This famous German glider designed in 1935 is almost a cult classic amongst old-school glider pilots and those looking for something a little different. Its distinctive nose, stubby tail and gull wings are both attractive and functional, helping the original version to reach an altitude record of 6,687m in 1938!
Our Minimoa is a large (2mtr) RTF glider made from super strong reinforced EPO foam. This model comes pre-built with motor, esc and servos already installed. All you need to do is include your own receiver & battery to be ready to fly in 10 minutes.
The HK Minimoa is well designed, with easy access to the battery compartment, and the wings being easily removed with 2 nylon screws and a wing support bracket, making this an easy glider to set up at the field and fit into the back of your car as it takes around 3 minutes to assemble the main wings. The gull wings are kept strong with 2 reinforcing rods, inserted at the time of moulding the EPO; theyre fixed in place and will never move, providing a strong and slop-free support to the wings.
Everything is included with this kit, all you need to provide is your own receiver and battery (around 2200mAh 2 or 3S, 20C).
The wings are in 2 pieces and can be removed. They have a wing joiner,so you slide the wings together onto the joiner, position the wings on the fuselage, they slide into a slot in the fuselage at the rear and then the front of the wing is held down with 2 wing bolts, there is also a red plastic moulding which helps distibute the load.
What is the best battery and charger combo for my minimoa to get the best flight times out of it...?
And also I need a reciever battery as well all help would be appreciated...?
Thanks
I have 2 of these planes, there is no need to change the battery configeration, the standard one works fine, but do put a smaller prop on it so the motor doesnt over heat, battery lasts longer 2, works a treat.
Has anyone used ailerons as spoilerons on their Minimoa? If so how much travel did you use & were they effective?
I read a lot of comments about how long the glide is so I thought spoilerons would help with shorter landings.
Thanks.
I used them on another foam glider, they work well, definitely needed for smaller landing sites. They may cause the plane to speed up unless you pitch up slightly. Around 25-40 degrees should be good
You can see the files tab (next to videos) were attached instructions. I advise to open holes cooling in the spinner and the plate income and exit holes in the fuselage.
Mine wont sustain vertical, it will climb very qickly at about 45 degrees though. Forget about adding lead in front it realy doesn't want it. Recomended cog is 54mm but it glides much better further back. It will pitch it's nose up under power so mix in some down elevator with throttle or be ready to give it some down when you give it power.
Hi Sawdust, Drilling holes in the spinner and in the firewall will help especially when running the motor WOT. It seems the motor is almost guaranteed to heat it's way out of it's mount. At 500 feet, not too healthy. Stu
Hi Stu. From what I've read you're absolutely right. I did that before I maidened mine so I've never had a problem myself. I wrote a review on mine a fair while back after I'd been flying it a while where I mention all the things I've done to mine. I'm glad you brought the cooling one up here since I neglected too and nobody else has and it's fairly important. BTW, mine is still going strong over a year later although not flown every time out now. I'll put a copy of my original review after this to save retyping and because I think there's some usefull info in it.
I was a bit worried when I kept seeing reviews with people saying they had to add up to 90g to the nose to get it right, maybe if your trying to ballance on the recomended 54mm but mine is balanced closer to 70 and it glides fantastic. I mixed some down elevator with throttle, rudder with aelerons and a fair bit of aeleron differential and it's awesome. Minor issues: I did make a hole in the spinner and backplate and a vent hole behind the wheel before I flew it to keep things cool. One aeleron servo was iffy so replace, elevator control rod comes out of fuse way too low so did some carving to at least make it a gentle bend. The rudder hinges are absolute rubish that I replaced with ca hinges. Pay attention to the few iffy things to start with and DON'T throw tons of lead in the nose and you'll have a great glider that even looks realy good in the air. Highly recomended.
I should have mentioned that the hole I made in the spinner is a little over three eights of an inch and I made two holes in the backplate, one on each side.
G'day Sawdust, A shame we have to talk via this but thanks for the extra info. I'm waiting for mine to arrive. It's been posted. Someone put the boot in and caused havoc with every order I made Write h el i pl anes at Y ah o o do t co m if you don't mind please. I'm itching to get the Minimoa it will make a mate for my Phoenix 2000. I had my big operation... GREAT. I wonder if the latest Moa has been updated? Stu
No PM mate, I'm sure you know why. Where was the hole dead centre? I saw one guy drill 4 holes in spinner but worried it could mess up the balance if not spot on. I've also seen holes in front of windscreen, on sides of fuse, all for cooling. The plane is supposed to be nimh powered hence the weight problem and overhearing on 3S. Email's the only way mate.
On mine I put the hole dead centre of the spinner. I'm not sure but I can't see any advantage in 4 smaller holes. I wouldn't even consider putting one in the windscreen, we're trying to get air in through the motor and out somewhere where there's lower pressure, air would be trying to come in through the windscreen and be fighting against the air we're trying to let through the motor. The sides of the fuse towards the back might be OK but would spoil its looks a bit. As I said I put my exit hole behind the belly wheel and that's been working fine and it still looks good flying past. As far as ballance goes I have no extra weight in mine but I do need to fly with the 2200mah battery. I tried with an 1800mah shoved right forward but it was distinctly tail heavy with it and I got it back down safely but it wasn't nice to fly like that. It definately doesn't need 2200mah for a good long flight if you're using it as a glider but it does need the weight of that battery for ballance. I hate adding unnecessary weight but in this case it is. If you got my PM it should have my personal email addy in it, feel free to use it Stu.
