That's why I'm working on a DIY project over at RCModelReviews that will use the open telemetry capabilities of the FrSky RC system to deliver the GPS data to the antenna-controller.

The way I figure it -- with FPV, if you're out of RC range then video will not be much use to you so having the data fed back via the RC system rather than the video link makes far more sense.

The project is pretty low cost too.  The controller board will have about $40 worth of parts and drive regular RC servos.  The hi-gain antenna (5.8GHz) will be a simple build for anyone who knows what a hacksaw, a drill and a screwdriver look like.

900MHz is no good - it's illegal

1.2GHz is no good - it's illegal and you'll get second-harmonic issues (1.2GHz x 2 = 2.4GHz) with your RC gear.

2.4GHz is no good, it'll swamp (desensitize) your RC receiver

5.8GHz is an ISM band that you can use in Australia -- so that's what you'd be advised to use.

I'm reviewing some 200mW 5.8GHz video gear next week.

900- Who cares, I don't.
unless I get busted
1.2- Good point. Never knew the 'second-harmonic issues' thing.
2.4- Everyone knows that.
5.8- Cool. How may mW is legal?
I'm- I look forward to that - and your directional antenna kit.

Isn't 5.8Ghz a problem with distance?
200mW at 5.8Ghz sounds like 300mtrs at best.

I'm getting really pee'd off with these forums.  They keep throwing me back to the main HK login page if the login-session on the shop-site has expired, even though the login session in the forums hasn't.

I did just finish writing a detailed explanation of how much range the 5.8GHz system should have and all the factors affecting this but after losing it for the above reason, I really can't be bothered retyping it.

This idiot behavour of the forums has only just started happening today.  What's changed?

Agreed Bruce, same thing happened to me today, twice, once replying to you and once posting some idiototic cr/\p in 'Off Topic'
So something has indeed changed. I say there should be a 'Keep me Logged in for Today' option. It now seems to be logging me off after only about 5 minutes.

I've had it happen a few times (lost a post) in the past too, but that's because I spent 10 minutes writing a detailed reply that I thought was really COOL and lost the lot because I had been had logged out or something 'while I wasn't looking' or something else went wrong when I went to sent/post/save/submit, like my junk computer locking up - Windows ya know.
Or I've done a REALLY dumb thing like bump 'Clear Form' instead of 'Post Reply' or I've had the sudden urge to go fly a Heli around the shed to chase the cat out and didn't get back to post until 20 minutes later.

So what I do now (for all forums - even my own) if I'm going to write a two page essay is to copy/paste the original text

I'm replying to into a .txt file, for reference, then write my two pages of most likely rubbish, save that, then copy/paste it back to the forum - Then nuke 'em from space - it's only way to be sure - Ripley would agree, damned Aliens.

So now that I've spent 5 minutes typing this rot up, I think you should redo your POST offline then submit it again - PLEASE, as you always (well 99% mostly) have something interesting to say that we can all learn a great deal from.

I have text file called HK-Drafts.txt that Notepad++ reports as 2125 lines long and now this is going to be part of it.

Now that all that exciting stuff has been said, what's the 'basic' range of a 200mW 5.8GHz set up using just a simple omni whip antenna.
Jason's 300 metres is enough for me if system is dirt cheap, but can be ugraded to get say 1000 metres - I think I better shut up now!

-B.

I'll rewrite it and post it to the FPV section of my forums where I know it's not going to vanish because a session has timed out Angry

Your session must have ended.
