If you like our giant L-4 but don't have the car space or flying space to own one, this tough EPO Plug N Fly model is ideal for you. This model is a nice but managable size and is packed with amazing scale detail, it is even pre-weathered!
Plug N Fly of course means quick assembly and almost every component is attached by screws, including the 2 wing halves, even the tailplane can be removed for transportation if desired. All servo's are pre-installed as is the ESC & powerful Brushless Motor. This model is ideal for RC pilots of all ability and it is not often that a geniuine scale model can be flown by relative beginners. The scale detail is quite amazing, plastic injection moulded parts are used extensively and include the dummy engine, wing struts and and the dummy bungee under-carriage.
Practical features include the linked steerable tailwheel, large magnetic battery hatch, construction of course from tough & easy to repair EPO foam, large "Cub" wheels with rubber tyres and 4s power for guaranteed performance.....a fantastic looking model on the ground and in the air.
Hi, I have just ordered the l4grasshopper & noticed that it requires a 2200mAh 4s Lipoly Battery. Can anybody tell me if I can use a 2200mAh 3s 25C Lipoly Battery instead?
Thank you.
Aircraft is cheaper than uk for sure, but when you add on postage from HK and import duty (VAT 20%) when gets to Europe it can be cheaper just buying over here.
After puttingh the L4 grasshopper together i tryed to bind it to my tx. Without the wing servoes it would bind, but with them connected it woulh not bind. Has anyone else had this problem?
Mine bound ok with all the servos connected (Spektrum), but the ailerons started behaving erratically, and the receiver light started flashing afterwards. After trying a lot of options I worked out that I needed to either replace the esc or fit an additional ubec. I went for the latter and all seems to be working ok for now. I'm hoping to maiden her this weekend, and I'll post my results.
The grasshopper/j3 Cub from hobbyking has anyone had problems with the wing nuts dropping in the cockpit when trying to screw wing screws in and how did they overcome the problem
Yes mate I did. I think mine is either a Friday afternoon / Monday morning job, judging by the various niggles I've had with her. Both wing bolts were glued in at a slight angle, and glue had seeped into the nut threads. Gentle coaxing didn't work, and one nut fell out, but by then the bolt threads had started St ripping. Solution: new nuts and bolts, copious amounts of vaseline carefully added to the threads, mpx zacky in the nut recesses, add nut, insert bolt (without wing in place), pull on bolt, making sure that the nut and bolt are seated correctly, allow to dry. Works a treat. She's built now, but one aileron servo has gone haywire, so I need to replace both today before her maiden this afternoon. Still good value, if she flies, more later.
Well my nut retaining job only worked with one of the nuts. One of the holes seems to be full of old glue, so it isn't a snug fit, and very difficult to retain, so I'll carry a spare set just in case. She's built now, just a bit of tweaking, and good weather and she'll be good to go (I hope). It wasn't the wing servo that had gone haywire, it was the bec not handling the load, so I've added a separate one and disabled the stock one. I just hope the esc is capable of looking after the motor now.
Hi mate how do you disable stock bec when replacing and what bec did you use as I am having same issue with my hobbyking L4 Grasshopper any help would be appreciated
Regards
Shaun
You only need to remove the red wire from the throttle plug. I prefer to use a pin to remove the wire and connector from the plug, then fold and tape it back (just in case you need to re-connect it), some simply cut it. I use the Turnigy 3-5amp ubec from HK.
Just about the only model in the UK warehouse im considering to buy as it's never in stock in Germany and only sometimes in hong kong in small numbers.I think i have seen this from a uk retailer for £*100 so not much of a saving.
Im afraid your prices are are a bit off old chap,5 min search and i found it on NITROTEK for £*120 also the Max Thrust version for £*130 so i bested your prices in a flash and i definitely saw 1 for below £*109 as they also had a RTF version for £*150.It was on a RC car website bust i lost it as i had to reformat my HD so lost all my web pages on FIREFOX :(
So apart from the "I once saw but can't remember 109. the cheapest available is 120. Well my limited maths puts that 50% dearer than HKUK which to you might be not much of a saving but to the rest of us is a considerable one.
Well i have already been right about those other website and also the fact when you deal with them you get customer support and i have also have free spare parts NITROTEK -I cant evan get parts from HK evan when they send P&P models that are missing parts and you see that a lot on the forums. You are getting your panties in a twist about this old bean and i wonder why you got credit for posting high ball prices of other retailers.
UK spare parts retailers for this bird - donny hobbies , century UK ,NITROTEK,provide good service.I will update with some overseas one's if i find them.
Sounds like the perfect solution, buy the plane from HKUK and the spares from your shops listed above. Or buy two from HKUK and use the second for spares.
What a bizarre conversation???? I wonder if darksaber forgot to change the default $ to £*? Just under £*80 seems reasonable to me, question is, can I get it without my Mrs finding out
That's funny buy two- maybe you should tell that to the poor suckers who bought the Lancaster LEMON £*150-200 as a lot where hit with (£*50 import taxes) washed down the toilet because hobby king shipped it with trashy ESC ,servos and numerous other electric faults pathetic packing .Plenty of these planes crashed dew to ESC caused the motors to SURGE. TRY Googling - HOBBYKING LANCASTER LEMON :(

