrong way. Because I've been so satisfied with this model I was not aware of it till a guy mentioned it. ( - He claimed I might loose 1/3 of the effect. Is this true and will I notice any major difference? What speed is it possible to reach with this plane? Thanks :)
   BCBasher (85%)
I'd guess 60mph level, a little faster and more eficient cruise with a 6X4. Learn how to put your prop on right you should cruise at 1/2 throttle but all the power you can muster ca get you out of (or in to) trouble *)
   Kaffine (23%)
Yeah i did a similar thing, I don't know if it was a third better maybe just noticable. Change it anyway, the prop is shaped to work in one direction and it does sound different and if it gets noticed at the local park you might get a few chuckles.
   Pete (34%)
Yes, the propeller direction definitely matters. The blades are shaped in a way to maximize power/efficiency and will be significantly decreased if placed on backwards. Your top speed depends on your battery. I use a 2200mah 3s 20-25C lipo and I estimate it gets to about 60 mph out of a dive.

right under the channel the carbon tube goes in, It's the "wing spar" and is a good starting cg for most straight wing planes.

How do you remove the rubber bands adapter and use an alumium prop adaptor, or do you just connect it at the end.
   BCBasher (85%)
The rubber adaptor is part of the motor bell so no. You can cut the shaft a little if you feel ambitious but you don't have to.

Golph246 (34%)
can you use a 6x4 prop. on it
   BCBasher (85%)
Yes, tgs 6X4 sport or similar, I'd limit full throttle to 5sec bursts but cruise would be more eficent the 5X5 is too small to try and save the stock esc.

hi,

the included prop saver rings are 18mm en 2mm thick.
i don't seem to find them on the site.

any sugestion witch one to use ?
   BCBasher (85%)
Ditch the rubber bands altogether the prop is completly protected. Use an alumium prop adaptor like this.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8722&aff=49785

I got the 3/16" and had to ream the adaptor rings but it works great. Two trees and a 50 foot spin into the ground and I'm still on my first prop.

how come the delivery weight is so much more than the ASW foam glider when the flying weight is much less than the ASW? It does not make sense. I can buy an EZ at LHS for about the same as the Floater jet plus delivery. Doesn't make sense on the cost and weight for delivery.
   BCBasher (85%)
An EZ KIT vs a floater jet ARF? I'm sure HK will drop their pants a little more because of that apples to organges comparison. Serously I got my FJ with 3 spare servos a camera and a bunch of other spare parts for under $200 including $60 shipping. Any LHS around here can't touch that price they'd want $70 just for the camera. Maybe brick and mortar hobby shops are cheaper on your planet, I should move there.
   apolmc (19%)
The servos that came with my Pitts two failed lucky not during flight and F-18 Blue Angel one failed. Rather order servos battery from HK but not so sure about kits One day servos in kit might fail inflight. EZ LHS $90 airframe only buy electronics from HK HXT 900. Using DX6i but ordered Turnigy 9 Channel Transmitter for SU-47:)
   BCBasher (85%)
I can't speak for the pitts but the FJ servos fail because people arn't flexing (breaking in) the hinges first. I bought spare servos incase but mine are holding up fine.
   apolmc (19%)
Yeah hinges are stiff I will take that advise but the HXT 900 holding up so happy with that. AXN is a clone of the EZ. There are many clones of of the EZ but I have to say that the AXN looks better with sleeker lines. Wish they had just airframe.
   BCBasher (85%)
Be careful flexing though, I put fibreglass tape across the hingeline. Mine are starting to split down the seam I watch them and add a strip of tape as needed. I do this in all my planes with this type of hinges, if they start to seperate and flutter at speed they'll tear themselves off.
   marshall (50%)
beacuse of packaging, the floater jet needs a cardboard coccon to keep it safe in transit
   apolmc (19%)
Should rehinged as aileron servo failed after third flight crashed into chain link fence. Looks ugly now :(It probably will still fly but what a downer was so pretty.
I think I might just get an ASW EPO and re hinge that one.

Noticed 4 or 5 lose magnets in bell housing after five months of flying 2-3 times a week. Plan to use FC28-12 motor and standard collette instead of prop saver that came with orig motor. I'm still of the opinion that it's the play in the prop that is overheating the motor causing the magnets to unglue.
   BCBasher (85%)
Mine comes down cool with a SS30a (med timing) and alu adaptor. I don't get out 2-3 times a week latly but I'll check my magnets.

