SPAD XIII 700mm (PNF) (AUS Warehouse)

SPAD XIII 700mm (PNF) (AUS Warehouse)
SPAD XIII 700mm (PNF) (AUS Warehouse)

The Spad XIII was the final and ultimate version of the pretty French Fighter and featured a host of much needed aerodynamic and armament improvements over earlier versions which were outclassed by German fighters within 12 months of being supplied to French squadrons, the improvements were reccomended and pushed forward by the leading French Ace Georges Guynemer, the result being one of the classic fighters of WW1.

This EPO Spad is simply stunning both in terms of looks and scale detail, radiators, exhaust pipes, machine guns and so on are all faithfully reproduced and all the struts & cabanes feature loops for those wanting to add authentic rigging wire. Being Plug and fly, there is little to do in terms of building with the powerful motor, ESC & servo's pre-fitted and the high quality waterslide Decals have also been expertly pre-applied.

Flight performance from the superb bi-plane is 1st class, flight controls are responsive at all speeds and the model has a wide flight envelope, it is capable of realistic slow flight and scale aerobatics, it will also tolerate a little wind making it a very practical model to own. Through it's extensive flight testing, we also found the model to be very robust, when you put it all together, this superbly finished Spad has quality, looks, reliability & performance, it is a must for the collection of any scale or warbird enthusiast!

Hey Scott,

We desperately need parts for this great plane! I have tons of flights on this superb little model, however i have torn the wings off twice now and it's starting to look a little tired. If we could buy an airframe or even just a pair of new wings, struts and undercarrige that would be awesome. The fusalage is still in top nick and it would be a shame to bin the plane and get a new one just for the sake of the wings.

To anyone looking at buying this plane, 1000mAh 3S nano tech is the battery to buy, 8 min flights!

The wires on the 850mAh 3S nanotech are too small for max performance.

Does anyone know how to get some spring into the undercarriage, as it is really stiff?
 LUCKY87 3 points
You can try softening it up in some hot water, however on landings I've found they are pretty robust, never had an issue.
 d3c0y 3 points
I agree with LUCKY87 only time its broken is when i have crashed.
 XTRA 230 12 points
You Can always try to get a set of softer foam tyres Maybe I am going to do the same with my SE 5a

Thanks XTRA 230. I installed 50dia. x 17 wide soft wheels (ex P51) and they work great. They are a bit heavier but cushion the impact on landing. Much better than the original wheels.

Someone said there's a spec/instruction sheet available to download? Can I get some direction on where to find it please?
The ESC is HUGE. Won't fit in the compartment behind the engine. The engine cowl has been badly machined with an out-turned edge that cuts the black plastic cosmetic engine cover, one grub screw is in so tight it won't come out. Using a 1/16th Allen* no go. Any suggestions? Thx.
 d3c0y 3 points
Try a metric allen key or superglue the key into the screw.

Do you have the esc with blue shrink wrap? it fits sideways at the top of the fusalage for me. Then i use a 6ch receiver, tapped to teh back of the servo compartment at the back on the side. I've fitted a 30A red brick and had no space issues?

Help please!. Trying to bind my Hobby King 2.4Ghz 6Ch Tx & Rx V2 (Mode 1) to my SPAD XIII. The throttle works but no response at all from any servos. They are connected up to the correct channels. Should there be some response straight out of the box or do I need the USB cable to program accordingly?
 d3c0y 3 points
You shouldn't need to use a USB especially if the throttle works. Have you tried plugging other servos to the receiver to see if that works. Also maybe try rebinding the receiver with a bond plug.

This is not it, maybe look at something in the indoor/parkfly section that is tough, slow and small.

just like to know what prop is the replacement as my one broke in a crash
 H-KING_SCOTT 5161 points
7x6 will do nicely.
 SigiK 195 points
I am using an 8x4 GWS, works really well.
 d3c0y 3 points
9x5 GWS will give really good vertical performance on 1000MaH 3S and around 200W. I had to replace my ESC with a 30A red brick as the stock ESC died. This setup gives me 8min of flying time.

Arrived double boxed in 3 days from the NSW warehouse in what looked like good condition but upon opening found a few problems. Vertical and horizontal tail feathers both badly warped, I have added a CF spar to the tailplane to strenghten and straighten. Clevis on the rudder control rod was unusable so replaced this too. Most annoyingly upon firing up the motor it became obvious something was amiss. Whole motor wobbled significantly and after major surgery on the once beautiful front end it was found the grub screw securing the motor to the mount was missing completely so this had to be replaced too. QC not good with mine, hopefully I just got unlucky. Having rectified these issues the build was relatively straight forward and everything fitted together better than I expected given the unpromising start. I look forward to a calm day for the hopefully uneventful maiden. Hopefully the thrill of a cheap price is not replaced by the bitterness of poor quality, it was only $80 - I guess you get what you pay for!!

Having had 10 flights now with this spritely little bird the disappointment I felt in my initial build review has been replaced with unadultarated joy. She flies great, is capable of non scale fast flight and scale slow flight, all biplane aerobatics and inverted flight with ease. I get 8mins out of the 800mAh 3 cell battery with conservative power management and scale flight. Undercarriage is very robust and landings easy on flat surfaces - love it!

2 day delivery...all good. Downloaded manual from info from this review section... no info with Spad tho.. Nice finish... I painted the spars brown to match real planes... Also weathered it a bit with a black and brown wash.. Undercarriage self tappers need to be a little bigger as holes were too big.. Had problems with motor... It didn't run despite checking program options. Removed motor and tested with other esc, still faulty.. Was about to replace but gave it one more test and it worked.. C of G is meant to be 30-38mm from leading edge... Had it at 38mm...Took off nicely but was a little twitchy even roll rates were low.. Maybe needs to be around 30mm. Had to cut away battery space to be able to push xt60 down beside battery... Maybe xt60 is overkill as esc is only 20A.. 800mah battery gives lots of power but beware of flight time.. Had two flights about 4min each and motor cut and had to dead stick downwind.. No probs tho.. Looks nice doing slow flypast... Am considering finishing off wing guy ropes to give more detail and maybe a pilot... Mitch

This is my initial review based on unboxing and inspecting all parts only, without flight review just yet (it is winter and the weather is rubbish).

I have just received my beautiful SPAD - it is incredible what they can build for such a low price now. This model is really great value.

It took just 4 days from order to arrive and everything was complete in the box and undamaged. The instruction manual is actually quite good in this case and I will be able to build it no problems. The foam is well moulded, feels strong and the scale details are all very nice.

I plugged in all the electronics including an orange rx I bought at the same time. Servos and Rx work great - unfortunately the motor was initially making a knocking sound, so I contacted the support team for some advice. I spoke with Cheryl in live chat, vin, ken and nickso in email and all have been incredibly helpful and accomodating. This is the first time I have had any problem with an HK product and I do not know why some people complain about these guys - they really are excellent.

Over the course of a week I was emailing info back and forth on a daily basis and the response times and information I received have been great! Now my DOA motor is being replaced and I can't wait to fly this little beauty. Thanks guys for the great support.

This is a sweety. After messing around with lead to get recommended C of G and having it fly like a brick i read a review that said fly it as is with the recommended battery.Totally new handling and now it's a dream to fly. ( 45 mm back ) Can safely say it's now my favorite model. Flys at a scale speed on one third throttle and when you open the tap it will be out of sight if you don't pay attention. Tail feathers a little warped but it doesn't seem to affect it. I needed 10 clicks ofn the right aileron to get level flight but i will change that mechanically.