If you copy the name of the plane in the search box you will see the listings from other warehouses. checkout the discussion and review tabs where you get info from guys who have built it
hey Marty if you do get one, just remember what happened to mine on its 3rd flight.the esc has no separate ubec and did not like 4s.the plane its self flys very well and given its little wheels im amazed just how much long grass it can handle with out nose over. i got mine from nitrotec. wood i buy it again.....yes i would, just fit a bec.
I have one of these, although it is the RTF version from starmax by another supplier. So essentially exactly the same but with its own transmitter and battery included. This was my first rc aircraft and a friend and myself flew this without an experienced person helping. Wow, this thing is amazing. When you go full pelt it is definitely aerobatic capable, it climbs very well, has no problems with loops and rolls, hammerheads and stall turns.
Would I recommend it for a beginner? Hmmm... I managed fine, but if I knew then what I know now I would probably go for something lighter and smaller, probably learn on a tek sumo or something (which I have as well, it's brilliant). But it you like scale looks and a model that will be enormous fun after you learnt the basics, this one is definitely great. I might get another one, just so we can modify the first one in to a bush fly version. In other words, add flaps, big wheels etc.
I have put this model together bought from UK warehouse and it is great, for a comparison just finished a Ben Buckle kit which took me 18 months to build and cover and this plane is far superior, I am giving up building as you cannot compete, buy one you won't be sorry.

What a great Plane! Fantastic detail easy to put together cannot believe what value you can get these days. Does not even look like foam. This is the Starmax model distributed by CML distribution normally at rip off price, but what a bargain from Hobby King. Went together easy and undercarriage now has proper suspension unlike early models which people on the net were saying was weak. Please hobby king now in Uk. Just waiting for Sea Vixen to be in stock, will post flight review soon.

This is my first large plane purchase from Hobbyking.
You cannot beat the price @£82.00 for this size and quality of RC plane!
I live in Northern Ireland postage was @£7.00 what a bargain! - other RC mainland dealers take note - no additional postage rip offs here for N.I. customers!
I know some people say @£7 is the standard minimum delivery charge, quite high if you are ordering just a few small items - I would say wait and order as much as you can and get the benefit of the postage rate.
The plane came within 2 days of ordering by 48 hours Royal mail tracked post as stipulated.
The plane was well packed - all parts/fuselage/wings in plastic bags housed within a polysterene moulding which itself was within a cardboard box. This cardboard box was packed inside another cardboard box for shipping, you can't say they skimped on packing -very well packed!
No damage whatsoever or missing parts was found with any part/parts of the plane!
The plane itself is manufactured from a very good quality dense EPO foam. It does weigh somewhat heavier than you might think, but all parts are off a "quality construction"
I think as some other reviewer commented its an exact copy of the Starmax version but @£50 less than other RC Dealers, that includes Ebay.
I can only comment on my personal experience from this purchase, some others seem to diffe

Well model was a reasonable build if you have done foamies like this before. Wing bolts would not fit but nut fell out and I found that bolts and nuts were different threads!! Bought some M4 nuts and bolts and they worked ok, nuts are a neat fit in their socket. Undercarriage looks a bit iffy so have put some cyano in the main slot to hold the wire in. Left off wires and springs for tail rigging, will use fishing line and crimps which makes a neat job. Went to fly on a nice calm day and argh! could not get radio to bind. Had tried it at home with only one aileron connected and worked ok, connect all servos and nothing works. Club members suggested that the ESC/Bec was not up to the job of handling 4 cell 2200. Cut the power lead and used a 4.8 battery for the receiver, all worked ok. Have not got a rx battery that fits yet, so flight tests delayed. In the instructions it mentions 3 cell and 4 cell versions, info on model here says 4 cell :(