You don't understand mate, I can't use PM due to ban, Nuff said!!! I can explain if you write to the addy I gave. It just takes a bit of reading :-)I didn't have any intention of drilling holes in front of the windscreen but reading through RC Groups I saw pictures of what people had done to their Moas. I intended to do exactly the same as you but put the output vent further back so it cools the Quanum transmitter as well. Which will be lying horizontal along the fuse. Stu
I order mine 5 days ago* tracking number not valid and yet to recieve item. I have tried to ring but no answer and sent emails to support asking for correct tracking number - no answer. Not impressed at all with the Australian warehouse
I finally recieved mine. ordered monday and recieved following monday (i live in Cairns). Wing tips slightly bent. Did fly it* under powered & motor gets hot and also flew better with small 1300 3s, so CG is questionable. Will be making new firewall and fitting a turnigy outrunner 35-30B, same blades
So far there is only this and the A380 available here. Hopefully they will have quite a bit of stock available here in Oz. This is exciting news indeed. It will make for a great Christmas this year (and hopefully years to come).
FYI, search for "Aus Warehouse" to see what items are available here.
100's of items will be listed soon, we are now testing the system and dont want to overload the new staff. After a few days we will begin listing more products.
Thanks VTOL. .that search method will be VERY handy. We need to set the currency to AUD before doing any buying otherwise you may think it's cheaper than it really is. Interesting that we get 7000grms for about $A16 shipping (Aust Post). Just need a wide range of "fillers".. likely? Hmmm? I wonder, too, how often the Hking pricing mechanism actually takes in to allowance the current exchange rate (as per PayPal) ? Lots of qeustions, but a good start. A quick calc makes one only Minimoa about $A1.00 dearer ex-Sydney ( but quicker, and handled better.. hoping..) The saving will be in using that extra 4.5 KG or so.
Damn! I missed Jason's meaasge above.. 1000's? just the ticket.. Go for it, we'll all make it worth your while. Oh, and my math is flawed.. disregard that bit.. got carried away.. didn't allow for exchange rate on buying from Hong Kong.. It's kinda irrelevant, anyway.
Yes..please do that Mick..we'll all like to know how smooth it went.. You should get it Monday or Tues? I'm hesitating on the Mimmosa to see if some of these "1000's" appear sooner or later.. So far I think you are the only buyer.. maybe their FIRST Oz uyer (should give it to you!!) there were 9 last night..8 now.. That should encourage them to put in some long hours getting the data set up *-)
Just got mine from AUS warehouse Dint even know it was going great stuff Got mine in 3 days fantastic stuff Just unpacking it and so far it looks great Anybody know the Cof G
Hey Mikey.. Did you get a tax invoice with it.. Just interested to know if it showed GST ( expect so.) as this is not included in a Hong Kong shipment.. Looking at comparative pricing between the 2 warehouse, making allowance for surplus weight allowance and the current high Aussie dollar it seems like you need to look at both sources before ordering. I'm all for the aussie site.. just hope it is successful.
I just got mine too, weel boxed.. I will add some pics soon. No instructions might make it hard for a new flier, but experienced builder / ARFer will have it together very quick. In my pack I got only 1 metal spare but the wing has 2 spar locations... I will lookin to this more before flying. Looks great bench flying :) No invoice. Mick
I bought 2 of these Minimoa before the Aus Warehouse opened. It is a thing of beauty in the air and goes together really easy. Two pints to be aware of: 1: The engine heats up a lot and will melt the mounting frame - so be careful and vent the nose section for better airflow. 2: Throw away or replace the Y servo connection in the kit and connect direct to your receiver if you can. Point 2 is why I needed to order a second one - aileron failure during a slow turn causued by this connection, caused the Minimoa to death spiral into the ground :(
Gorgeous in the air - and really easy to fly - 60% throttle on launch then sit back and enjoy the flight!
how strong is that spar in the wing. The piece of plastic that goes over the two wing halves does not look sufficient to me to support that much wing in a small dive loop. Anyone know
Hi Magnum, Yes - the spar will support dive loops fine, you can actually bend the spar by hand if you wanted to - but it does take quite some effort. I had a minimoa go vertical into the deck after a wiring failure and the entire wing section was still intact after the dust settled. The spar was slightly bent on this occaision, but no more than 5mm from the impact. The Y lead has been removed in version 2 and she if flying magnificently :)
WELL, took it down to Yallingup today, stock out of the box, used delivered wing spar, used 2200 3S battery, but only glided on the slope no prop, FANTASTIC, moderate winds, WOW, had a big bunch of people watching it soar around, GET ONE, fantastic!
