Discovery 500 RC Sailboat Ready to Run

Discovery 500 RC Sailboat
A beautifully crafted R/C sailboat, fully built and ready to run.
All required items are installed, including mainsail winch, steering servo and all rigging, sail and hardware. All you need to do is add your own receiver and battery!
Boat hull is based entirely on an ocean going racing yacht and moulded in fibreglass with a perfect gelcoat and enamel painted finish.
Dont be mistaken in thinking these boats are slow and boaring. In a stiff breeze they can be extremely quick and perform turns rapidly, proving to be very exciting.

This kit comes pre-fabricated and all you need to do is connect the sail and include your own receiver!
The large servo winch and steering are already set up and ready to go!

i wonder why this boat is heavier than the others smaller than it. i think that there is a misunderstanding somewhere
 viciouspanda 12 points
It could be because this boat includes an already-filled keel ballast, while many of the others are shipped with empty keels to reduce weight.

when you will have stock of this product?
 LEPISSIER 16 points

can i use a 6 channel turnigy 2.4GHz tx/rx for this which i use for my quadcopter ?
 AndruRC 8 points
Yes. On Discovery 500 2 channels are required. It is obligatory to protect the receiver and accumulators in a balloon from water.
Fleming  5 points - 7/29/2012

Would someone recommend Tx/Rx and battery for this (exact SKU's), please.
 cloclorcbelgium 8 points
for tx/rx : -sku: HK-T4A-M2
battery : -sku: 9169000006
I use this setup, and it's perfect for me. For a price very resonnable

In general, the TX is able to use any AA cell. BUT: There are some "small mistakes" by translating INCH to MM or back. For TX perhaps needs (dependant to the kind of cell) to "unform" the contacts a little bit, receiver should run with every thing, which has 4.8 to 6 Volt. But: Make shure, all contacts are good! When whinch is operating, id needs about 0.5 A. Bad contacts would lead to malfunction!
elchan  43 points - 4/3/2012

Says the servo wench is installed, but does it come with servos?
 Ther- 8 points
Yes, both servos are included.
Mason  21 points - 1/21/2012

does it mater what Receiver battery you get for this boat?
 Mason 21 points
Not realy, if you find a batery that is not to big and works on boats, then you will be set
 Stefan 1 points
When whinch is operating, it needs about 0.5 A. So each contact has to be good! And the cells must be o.k.. Otherwise the whole Remote control may collaps! So: Best is, to have soldered RX cells 4.8 to 6 Volts. All have to be charged well.

can the dicovery 500 sailbout use the GT-2 2.4Ghz 2Ch Tx & Rx radio system? plz write back
 Oleg 11 points
I think that will be inconvenient to operate. It is better to use the standard transmitter.

if you use a compatable reciever Ie change the RX to one that works with your TX you shouldn't have any problems at all.

is this a 2 meter type boat? Will it sink if it gets swamped?
 Mason 21 points
It could be possible, when i take mine out, i connect a string to it so if it does(witch hasent yet) i can pull it back in to me. hope this www.link
 Ricardo 10 points
No it's not a 2 meter boat. Yes it will sink, most any sailboat will if it fills with water. RCGroups website has great FREE advice on this boat. The biggest thing it so make sure the hatch is sealed. Other mods will make this boat even better.

Fill the front of it with styrofoam to create a positive boyancy in the event it does fill with water.

I sail in two model boat clubs with R/C model boats here in the UK as long as the boat is sealed properly it shouldnt sink you can substute a hatch with some sticky backed plastic if it will not seal properly. (fablon).

What kind of receiver batterie is best for the KH $pektrum receivers?
 Blade Boy 116 points
You can get a bec to cut the voltage of a lipo 7.4v to 5 or 6 volts, that is what I did for my little Cessna that I built. Or you can get a life battery they are about 6.6 volts and will work without being cut down. Good luck to you

Or use a penlite (AA) battery holder that you make waterproof using balloons. This combined with 4 rechargeable batteries is the cheapest solution.

Belo veleiro...vou comprar um para experimentar
 Hansc 373 points
Yes this is indeed a good beginners boat for users with no experience.
 Fredylg 55 points
do you think that I can take this sailboat to the ocean?
 GWatts1115 15 points
you could but you would want to be sure you clean it real good with fresh water when you get home, the salt could cause you problems.
 oojimmyflip 6 points
yes it would be more buyant in salt water than fresh water.
prosit  98 points - 9/24/2010

Please stock in Germany!
 Hansc 373 points
Yes that would be great! Currently European users are better off ordering a more expensive sailboat (like the legend and monsoon) from DE warehouse for the same money. Or dorp shipping costs.

4 thumbs up!
Not a bad little boat.. little being the operative word. It saisl just fine in light to moderate conditions but wont handle anything like the big boats. The rigging needs replacing with better line and you need to make sure the sails are connected by the sheets to get the best out of the limited throws. All in all good value for a beginner's boat. Some improvements seem possible, but sail it first and see what you can do to improve performance!

http://shipshape.bendigocommunity.com/ and www.link great links showing what can be done with these little RC Sailboats.. I found that it was such a great intro to RC Sailing I got a second one just to compete with friends.. Have made several Mods and more are coming. Sure, there are some issues but overall it's been a good experience and good value, So, i do recommend this boat to anyone new to RC sailing and that wants to have fun with it while finding out what the right BIGGER boat is next..

Any sort of wind will flatten it. I have wrapped 4 ozs of lead round the bulb and smoothed with filler. Now it is starting to sail. Unable to fit normal battery pack under the supplied rear deck so made another flat one from plastic ice cream container. Large auto body plug let in to allow access to switch and charging lead. Haven't yet re-rigged it but I think a smoother cord would be an improvement. Takes a bit of getting used to and requires a fairly gentle touch to get the best sailing from it. If it ain't making headway it will make a lot of leeway!
