1/6/2010 Faulty bearings Just recieved the AerodriveXp SK series 35-42 last week and fitted in a 15size balsa Katana, running 11x4.7 334watts 33.04amps static, the bearings lasted about 3 flights before they started making noise, On the 15th flight the bearings locked up luckily i had enough height so thought id tried a snap roll and this got me spinning again, then on final approach it locked again, Got it down safely no thanks to this motor, The bearings are NSK so dont know why so many people have the same issue, this motor was only ordered 2 weeks ago on the 20/5/2010 so dont think this bearing problem is an old issue that has been fixed, It hasn't been, Not worth risking you plane with these SK motors with japanese NSK bearings, The assembly process probably damages them so whats the point of good bearings if their stuffed when you get the motor, Some people have been luck going by the reviews but i know i won't risk another one of my plane's,

It will do 600watts but for long. Its a good motor but 450 watts is a more realistic limit. For these mootors the 3 watts per gram rule is a good idea. I ran it on 5 x A123 cells, 10 x 5 prop was putting out 615 watts. Magnets came loose after 3 flights. Glued then in again and now use 4 x A123 with a 400watt limit,

Well, according to the specs, c would be best (10-14 pole outrunner), but mine seems to run good on 7 degrees.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any props between the 14x12 and 12x6 to test it with, but i'm planning on running it at 14.8 volts, not 11.1. I tried an 11x5.5 last night, about 44 amps, 640 watts static, so i'll probably run this prop. I won't be going full throttle too much, it will be on a 3D plane, so it should be ok with the 11x5.5. I could run the 12x6 if I stayed with 3S, but it really screams with 14.8 volts, a whole different motor. By the way, if anyone was wondering, I used an E-flite watt meter for testing.

I just got mine today. 1st test was on 3s 2650ma 20C, 12x6 prop. 35 amps, 385 watts. 2nd test with same 3S battery, 14x12E prop 45 amps, 602 watts at 3/4 throttle, WAY too much prop. Back down to the 12x6 prop, 2S 2200ma 20C x2 in series batteries, 51 amps, 654 watts at just over half throttle. This motor can't handle bigger props at 14.8 volts, I am going to try a 10x7 next. It really spins up on 14.8 volts!!!

I have the 40A Turnigy BESC on this motor with a 12x7E Xoar prop and 4S battery. What should the timing mode be set to? And the motor gets quite hot, after a minute full throttle I guess it's about 60-70 degrees Celsius (140 F). Is this OK? The BESC is just hot, I guess 45 degrees after the minute run.

***h... 12x7 seems a bit too large for 4s. 4s operation needs always smaller props than suggested for 3s. You should look for an amperemeter to check your current. I guess it's much more than 40A. Reduce the prop size, if you want to be safe.

Austen you will be in the safe range with that set up. You will get more out of your motor with an 11x7 prop though and still come in around 41Amps. I have tested this with a WattsUP and here is the vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcNpQr-CD9k

Depends on prop size and resulting current. Turnigy Plush/Sentry 40A will do, (e.g. 13x7 prop at 3s = 42A), if you don't fly full throttle for longer periods. If you are a "burner", the 60A ESC is the safe recommendation.

I use the 60A ESC, with a 11x7 prop on my T-28 I get 491W * 41 Amps tested with a Watts UP. Probably a bit overkill with the 60A ESC but better safe than sorry.

LOL i wish i read this before i burned.. I was running this motor with a 10x6 prop and the 30A ESC, nothing left of the ESC but motor survived

Adam I run the 9x6 prop with this motor too on my Depron Foamy and get 330W * around 28Amps. I use a 40A ESC for that setup.

Magnus, you're right it was the 2826/10 920 Kv. Yes the AXI has a higher wattage rating. But I tested this motor with the suggested prop on 3S lipo. My logger reported wattage below 600 except for the first 10 seconds or so when it peaked at 620. The 605W rating on the motor would lead one to believe that its capable of a maximum amp draw of (605W/11.1V = 54A)on 3S. I never had the chance to test a different prop, it just burned up. I think it could have just been defective because I have other SK's that perform flawlessly. I'm not sure I'm willing to roll the dice on another one though.

The Qkontroll is not good from the factory. I allways take a new motor appart and inspekt the windings. So far only 1 motor of 3 has been good, the bad motors had one or two wires sticking out from the toothe and would probably brake off if i had run the motor. Maybe that is what happend to your motor.

You will reach the full wattage only with 4s. With full packs = 16V at around 38A this gives you 608 Watt. Don't try to get this with current instead of voltage. The motor is really overloaded with >40A. Anyway mine is running great at 3s with 13x7 prop at 42A. (E-glider, max 30 seconds) That's around 480..500 Watt. Should be the limit for 3s.

I run two motors this size on a 3S LiPo and a 60A ESC. 44A,540W static as measured using a 11X8.5E prop at full throttle. The motor is infrequently run at max throttle except on take off and climbs for tailspins. Each motor has well over 30 flights on them and have performed well. I suspect about 40-41A is max continuous current with about 45A for short durations, but really do not know other than using a 4S LiPo voltage into the wattage.

Witch AXI did it replace? The 12 turn has a Kv of 730 It`s the 10 turn that has Kv920, and bothe are rated 800W. I dont think it`s fair to compare a 140 grams 600W motor with a 180 grams 800W one. I would say 13x8 prop is too big.

yes, as soon as a person starts getting into electrics They should get a wattmeter like the Wattsup or other brands. It will pay for itself in avoiding burned motors and underperforming motor/battery/prop combinations that are actually just mismatched. It has made all My planes fly better and cooler. I have never burned a motor, lipo, or ESC.
