Maybe the only use for this windsock is to look from where the wind is coming. The sock itself is useless as it always stands like its windy. Its the wrong material for a well working windsock!!!
But its a nice gadget for the flying field to show the other pilots who has the biggest balls outthere *-)

I have used one of these for over six months at our club field and it needs to weather a bit so it folds down

You'll need to make a bigger one to indicate windspeed, this one is simply to small. I Use a fibreglass pole (spare for tent) to stick it in the ground, the bending of the fibreglass indicates the windspeed :-)

the windsock itself is good quality, i would just like it a bit larger. but the rod is cheep steel. i had to replace it with aluminium just after 3week because it started to rust in every place. i also inserted a 8cm wide hoop from .2mm aluminium sheet on the first bit of the hose so it doesnt hang flat down. it also catches the wind better this way. so with some little modifications its very useful!

From the sizes above, this is not a huge, heavy product. Why does HK add the oversize box for this item? It's an additional 79g penalty and adds a lot of shipping to this item!

It has a metal ring which must be boxed or it will bend in transit.

I use this in my back yard, the kids love it, birds love it....That is all it can be used for. It sucks as a windsock. The picture you see is prety much how it looks with or with out the wind, it does not bend for the most part so there is no way to tell the light wind. Botmow line, good for kids sucks for planes. Good Christmas ornament as the tree toper. Two thubs down on this one. Probably worst product of 2009 IMHO.

I agree with you. This "ripstop nylon" is way too stiff to bee used for a windsock this size. It can show the wind direction over ~2-4m/s, but no way to estimate windspeed without a wind meter.

The photo was taken on an angle and adjusted afterwards in photoshop. If you scrunch the fabric a few times after you open the packet or let the windsock sit for a day or two it will loosen up and be more flexible. The fabric is also meant to indicate lighter winds than a full size windsock because you're flying model planes.

a good makeshift pole for this wind sock is to get a fishing pole and run fishing line throught the holes then get a decent sized stick and sharpen one end and tape the fishing pole to the none sharpe side then just hammer the tree in to the ground and done!

One word 'Cool' - Ordering 4. Only realy need two though. Your Primary and Seconary. Might Light one or two up with some LED Strips and/or Lumifly Glow Wire for night flight fun. That would look great.

It is a hollow alloy pole which is 6cm longer than the diameter. To mount it you can use a nail or skewer on a post/tree/rooftop.

I got one and it works great. Only problem I have is even though a pole goes all the way up the hollow tube, the wind sometimes blows the whole windsock off the pole. How do other people keep the windsock tube from blowing off the pole?
