FrSky FAS-100 Telemetry Amperage Sensor
FrSky FAS-100 Telemetry Amperage Sensor

The FrSky Amperage Sensor (FAS-100) can measure Current (A), Power Consumption (mAH) and Power (W) when connected between a battery and ESC. Current (A) and Power (W) will be displayed on the FLD-02, while Current (A) and Power Consumption (mAH) will be displayed on the DHT-U. The FAS-100 reports Power and Power Consumption without an external voltage sensor and, in addition, can be linked together to report individual cell voltages by using the FLVS-01.

I bought one from the old batch and it was a 40A in disguise. Just received one from the new batch and it was the 100A sensor. Hope that answers your queries.
 nabla 1 points
Just received one and it's a real 100A sensor. Very solid construction and PCB traces correctly designed to handle this power. I think it's heavier than 24g declared but I don't have measured it.

I have connected up my FAS-100 and run the motor however the current does not display on the FLD-02. I also have the FrSky LiPo voltage sensor connected to the FAS-100 and it displays perfectly on the display. I get all three voltages and the total voltage. I have checked my FLD-02 and it is running 2.1 software. Anything that I am not doing right?

PROBLEM WITH THAT WRONG CONFIGURED FAS ?? (SEE PICTURE "DEFECT FAS 100" IN THE FILES ! I have 2 Versions of these. The old one is working perfectly a FAS100. But the new one FAS 100 much smaller than the old one is not working from beginning. I opened a Request and make Videos for HK. They give the money back after control. Than I opened the FAS100 and I was wondering, what I see. On the circuit board is written 40Ampere and not 100Ampere???? I bought a FAS100 !!! And a 40Amp FAS you cannot order/is not in the store from HK and not listed???? So from where is that product. Than I make recherches in Google and I find a FAS 40AMP in a specialised store for FR-SKY. What is going on here with HK??? Is there nobody controling what they buy?
 joe 12 points
I got the same thing. It is actually a FAS-40. The BATT and ESC positions are opposite between the FAS-100 and FAS-40. It took me a lot of time and frustrated effort checking with a scope and terminal program before I realized it is just an FAS-40 with a FAS-100 label! This could lead to fires if you put 100 amps through. WATCH OUT! I figured this all out and opened a support ticket with Hobbyking. They said thanks and closed the ticket! Unreal! They didn't even offer to send me the proper sensors. I have also informed Frsky.

Yes I found out that Mistake and they also do not check!
 Michael2 158 points
THAT IS THE ANSWER FROM FRSKY: Dear Michael, Thanks for your e-mail and support. There is one batch of 120pcs FAS-100 provided to HobbyKing that with the same PCB size as FAS-40 but they are true FAS-100 and could measure 100A without problem. They have been well tested, but were put on the wrong label - the BAT and ESC positions should be opposite. Sorry for the trouble and thank you again for your report and support. Best regards! FrSky Team
 joe 12 points
I got the same response. However there is a current shunt on this device and an FAS-100 has a hall effect sensor instead of shunt. There is no voltage loss on a true FAS-100 but I get a significant voltage loss on this device when I run high current. At least we know it won't catch fire but it sucks that we didn't get what we paid for.
 Rainer 1 points
Hi, this means mine will work when I change the connectors motor/batterie? So easy? Because I am very anoid about this none working sh.t I did not even open yet a ticket with them.

Hello, I'm fairly new to rc. I have a HITEC Optic 6 transmitter with Spectra 2.4Ghz plugged in the back. I am interested in monitoring motor temp and current on a car. What are my telemetry options? Also when deciding what motor/esc to buy I see allot of peopele say to "keep an eye on the current". I assume the only way to do this is with telemetary? Thanks.
 alex.khoroshko 385 points
No, not the only. Lots of people don't have a telemetry - they use wattmeter for ground tests of motor power (to make sure the power/current is right), and then they fly without any current monitoring. To use telemetry, you'll need telemetry receiver and transmitter, also the screen to view it. The only option for you is to find the PPM signal in your module tray and connect the transmitter with the screen (ID DHT-U) to it and buy separate receiver ID: D8R-II. then you'll be able to connect surrent sensor or voltage sensor directly to a receiver, or you can buy the telemetry hub and connect a lot more other sensors - look for frsky telemetry listing.
 Gavin 1 points
Ok, I'm still a bit confused. Short of running beside my rc car with a clamp meter, I don't see how I can simulate my gear train/weight to get an idea of the current I would be pulling. Is there such thing as an rc dyno? Also I don't understand anything after ppm. Please explain? Thanks.
 alex.khoroshko 385 points
Sorry, missed your post, hope it's not too late. For a car, it seems that it's hard to estimate the current - you should google for similar configurations like yours to find out the motor current before you buy it. If you already have a motor, you can use the power meter - most of them can register the peak values - that's what you need. As for telemetry. I personally love the frsky for its price and functions. You can connect DHT-U (enter this ID into your HK search field) to the pins in tray of your transmitter. Google for "DHT-U V2.0 USER GUIDE pdf", open page 7 and you'll see how to connect the wires. DHT-U goes without receiver, so you need to buy it separately ID: D8R-II. Second option is to use DFT module (ID: DFT). Google for youtube video "HobbyKing FrSky 2.4 GHz Futaba Module mod for Hitec Optic6" to see, if this option good for you. This combo has a receiver, but has no screen, so you need to buy it, ID: FLD-02. The receiver itself doesn't measure the current. So you'll need the current sensor in any case, ID: 236000007 . It was in backorder for 2 months and now it is in stock, so if you're going to buy it - hurry.