Just bought this plane..(never flight it)
the Equipment ESC is getting little hot in touch just even when i am testing servos .
I reprogram the ESC with a Programming Card and make timing to middle.
I dont know if this will work or destroy the motor.. But the conclusion is that everywhere i look they say change the ESC,and this pisses me off...
What sould we do with the ESC then, burn it or fly it
   BCBasher (85%)
You can fly it...

   epo flyer (17%)
hat is sometimes normal happened two mine i never changed it and havent had anythin else happen still works
   SPITFACED (60%)
What Was That Landing???
   BCBasher (85%)
There was smoke pouring out and I didn't have the option to get back to where I planned on landing. Nice thing about epo is if you don't have enough runway you can use a bush. That was an exelent emergency landing I don't mess around when I see smoke. If my esc is on fire I don't expect to have control for very long, I didn't even break my tilt mount.
   kf52t (-28%)
Replace the ESC it is a must with this model.
   BCBasher (85%)
or set the timing to med? It looked like a nice esc. If you replace SS series are bulletproof.
   Rainsva (0%)
Replace ESC. Mine burned on the 2nd flight. I replaced mine with another (good brand) 20A one, but it's still getting very hot on 2/3 throttle. So what I think os that it's just too small for the engine. I added a radiator to it (took from some old motherboard), but better try 25 or 30A ESC.
   Ujjwaana (17%)
Save the ESC for smaller scratch build Foamies...I would use it with Turnigy Plush 18Amp ESC... cute bird to risk with cheap ESC/Servos.
   BCBasher (85%)
I've never puyt a meter on mine but read this pulls 18 amps stock I'd go with at least a 25-30A incase you want to prop up. Mine goes vert now with a 6X4, it seems to use less power to cruise but can use more if I gun it.
   dranerk (75%)
About the stock ESC: mine was converted into a one time smoke generator with a typical smell of a test run of the crematorium around the corner from where I live. The burning of this ESC is not so bad as was the side effect of melting the housing of the rudder rod and glueing the rudder rod to the housing.
I was not aware of this and with a new ESC in place while testing I heard the rudderservo doing some tooth-scratching while the rudder did not move.
So I had to force (damaging the fuselage over half the length)the melted rudderrod housing and rod from the plane. It's OK now and ready for the 4th day in the field.

In reguard to timming I set mine to medium and have gotten better throttle response.
A programing card is easier and shows the status of your ESC. Thats how I found out the timming was factory set to low.

1/05/2010
AGNOGHT (69%)
I found a good motor for the floater jet. I just installed a hexTronik 24gram Brushless Outrunner 3000kv motor with an APC 4.1X4.1 prop and a turnigy plush 25A ESC. Static with a full battery I am pulling 20.2A on a 3 cell 2200 20C flightmax battery. Noise is about the same at WOT as OEM. Motor does not produce a lot of low end torque but the speed is great. Also smaller prop means a lot less drag when glidering, prop doesn't spin, even with break off. I got rid of the prop saver and replaced it with a 3mm collet to hold the prop. I really like this motor, even though it's rated for only 180W it will handle a little more and come down cool. Also the weight and size are very low!

I would take a tie wrap, cut of the end and glue a few to the bottom to act as a skid. That way you are not loosing foam, but you don't have extra weight. Anyways epoxy and tie wraps are cheap!
   Cliff (50%)
The easiest thing that comes to mind is gluing a music wire axle to the bottom of the fuselage about even with the leading edge of the wing. Reinforce with a few layers of glued on paper over the top of it. Four wheel collars to hold a pair of wheels in place.

   BCBasher (85%)
Don't put "lots" of anything on an RC plane. 1-2 layers replaced regularly. Wing skids are hardly neseicary the bottom is flat enough if your wing tips touch the ground you are landing wrong.

Hi, I use this: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9375 This tape protect my plane on crazy landing with out any serious damage.

cut up a coca cola bottle and stick it to the under side of the fuse. you can heat it with a heat guy and mould it around the nose if necessary

Hey guys what is the avarage time you waited for this , from the time you hit the buy button until item is ousited your door?
   yonizach (44%)
With the current situation, volcano in Europe and the warehouse delays, it will probably take while. mine came 13 days from restocking, before the above events happened.
   BOOF_16 (34%)
It was out of stock when i ordered it so i had to wait for it to come into stock which took 2 days then it go to my house in 14 days so it wasn't too bad.
   gc9n23 (48%)
i order it in stock ,20/4 and now is 26/4 but still processing, i'll wait a little more.
   Orvirt (53%)
I think one or two weeks.
   locksmack (16%)
It took about 10 days (inc weekends) to get to my place in Australia with standard international shipping.
   Cliff (50%)
I have had two orders with these in it. I confess that I delayed making the order till it was in stock, but I have watched the stock come and go around Christmas. I think they get some about once a month. Shipping has always been 2 to 3 weeks for my orders to USA.
   BCBasher (85%)
Less than 2-3 weeks to Canada with rush shipping. Prosecesing varies alot but the actual shiping takes 5-7 days deppending how busy customs is.

