The CL-415 is the only aircraft in the world purpose built as a firefighter, it is literally, a waterbomber. This big model Seaplane can be flown either off water or at your favourite grass flying feild, yet despite it's size, this kit can be completed for very little cost.
The model is very light, meaning little power is needed to get it "unstuck" and into the air, it also features a water steering paddle, connected to the rudder, for steering the model back to shore. If you are not flying from water, simply un-screw the water steering rudder and hand-launch, the Canadair's excellent manners mean a grass landing is a breeze. The kit features a very comprehensive hardware kit, including servo extension leads, 8x3.8SF props, spinners, glue and tools!
just built one of these - there should be a dehavilland mosquito along these lines, a foam fun model - instead of the scale attempt hk did out of foam. If we wanted a scale mosquito, it wouldn't be a foamie, and would probably be a lot larger. In this size, as a fun flyer, a mosquito would be a great hit. I scratch built one from foam sheet and it's a riot.
replace your clevis on the struts immediately.
I had one let go on the second flight - left turn that couldn't be countered, tree strike. for 2.80 you can replace them all with metal solder clevis.
HK should do this as the ones in the kit are very poor.
Paint... Has anyone found a paint which lends some extra durability to the foam skin on this plane? I have read some about acrylic sealers followed by spray paint but am hesitant to try as it took 25 days to get my hands on this plane. Also, two blade stock props seem kinda flimsy... can someone point me toward a model number for a good quality three blade unit?
We used a similar bell style motor. we cut circular firewalls from light ply. screwed the motors to these and glued the firewalls into the nacelles. we cut off about 1/4" from the top of the circular firewalls to allow cooling air to go out the back of the nacelles. Also, we used white packing tape to cover over the servo and motor wiring on the lower wing surface, then notched the wing cradle for the wires to pass into the fuselage.
Our ESC's are mounted to the underside of the wing, right at the wing root line between the spars.
* HK:
PLEASE RE-STOCK THE YELLOW !!! THE WHITE IS REALY CHEAP CHEAPED DOWN (**** - FROM P.O.V.).
- DUE WHERE WHITE "COLORED" NO SURFACE FINISH IS APPLIED -> PURE FOAM -> FAST CRACKING, SURFACE VERY VERY SENSITIVE TO SCRATCHING, ONCE DIRTY IT IS NOT CLEANABLE ANY MORE.
I'm currently in the process of converting the model over to a yellow paint scheme. And it's actually painting up really well, just make sure to put the first two coats of primer on nice and light. It uses about 200-300g of spray paint to cover the entire model (with multiple coats).
you can try 3 blade prop. like this one ID: MA0740TP or this one ID: MA0740T. 3 blades gives you opportunity to decrease lenght of the blades since additional blade aims to keep thrust surface and keep efficiency, so if you are recommended with 8x4 normal prop, you can take 7x4 3blade one. I hope it will not tuch watar thta much) I allso want to order these props for my Canadair). But frome my friend's feedback mentioned props are very good but very fragile so it's better to take more at once.
You have to use a cable 'Y' and in removing one of two ESC the red cable (that of the center) of the conector in that you plug in the cable 'Y' this way you use the bec of another ESC and have to use not even ESC I choose not even another auxiliary battery
TO THE SPECIALISTS:
WHAT MOTORS TO USE WITH GWS HD 9050 3-Blades PROPS?
My now 2nd CL-415 will have water drop system, take-off weight with full 500ml tank = approx. 1700-1800g.
In my 1st CL-415 I had GF2215 1200KV, max. 24.5Amps, 60gram, in combination with GWS HD 8040 3-blades props. - NEED MORE THRUST NOW.
By the way - I know own the white colored - pure CHEAP CHEAP foam - very bad, zero-scratch and dirt resistant! This is a badly cheaped down version of the yellow!!! The yellow was "film"-covered all over - MUCH BETTER!
Hi chris, I have all 3 of my canadairs with a bell motor of 1100 kv that sells for 6.59 here at king and they are perfect fit for stick mount provided with kit{ i live here in maine and on a lake and fly year round winter too... fantastic plane ...and I think they stopped selling the yellow and red kit...at least here in the usa.