CAN I USE 2 FAS-100 IN PARALLEL WITH 2 LIPOS ?
 alex.khoroshko 385 points
Do you want to achieve 200A maximum measurable current? The most simple way is to connect one battery through current sensor and the second one directly to ESC. You will get approximately half the current through your FAS-100. mAh estimation would be correct (half of the total consumpted power).

Good morning* I have coneccted the FAS-100 across the sensor hub. The initial reading is 5A (many amperes) .If I use my intensity meter(tester)gives me a reading of less than one ampere. The same thing happens if I connect the FAS-100 without the sensor hub. It does not seem that it is very accurate!
I´*m sure the cables are well coneccted.
 Theunsie 149 points
I had the same problem when I just went and connected it the day I bought it. You must update the software in your display unit so that calculate the correct ratio and display the correct reading. I love this device so much, I removed the telemetry hub and now run the sentry unit and amp unit directly to my receiver. It displays the amps battery voltage and mah capacity used

Can the FAS-100 to connect to FrSky Sensor Hub (FSH-01) and FLD-02 to get all telemetry
 Captain P2A 35 points
Hi thiomir,
Yes you can daisy-chain it with other devices like voltmeter (FLVS-01). the answer to your question is on frsky website : (add www before) frsky-rc****/ShowProducts.asp?id=127.
Hope it helps!!
spitfire2010  645 points - 7/12/2012

Can this be connected directly to the FrSky receiver without a sensor hub?
 lofty 20 points
Yes it can it connects in the same place as the sensor hub on the D8R-II Plus. The digital stream RX port instead of the hub.
 MJBENNETT9 86 points
I don't have my setup yet, but i see lots of posts on skipping the use of the telemetry hub. But it is needed if you have several devices, right? or you daisy chain devices and skip the hub? I'll be getting GPS, voltage, altitude, amp100, etc. sensors.

Can this be used inflight? I mena, does this have memory?
 Luffy 57 points
no it can not be used in stand alone mode
it must be connected to rx back to tx.
 Blue Angel 1464 points
This sensor is for inflight or ground use, but every time in combination with telemetry receiver. On the display of the FrSky transmitter module or the FLD-02 LCD display you can see live the current or mAh consumption. The DHT-U transmitter module does have logging onto sd-card too. So you can download the data to the computer.

whats happening if >100A is pulled? smoking sensor or just measuring faults?
 Arman 375 points
I think smoking sensor because 100A is allot of power
 Blue Angel 1464 points
the deans will melt. *-)
 Michael2 158 points
INFORMATION: It does not melting away! You must take other connectors and it will work with 100A short time about 2 minutes. But if you drive with more than 100A you will need "2" LIPOS parallel used. If you want to measure you can put the SENSOR into the way of only one of from the lipos and you measure only the HALF AMPERE and so you can use that one to measure up to 200A. You understand?

Anyway to get this FrSky telemetry data to appear on Fatshark goggles? This would need to be superimposed on the tranmitted video signal. There is a Hungarian chap on **** who has a PIC based device to feed the RSSI signal to an OSD.
 Elmardus 12 points
No, this is not for display on video goggles. It would be much simpler to get an OSD with current sensor. Why would you want to if an OSD is much easier?
DriesRC  285 points - 6/25/2012

Why the hell the power consumption cannot be diplayed on the FLD-02 when it's possible on the DHT-U ??? Why can't they make both screens to do the same ? Is it not simplier to create only one software for both screens ? I don't understand this way of working !

 stewjw 232 points
To upgrade the FLD-02 you also need to buy the FrUSB-3. I've lost my patience with this device. I already have a voltage sensor connected to my OSD so this is superfluous. For the moment I'm still using the FLVS-01 connected to the data hub to display the cell voltages on my FLD-02 but I can't set alarms using this method. I mainly use FLD-02 for the RSSI alarms. I like the FrSky products but this one is a bit screwed up.
 stewjw 232 points
On reflection my criticism above is unfair it does what it says. Although for flying amps are not as important as volts to show battery drainage, and there are cheap battery voltage sensors available where you can set alarms.

2 reasons: 1) There exist no TX60 connectors 2) XT60 connector at const. 90-100A without 10awg wire as a heat sink will melt and burn this device.

Hy, i have received today this sensor and it look fine. The sensor comes without connector, you can install your normal battery / ESC conector directly by the cables. It is possible, that you can connect the sensor by the sensorhub and by the receiver directly. You can also connect the LIPO sensor to this sensor and then to the receiver. A good tool for optimising your e-motor.

Thanks FRSKY and HK.

If I knew that this product connected directly to the receiver and the sentry voltage display unit could send data through this unit to the receiver, I would not have bought the sensor hub. Good product and good addition to electric power model. It displays mah used, amps drawn and up to 12s individual cell voltage when the FLD 02 unit is updated and two voltage centry units connected in line.