Finaly got a Turnigy programing card, Tested out the AXN ESC and the LVC and the timing were both set to low. Just a heads up.
   AGNOGHT (69%)
Hey Mike I have the same card. What's a good timing? What's the timing do for you? I'm just using the default setting right now.
This customer was awarded a credit for their answer.
   Uemit (12%)
Do i really need a programming card for the esc? or can i change the settings with my tx?
   AGNOGHT (69%)
I have read you can change settings with methods other than a programing card depending on the ESC, but I have also read that it's not a very obvious process. The card just makes things easy and simple.
   videomike (68%)
Hi Agnoght
I'm using the medium setting. Motor seems to run smoother and is more respondsive to the throttle. Response is late because the system has been eating up my replies.
   BCBasher (85%)
Would explain why my replacment super simple 30A made it run better than new. Pretty sure they're med. timing stock. Have you tried high timing? I had that with a tp outrunner and a sentry, thing was gutless and ate bateries till I messed with the timing.

there is a reason for that

Amazing piece of work! Saw a friend of mine flying this baby and he caught it with his bare hands while in flight. Steady and steady majestic bird in the sky

thanks* I'm want one

This plane also makes a stable camera platform for the Turnigy mini video camera available on this site. Bolted mine to the front of canopy using mount provided (I use thick rubber band to help hold canopy in place anyhow). Great pics, U tube examples do not do justice to the camera
   BCBasher (85%)
Drives me nuts how youtube does that they look way better on my PC. I have my turnigy dv52 off the right side of the nose on a tilt mount with a 1300mah 3cell it still gets 10mins mixed flying. Just love it can video down or if a bird catches my eye I can tilt up and give chase. I deleted my rudder to free a chanel and rewired my TX to use a dial from a cooked 6ch instead of the rudder stick.

May be mentioned somewhere but.. what is the right and downthrust recommendation?
   BCBasher (85%)
Motor is already mounted none noticable torque is not noticable but it noses down under throttle. If you want to take off with full throtle you need some up trim then dial it out when you throttle back for cruise.
   Alan (82%)
IMHO for longevity, best to trim for 1/2 throttle and only use full power in short bursts as launch and emergency boosts. these budget motor/esc combos seldom live long at full throttle.
   Ghost616 (34%)
Its going to be a bit like a funjet in terms of adjusting CG and downthrust angles to achieve level flight at zero TX trim with no pitching of the plane (up or down) through the throttle range 0-100%.
Begin with fine tuning CG by moving battery and other gear back or forward to get it to glide the way you like it with zero trim and no throttle on the TX ignoring climbing or diving due to high throttle (may take several flights to get it just the way you want it).
Next take note of what happens when you punch the throttle, if it climbs then add a washer between the engine mount and the firewall (top two screws)to create down thrust. If it dives then add them behind the bottom two screws to create upthrust. Repeat the process each flight adding one more washer behind top or bottom screws untill satisfied.
Happt flying :)

Food for thought:

I have ordered this plane 4 times. The most recent 2 planes was for friends who are starting out in the Hobby. Unfortunately, after all the talk about standardizing battery connectors, the planes came with Deans while the batteries we ordered also through HobbyKing came with XT60 connectors. Luckily the 2 RC Plane newbies are not new to soldering and electronics, so they will be modding the batteries with new deans to fit the plane.
I would rather the web retailer rethink the overall package deal, accessories have to fit the main product.
   uppestar (0%)
vero, l'imballo veramente notevole,l'aereo vola in modo meraviglioso, il motore esuberante e si vola in termica molto facilmente.
Fantastco......
   BCBasher (85%)
Deans are copyrighted and the conectors that used to come on their bateries were clones. I think they got in trouble I'm thinking about switching to xt60s anyway they look easier to solder and plug/unplug.
   JackChen (62%)
Is not about Deans or XT60's, the main thing is, I bought planes, chargers and batteries off Hobbyking over 2 consecutive orders to help some guys start the hobby. They don't fit each other and there is rework to be done.

If Hobbyking wants to standardize to XT60's, please also inspect your chargers, your planes to make sure they fit your batteries. It's not funny to invest more time and money to correct this.
   BCBasher (85%)
Getting difernt supliers to standardiz would take time. This is electric rc after all, if you don't like soldering maybe try nitro *)