The motors are AX2308n 1100kv. and ax2306n 1300 kv, The only diff between the two is power consumtion...12 mins versus 14 mins. using the provided props with kit. I fly with both set-ups and no problems (3 years both color planes) (1100 kv. more efficient longer flight times)
Help, what motor mounts work for this plane? I purchased GWS 28mm motor mounts, and they do not fit in the cowling of the plane.....I see a lot of videos of the plane, but nobody says what motor mounts they are using. The motors are offset from the center of the motor mount (using the GWS mounts), and they wont fit into the cowling....it looks as though the motors should be centered with the stick mount, that way the motor fits into the plane.....
Chris, I made the mounts by cutting a circular piece of plywood and attaching it to the square stick that comes with the kit. The stick fits into the square hole inside the cowling and you adjust the round plywood piece slightly offcenter so that the engine is cented in the cowling.
I was just being lazy, and hoping there was an easy fix. Was there any cooling issues with the use of the ply? And thank you for the answer, i still have a few months before summer arrives (I live in the NWT, Canada!!)
This one is definitely EPS, must use a foam safe CA or tube glue for this one. 'Guan-Li'(model mfg) materials are very unique. Utmost care is required when working with them. For Katalinas....don't loop it even if you have a full length of the wing carbon fiber rod imbedded. It's not really aerobatic, but great on water operations..
Have bought this plane as my first twin engine plane I have a dream of using a 4s on it and have two different pairs of engines that I think that I may use on it. Turnigy L3010C-1300kv (420w) and NTM Prop Drive Series 35-30 1100kv / 380w. I suspect that the NMT has to low kv since the prop size is low. Hope for some assist from my fellow el flyers
hi gakke..!
as im recommended,it'll be better to use 22mm~28mm motors instead. ur plan to use tht 35 series motor is somehow oversized, means way too heavy-will resulted to require bigger lipo's,need bigger Amp's esc..
Turnigy D2822/14 Brushless Outrunner 1450kv motor is best suited for this plane. mated with Hobby King 30A ESC 3A UBEC,power-to-weight ratio & performance is superb for this wonderful twin amphibian plane(thus will only needs 3s lipo of 1800~2200~2450mah)to achieve good flight duration.
& pls award me somemore credits for my responded..
tqvm..!
Another TIP - It is almost impossible to line up the 4 screws securing the wing but add a small plywood shim with a hole the size od of the blind nut you can then attach a 3mm nut which will protrude above the entrance to the blind nut so when you go to insert you long wing screws they are guided to the holes by the oversized nut and catch right away. Be sure to start all 4 and tighten them a bit at a time so the wing goes on square and flush.
boim77 - make sure the aileron servos are mounted opposite to each other - look at the wires - one comes out the top and one the bottom. you will hook up the Y harness later and they are both powered at the same time but because they are opposite the work as ailerons - not flaps.
I made a round motor mount and attached it to the square stick with a single screw and some epoxy. Then when I slid in the wires and the stick I used epoxy on the stick and some on each side where the round motor mount touches the side. Be sure to notch the top on the round motor mount you make so air can flow through and cool the engine.
I hope this helps
Hi, i am newbie. can you help me, please?. this is to be the first my rc seaplane if i get it. i am confused about two servo aileron, does it need the Y servo for two servo aileron and how about the motor mount, is this match for the motor mount? is there anybody use this motor mount for the canadair rc seaplane. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__6332__Woo d_Stick_mount_for_foamies_10mm_.html

Just test flown mine today. Wow I love this model. Its overpowered a bit but nice to have in reserve. Have made hinged access hatches in the nacelles for betteraccess to the ESC's and slotted the wing for the wiring, much nicer now. Takesoff from grass in under 10 mtrs flies on less than half throttle, it does have a nosedown flying angle which looks great, touch and goes are so easy. Yet to try water but can't see any problems. Great value for money.
Moteur 22/10 1200kv hélice master airscrew 8x6 vole super bien. Attention au flotteurs un peu fragiles

Absolutely brilliant model, for the price. The foam is delicate, and very light weight. I laminated the entire model. An additional spar is recommended of the wing. Some fiberglass covering was applied to the belly, for additional protection. Set up with 22/14 1450Kv and 25A ESC's, HK 9g sevos. Flies slow and stable. Perfect for a beginner / trainer. Easily hand launched and belly landed. Build was straight forward, manual and most accessories were included. The model is surprisingly quiet, very easy to fly, cruises easily at 1/4 throttle. Highly recommended for relaxed smooth and stable flying, on the water!
